Sleep Paralysis: Awake But Still Asleep

Hiro Takahashi

A person may wake up and find himself unable to move or speak as if he is frozen. He also may hear footsteps, see a ghost-like creature, or feel someone sitting on his chest. Throughout the history, people considered this phenomenon as work done by evil spirits. However, the modern science can explain the terrifying event as a Sleep Paralysis.

A Sleep Paralysis is possibly a hereditary disorder in which one experiences very frightening seconds or minutes of total body paralysis with little respiration and eye movements (1). A victim in this state feels awake, but he cannot move or speak (2). In addition to the immobility, the common symptoms include feeling choked or suffocated, hearing strange noises like footsteps and voices, seeing beings or dark shadows, and feeling an existance of someone in the room (1). Although these symptoms often direct the victims to believe in ghosts, mistransmission of neural signals in the brain causes Sleep Paralysis. When a person sleeps, his brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contraction (3). If he comes into consciousness before the brain sends signals to activate muscle contraction, he cannot move his body, and consequently, become "paralyzed"(2).

In order to understand how a body becomes paralyzed while the person is awake, it is necessary to understand sleep cycles. In a mammalian sleep, the brain activity undergoes two different states called non-REM (NREM) sleep and REM sleep, which differ very much from wakefulness (3). NREM and REM sleep alternate cyclically through the night; in human, about 80 minutes of NREM sleep starts a night of sleep, about 10 minutes of REM sleep follows, and this 90 minute cycle is repeated about 3 to 6 times during the night (3). During NREM sleep, a body produces few movement, but the body has capability of tossing about in bed and producing some other motor events, such as sleepwalking and sleeptalking (3). The cardiac-muscle contraction and breathing occur at a uniform rate, and the eyes move slowly (2). During REM sleep, on the other hand, heart rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure vary (3). The eyes move rapidly because most dreaming takes place in this period, and the sleeper probably "look" at the moving objects in a dream (2).

The brain's control over muscles during REM sleep points out that in this period, a body is normally in the state of total paralysis, called a "nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis" (3). Probably to prevent a person from "acting out" a dream, the brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contractions (2). Although some peripheral muscles, such as the muscles of the fingers and face, still twitch, the large skeletal muscles become relaxed, or "paralyzed" as a result (3). Some evidence supports that the motor paralysis of REM sleep protect against the acting out of one's dreams. A patient who suffers from rare syndrome called REM Sleep Behavior Disorder lacks the normal nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis, and he acts out violent dreams during REM sleep, often with injurious consequences (4). For example, a 60-year-old surgeon dreamt that he was attacked "by criminals, terrorists, and monsters who always tried to kill [him]" and fighting against them in the nightmare, he was actually punching and kicking his wife who slept in the same bed (4).

A nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis during REM sleep is accomplished actively by postsynaptic inhibition of motorneurons (3). Although the exact process of motor inhibition is not clear, some neurotransmitters and hormones are known to generate the many components of REM sleep. Aministering physostigmine, an inhibitor of the catabolic enzyme, increases the concentration of acetylcholine within the neurons in the pons, making it possible to artificially generate and start REM sleep in the middle of NREM sleep (3). Carbachol, the cholinergic agonist, produces a period of REM sleep in cat when directly injected into the pontine tegmentum (3). The hormone melatonin, a "master hormone" (5) that mainly controls circadian rhythms, also seems to play an important role in enhancing the REM state; the level of melatonin secretion by the pineal gland reaches its lowest during REM sleep (5). Such neurotransmitters and hormones probably activate or inhibit the activity of second messengers, which then activate or inhibit the third messengers, and so on till the last messenger inhibit the synaptic transmission or cause hyperpolarization of the motorneurons. And if, for some reason, the nervous or endocrine system continues to release the neural inhibitors, a person may experience Sleep Paralysis as he enters awakefully into or awakens directly from REM period (2).

While the modern neuroscience can describe the state of Sleep Paralysis as some errors of the neural transmission in the brain during REM sleep, a person who has seen or heard ghost-like figures/voices may easily believe that eveil spirits fully controlled his entire body. However, the images or noises, which the victim believes that he has seen or heard, are most likely hallucinations; and hallucinations, too, can result from the brain activity. In the 1960's, the Canadian neurologist W. Penfield introduced that electrical stimulation of the temporal lobe can cause the auditory hallucinations in the wake state (5). The buzzing or ringing sounds in the ears and other auditory hallucinations are closely associated with the activity of the auditory cortex and involves the temporal lobe (5). During the early period of sleep paralysis, the activity of the temporal lobe increases significantly, sometimes inducing hallucinatory sense (5). Similarly, the visual cortex generates internal visual stimuli, causing the victim to "see" terrifying figures during the paralysis (5).

How an episode of Sleep Paralysis induces visual or auditory hallucinations is still not clear, but it seems to have a significant relationship with anxiety (5). For anxiety is a neurocognitive event closely related to both psychological and physical processes, the extreme anxiety or panic may cause the release of several different signal molecules that trigger all kinds of physical events (5). A person experiencing Sleep Paralysis feels mortal fear or extreme panic, and hence, the brain generates and releases internal visual or auditory stimuli, producing hallucinations.

Also, hallucinations during Sleep Paralysis may happen, for one keeps dreaming even after some parts of his brain wakes up directly from REM sleep. Since the nervous and endocrine systems continue to release the neural inhibitors which sustain the paralysis, it may be possible that those systems keep releasing the neural activators that stimulate dreaming. Thus, a person continues to "see" the images and "hear" the noises produced in the dream that he has just had in REM sleep from which he has awaken.

Understanding more neural concepts of Sleep Paralysis, some researchers now hypothesize that a very rare condition called Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome (SUNDS) may closely relate to Sleep Paralysis (1). Upon the death, a SUNDS victim produces no body movement even though he experiences a myocardial infarction and strong breathing difficulties and should straggle in agony (5). The death may be caused by the extreme muscle atonia during Sleep Paralysis, which is so severe that even the cardiac muscles and the diaghragm paralyze (5).

Until I started researching on this subject, I have believed that the total paralysis of a body is due to an evil taking absolute control over the body. However, the interactions between neurons in the brain can explain this seemingly mysterious phenomenon in a scientific way. Although the explanation is not complete yet, for there are many unclear processes about Sleep Paralysis, the current hypothesis appears to reject the possibility of ghosts on this matter. Of course, it is impossible to completely disprove the existence of "spirits", "minds", or "God" affecting one's behavior. Nevertheless, like Sleep Paralysis and SUNDS, many or the mysterious conditions and behaviors which are only explained in supernatural terms probably result from brain.

I have been trying to figure out what was going on in my sleep untill i read this. Now i am happy to know what my body was expeiencing. It's quite scary your first couple experiences of sleep paralysis but now i'm gonna stay calm when it is happening to me and try to get my own understanding of the experience ... I have had sleep paralyisis at least once per month for the last 8 years. I am 29 as of this writing. I just had the experience about 1 hour ago and thus has caused me to do reasearch about it on the net. I noticed that many Dr.'s contribute this to anxiety, stress and other factors. My question is ... why is there always an evil presence in that concious yet body is still asleep phase? Today I heard a loud static sound, and opened my eyes to a spider crawling all over my arm. When I prayed to God, or said His name (Jehovah) the spider would start to disappear. I finally went thru my mental prayer when I awoke. This leads me to believe that it is more of a spiritual occurence, because I never have positive images while in this paralized state. I know there are many things in which our ancestors thought it was demonic rather than scientific, only to find there was a scientific explanation. However, I think this is different and cannot be simply written off as "scientific". There is not enough proof to show that it is scientific.

About a month ago I had another episode of sleep paralysis and I saw a small presence in the room with me. It was dark, and I could not see it's face (I am getting chills typing about it right now). My question is, why is there always an evil presence not only associated with my episodes, but so many others I have read about? ... Abel, 24 August 2006

i was thinking it is evil who do that during night but now i find out why. I am suffering from sleep paralyze possibly every nigh spicily when i have dinar ... Salah Nasser, 28 January 2007

I used to have this sleeping disorder when I was a child.  It has come back once or twice with adulthood, but otherwise, it is in the past.  I used to, with great effort, move my hand to my face and pull an eye open, which would wake me up, but sometimes the struggle was too much and I would go on into a deeper sleep.

Since the brain can do this to me, can it also cause me to get migraines just as I am about to wake up?

It seems, as I have discovered, if I get less than 4 hours sleep a night, I do not get migraines.  If I get 6 hours or more, it's about a 90% chance I will wake with a migraine.  Later in the day, I get an hour or two nap and that is the routine as it works.  Doctors just sort of treat the migraine and don't get into the sleep thing I have.  I take MaxAult for the migraines when they do get me.

I woke one time, and just as I woke, I felt this white-hot needle going into my head... bingo.  A migraine in 5 seconds.  That is how they can occur.  I wake with them otherwise.  I figure it my brain doing things it shouldn't.  I have a clean bill of health otherwise.

Thanks for your time.  Have a good day ... Jay, 11 February 2007

I have a question, and hope someone out there has an answer, it has been months and I have thus far failed to find one.  Has there ever been a record of anyone receiving the effects of sleep paralysis without having been asleep?  The reason I ask this, is a while ago, having not slept in a few hours, I was sitting at my computer, and it seemed to have happened to me. Within seconds I was too tired to hold up my own head, and my breathing got very difficult. Then I began to feel a sort of dizziness as my limbs lost feeling, and dropped to my side. after this, the dizziness turned to near blindness. I could see, but nothing would focus, and everything I tried to look at seemed to dart around like a mosquito. By this time I had no feeling in my entire body, could move nothing without quite a bit of concentration, and I could barely breath.  My mother heard me try and make out some kind of cry for help, and found me there spilled into my computer chair. She rolled me to my bed, and poured me into it. Within about 10-15 minutes I had regained everything I once had, but my sea legs did not ware off for another ten or so minutes.  I went to the emergency soon after. I had an E.K.G. and a C.A.T. scan, with no results, and I piss less in a week then the amount of blood they took that night. After basically telling me I was lying, the doctor told me that my symptoms did not fit anything at all.  What I do know, is I have been researching the issue ever since, and can only base my problem on Sleep Paralysis. All the symptoms match. And again, my question....Has there ever been a record of someone under the effects of sleep paralysis without ever having gone to sleep?  I hope you can shed some sort of light on this subject, as it,...well, it freaked me the hell out, and no one has been able to answer me!  Thank you for your time ... I used get this "evil paralysed me" feeling when i was paralysed and usually saw a ghost. i tried to shout or move but no sound escaped my mouth and couldn't move at all. it happened again yesterday and was almost convinced that ghosts/evil spirits were getting the better of me. But, me being a practical and logical guy, erjected this theory and started researching on this phenomenon. I came across this research paper on Sleep Paralysis. This greatly helped me in alleviating my fears. And next time i "see" a ghost during sleep paralyses, ill just laugh at it ;-)  Thanks for the research ... Siddarth, 10 December 2007

awake dreaming

so scared when it happened to me, i was thinking this is it, im dead i cant scream out im just gunna die in my bed right now, i could not move atall then i got up looked around my room saw nothing thinking to myself how could that have been a dream it seemed so real when it was happening i hope it never happens to me again, its like a feeling of being killed kind of slow, scary stuff

sleep paralysis

I started for me 10 months ago, and only happens occasionally. I always thought that the person is really in a dream then it is occurring. Because if I wasn't dreaming and was awake, I did some supernatural stuff. I rotated in my bed 360 degrees with my feet in the air. The thing is is that I was on the top bunch and my feet were over the edge of the bed, but I was still rotating around. When this occurs, I feel like I can't move or talk. I fight it as hard as I can when it occurs, and pray. It then goes away. If they say our brains can create auditory hallucinations such as voices, that's pretty weird, because the voice I heard that was speaking to me was ancient greek. I've also walked to another room and rotated on the floor. I really do believe that us who get it are actually in a dream that just seems real. Because when it is over I consciously wake up in my bed realizing it was a dream. If this website information is saying that you are actually awake. What a trip.

I had this happened..

..to me quite a number of times through out the years. I never really feel an evil presence or well.. I never feel anything other than numbness. It gets very hard to move at all, and if I do I feel weak. I try to talk and call out to someone but I realize I'm not actually making any noise. Sometimes I see my mother walk in and I try to scream at her to move me or touch me so that I can wake up. As always it feels as though I am just lying in bed, paralyzed, looking up at my bedroom ceiling. Nothing in the room changes and no one is there to kill me. What I do to wake up is I struggle with myself, trying hard to move my hands or shutting my eyes really tight, anything that can get my heart beating fast and I will wake up finally. This is however, very tiring and usually has me falling back into sp to the point were I have to get out of bed and just not sleep. It's very frustrating, and it's funny because one knows that they are dreaming or when they are about to slip into sp.
I found that if I sleep in a comfortable position I can avoid most sp.
If I sleep for a long time or nap during the day It is almost guaranteed to happen.

I guess I am just like many, living with sp and thinking this will eventually go away with time. Here's to that, and by the way, I am agnostic and 17 years old.
-Ney.

Similiar yet differs

I don't know what to make of all this. My story is similar yet differs. Before I went to sleep, I heard strange noises outside my bedroom window but neglected to check on it. After an hour or two. I began to hear noises coming from the attic. There was no way I going to check on that noise, Since it was pretty windy outside I figured it had something to with the branches hitting the attic. Around 1 am this morning I awaken or experienced SP. I could only see red, I heard two men talking but not directly at me. I tried to get up but could not move, I felt as if my entire body was shaking. Once the shaking stopped, I felt as if my two year who sleeps with me, got up, walked in a circle on the bed around my head and laid back down. When I was able to move, I opened my eyes to see that the t.v was static but quickly resumed playing. I continued to feel a dark presence. I prayed for God to protect us. I kept reminding myself of the old gospel song, this battle is not yours, its the Lords. I continued to hear knocking noises coming from the attic. After about five minutes, I felt as if the dark presence had left. Shortly after, my two year old woke up telling me that he was scared. We just moved into this house in August. He has never used the word scared until we moved in here. My kid wakes up running towards me to hold him, he is afraid to sleep without being in my arms on occasions, I am wondering if he suffers from this as well

i try not sleeping on my side

i try not sleeping on my side because then something spoons me! i always sleep on my side too.. but like you said, its happening more often now since being on this site - same here! i think its because we are thinking about it and worrying about it alot more and we are more aware of it. Going to sleep we worry its going to happen again each time and bring it on ourselves. one morning i lay in bed with my girlfriend and i kept drifting off to sleep, each time going into sleep paralysis! during it id be tryin to hit her and grab her to wake me and shake my legs kickin and screaming.. she said i was just shakin alot and breathing heavily and woke me. i was then drifting back off to tell her to watch me and see what she notices... im still lost on what to do!

Blessing of Sleep Paralysis

I'm a dream researcher and author of the book "Sleep Paralysis." I also have experienced SP since I was a child and have learned over time that SP does not have to be a nightmare. In fact, with patience and practice, we can turn the experience into a positive lucid dream experience. SP is also a gateway into out of body experiences and other kinds of creative states of consciousness. Many people report positive SP experiences, such as encountering angel-like entities, and also sexual imagery that can result in orgasm. The full spectrum of sleep paralysis visions are really still unknown.

If you would like to contribute to my sleep paralysis research, I invite you to contact me at my blog dreamstudies.org

It seems like it happend to me, but i'm not sure

This is the first time something like this has happend to me, so it's pretty scary, but also fascinating at the same time. I'm going to explain what took place in hopes that someone can tell me that's most likely what happend.
This occured at 6 this morning actually, so I wanted to get help on it.
I went to bed a lot earlier the night before, about 9:30 or so. I slept good and woke up at about 3 a.m. I read for a while and just walked around. Finally I got bored and thought I would try to sleep again. I was lying on my back, staring at the ceiling, just waiting to get tired, when I saw nothing but black. It didn't come suddenly, it moved from right to left. My first thought was that someone was in my room. Then it felt like a hand pressed against my back. My whole body got numb and tingly. Head to toe. Like chills, but I wasn't cold. I wasn't able to breath or scream. Believe me, I tried to. I think I started to shake up and down, caused I was very confused by it. I remember asking myself why that was happening. I could feel my heart pounding out of my chest, when I looked down I could see it. I thought for sure it was going to explode. I tried to sit up, but realized I couldn't move any part of my body. I don't think I fell asleep, because I could clearly see my window in my room. That's what I focused on the entire time. It lasted for about twenty-thirty seconds, before I was able to sit up again. I could easily say I had dozed off and started to dream, but the weird part about the whole thing was that once I was able to get out of it, I could remember everything that happend, but my body wasn't reacting to it. I felt nothing emotion wise. My heart was barely beating and all I could do was stare. I no longer wanted to cry for help, I didn't feel afraid anymore, I just wanted to stare. I could move again. I actually got up and stared at myself in the mirror. I thought maybe I had a seizure, but I had no loss of time or memory and I've never had one before, so it's not likely. It seems like I could have suffered from Sleep Paralysis, but i'm not exactly sure for this has never took place in my life. I'm just not sure.
I will be the first one to admit that I love to sleep...not anymore. I'm scared now...

The exact same thing happened

The exact same thing happened 2me. I woke up at about 3am and went back to sleep. But while I was asleep I felt my pulse racing, then I couldn move my body, then my heart felt like it was going to rip out of my chest, beating so fast it was like vibrating. In all of this my eyes were half open as I cld see the tv I left on, picture changes and all.it has happened to me several times since I was 17. Now I'm 26, though it seems I do not hear voices anymore or feel like someones is in the room. I still get the same feeling though like a weight is on my chest, paralysed and now my heart racing like it will explode! When I regain conciousness I feel normal. WIERD! I'm so scared to sleep, been scared for years

i have this all the time. the

i have this all the time. the last time was ghosts or something, a number of them in my room talking to each other and pokin me, i remember one saying to another who i think just arrived later than the rest, and he said..touch him its weird or something.i also felt as if somebody bounced a ball off my head!i cant remember everything exactly, but when i was in the state of trying to wake myself i was trying desperatly to reach out and hit my gf for her to wake me until i woke. the scariest time was another nite when i woke to somebody spooning me, i was afraid to turn around but the longer i left it for the scarier it became..it used my mums voice and said something along the lines of 'everything is ok' i picked up the courage and somehow turned myself around and pushed it, that slight second of getting out of the paralysd state i couldv swore i seen some kind of demon just vanish as i swung my arm. i dont sleep unless im with somebody, or ill put some cartoons on - and im 23!

I get sleep paralyzed almost once a week...

i recently get Sleep paralyzed at least once a week that i don't get scared by it anymore ....
i was on my bed trying to wake up, sometimes i hear strange noises but sometimes i see like red stuff everywhere,
the color almost looks like blood and I once get choked almost to death by something that i couldn't see... In my dream, my body feels really weak, i couldn't move nor make any noise, i once tried to scream for help but it feels like i have no voice at all. The view in my dream was 100% the same as before i went to sleep and after i woke up. It feels like the only thing i could do is open my eyes. Since im a Muslim, usually when i get this kind of dream, i would read verses from Quran that i memorized, over and over again in my head until i wake up. Usually when i woke up from that kind of dream, i don't feel anything at all, i thought that i would feel tired and sweaty but once i woke up, it feels normal. dreams usually don't stick in my head, i would forget a lot of dreams but for this kind of dream, i cant seem to forget it, and it almost feels like it really happens in real life.

This happened to me for what

This happened to me for what I thought was the first time. In the dream I was trying to get my family out of an apartment that was inhabited by an evil spirit. I began to run through the apartment and scream fir it to leave in the name of Jesus our savior & woke up paralized. Was scared & couldn't move and could barely move. I was tingling all over. I prayed & slowly I began to move. I began to research online & found this info helpful. I have always had vivid dreams & began to link this with previous bad dreams or hallucinations. My stmach & chest still hurt today and my legs a really sore.

It gets old after a while.

I am 27, It happens to me sometimes. Sometimes I end up swatting spiders that are not even there. The most recent time, I woke up staring at a pair of red eyes. I stared for a min, but eventually my eyes focused and it was just my PS3 and I could move again. I see a lot of stuff, people poking theyre head around a corner whatever. Right now as I key this on my cell phone, I am almost crying for some reason. So when it happens to me nowadays, after I realize what is happening. I just focus and get a little angry. I am known to beat up my pillow. Also it doesnt matter where u live or what u do, who u are. Its going to happen. Just focus, or whatever u do that works. Good luck, dont worry.

Wow this article is so

Wow this article is so informative and helpful. Been skimming through threse comments, not feeling so alone now. I don't know anyone else personally who has experienced this. Whenever I tell someone about it they think I'm either crazy or lying. Sleep paralysis experiences can be so terrifying. The first time it happend to me I was convinced it was some sort of evil spirit. Had no idea about sleep paralysis at the time. I woke up from a dream of being attacked by a shadow person. I felt them throw me down on the ground, that's when my eyes opened at I felt totally awake, but I couldn't move and the shadow was on top of me. It was terrifying because I was awake, my nightmare should've been over but the shadow person had their hands my neck and I kept trying to scream but nothing would come out. I really felt and thought that I as being strangled. I really thought I was going to die but then I could finally move and get up and the shadow disappeared. I couldn't sleep for weeks after that because I was so afraid it would happen again. Usually for me, when I have sleep paralysis, whatever I'm dreaming is carried over into the real world when I'm in that half wake/sleep state. There is almost always a shadowy figure involved.

Something I have noticed is I only have sleep paralysis when sleep on my back. I tend to move alot in my sleep so I can't really expect to stay in the same position I fall asleep in, but if I could offer any advice to any body, I would suggest trying to not sleep on your back. I don't know if this is the case for everybody though.

This is really freaking me

This is really freaking me out. Last Feburary I had a dream or SP episode that i was being drug off my bed by my ankles by a shadow person, much like a football player with a flat top. no face of course, and he was on top of me and attacking me. I couldn't breath nor scream for help even though my sister was commin down the stairs at the time. after that, he left, and i was awakened by a wonderful breath of air and chills and of course the feelin of hair standing on the back of my neck. it never happened again.

I had that same shadow

I had that same shadow standing over me a few times but when my friend saw it actually attack me outside It had red eyes . That when I realized I wasn't just seeing things. Watch for the signs. Don't believe everything you read. We are here for a reason and being attacked. We have to search deeper and ask for guidance from God. We are here to guide the lost.

Sleep Paralysis

Based on my experience, I think it's not true because early evening today, I just had a dream which i really thought was true and I was sleeping on my right side since I really felt cold 'coz of the AC and I had just taken a bath so I have to cover my head and my body with a jacket while a blanket covered my feet.I felt (not saw and I believe)a ghost passing on my bed just above my head. After that I just felt my bed and myself really shaking hard and the lights blinking over and over, and I know I was awake but I felt paralyzed and can't seem to wake up. So I forced myself and luckily, I was able to move.

Help

I'm going through the same reaction and I'm not sure how to deal with it. I'm very scared of the dark because of this reason. I recently had a dream that I was jumping over fences for whatever reason and cracked my knee on the way down. When I woke up that exact same knee was in a lot of pain. I'm not sure if this is the same thing or not but this hasn't been my first dream that seem to come to life. If there's a easier way I can control please explain. I don't understand what I'm suppose to do. Another thing that's going on...I can see a face image when I'm not focused on the area but if I draw my eyes to the spot the image fades away quickly. Can anybody explain this to me?

i am 30 years old and have been experiencing sp and lucid dreaming as far back as i can remember. the lucid dreaming is just an every once in a while treat for me but i always can control what I do in my own dreams. the sp used to just scare the crap out of me (not literally, thank god.) it is still pretty scarey but after being scared for so long i started trying to control my anxiety and fear.

the dream scenario i have the most when sp happens is that i am lying asleep exactly as i am in real life. most of the time not a single thing different. no objects moving that should'nt be, no wierd noises, nothing touching me or any feeling of being held down. even my animals are just sitting around exactly as they normaly would be. it actually takes me a few minutes to realize i'm asleep. here lately i have tried to just go with it and see what happens. the most exhillerating feeling i have gotten as a result from this is the feeling of being sucked out of my own chest. i have never been able just to let go and allow it to happen. i get too scared. obviously not being able to return to my body would be my biggest fear.

i have also had sexual oriented experiences. i have had the feeling of being spooned, fondeled, kissed, being lifted off the bed ect... but most of the time whenever i just go with it it ends up getting too intense and scarey. i start to feel like i'm being forced and one time even heard someone say to me 'the mercy at your defense is to make sure you do a good job'. i heard this when i was in that crazy eyes barely open trying to wake up part of sp.

Sleep Paralysis

Just wanted to make a comment to anyone out there who is going through this and is of the Christian faith...

I get SP too but I don't have episodes where I see or feel an evil presence. I just feel like I can't breathe and I start to panic. But if you believe in God you should know that any time you experience SP and see an evil spirit, it's not the spirit of someone who used to live in your house. It's a demon--and demons can take on any shape or personality. Humans only go to one place after they die and it's either heaven or hell. This is what God teaches you and you must trust in it. I don't know what causes SP but if it's evil there are things one can do to get out of it. A lot you of were talking about saying a prayer and it stopping--that's one option. You could also plead the Blood of Jesus. The Blood of Jesus is used for protection. When I'm scared I will say "the blood of Jesus" over and over again until I feel safe and protected. You could also pray before sleep--pray that the Lord will put a hedge of protection around your home and that his heavenly angels will surround you when you sleep. Always remember that when fighting off demons you need to be grounded in the Lord :) I hope this helps.

I don't know of anyway to completely stop SP. I'm going to try to eat healthier, sleep regularly (meaning at the same time every night for the same length of time), and I'm also going to get plenty of exercise. Hopefully this will reduce the frequency of episodes.

I also wanted to ask you all: what does it feel like once you get out of SP? I feel very weak and my head shakes, or rather, nods up and down uncontrollably. It only lasts for a few seconds though. Wanted to hear your experiences...

I don't know why I get it.. I can't pray sometimes when I try it won't come out.. tonight my voice made a funny sound.. I'm 21 and pregnant.. this has been happening since I was a teenager but I hope its not hereditary because it scares me

i recently get Sleep

i recently get Sleep paralyzed atleast once a week that i dont get scared by it anymore ....
i was on my bed trying to wake up, sometimes i hear strange noises but sometimes i see like red stuff everywhere,
the color almost looks like blood and I once get choked almost to death by something that i coulnt see... In my dream, my body feels really weak, i couldnt move nor make any noise, i once tried to scream for help but it feels like i have no voice at all. The view in my dream was 100% the same as before i went to sleep and after i woke up. It feels like the only thing i could do is open my eyes. Since im a Muslim, usually when i get this kind of dream, i would read verses from Quran that i memorized, over and over again in my head until i wake up. Usually when i woke up from that kind of dream, i dont feel anything at all, i thought that i would feel tired and sweaty but once i woke up, it feels normal. dreams usually dont stick in my head, i would forget alot of dreams but for this kind of dream, i cant seem to forget it, and it almost feels like it really happens in reality.

I had an sp experience when I

I had an sp experience when I was 10. I woke up (or atleast my mind did) to the sensation of someone sitting on my chest. Several years went by without another incident until this one now it happens a little differently. My body goes to sleep before I do. This wouldn't bother me so much if I could breathe. I spent the last hour and a half falling into paralysis fighting my way back out and then hoping next time I'll get it right and just fall asleep only to find myself back in paralysis fighting to breathe. I always seem to snap to just before I passout or suffocate I guess. Sometimes I can catch it just as it starts to happen(when I rapidly lose feeling of my body)and I sit up in bed only to lay back down and try again. I never thought I would forget how to sleep. Atleast I still remember how to make my heart pump ;)

Carrie's picture

What is causing this frequent SP?

I woke up a few minutes ago concerned. Usually I have such vivid dreams before actually falling asleep that I can feel movements in tham, and sometimes can pick where my mind wants to go. My brain dreams before I hit the NREM, and that's fine, Its just when it's the other way around I get concerned. It just happened again where I could not move from my position on the couch, yet knew I was awake. I could see myself being pushed through Walmart, in a buggy, with my arms placed in the way which I was laying. In the midst It was a struggle, like I was on a heavy drug that wouldmt let me open my eyes, and kept on showing me the story of what happened at the store. Eventually I spoke the name of the friend pushing me,thinking he was in my bathroom. but he was never over here today. The word was so loud when I said it droned on.I don't know what I came here to say, It's not as scary as it is interesting, but it began to happen last year. After reading up I dont know if I "have" this, or just an occasional integration of reality and dreams, it happens when Im out cold, or when painting. I find it strange though, that all theses posts are so recent, and current! Like something in the air? Iv'e always had what i call "interactive" dreams, and sounds of the wind, and radio merge and become a detail in them. But I dont understand not being able to wake up! I live alone...and it has a huge impact on you even hours later. Well I'm not alone, I'm so glad I looked it up right after! Maybe if the moderators made a poll? Like a private study? See what the ones exoperiencing this often have in common? Good luck, and Good night...

thakns god

yeah. i experianced this early this morning after like 3:40 or so. i was lyingthere tring to sleep but my nose felt dry and i couldnt and i was staring at a wall and started thinking of this scray song i heard before then felt like something evil was tring to take me to and evil place and i was so scared and my heart was pounding my ears were throbbing and then i heard really loud voices i couldnt understand and i was just trying to say "god help me" but i couldnt make a sound or move my mouth. i then finally could move after trying hard and i said God really weakly and then i cried and called my mom to coem into my room to save me and turn on my light so she came but she thought it was anightmare then i slept wiht my little sister and it happened 3 more times wihtout the noises though my heart did pound. i was so scared to go to sleep tonight but im gonna sleep wiht my little sis and try to relax and think of happy good things nad probably go to church more =P. i love god for saving me at that moment cause i was so afraid. it was so scary!!!

Sounds Familiar...I can say

Sounds Familiar...I can say that I am a logical, yet woman of the faith, never any extreme anxiety attacks, that I couldn't control. Except for once. While Awake. I'm not an expert but it sounds to me like It's a wake up call. Or thats how I would take it, and appearantly you have, amd I think that's awesome. It makes the most sense doesn't it?! But like you realized, sometimes we get so involved in our own little worlds all it takes is a nudge to get our attention! The "nudges" are always terrifying! What's even more ironic is that I just woke up an hour ago, from what I thought was sleep paralysis (reoccuring), and you know, just wanted to see if there was anything written about a Realistic dream state that you can't pull out of. I prolly would'nt have wrote all this, had I not seen what you wrote! Near the same time last night.. anyway, goodnight, Think happy thoughts!

Sleep Paralysis

12/15/2010 around 11am. I wanted to take a nap bc I had got up early this morning. I slept until about 1:30 and I guess you could say my brain woke up, but body didn't. I couldn't move, talk, or even open my eyes. I heard a penny drop on a tile floor. (my room has carpet) Then I heard nails scraping along my wall. I could feel someone right in front of my face breathing. Like 1 m.m. more and they would have been touching my nose. I could barely breath and my heart was racing. I started to get that paranoid feeling inside. At first I figured it was my cat coming to lay with me, but the thought of something else still scared me. When it was getting to the point I couldn't stand it anymore I finally opened my eyes and sat up quickly! My cat was no where in site. Thus, the reason why I am researching this :)

how to wake up on this situation fast

well, surprisingly through my own experience of being paralyzed EVERY NOW AND THEN... it is not a joke we all know this. its terrifying and i want to cry why this keeps happening to me. I am 19 yrs old, since 16, this keeps happening to me starting when someone told me that this "Sleep Paralysis" happens... it's like it will transfer to you and attack you when someone told you it happened to him. like this couple of days when my girlfriend had slept over on our home. i told her that you will experience sleep paralysis if you slept here. and what do you know. she woke up and hug me tight and crying. she said she had a dream where she slept and saw the cup move, after it move she can't move. Like what happened to my brothers wife. it's like our house has a guardian and its checking on someone new that will stay in our house...

well how about me? well, i usually experience this so called S.P even in the morning, afternoon, and 90% in 3-4 times in the evening... scary? hell yeah. i read about this a article about a week ago. and i made a self experience observation. if you did'nt notice yourself if you are trying to get asleep and once you fall on slumber, suddenly you will wake up and feel that you fell on top of building or you got hit by something or someone. PLEASE sit first or stand up before you sleep again. FIGHT YOUR DIZZINESS or else it will put you on S.P .

What is in my Dream? i also noticed that i have been dreaming of going to a place like an apartment or a dormitory house that i have been trying to escape and someone is trying to stop me sometimes i try to escape with a skateboard and i'm skating on the live cables on the pole and skating vertically on the walls. ironicly i don't skate. while in the dreaming process i woke up and hearing someone saying i have to shake something..

hey, did you notice that once you fell in this sleep paralysis all you can do is

open your eyes a bit?
feel that your mouth is speaking but doesn't have any sound or tone that comes out? and
close your eyes and let it all happen

on the third part

please don't because if you do you'll die, seriously

A piece of advice

while your on the S.P dont move your major muscles like whole body movement...
try hard enough to twitch your fingers hands and feet try to close them or spread them or something then you can wake up

pray. pray to god to help you move and shout his name to be saved.

If i may say

Don't you think why is this happening to all of us because there is something that is telling us?
or are we something like a chosen one? on something?

thank you for reading

Crzy shit Mike, this has been

Crzy shit Mike, this has been happening to me for over ten years I am 28 currently. Every time it scares the shit out of me. It started for me when I woke up from a nap one day in the day time on my couch, I was sleeping on my back, I opened my eyes but all I could me was my eye balls and my toes. Another time I felt like there was someones hands digging into my chest screaming at me but all I heard was whispers all I could move was my head back and forth. More often than not when this happends I will feel I cant move at all except for my fingers and toes and I feel like if I don't fight this I will fall deeper and deeper, so I fight it with everything I have to move my body so that I don't fall into what ever this is. I tell myself after it happends that the next time I will let myself fall but when it happends I am way to scared to.... I am always completely lucid when this happends also. I can't figure out a connectiong to when it happends and when it doesn't. I have tracked what Ive eaten throughout the day to what Ive done what Ive watched on tv before Ive slept but have never found a connection. You not the only one out there........

Jodie's picture

maybe we should keep a dairy of what happened the day before

I ate raisons before I went to sleep and had a SP nightmare and it was the day before a full moon. I think you are right about it having to do with something we eat or do. Everytime it happens from now on I am writing everything I can recall about what I ate and did. It is so nice to not be the only one that has these scary nightmares. If i hadn't found this site I would be very worried but just knowing it is common it makes me less scared for some reason.

worst one today..........

I've been dealing with this since I was about twelve year old. Wheni was younger the evil presence always seem to hover aroundmy bed and raise me from my sleep. The only way I'm ableto successful awake from it ,is if I say a prayer and my body begins to lower back into my bed. Today as I was trying to wake upi was being push against my bedroom wall with the coversvover my mouth.I was screaming for my boyfriends help buhe said he never heard me. My body floated throughout my while house and I could here my little girls playen. When I did awake I was right back in my bed untouch or harm. I'm twentyfour years of age and was wondering if this is just a sleep paralyisis? Or something that could actually harm me one day?

Locky's picture

Hey, the same thing just

Hey, the same thing just happened to me it was the worst one yet as i decided to research now because it made me so scared. The same things happened to me like am hoovering around my room bouncing off the walls like if there were no gravity. The weirdest thing about it is that i could open my left eye when i tryed real hard and could see clearly. It was like I could look into reality then i would loose strength in my eye and it would close and i would be back in that dream. I was so freaked out because i was at the point were i just wanted to wake up but couldnt for like 3 minutes till finally i blinked my eye and it woke me up straight away. The thing is i didnt mind going into this paralysis because i had no idea what it was and i thought i could control my own dreams till now. I would not recommend experimenting with it like me cause this last one i thought i was going to die because i couldnt breathe at points and it took me too long to wake myself up... so if you feel like your going into paralysis wake up before it starts!!

hi,i just wanted to say that

hi,i just wanted to say that what happens to you in regards to floating in the air, that use to happen to me alot especially this one time when i was sleeping at night i suddenly woke up and saw my self in bed but i was floating on top of my body if that makes sense but i saw a black shadow which was ripping my
heart out it had red eyes i was trying to shout out loud screaming but no one heard me all i kept thinking about is god.And after a few minutes i was back in my body.i thought i was going crazy, alot of these types of incidents occurred with me
but i really got fed up it was ruining my life,it got so worse that i actually started to see things which tried to harm me but fortunately it does not happened to me anymore it has been about three years now,but all this started with me when i was 12 too.

Caffeine and such.

My first experience with sleep paralysis was scary. I was really drunk when I passed out that night. I woke up in the middle of the night really thirsty and drank an ice tea because it was all I could find at the time. This caused my body to stay asleep while my mind stayed awake. I would dream while I was "awake" in bed. I too am curious as to why I never hallucinate positive images... such as a nude Jessica Alba or something. Another time I farted to wake myself from sleep paralysis.

Marisol's picture

amazing

I am amazed on how so many other people experience the same things. I am 40 and am having these more and more. It usually happens when I am falling asleep. I feel something horrible is going to happen. I dream that I am in the water and I am heading further and further down. As I get deeper in the water, I feel its harder to breath so much that I feel I am going to die. Then in my dream I realize it's only a dream. But when I want to wake up I can't, and while I am dreaming I tell myself, you need to move your arms so that you can wake up, but nothing moves. I struggle to do anything to wake up. Just when I feel I need to give up because I am going to die, I wake up in a state of panic. It feels like something is trying to take my soul. I told my husband that if I die in my sleep, its because of my dreams. I am tired of being tired.

I have tears coming to my

I have tears coming to my eyes as I read your post. Your are saying the words that I feel. I have experience SP since I was a child and now that I am an adult, I experience it even more. I too am afraid to go to sleep and I also advised my husband to wake me when he sees me struggling in my sleep. At first, I felt he thought I was some loon but I told him I could hear and see everything around me but I am just unable to speak. It is not until someone touches me that I am able to come out of it. There are times when I am alone and SP happens, I fight until I free myself and then I am soooo exhausted afterwards. I am so tired of going to sleep and not knowing if I will wake up. I have told my children to also wake me up if they see me struggling or fighting my sleep. They have witness my behavior as well. I am so happy that I decided to investigate and see that I am not the only one who is experiencing this. Now the question is how do I end this. I know what I am feeling as I go through this but I am seriously thinking about having my husband record my reaction. I am soo afraid. I will do more research to see if there is anyway or anything that can be done. I just want to sleep in peace.

the same

The same thing happend to me today, I had a dream that I was in a boat filled with water and I was trying to save my mother. I realized that I was dreaming and I tried to wake up but I only could open my eyes a little bit and ended up falling asleep again and my dream just continued. I had to open up my eyes with my one hand and 3hours later I'm still trying to stay calm.

This just happened to me

This just happened to me about 30 minutes ago. Horrible experience. This is the third time this has happened to me. I am 18 and all three occurences have happened in this past year. Whenever this happens I am alwaya having a bad dream. In this particular one, I was trying to save my family from evil. I don't know what the evil was but it felt so real. I was paralysed with my head turned sideways into my pillow. It was difficult to breath, couldnt open my eyes, couldnt move my body, and I thought I was using all my strength to scream as hard as I could for help. I know I couldnt move my mouth but I really thougth I was screaming. I felt a lot of pressure on my whole body .I felt like a bag of sand with most of the heaviness at my face. WHen I woke up my neck was sore from thge way I was being "pushed down." I escaped the paralysis by PRAYER. I said, IN THE NAME OF THE LORD REVOKE THESE BAD SPIRITS. Even just saying it in my head it worked. When I woke up I had expected my family to be running down to my room asking if I was ok but I was alone in my room. I cried for a while. This is so scary and I hope this never happens to anyone again.

Serendip Visitor's picture

The exact same story happened to me!

I thought i was the only one that went through that. I cant believe what i experienced you've experienced the same. It happened to me 2 days ago & am still terrified of going to sleep now. I was uttering prayer too but somehow this heavy weight pushing my head down the pillow wasnt letting me wakeup i was trying so hard to wake myself up. And i could feel something that i cant describe as such adreline rushing going through my mind then it went, then kuming back more harsh than before then it went again but the third time it happened it wasveven more harsh like my mind was shaking with force. I just lay their paralised my neck felt so stiff. Just Then i heard my husbands voice calling out my name only once and i was in my bedroom at the time thats wen the adrenaline rush feeling in my head dissapeard like it almost came out of me. I sat right up heavy breathing in my chest i waited couple of seconds in the dark thinking my husband would open my bedroom door, but i knew he still wasnt back from work, i was home alone. I asked myself oh my gosh wat just happend to me i was so scared. I was so shaky i switched on all the lights of the house! I knew that i had to quickly perform my ritual wash and prostrate in prayer. I have gone through this before when i was living at home with mum and dad but never like this severe. This has really opened my eyes though. Now I always say a prayer before i sleep now and i keep myself clean. I beleive there was a devil with me as i was sleeping, and i was unclean at the time which brings the devil closer if a person is unclean. My advice mainly is do alot of internet research on satan and how to live a normal life without them & seek protection from your Lord. Cus from wat i beleive the devil is weak and wont harm you aslong as prayer is concerned. Say a prayer at night too hope my advice helps. God bless.

Hi

I have had a few experiences in my life also. When I was a kid I felt I was being sit on and being smotherd. But later in life, much later,I feel somebody laying on my back and holding me. This has happened 5 times now. The feeling is a one of caring though. One time I heard a female voice saying she loved me and will always be with me forever. The other time I felt my fingers being rubbed very gently, this has happened twice. One other time as I felt this presence laying on me, I felt it kissing my left hand's fingers. I also am in a sleep wake state so I do not know if it is real or dreaming....but I am fully concious of what is going on. I feel though in my heart this is something different then sleep Paralysis.

Experiences..

hello, i just would like to share some of my spritual experiences that have happened since i was a little girl. Ive posted here before, but i didnt really go into too much detail about the horrible visions ive experienced. Since i was a little girl, i have always been very sensitive to spirits/demons. I also was raised in the Christian church, with my parents being believers in christ and family in the church/pastors. Although i was young, i knew there was a God. So we usto live in this house that i believe held alot of past spirits from the people who lived there before. In one occasion i remember i was sleeping on a ablanket on the floor and i woke up and looked at my blankets bc i saw little tiny creatures dancing around a fire pit. i looked at them in disbelief and got a little scared that i was seeing things so i went to my dads bed and slept next to him. When i looked up at him, i saw the same little dancing creatures around his face and mouth, so i closed my eyes scared. Then i opened them again and looked in front of me, and in front of the bed was a bathroom, the dorr was open, and when i looked inside there was a naked women with pale skin and dark hair, dancing in front of me. i closed my eyes, and fell asleep i guess, i was confused. Another night, i remember opening my eyes in the dark and seeing a large gorilla moving its arms and looking at me, i was once again scared and confused on why i would see these strange things, and i would think why would my mind create this visions, or were they really there?? Another time, that i can remember, is laying in bed and thinking that i was going to die in my bed and wake up dead, and i got all these disturbing thoughts in my head, and i realized that this wasnt me thinking this, and sort of like something was putting these evil thoughts in me.I also remember waking up bc my bed ws shaking. Well when we moved from that house, i was the last one to enter it bc my dad forgot a key and he told me to go in and get it for him (this was when we were driving off to our new house, never to return to the house again) so i the minute i opened the door and took a step into the house, i felt a strong force stopping me/like pushing me back in my chest. It was a strong energy, not good at all. i got the keys and ran out. That experience confirmed everything weird and scary i ever experienced in that house to be true. WELL years later my dad told us that he was doing yard work once in that house and he found a cat skull with stuff inside the house, like someone killed it and buried it, but did stuff with the head before burrying it. I also had a dream years later that i went to the house. I walked to the front door and there was a man, and people in the room that usto be my parents ( where i saw the dancing creatures) and they were all sitting on the floor w blk robes, chanting in a different language ( prob worshipping satan). And i went to my old room, and there was all my stuff from when i was a kid, and i hid scared in there and looked at my toys. But i felt as though that dream revealed to me the things that went on in that house and thats the reason i saw those things. I had this dream after i found the lord of course, and prayed to him to reveal to me why i saw those things as a child. I didnt start experiencing the sleep paralysis untill i got older, and ive experienced alot, i just see them as attacks bc i love and beleive in jesus christ. And just one thing is clear everyone, these spirits disguise themselves as family members, and they fear the name of God, so just pray when this happens or pray everynight before u go to sleep and it WONT happen. This has only happened to me when i DONT or FORGET to pray. I am not afraif of these demons, or attacks and i now understand why god allows certain ppl to experience them, he will not give you anything you cant handle just remember that, hes allowed this to happen bc he knows our heart, he knows how strong you are, and also, in a way..hes using these spirits to reveal his testimony. Bc as it is written "Even demons believe.." which is why when u say jesus name, they flee. God Bless and if u have any questions about this or prayer feel free to contact me or write back to me, i will always respond!!

*ciao*
