Remote Ready Biology Learning Activities has 50 remote-ready activities, which work for either your classroom or remote teaching.
We have added a brief section on cell differentiation to help students understand that the cell cycle and mitosis are not the only processes needed to make a human body. In addition, we have changed the symbols for the alleles of the genes on the model chromosomes to avoid confusion between lower case and capital letters (e.g., s and S). If you have already made model chromosomes and do not want to change the symbols, we provide the older version of the Student Handout for your convenience.

It makes me think that I have lived before, the deju vu isn't long enough to really reconize anything, just a knowing gut feeling that I have been in a place before when I walk in. Or that I have heard or seen things that feel very familiar.
It doesn't happen as it did years ago, I believe as the brain ages so do feelings of deju vu. Now days I have feelings of major things happening but get the people mixed up as to who it will happen to, but know that things are going to happen to a person and it will be tragic..
I am a believer that I have lived and died before and will again. When my life is as close to perfect as it can get then I will never come back as me or self, my bio will change. Deju vu to me is flashes of old memories in my old brain when I lived other lives. I am I think in my last life. I also believe in dimensions, when death comes we go to a new dimension. I have the instinctive feeling that new lives come from the dimensions. Babies I believe can sometimes be put with the wrong parents, or were we? To be reincarnated into a being that will always have strikes against them has to be a type of Hell you are meant to endure for that life . Deju vu gives me hope that a new and better life is ahead.

I've never understood what drives people to dance.
have never though about how disable people are looked at sexually. After reading this article it put the subject matter in a different light.
thank you

We have revised the Student Handout to improve clarity and the logical progression of student understanding. We have introduced the use of Jamboard for students to construct the Yellowstone foodweb if you are teaching online. We have also fixed some problems with the food web cards.

I’m 14 and I’ve been taking Prozac 40mg for about 4 months and I’m writing this after my third relatively severe tic attack after going on prozac. I’ve never had tics before but I’m experiencing tics in my neck (tilting moving my head around), shoulders and arms (mainly my right arm, clenching and unclenching of hand). I had literally no side effects going on to Prozac so I didn’t not connect the tics to Prozac for a while.
I was hit by a car a little over forty years ago at the age of 15 and suffered from a TBI that almost killed me. I was unconscious for a day, and when I awoke I had no feelings of awareness from before. My sense of "I" stems only from that day. I have most of the memories from the time before the accident, but "me", my sense of awareness of me as I am today was born on that day over forty years ago. I have no emotional connection to the memories from the time before the accident. They aren't mine. When my family came to visit me in the hospital, I knew who they were, but they held no attachment for me. Many weeks later when I was well enough to be released, I went home to a family of strangers. I never said anything to anyone about this for years, because I didn't want to be locked up as crazy. Everyone said that I was different, but ascribed it to the accident. I felt like I was living a life that wasn't mine, that belonged to someone else. I also had trouble controlling my temper, and I was angry that I had to pretend to be this person that I was supposed to be. I couldn't tell anyone that he was dead, that I was living here now, going through the motions of his life. My rages led me to fighting, drug and alcohol abuse, dropping out of school, bad relationships, and eventually prison (I did time for armed bank robbery). I have been out of prison for over 20 years now, and I have managed to come to terms with my past and the accident. I got my BA and taught theatre for many years. I eventually came to care for the strangers who were my family, and accepted and took control of this life and made it mine. My anger is gone, and I am now an active and respected member of the community, and a father with an amazing and happy daughter who is doing very well in college. This life is mine now, although it took me a long time to accept and claim it. I have lived for over forty years in this body, and I have enough life experience now that the early years are now only a small portion. This is in contrast to when I first woke up from the accident feeling frightened, alone, and isolated in a life with which I had no emotional connection, surrounded by people I didn't really know or care about, with no memories of my own. I don't know if this will help anyone, but I thought that I would post it anyway just to let people know that given time to adjust, life after TBI and personality change can be wonderful and fulfilling. Please feel free to comment.
MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO EVERYONE ON THIS FORUM SUFFERING FROM THIS HORRIBLE DEMONIC DISEASE, IT IS TRULY FROM THE PIT OF HELL.
I HAVE SUFFERED WITH THIS DISEASE FOR CLOSE TO A YEAR NOW AND MY SYMPTOMS BEGAN JUST LIKE MANY OTHERS: IT BEGAN WITH A BURNING STABBING SENSATION IN MY HEAD AND ALL OVER MY BODY.
EXTREME INSOMNIA -- NO SLEEP AT ALL FOR DAYS SOMETIMES WEEKS ON END, IF I DO DOSE OFF IT WOULD BE FOR ONLY 10 TO 15 MINUTES THEN I AM JERKED BACK AWAKE BY A BURNING SENSATION ALL OVER MY BODY FOLLOWED BY A MIX OF EXTREME ANXIETY , DEPRESSION , CONFUSION AND HALLUCINATIONS.
LOSS OF SENSATION AND EXTREME TEMPERATURE SENSITIVITY. ALWAYS FREEZING COLD . BURNING SENSATION ALL OVER MY BODY LIKE A CHEMICAL BURN.
LOSS OF ALL EMOTION EXCEPT FEAR SADNESS AND DOOM.
DOUBLE VISION, DRY EYES AND NO TEARS WHEN I CRY.
SLOWLY LOSING MY ABILITY TO WALK AND KEEP BALANCE
BLOOD PRESSURE AND HEART RATE SPIKES
INABILITY TO SPEAK AT TIMES AND TROUBLE READING AND WRITING
PERHAPS THE MOST BIZARRE ASPECT WOULD BE THE DECLINE INTO MANIC PSYCHOSIS, AFTER MANY DAYS OF SLEEP DEPRIVATION I BEGIN TO WALK AROUND THE HOUSE AIMLESSLY MUMBLING , HALLUCINATING IN A MANIC DREAM LIKE STATE HAVING EPISODES OF PARANOID DILUSIONS AND WIMPERING AND CRYING.
EXTREME APETTITE DISTURBANCES -- I AM EITHER CONSTANTLY HUNGRY WITH NO SENSATION OF FULLNESS AFTER I EAT OR I WILL GO DAYS ON END WITH NO APPETITE AT ALL.
NAUSEA , DRY HEAVES AND CONSTIPATION
ALL OF THESE OCCUR ON A DAILY BASIS.
I SYMPATHIZE WITH EVERYONE WHEN THEY TELL YOU THAT NO-ONE BELIEVES YOU. THE HOSPITAL ER DEPT. WILL ONLY TREAT THE SYMPTOMS , LOAD YOU UP ON MEDS AND SEND YOU ON YOUR WAY. SPECIALISTS LIKE NEUROLOGISTS, PSYCHIATRISTS ETC.. TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE ANXIETY, DEPRESSION BI-POLAR AND GIVE YOU USELESS ANTI-PSYCOTIC MEDS , BENZOS WHATEVER THEY CAN PRESCRIBE.
YOUR ONLY HOPE FOR HEALING AND COMPLETE RESTORATION IS IN JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD AND SAVIOR , I PRAY EVERYDAY TO BE HEALED AND I AM STILL CLINGING TO THE HEM OF HIS GARMENT AWAITING THAT DAY , BECAUSE BELIEVE ME MODERN MEDICINE HAS NO CURE, NO TREATMENT, OR NO MANAGEMENT FOR THIS DISEASE!!!! EVERY AVENUE IS A DEAD END AND YOU END UP GOING THRU MONTHS OF ENDLESS TORTURE HOPING FOR SOME RELIEF THAT NEVER COMES.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PUT YOUR TRUST IN JESUS.
I experienced this for first time a couple days ago. I know I was awake, but had just woken. The unknown symbols were quickly changing like flashing code. It appeared on the right side of a wall at the foot of my bed. It stopped and then started again twice. It was vivid, not bright or dim, in clear focus, each symbol separate but rapidly changing to a new symbol. All symbols were the same height vertically, and horizontally in rows about 2 f x 3 ft area, and about 5 or 6 lines of symbols were in the area. They were light green, and the light was not obtrusive but rather clear and defined. My room was dark, but a little bit of light was coming in behind my white solid wood horizontal blinds. This is the one and only time I have seen anything like this. I didn't feel a strong fear or a presence, but rather a strange curiosity. I could make out all the other objects and walls in my room. There didn't seem to be any noise accompanying this event/vision. Just plain weird unexpected, unprecedented, and unknown.
I am able to open the PowerPoint from the link provided. Your problem may be a temporary issue with your network. If you try again and still are unable to open the ppt using the link, are you able to right-click the link and save the ppt file to your computer? And then open the ppt file from there?
I hope that will solve your problem,
Ingrid
For some reason I have not been able to open the ppt slide show for Levels of Biology. It appears to be loading for long periods of time without loading.
Thank you for your message. Please see the Teacher Notes for information about how to obtain the key, as well as background biology and instructional suggestions.

The activity on the origin of the coronavirus that is causing the current pandemic has been revised and expanded to include more emphasis on the process of natural selection and to introduce the evolution of the new variants of the coronavirus. Recent research evidence (up through March 6, 2021) has been incorporated in the Teacher Notes and Student Handout.

Hi, I am using this for my students. Could you send me an answer key?
I am grateful to Ann Dixon, the wonderful webmaster of Serendip, who located the new URL for this activity. I have updated the resources document and include a new description here.
The Winners and Losers of Climate Change
Lesson: homework + ~35 minutes of class time; for high school. Students are assigned two articles to read and then answer questions about these articles. In the first article, students learn how climate change produces not only hotter temperatures, but also extreme weather events. In the second article students learn about phenotypic plasticity and look at several examples of genetic changes that have already occurred in species due to climate change. In class, students predict the vulnerability to climate change for eight species, based on information in a set of species cards.

Thanks for alerting us to this problem,

Thank you for your kind words of appreciation.
For the population blank, the correct answer is the population of frogs. For the ecosystem and community levels and for the organism and smaller levels, students should provide appropriate answers. I hope that clarifies the intention of the question sufficiently, but if not, please email me at iwaldron@upenn.edu.

Has anyone had a flare up due to getting the covid vaccine? Vaccines always cause false ups for me
First, let me thank you for organization such a wide variety of activities!! I always like checking in with your site at the beginning of each school year to see what I want to rotate in or out. This is most definitely an invaluable resource!!
Second, I'd like to apologize for bugging you. I need a little bit of guidance on what answer you're looking for to the below problem.
"Fill in the blanks on the right to give examples for a population of frogs living in a pond."
The way I'm reading, is that you want students to give examples of OTHER populations found within the frog's community. But when reading it "give examples for a population of frogs"... what else is in a population other than the frog species?
Thank you for your assistance in this matter and have a wonderful day!
Sincerely,
Amy
Hello;
Your description is very similar to my own. I developed vision loss in my right dominant eye. Retina specialist misdiagnosed it as CSR and was told to return in 2 months. By that time my vision was very bad in the affected eye. I consulted with another opto and was told that he suspected CNV because it was bleeding slightly on fundus exam. Further testing revealed CNV under the center of macula(subfoveal). My vision was 20/200+ and after avastin injections for four months, it improved to 20/80. The vision is distorted blurry and there is major glare like I saw a camera flash(the afterimage of a camera flash) It is absolutely maddening, it has caused me to feel suicidal, severe anxiety, and major depression. I am now treating also with a psychiatrist and therapist. I am a very visual person and it feels that so much has been taken away. I also just recently had PDT(a week ago) and there is even more blurriness and glare though my opto states that this will resolve to baseline or possibly even better after several weeks. I wish all the best for you. Remember, there are new treatments coming around the corner for CNV and perhaps in a few years a cure will be there.
Hi,
Thank you for all of these resources!
I'm trying to access "The Winners and Losers of Climate Change," available from your Climate Change Resources attachment. The link that's attached to it is not working:
https://www.cpet.ufl.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Chpt1_Drosophila2017.pdf
I'm wondering if there might be another working link available for this activity?
Thank you,
Kathy Keogh
Excellent article, as a Muslim, I testify to the benefits of fasting, it is the tradition of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم to fast at least 3 days of each month, which I have been practicing for a number of years, there’s nothing like fasting.
The Student Handout has been reorganized and revised to focus on the anchoring phenomenon of similarities and differences in the characteristics of family members and the driving question of how genes contribute to these similarities and differences. Questions, figures, and explanations guide students to an increasingly sophisticated understanding of the answers to the driving question.

The longer version of the Student Handout has been expanded to provide a more complete explanation of how the immune system fights a coronavirus infection and how the infection and immune system response can result in illness and even death. The shorter version of the Student Handout provides a concise prerequisite for COVID-19 Vaccines – How do they work? The Student Handouts and Teacher Notes incorporate recent research findings (as of mid-January 2021) concerning the rapidly evolving understanding of coronavirus infection.
Just a data point: I don't recall every being mocked for dancing because I don't dance, never have, never enjoyed it. High school classmates (and PE teachers) never understood that. Dance is always forced, awkward, and uncomfortable for me. I'm not convinced there is language to dance. If there is, and there might be, I'm deaf.
I suspect we are missing a quite important piece in this discussion of the humanities and natural sciences. That is the role the social sciences play in helping us understand the accumulation of knowledge as a group activity. I am thinking of Bruno Latour and his work in sociology of science...
Science does not enter a chaotic society to put order into it anymore, to simplify its composition, and to put an end to controversies. It does enter it, but to add new uncertain ingredients... to all the other ingredients that make up the collective experiments. When scientists add their findings to the mix, they do not put an end to politics; they add new ingredients to the collective process. http://www.ub.edu/prometheus21/articulos/obsprometheus/Latour208.pdf
The author profoundly misunderstands the philosophy of science. Science not criticised? There are caveats to every experiment and every model. (Research assistant class 101)
The validity of experimental data to change a model of a natural phenomenon is scrutinized by peer review (often peers who are competing), and potentially any person that will ever live in perpetuity. Science is the never-ending criticism of models of the natural world. And frankly, that's why many scientists love what they do; there is always augmentation and change on the horizon. It's important to note, though, that science is powerful and many models are reliable precisely because of their intense scrutiny and accountability to the entire world forever.
Science and Humanities are different ways of "knowing" our world. Their overlap is in different ways of getting closer to a kind of truth. As Sir Polkinghorn proposed - bringing them together gives us "binocular" vision of our world - a richer view with more depth and understanding than either alone. Imagine, if people knew a good amount of science, humanities, and the arts, then we'd all see through those binoculars.
The revised version has been posted.
