Sleep Paralysis: Awake But Still Asleep

Hiro Takahashi

A person may wake up and find himself unable to move or speak as if he is frozen. He also may hear footsteps, see a ghost-like creature, or feel someone sitting on his chest. Throughout the history, people considered this phenomenon as work done by evil spirits. However, the modern science can explain the terrifying event as a Sleep Paralysis.

A Sleep Paralysis is possibly a hereditary disorder in which one experiences very frightening seconds or minutes of total body paralysis with little respiration and eye movements (1). A victim in this state feels awake, but he cannot move or speak (2). In addition to the immobility, the common symptoms include feeling choked or suffocated, hearing strange noises like footsteps and voices, seeing beings or dark shadows, and feeling an existance of someone in the room (1). Although these symptoms often direct the victims to believe in ghosts, mistransmission of neural signals in the brain causes Sleep Paralysis. When a person sleeps, his brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contraction (3). If he comes into consciousness before the brain sends signals to activate muscle contraction, he cannot move his body, and consequently, become "paralyzed"(2).

In order to understand how a body becomes paralyzed while the person is awake, it is necessary to understand sleep cycles. In a mammalian sleep, the brain activity undergoes two different states called non-REM (NREM) sleep and REM sleep, which differ very much from wakefulness (3). NREM and REM sleep alternate cyclically through the night; in human, about 80 minutes of NREM sleep starts a night of sleep, about 10 minutes of REM sleep follows, and this 90 minute cycle is repeated about 3 to 6 times during the night (3). During NREM sleep, a body produces few movement, but the body has capability of tossing about in bed and producing some other motor events, such as sleepwalking and sleeptalking (3). The cardiac-muscle contraction and breathing occur at a uniform rate, and the eyes move slowly (2). During REM sleep, on the other hand, heart rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure vary (3). The eyes move rapidly because most dreaming takes place in this period, and the sleeper probably "look" at the moving objects in a dream (2).

The brain's control over muscles during REM sleep points out that in this period, a body is normally in the state of total paralysis, called a "nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis" (3). Probably to prevent a person from "acting out" a dream, the brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contractions (2). Although some peripheral muscles, such as the muscles of the fingers and face, still twitch, the large skeletal muscles become relaxed, or "paralyzed" as a result (3). Some evidence supports that the motor paralysis of REM sleep protect against the acting out of one's dreams. A patient who suffers from rare syndrome called REM Sleep Behavior Disorder lacks the normal nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis, and he acts out violent dreams during REM sleep, often with injurious consequences (4). For example, a 60-year-old surgeon dreamt that he was attacked "by criminals, terrorists, and monsters who always tried to kill [him]" and fighting against them in the nightmare, he was actually punching and kicking his wife who slept in the same bed (4).

A nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis during REM sleep is accomplished actively by postsynaptic inhibition of motorneurons (3). Although the exact process of motor inhibition is not clear, some neurotransmitters and hormones are known to generate the many components of REM sleep. Aministering physostigmine, an inhibitor of the catabolic enzyme, increases the concentration of acetylcholine within the neurons in the pons, making it possible to artificially generate and start REM sleep in the middle of NREM sleep (3). Carbachol, the cholinergic agonist, produces a period of REM sleep in cat when directly injected into the pontine tegmentum (3). The hormone melatonin, a "master hormone" (5) that mainly controls circadian rhythms, also seems to play an important role in enhancing the REM state; the level of melatonin secretion by the pineal gland reaches its lowest during REM sleep (5). Such neurotransmitters and hormones probably activate or inhibit the activity of second messengers, which then activate or inhibit the third messengers, and so on till the last messenger inhibit the synaptic transmission or cause hyperpolarization of the motorneurons. And if, for some reason, the nervous or endocrine system continues to release the neural inhibitors, a person may experience Sleep Paralysis as he enters awakefully into or awakens directly from REM period (2).

While the modern neuroscience can describe the state of Sleep Paralysis as some errors of the neural transmission in the brain during REM sleep, a person who has seen or heard ghost-like figures/voices may easily believe that eveil spirits fully controlled his entire body. However, the images or noises, which the victim believes that he has seen or heard, are most likely hallucinations; and hallucinations, too, can result from the brain activity. In the 1960's, the Canadian neurologist W. Penfield introduced that electrical stimulation of the temporal lobe can cause the auditory hallucinations in the wake state (5). The buzzing or ringing sounds in the ears and other auditory hallucinations are closely associated with the activity of the auditory cortex and involves the temporal lobe (5). During the early period of sleep paralysis, the activity of the temporal lobe increases significantly, sometimes inducing hallucinatory sense (5). Similarly, the visual cortex generates internal visual stimuli, causing the victim to "see" terrifying figures during the paralysis (5).

How an episode of Sleep Paralysis induces visual or auditory hallucinations is still not clear, but it seems to have a significant relationship with anxiety (5). For anxiety is a neurocognitive event closely related to both psychological and physical processes, the extreme anxiety or panic may cause the release of several different signal molecules that trigger all kinds of physical events (5). A person experiencing Sleep Paralysis feels mortal fear or extreme panic, and hence, the brain generates and releases internal visual or auditory stimuli, producing hallucinations.

Also, hallucinations during Sleep Paralysis may happen, for one keeps dreaming even after some parts of his brain wakes up directly from REM sleep. Since the nervous and endocrine systems continue to release the neural inhibitors which sustain the paralysis, it may be possible that those systems keep releasing the neural activators that stimulate dreaming. Thus, a person continues to "see" the images and "hear" the noises produced in the dream that he has just had in REM sleep from which he has awaken.

Understanding more neural concepts of Sleep Paralysis, some researchers now hypothesize that a very rare condition called Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome (SUNDS) may closely relate to Sleep Paralysis (1). Upon the death, a SUNDS victim produces no body movement even though he experiences a myocardial infarction and strong breathing difficulties and should straggle in agony (5). The death may be caused by the extreme muscle atonia during Sleep Paralysis, which is so severe that even the cardiac muscles and the diaghragm paralyze (5).

Until I started researching on this subject, I have believed that the total paralysis of a body is due to an evil taking absolute control over the body. However, the interactions between neurons in the brain can explain this seemingly mysterious phenomenon in a scientific way. Although the explanation is not complete yet, for there are many unclear processes about Sleep Paralysis, the current hypothesis appears to reject the possibility of ghosts on this matter. Of course, it is impossible to completely disprove the existence of "spirits", "minds", or "God" affecting one's behavior. Nevertheless, like Sleep Paralysis and SUNDS, many or the mysterious conditions and behaviors which are only explained in supernatural terms probably result from brain.

I have been trying to figure out what was going on in my sleep untill i read this. Now i am happy to know what my body was expeiencing. It's quite scary your first couple experiences of sleep paralysis but now i'm gonna stay calm when it is happening to me and try to get my own understanding of the experience ... I have had sleep paralyisis at least once per month for the last 8 years. I am 29 as of this writing. I just had the experience about 1 hour ago and thus has caused me to do reasearch about it on the net. I noticed that many Dr.'s contribute this to anxiety, stress and other factors. My question is ... why is there always an evil presence in that concious yet body is still asleep phase? Today I heard a loud static sound, and opened my eyes to a spider crawling all over my arm. When I prayed to God, or said His name (Jehovah) the spider would start to disappear. I finally went thru my mental prayer when I awoke. This leads me to believe that it is more of a spiritual occurence, because I never have positive images while in this paralized state. I know there are many things in which our ancestors thought it was demonic rather than scientific, only to find there was a scientific explanation. However, I think this is different and cannot be simply written off as "scientific". There is not enough proof to show that it is scientific.

About a month ago I had another episode of sleep paralysis and I saw a small presence in the room with me. It was dark, and I could not see it's face (I am getting chills typing about it right now). My question is, why is there always an evil presence not only associated with my episodes, but so many others I have read about? ... Abel, 24 August 2006

i was thinking it is evil who do that during night but now i find out why. I am suffering from sleep paralyze possibly every nigh spicily when i have dinar ... Salah Nasser, 28 January 2007

I used to have this sleeping disorder when I was a child.  It has come back once or twice with adulthood, but otherwise, it is in the past.  I used to, with great effort, move my hand to my face and pull an eye open, which would wake me up, but sometimes the struggle was too much and I would go on into a deeper sleep.

Since the brain can do this to me, can it also cause me to get migraines just as I am about to wake up?

It seems, as I have discovered, if I get less than 4 hours sleep a night, I do not get migraines.  If I get 6 hours or more, it's about a 90% chance I will wake with a migraine.  Later in the day, I get an hour or two nap and that is the routine as it works.  Doctors just sort of treat the migraine and don't get into the sleep thing I have.  I take MaxAult for the migraines when they do get me.

I woke one time, and just as I woke, I felt this white-hot needle going into my head... bingo.  A migraine in 5 seconds.  That is how they can occur.  I wake with them otherwise.  I figure it my brain doing things it shouldn't.  I have a clean bill of health otherwise.

Thanks for your time.  Have a good day ... Jay, 11 February 2007

I have a question, and hope someone out there has an answer, it has been months and I have thus far failed to find one.  Has there ever been a record of anyone receiving the effects of sleep paralysis without having been asleep?  The reason I ask this, is a while ago, having not slept in a few hours, I was sitting at my computer, and it seemed to have happened to me. Within seconds I was too tired to hold up my own head, and my breathing got very difficult. Then I began to feel a sort of dizziness as my limbs lost feeling, and dropped to my side. after this, the dizziness turned to near blindness. I could see, but nothing would focus, and everything I tried to look at seemed to dart around like a mosquito. By this time I had no feeling in my entire body, could move nothing without quite a bit of concentration, and I could barely breath.  My mother heard me try and make out some kind of cry for help, and found me there spilled into my computer chair. She rolled me to my bed, and poured me into it. Within about 10-15 minutes I had regained everything I once had, but my sea legs did not ware off for another ten or so minutes.  I went to the emergency soon after. I had an E.K.G. and a C.A.T. scan, with no results, and I piss less in a week then the amount of blood they took that night. After basically telling me I was lying, the doctor told me that my symptoms did not fit anything at all.  What I do know, is I have been researching the issue ever since, and can only base my problem on Sleep Paralysis. All the symptoms match. And again, my question....Has there ever been a record of someone under the effects of sleep paralysis without ever having gone to sleep?  I hope you can shed some sort of light on this subject, as it,...well, it freaked me the hell out, and no one has been able to answer me!  Thank you for your time ... I used get this "evil paralysed me" feeling when i was paralysed and usually saw a ghost. i tried to shout or move but no sound escaped my mouth and couldn't move at all. it happened again yesterday and was almost convinced that ghosts/evil spirits were getting the better of me. But, me being a practical and logical guy, erjected this theory and started researching on this phenomenon. I came across this research paper on Sleep Paralysis. This greatly helped me in alleviating my fears. And next time i "see" a ghost during sleep paralyses, ill just laugh at it ;-)  Thanks for the research ... Siddarth, 10 December 2007

Been happening more

I first got sleep paralysis (well im saying its that but not 100% sure) a few years ago. It only happened once and even though i was really scared, i let it go by thinking I had just sat on a nerve or something silly like that. But then it happened again and then again and again. And in the last year its happened alot more. To the point where it will happen every few weeks or even twice in the same week. I don't have a dream before hand, I just wake up feeling paralyzed. I fight with all the stregth that i have but just cant move. I start to panic thinking will i ever be able to move. Its like My head is being pushed on my pillow and i cant lift it. (i dont think this is demons or anything silly like that) The more its happened the more I've thought about it and try to do different things to see if i can... for example moving my toes and fingers. sometimes i can. sometimes i cant. I've tried talking when it happens but i cant. It normal lasts for about 15-20 seconds then i can move again. However because im extremly sleepy, when i am able to move.. i just turn over and it happens again to the point where i think im going to have to get out of bed for it to stop. Which is annoying. It always happens in the mornings and has only ever happened once when i was going to sleep. I hate it because it makes me feel weak and scared for the rest of the day and when it comes to evening it makes me scared to sleep and because of the stress it will proberly then happen again. I suffer from anxiety, panic attack and stress so i've put it down to that. But i guess il never actually know why it happens. I tell myself to not be stressed so that it doesnt happen so oftern, but how can i not be stressed when it is happening? theres no getting out of it :/ Last time i went to my GP i mentioned it to see if it was 'normal' and he didnt have a clue what i was talking about, which made me feel alot worse about it. I just hope its not link to coot death.

it pinned me down.'s picture

it pinned me down.

it held my hands down and my face turnt my head covered my mouth soo i couldnt scream i tryed to move then all of a sudeen it left me and i still felt its presence in the room but it was gone i jumped up and sat there in my bed i wouldnt move till it was gone. im now feeling better with this advice about god...

Just looking..

For a while now I've experienced what i know to be anxiety. I had always been confused about the matter, as I always kept it to myself so I could figure it out spiritually and mentally. I've come a long way. Today I was frustrated though, I typed "Still feels like the only one to see what I see" into google and this was the first page I found. I've experienced alot of what other people on this page have experienced, only the closest I've come to being paralyzed is when i feel like i'm about to fall, I hold my breath, my senses highten, but my eyesight begins to fail. This only last for 10-15 seconds. Now if this has anything to do with my anxiety, I've judged my knowledge on my own anxiety as conclusive, this is why..

"My anxiety use to stop me in my tracks, leave me speechless cause me to "black out", however it is not in my nature to be violent, so one night I "listened" to my anxiety, it told me to walk. I walked for 40kms, I still 'see' it to be one of the best things I've done. In an 'imaginary' sense (that seems real to me) I vividly remember grabbing my anxiety in my dream and putting him into my necklace, now as my conclusion he is my 'gift', every time my imaginative thoughts talk to my necklace, he becomes the thought that talks back. I now 'choose' when to feel anxiety. It lead me to write "I see you watching over me, and it makes me scared, why should I listen to you, your in my head, your the only one there" My anxiety wrote back, "My friend I'm watching over you, even whilst your asleep, Its not light that tells me I exist, It's your heart beating"."

I've posted this for a purpose, not an answer. Every time i look to my left, in the blind to my right i some how see a figure known to me as my anxiety. Everytime I look to my right, in the blind to my left I some how see a spirit, she.. leaves me speechless, she shows me what she does for people in my dreams, the once scary part though, is her path crosses with me in reality from time to time. These days that makes me smile, my ownly wish would be the gift of not having to look at her in the blind, I want to be able to turn around, even if it ment seeing all the demons and other spirits that do not walk by my side. Aparently.. only god can see this.. 'so she said'.

I'm 19. I shouldn't 'think' this way.

My Anxiety says, 'You're 19, you have alot more thinking to do'.

She says I have a purpose.

'They' tell me I'm worthless.

And everything else smiles...

thankyou... :)

you wouldn.t believe how relieved i felt to find out there's a name for this. Sleep paralysis, i kind of thought.. But the hallucinationn part of it, i'm glad i'm not the only one. It really feels like being possessed by an evil spirit.. Best way i can explain anyway!
They started for me when i was 13, i am now almost 22. When it first started happening to me i was so confused.. I'd be literally crying to my parents because i was so scared to go to sleep!! I'd get several a night some nights. I'd either feel like i was being pushed through my bed, or between my bed and wall, or i'd be lifted off my bed and span round.. I'd have 'nasty lookin' men sat on my bed, walking in my room, getting in my bed and on occasions trying to touch me up and rape me!! So horrible, the more i try to move.. It feels The less i can, then i cant hardly breathe.. I start to panic, it's unbearable!! Feels like it is lasting forever!! :( i've tried to scream but nothing comes out. I have been in bed with a boyfriend and scared him because i was shaking and sweating, he had to shake me to wake me and even then i didnt wake straight away.
I dont understand the sleep cycles tho. Unless mine are different, Because i will just literally close my eyes and drift off then the ringing in my ears start and the panic and paralysis sets in. I finally wake from it.. Then when i go back to sleep it'l happen again. I dont get it everynight, but when i do i get it upto 5 times in a night!! I'm not a religious person. But i find that if i try to calm myself and tell myself i'm not scared, it is over so much sooner!!
I went doctors about it and he sent me away just thinkin i was weird. Anyone i've spoke to (which isn't many people after how my doc made me feel) has never experienced anythin like it. So glad i'm not the only one!! Is there any medication anyone knows of? Or do we just have to get on with it? Xxxx

sureshot's picture

i feel ya

I have gone through HELL and back! I know you stated your not religous. Believing in God is not being "religous". I have found through all this EVERY SINGLE TIME THAT I FINALLY SAY "Jesus help me" BAM it is gone. You do not have to go to church or be a Bible thumper and preach in order to have a relationship with GOD. He is everywhere with us. It may sound silly to you but how ironic is it that the second I manage to say the word JESUS it flees? That tells me it is an evil presense. I do not believe any of this scientific crap for nothing. Nobody wants to admit we have constant spirit war going on.........ALL THE TIME. I am a child of God and I think that is one reason the attachs are so very bad for me. I am NOT preching at you I am just trying to help. Why not try it one time? See if Jesus saves you from your attach. It does not mean the attachs will stop but they may for a while or slow down and when they start back up turn to him again this could be a test of our faith. I am just stating it works for me and would not even BELIEVE what all I have been through. Good luck to you......Sureshot

I cannot tell u how right u

I cannot tell u how right u are! Everytime I have this I say Jesus or in the blood of jesus and all these evil presences just go away which tells me right there its more than this scientific thing man came up with. Thanks so much for posting ur comment :)

Your the first person I have

Your the first person I have come across that experiences the symptoms within minutes of falling asleep, just like I do. Have you found any relief through medication, or any other path. Please feel free to contact me if you feel comfortable talking about it, as it would be great to see how someone else deals with it.

Hey there I read your

Hey there I read your comment. I've never commented on here before, but experience this since I was 16. The reason I'm writing you is because in my situation it happen to me when I am about to fall asleep. Like you say within a few min I feel a strong presence or weight over powering my body. Sometimes I'm able to get out of it by forcing my body to try, and move before it get to strong. To tell you the truth the only way I feel it goes away is when I make my thumb and index finger into a cross. It's horrible when the yell my name. Even feel something touching you in Sexual matter. I do believe in god, but am not a completely devoted person. I had this occur tonight, and was once again just doing some research on it. I see comments about people being in other places but normally for me it always begins where I am in my bed everything is exactly the same, I just hear see, feel demon like presence which who knows what the hell they are. I can't breath sometimes, also get picked up in mid air in my own bedroom. It's pretty scary but I try not to scare myself to much. I also wait before I go back to sleep. Make sure to move my body, and get up. I notice if I try going back to sleep it happens immediately as soon as I start to fall asleep again. That's why sometimes I feel like it's so real because it seems like I am really awake, and everything is actually occuring. Well write me back I would love to hear how you deal with this. I'm still trying to catch my breath as we speak. I'm not scared like I use to be but tonight was pretty bad. God Bless goodnight I hope!

Serendip Visitor's picture

This happened to me tonight.

This happened to me tonight. I told my boyfriend who was in the other room but I'm sure he just thinks it was a bad dream. It doesn't happen very often, maybe once every 3-4 monthes but when it does very scary. I researched this today for the first time only because I heard voices this time like it speaking to me in different language(evil I think). I do believe in God, not sure if this is some sort of warning or just the devil trying to take advantage but either way it is the scariest feeling in the world. The dream that I was having before my attack tonight wasn't even scary. It is a relief to know that someone else has experienced this and that I am not just crazy.

Good news or bad news??

I'm not sure if I should take the symptoms you describe as good news or bad news. What your describing is almost a mirror image of what happens to me...almost. So should I believe in logic and rational thought that we suffer from the same disorder? But why are our symptoms so close? How can we be paralyzed within minutes of closing our eyes??? Not falling asleep, simply closing our eyes?? So much I would like to ask or at the least talk to you about. Here is my email address: please contact me and maybe we can exchange stories, questions, and hopefully answers a little more directly.

What happened last night.

So last night was honestly so scary for me. so, I'm 17 years old.
It all started off with me dreaming a normal dream. I was walking through the hallway in my high school, and going to my locker. Then i just remember everything going black, I couldn't see anything. untill i finally realized that i was "awake." My head was just under my covers. when i tried to move, i couldn't. my body was compeltly frozen. This has happened to me before in the past, but for some reason it always seems to make me feel mortally in danger. I remember laying there, trying to move with all my might, and all of a sudden i heard what sounded like a million voices speaking at once in my left ear. they were not understandable, and it was almost like loud ringing/buzzing/and voices at the same time.
it scared me so much. I was paralyzed. then, no lie, i felt something pick up a peice of my blanket at the end of my bed, and let it go.
now, i dont have ghosts in my house from what i know of, but when this happened i almost got a sudden realization that there was a little girl standing at the foot of my bed, almost like she was playing with my blankets.
I couldnt move so i didnt see anything. but as soon as that happened, i heard all of the noises again in my ear SO loud. I finally got all my strength to sit up in bed.
and just as i did it, the noises were gone, and i was sitting in my dark room.

if anyone knows ANYTHING about this stuff pplease reply to me.
im really scared to go to bed tonight.

similiar hallucinations

I have been experiencing sleep paralysis for some time now. I am 21 years old and last night was the first time I have seen an actual ghost. Usually it is just an uncomfortable presence. But anyway, last night when the paralysis started, I heard someone knocking on my door, which was closed, and somehow I knew it was a little girl. Next thing I know she is standing next to my bed. I was not scared or intimidated but I am definitely confused. Are you close to any girls in your life you were molested at a young age? My ex-girlfriend of two years was and I have an extremely close bond with her. This may sound crazy but I feel as if the little girl is her spiritual childhood innocence visiting me. Let me know what you think.

ringing static noise

In the morning I hear a white noise-static sound like a radio or television set on with no channel. It gets louder and grows into a ringing sound. Imagine "sssssssssssssshhhhsshhhhsssshhhhhssssSSSHHHSSSHHHS 'brrriiiiIIIIIIINNNNG'."
It used to really scare me, now it's like this sadistic alarm clock thing.

My bro had this a few nights ago

My brother had a similar experience while we were on holiday last week. He woke up and heard whispering in his ears from an evil spirit and he was totally freaked out. He woke up my cousin in the next bed and as he did, he saw a shadow of a figure in the corner of the room staring at him. They switched the lights on and it was all gone. It totally freaked him out but I sat him down and explained that it was probably sleep paralysis. He is 20 and I started experiencing exactly the same stuff when I was around his age. I'm 25 now and about once a month I get these kind of dreams where I wake up in a paralized state. Interestingly that night it happened to my brother, it happened to me too - it could have been triggered by something we ate but I'm almost certain it's hereditary. You should ask members of your family if they've experienced the same thing. People usually mistake this for being "haunted" at night. My dad had the same thing when he was our age.

My solution is that I just remind myself that I'm having a sleep paralysis episode and its all in my head. Then I just take deep breaths and at the same time just joke about it in my head. It tends to feel less "evil" if you just think of it as a weird dream and let it humor you like its a low budget comedy horror film in your head.

Hope this helps!

I'VE HAD THIS ALL OF MY LIFE

KATIE,I THOUGHT I WAS TRIPPING UP TO THIS POINT.I HAVE TOLD VERY FEW OF WHAT I HAVE BEEN GOING THROUGH SINCE I WAS 10 YRS. OLD.I FIGURED EVERYONE WOULD THINK I WAS CRAZY!THE VERY FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED 2 ME I WAS A LITTLE GIRL.I WAS SLEEPING ON THE COUCH IN OUR BASEMENT THAT WAS NEWLY REFURNISHED,I FELL OFF INTO A DEEP SLEEP.IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SLEEP,I FELT AS IF SOMETHING WAS HOLDING ME DOWN WHILE I WAS AWAKENING.THEN I NOTICED I COULD NOT SCREAM,MOVE OR OPEN MY EYES!I STARTED PANICING BECAUSE I DID'NT KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO ME.THEN I TRIED TO FORCE MY EYES OPEN WITH ALL MY MIGHT.TO MY DISMAY,I SEEMED TO GET MY EYES OPEN JUST ENOUGH TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON.WHEN I DID THAT,I SAW A WOLF RUNNING RIGHT TOWARDS ME.I SAID JESUS 3 TIMES MENTALLY BECAUSE I STILL COULD'NT SCREAM.AS I SAID THAT,WHATEVER IT WAS,IT FELT LIKE IT SCURRIED OFF OF MY BODY LIKE IT GOT SCARED.THAT'S WHEN I STARTED BELIEVING IT WAS AN EVIL SPIRIT FOLLOWING ME.THESE EVENTS HAPPENED TO ME MORE AND MORE AS A CHILD ALL THE WAY TO ADULTHOOD.I HAVE SEEN SPIDERS,SPIRITS THAT SOUND LIKE THEY HAD CHAINS ON THEM WALKING TOWARDS ME,RATS,SNAKES,ETC.I NOTICED EVERYTHING I WAS DEATHLY AFRAID OF, I WOULD SEE WHEN I WENT INTO THIS STATE.I AM 30 YRS OLD AND AN HOUR AGO I WENT THROUGH IT AGAIN.I HAVE ALWAYS EXPERIENCED THE BUZZING IN MY EARS.I JUST STARTED EXPERIENCING A NEW SIGN.NOW I HEAR VOICES ALONG WITH THE BUZZING IN MY EARS BUT I CANT MAKE OUT WHAT THEY'RE SAYING.THE FUNNY THING IS,IT STOPPED FOR A FEW YEARS BECAUSE I WAS SO PETRIFIED THAT I STARTED SLEEPING WITH A BIBLE ON MY CHEST.EVERYTIME I WENT TO SLEEP WITH THE BIBLE,I WOULD SLEEP JUST FINE.THEN AS I GOT OLDER I STOPPED SLEPPING WITH THE BIBLE ON MY CHEST.IT STARTED UP AGAIN.NOW IT FEELS LIKE SOMETHING IS CHOKING ME ON THE INSIDE AND ITS DIFFICULT FOR ME TO BREATH.IT ALSO FEELS LIKE MY HEART IS BEING SQUEEZED LIKE ITS ABOUT TO STOP.IM SO SCARED,I SLEEP IN INTERVALS AND I DONT SLEEP ALL NIGHT ANYMORE.I HAVE'NT HAD A GOOD SLEEP SINCE I WAS A LITTLE GIRL.SOMETIMES I THINK IF I GIVE UP AND DONT FIGHT IT OFF,IT WILL KILL ME.PLEASE REPLY BACK.I THOUGHT I WAS ALONE.

Keep the bible around you

Keep the bible around you when you sleep, everytime you sleep, scientists believe the hallucinations are from anxiety, but what your explaining is something worse, there are a lot of people that said his name or started praying, and it went away, that's not coincidence. It may be possesion, because read about the signs of possesion, and there are more than a few you mentioned that are apart of it

I just had this last night.

I just had this last night. Second time in my life. Last time was two years ago.
I had a very bad dream. Fact was, i knew i was dreaming and i did my best to step out of my dream. And i succeed. Only to find my body frozen in bed. I couldn't move. I just lay there. I fought with every strenght i had in my body to move a single limb. After a few frghtfull moments i succeed to move my body again. And i was sitting up in bed again with a terrible headache.
I wanted to know what it was and i am glad i am not the only one who hade this experience. I want to add, i think i have never heard any whispers or footstepps or things like that. But i am a atheist and if i do hear theme in the future i will know it will only come from my own brain. Take care all of you.

Multiple times in a row

As of just awhile ago, I went through multiple SP's in a row.. about four. I just decided to get up since I was trying to force sleep in order to pass time. Each time there seemed to be some kind of story so I just tried to finish it over and over. Now I'm terrified that my sleep will be plagued with nothing but SP's instead of normal sleep. If you have anything to tell me about this horrific experience or whom I should talk to about it then by all means give me an email: =)

No ghosts here

I've had these experiences on and off for years. Never ghosts or evil spirits probably because I don't believe in them but the experiences feel very real. It's hard to know whether they happened or not. People in your room talking to you, etc. As the years have gone on I've learned to know that it's not real but it feels absolutely real minus the bed shaking and not being able to move. One time I flew down the street, that felt real too. It's a very vivid memory. It only happens when I lie on my back, if you don't want it to happen I would think you'd have better luck sleeping on your side? Anyone know?

Serendip Visitor's picture

@ No Ghosts Here sounds a

@ No Ghosts Here sounds a little like astral projection the flying down the street part.
but anyways i have had sleep paralysis for some time now, and luckly have never encountered an evil presence or seen the such, however for the first time last year I started to get the sensation of my stomach being pulled from my body, a very real and uncomfortable feeling (think The Fourth Kind, something like that) this only happens occasionally.

but I find for all the young people who are scared (by the way im 23) the best thing to do is to relax and think about something positive, also this sucks but i found the more often i had episodes the more i became not afraid, doing research also helps. on trick that i find to work is to try to wiggle your toes or otherwise dont try to wiggle or move at all as it makes it more discomforting. Lately I have not had SP so much but now i am also able to tell when its coming on and come out of it before it starts.

strange daze

last night (i thought) was the first time i have ever dealt with anything like this before. i usually go to bed around 11 and this night was no different. i clicked my radio on, laid down, and waited for sleep to come. when i woke up the static in my head was so loud i couldnt hear my heart even though it felt like it was about to explode out of my chest. as i lay there tryin my hardest to move i got this strange feeling this had happened to me before. I was raised a christian and they always taught me in a time of peril call of god and he will save you, so i did. i laid there asking god to save me from these demons that were attacking me and to my suprise nothing happened. i still couldnt move and the static seemed like it was going to burst out of my head. this went on for what seemed like an hour until i literally bursted out of whatever was holding me. i got out of bed went into the kitchen got a drink of water and fell back asleep. when i woke up this morning i could remember everything and i could remember other times that this has happened to me. I honestly do not believe this is the work of ghosts or demons or sleep paralysis.
where do you run when even your mind isnt safe?

Im scared to sleep

I have been dealing with this issue since I was 10 when I was molested. I would wake up but could breathe and I was paralyzed.. for several minutes. Somebody was trying to pull my teeth out of my mouth while I couldn't move. I saw a white object and I couldn't breathe. These episodes went on for years. Never knowing when they would come.

I just woke up from a dream where all I could see is my daughters tears running down her face while her father stole all of my vehicles and broke into my house like he was to kiill me and my boyfriend. I lost my daughter for 2 years due to fighting in the family. The grandparents have her on a regular basis and I see her every weekend now.

I am scared to death to go sleep, that dream was so real... I awoke when I believe he was going to kill me. Im scared to lose her again. Im getting married and my life is back straight. Why is this happening again when I thought I had no anxiety.

Im sick of being scared to sleep, I want to sleep like everyone else. It just keeps getting worse. I want out! Any suggestions from anyone please help. Any medicine? Every doctor I talk to sends me to a phscye or whatever. I need something to help me sleep and I have delt with my issues throughout my life.. this shouldn't be happening anymore and it is coming back and I am scared I will not wake up one time.

When this last episode happened I could not wake up. I have trained myself to somehow snap out of what is going on... but this time, i woke up running around the house making sure all is well. I had completly forgotten I didnt even have my daughter tonight. I thought her father had taken her away , like he has tried before.

is there anyone out there like me?

i cant believe i'm not the only one

This has been happening to me for a long time since I was young. I am 21 now and it has happened to me so many times that I just dealt with as if this is just what I go through. But what made me research it today, is because earlier today I had another "experience" and it just felt too realistic than the past, too scary. I am amazed that I found an article talking about this and that it even has a name "sleep Paralysis"...and even more amazed to scroll down & see comments. I was relieved to see a scientific explanation for it but got scared again when I read these comments & like most of you...just really believe that its some kind of spirit or ghost.

I don't know people remember me on here. It's me Kym

I recall my last know SP episode some time in the summer -
Now Jan. 1st I haven't experienced any problems.
I won't say they are gone.
Maybe I'm starting to sleep through them. I honestly don't know.
But I want you all to know that you are not alone. We all have shared the common experiences such as the demonic laughter , the hearing of footsteps, the ringing, the whispering near our ears, feeling something touching your body, the weightlessness, seeing shadowy figures, etc
I've been dealing with that since I was 11.
Ever since I moved into an old house in the Woods.
I use to tell my mom and she would denounce it.
I wasn't 100% religious even though my mom practiced the baptist faith.
Now I'm a lot closer to GOD.
I'm not pushing religion on anyone. It comforts me because at times as a kid I was scared out of my mind during those SP episodes & I felt so alone
I am glad this forum exist.

Woo-hoo for ghosts!

I'll begin by saying I've lived with ghosts for nearly half of my life. The first experience I remember was when I was twelve, and I am twenty-two now. Every place I live seems to have one (and not the same one). The only ghost that has ever followed is one my boyfriend named "Wally." He's from my guy's old apartment, and we've all become very friendly with him. :] Anyways, in the place we live now, there's yet another ghost...and possibly something that stuck with me from my dad's apartment.
Several months to a year after I moved back in with my dad and brother, I started to experience this "Sleep Paralysis." It happened suddenly one night, and happened pretty much every hour after going back to sleep. It happened several more times after that. I felt arms around me (they felt long and thin, but very strong), heard demonic laughter and even felt breath by my ear...It stopped for a while once I moved in with my boyfriend. That was about a year ago. It happened again a couple times when I visited my dad and spent the night. I figured my boyfriend was kind of like my protector. It didn't happen again until recently--maybe a week or so ago--when we slept over a friend's house. I couldn't figure out why. And just two nights ago, it happened again in our own bedroom. What surprised me the most was that it only happened once, while I slept facing away from him. I started to wake with a dream that something evil was making me sink between the bed and the wall. I tried to pull myself back up but couldn't. Before that went any further, I manages to open my eyes, and soon after yell "baby!" (trying to wake him for help, I guess). Needless to say, he didn't wake up...but it didn't happen again because I made sure to hold him close for the rest of the night. It hasn't happened since.
With all I've experienced, I can no longer make myself believe that it's just a mental thing. I'm not religious, but I'm not ignorant to spirit energies, either. At least I'm getting better at breaking free.

In the Name of Jesus...

Just the other night, I was laying in bed and i woke up to strange thumping noises in the attic over my room. My dad has explained to me that its a large rat, racoon or critter of some sort that lives there in the winter and eats its own escrament. (ive seen the attic, its empty) So i just think its a rat and try to go to sleep. Well, this time the noises it was making were much louder than what a rat can make, it sounded very violent and.."disturbing" my sleep. SO, i put it to test. I let it go on for a while, but then said out loud "In the name of Jesus, I rebuke all disturbances, in jesus name i pray". Seconds after i said that, the noise immediately stopped. Just like that, i lay there waiting to hear even the slightest noise, and heard NOTHING. At that moment, i was relieved, God is so good and powerful :) Another thing that happened also was my brother coming to me and telling me he was attacked too. Ive always told him about my experiences ( ive had many since i was a little girl, attacks, all sp connected, by demons) so he would always write me off that demons didnt exsist and i was the crazy one. Well things changed, after he experienced it for the first time ( hes 22). He said he was laying in bed thinking about me, a lil worried ( i was out late w friends) and he fell asleep and a cat-like figure jumped into this room from a window and jumped on top of him like it was gonna scratch him, he said he was paralized and couldnt move. Then he woke up. Well he came to me and told me about it, i told him he needs to pray to God, and cover himself with the blood to avoid these attacks. One IMPORTANT factor in all this is that this happens to BELIEVERS and NON BELIEVERS of chirst. The devil and his demons want every single soul destroyed and far away from Jesus Christ, he is like a lion, ready to kill and devour. So people, this is why this happens to you even if you are christian, muslim, agnonstic, or atheist. But there is ONE TRUTH and ONE WAY and thats JESUS CHRIST. WAKE UP AND SEARCH FOR HIM, HE STANDS AT YOUR DOOR (HEART) AND KNOCKS, ITS UP TO YOU TO OPEN THE DOOR AND LET HIM IN (HEART) OR NOT. AMEN :)

why!?!?!?!?

So this is so wierd this has only happen to me a few times it first started when I was 26 Im 29 now and even still its only been a hand full of times, so this last time was really scary, i woke up about 4:30 am and had to use the bathroom then went back to sleep and set my alarm for 8:30 when my mind awoke and my body did not i heard my boyfriends voice(he was not in the house) then felt something jump on the bed with me, my eyes were opening and closing so fast almost like a camera shutter, i was such in a panic i tried to kick whatever off my bed it was a small shadow then i finally woke up and felt very tired and weak and scared....... i have grown up in a very christian family.....i dont know why this happens but i dont want to sleep..... its as if it gets worse and worse.....

Serendip Visitor Ti's picture

re:why!?!?!?!?

I think a lot of this has to do with our Christian upbringing. The demons are in our subconscious mind and they can be very real.
I have had similar dreams with sleep paralysis, and they are very frightening. Because of our Christian upbringing, the subconscious mind also believes that God will/can save us. I suggest, when this is happening focus all your efforts into saying God's name (Jehovah). I hope you will find that once you say His name you will awaken. Once you are fully wake, say his name again, to cast away the demons. Religion, it is powerful stuff.

Serendip Visitor's picture

I agree

Religion is very powerful, not only saying the name of God is enough. It is necessary not to fight against any figure you may see. You have to understand it as a poor entity and wish it the best you can... light, love and peace. The fear stops and everything will be fine.

Serendip Visitor's picture

I've had chronic sleep paralysis since I was a little kid. The trick is to focus on breathing through your nose , don't pant. The more oxygen to your brain stimulates the muscle contraction for your brain to realize your body is "awake". Often when your eyes are open you are still in a state of dreaming or hallucination , this is when people start letting their fears manifest into scary hallucinations , dark shadows, persons, etc. standing by their bed , etc. And it becomes a lucid nightmare. SP is often triggered by stress, caffeine, diets, sometimes nightmares/anxiety while asleep, or even individuals who have high brain activity when sleeping. People often think these experiences are alien abductions , encounters with ghosts or out-of-body experiences but the majority of the time it's just SP.

I never panic

i've never panic when it happened to me what i did is to listen closely to the sound getting louder in my ear then i try to move if not i try to "piss" believe me it works maybe there are some flaws to this so thats my way.

JPEG's picture

It has happened to me a few

It has happened to me a few times. It didn't terrify me, and I didn't think of evil, gods, oogie-boogies or anything like that. However, it was mostly just annoying and alarming that I couldn't move on command. Sometimes, I thought I had succeeded in truly waking, but then realizing later that my mind had tricked me and I was still sleeping and in the paralysis. After a few cycles like that, my brain probably realized what was going on and "re-booted".
I'm mature and smart enough to not believe in gods, though I know most people grapple with superstitious tendencies.
If you are religious or spiritual, I imagine it could scare the living hell out of you.

This s.p has also appened to

This s.p has also appened to me three time.First was when i was around 14,then very soon after. My first experience i was asleep and awoke wit great fear.i didnt see or hear anything, but a felt like i had to go hide under my bed cause something was going to get me,i tried to move and scream but couldnt,i had my eyes open the wole time ,i could fell my heart racing,i remember crying out for god, after doing so i could move, then was to to scared to even get out of my bed, after then fell back asleep, the second was more physical,i woke up with my whole body tingling{i can best explain this feeling as a buzzed feeling} my eyes where open and i could see a white glow around me,i tried to move but couldnt after 5 seconds of praying for gods help i could move again,i jumped out of my bed with a redness ( kinda like a heat rash, thats stays for a little)all over my body that had a burning sensation. This is the scarriest thing tats ever happened to me,im 28 know and just learned of this S.p,i would ask around and i heard once that a witch was riding my back, wich alawys made me think that what happened to me was demon,or a dark force, ect.im just stumped of why so many people ave such evil and dark experiences, and why does it stop when we pray.Weird, scary, the page did say that part of your mind can wake up while the body is still in this "paralized stage" and it can take a couple sec to awake.the third time this happenedi was falling into a deep sleep and awoke ,but not completly and had the feelling of fear and i dissmised it and fell back to sleep immedetly.Im so happy i got the google twitch and started googling every question i had or every what is this or whats that about, then i thought of those terrible memories and was like im looking it up!!it helped me somewhat,it has not happened for 6-7 years and hope it never happenes again,so scarrrrrrrrrrrrry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last night I had fallen

Last night I had fallen asleep around 8 and woke up at 4. I put my blankets back on me and was laying there listening to classical music. I guess I fell asleep with out realizing? It was weird. I didn't see or hear anything evil or dark, just enya singing " only time". I was laying there and it felt like something was on me, then it got harder to breathe, then it got heavier on my chest like my 200lb sister was sitting on my chest, I couldn't move, I couldn't speak, I could only take deeper breaths loud ones bc I could hear them, I was trying to scream, trying to call " dad!" but.... Nothing, I only let out a scream/ sigh when my body was released. I've always had hallucinations sine I was born (especially with feavers ) but this one felt like someone was touching me. I prayed while this happened but it freaked me out more. It's now 6:20 and my body aches. Could this be bc Im reading a semi dark ish book? I know I sound kind of dumb but I'm only 15, please help, I'm afraid

Serendip Visitor's picture

It could be due to the book,

It could be due to the book, you should pray and ask for forgiveness, dark books could have a lot to do with this.

Pray and ask for forgiveness. Jesus loves you.

Serendip Visitor's picture

It could be something

It could be something scientific
such as the blood stopping blah blah or what ever and can have a good example why it happens.
It used to happen to me two it still does every once in a long time but to fear nothing
and to be able to truly be in peace with your self, you should accept that there i only one god and that Jesus was a prophet and so was Mohammed. you need to talk to god and ask him to guide you, he who created you and all man kind, the evil and good....i dont wana sound smart im only 18 and want to help you out because i know how it feels like 2 b in your position, so just google and research god (Allah) and understand for your self instead of what you hear from others and i promise you will feel much better
hope to hear back
