encountering moon cake

ally's picture

Today is the mid-autumn festival, a Chinese traditional festival. On this day, families reunion and enjoy the full moon at night and there’s something that can never be left out – moon cake. Moon cake, a kind of dessert with flaky pastry holding a variety of fillings which shapes like a full moon is kind of sweet and cloying. There’re always tons of moon cakes piled up at home when it’s approaching mid-autumn festival, all kinds of flavors, and many are even made of ice-cream. Moon cake is a stuff that I have to meet every day, almost from the beginning to the end of September. Since there’s lots of sugar in it, it’s sweet and cloying, so I have never liked it. It always seems to be a disaster to see it.

Host Sister

My story supports relates to R_Massey's. Sometimes, it is difficult to completely know someone. I thought I knew a person before meeting her, but all my thoughts about her after our first few awkward interactions had disappeared. In eleventh grade, my school had a language immersion program where I got to live with a host family in Spain for ten days. I had emailed my "host sister" a few times before we met and she seemed to like the same things as me. But when I got to Spain, it turned out that she and I had nothing in common.

we share a way of communication

The arguments that The Unknown made make sense when the pre-condition is "humans are more advanced". However, this pre-condition does not have anything to do with the communication between animals, which include humans. Look at the nature, the creatures in the world have formed a biological food chain. When creatures are hungry, they come out and hunt. The weaker ones, on the other hand, will got killed and eaten. Humans are not designed strong physically, but intellegently advanced. We hunt just like the other animals, the only difference is that they use their bodies, we use tools.

Unlikely Connection

Simiar to the last post, I've also had an unlikely encounter with a famous perosn. While visiting New York City, my friends and I all went to see Newsies on Broadway. During intermission we all went into the lobby to buy refreshments and shirts with the Newsies logo on it. After spending a fortune on useless souvenirs, we began to ascend the staircase back to our seats. As I began walking, I saw this mysterious, red haired man looking right at me. He looked extremely farmilar, but I couldn't remember how I knew him. Then as our eyes were locked, I remembered that he was on one of my favorite television shows. I could tell by the look in his eyes that he knew that I figured out who he was. He looked terrified that I would somehow make a scene.

Airport

Every time I go to the airport, especially the one in my hometown, I keep my eyes open for anyone I might know, always eager to randomly bump into someone I know and make that thrilling unplanned connection. Once, in the chicago airport, I saw someone I knew, although they didn't know me. I saw them hurry off their flight and walk briskly down the airport hallway. It took me a second to recall where I recognized their face from, but then it dawned on me that this was Hank Green. He's the brother of the author John Green, they both make videos on youtube, which is why I recognized him.

Strangers All the Same

R_Massey's picture

Unlike jccohen's story, mine is not of an interaction with someone I never met and thought I knew but someone I had truley known and became estranged. For a time, I didn't think I could know anyone better. There was not a moment that I thought differetly or questioned how I felt. I thought it was a two way street with cars going both directions. We were perfectly fine and happy. Then there was a short period where we were apart. Hours became days and days became weeks. We were apart, but I still thought together in a different way.

A Silent Conversation With Strangers

Different from Green’s and Leigh’s with animals, my non-verbal communication is actually with a human. A baby! Quite often I encounter babies in their mommy’s chest or in a stroller when in the elevator or waiting in line. They are the cutest thing in the world! Instantaneously and spontaneously, my maternal love arises. I can not control myself not to tickle them: pop my eyes as horrifying as possible, or make funny facial expression, or just simply smile at them. And those cuties stare at me curiously with their lively black eyes and smile back at me.
