Science and a Sense of Place

Watershed Education

I do spend some time teaching the watershed. I now have some idea how I can add some spark to this unit.

Similarity through time

Mary Ellen - ...an atmosphere in which we could use our own background knowledge base, bounce ideas off each other, and have the time to process what we were experiencing through trial and error.

Anne - ...don't miss all the great images of us looking for homologies

Diane - I think I would introduce one tree at a time and discussed why the right answer made more sense than the other 2 choices.

Putting it together

I often kid that I am turning into my students. I know that I have learned many things this week but I'm afraid that I will forget them. I plan to use my blog to help me find my way back to Bryn Mawr when September comes.

Projects for the Environmental Club

My environmental club has a place in history. For the last twelve years our school community has helped me raise the funds to take my students to Canada. For years my students have been assisting teachers and staff at lunch and after school. This year  I wanted the students to be involved in service learning . Although I started this on a small scale last  year this year I want it to encompass more areas. Some new or improved activities will be:

1.My club will be assisting our life skills class in collecting recycled papers throughout the building.

Reflections

Sense of Place 7/23/07

I wasn't sure what to expect when I signed up for this two-week session, but I think it's going to provide a lot of "food for thought" as our group interacts, discusses, and shares experiences. I expected to feel tired at the end of the day, but I left class invigorated and looking forward to Tuesday.

Same Place - Different Time

Yesterday I had to spend most of my day at my school building. It is located in The Kirkbride Center, which is the focus of my presentation on Friday. This building complex was once The Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane! As I sat on one of the classrooms, I looked at the high ceilings, the wide open hallways and wide floor spaces. During lunch I spoke with a 76 year old resident of West Philadelphia who recalled the Mill Creek sewer which I included in my presentation.

I am fascinated when I speak with citizens over 70 who recall different times and different environments as compared to the same locations before severe changes to the landscapes due to progress and related effects.
