Sleep Paralysis: Awake But Still Asleep

Hiro Takahashi

A person may wake up and find himself unable to move or speak as if he is frozen. He also may hear footsteps, see a ghost-like creature, or feel someone sitting on his chest. Throughout the history, people considered this phenomenon as work done by evil spirits. However, the modern science can explain the terrifying event as a Sleep Paralysis.

A Sleep Paralysis is possibly a hereditary disorder in which one experiences very frightening seconds or minutes of total body paralysis with little respiration and eye movements (1). A victim in this state feels awake, but he cannot move or speak (2). In addition to the immobility, the common symptoms include feeling choked or suffocated, hearing strange noises like footsteps and voices, seeing beings or dark shadows, and feeling an existance of someone in the room (1). Although these symptoms often direct the victims to believe in ghosts, mistransmission of neural signals in the brain causes Sleep Paralysis. When a person sleeps, his brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contraction (3). If he comes into consciousness before the brain sends signals to activate muscle contraction, he cannot move his body, and consequently, become "paralyzed"(2).

In order to understand how a body becomes paralyzed while the person is awake, it is necessary to understand sleep cycles. In a mammalian sleep, the brain activity undergoes two different states called non-REM (NREM) sleep and REM sleep, which differ very much from wakefulness (3). NREM and REM sleep alternate cyclically through the night; in human, about 80 minutes of NREM sleep starts a night of sleep, about 10 minutes of REM sleep follows, and this 90 minute cycle is repeated about 3 to 6 times during the night (3). During NREM sleep, a body produces few movement, but the body has capability of tossing about in bed and producing some other motor events, such as sleepwalking and sleeptalking (3). The cardiac-muscle contraction and breathing occur at a uniform rate, and the eyes move slowly (2). During REM sleep, on the other hand, heart rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure vary (3). The eyes move rapidly because most dreaming takes place in this period, and the sleeper probably "look" at the moving objects in a dream (2).

The brain's control over muscles during REM sleep points out that in this period, a body is normally in the state of total paralysis, called a "nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis" (3). Probably to prevent a person from "acting out" a dream, the brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contractions (2). Although some peripheral muscles, such as the muscles of the fingers and face, still twitch, the large skeletal muscles become relaxed, or "paralyzed" as a result (3). Some evidence supports that the motor paralysis of REM sleep protect against the acting out of one's dreams. A patient who suffers from rare syndrome called REM Sleep Behavior Disorder lacks the normal nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis, and he acts out violent dreams during REM sleep, often with injurious consequences (4). For example, a 60-year-old surgeon dreamt that he was attacked "by criminals, terrorists, and monsters who always tried to kill [him]" and fighting against them in the nightmare, he was actually punching and kicking his wife who slept in the same bed (4).

A nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis during REM sleep is accomplished actively by postsynaptic inhibition of motorneurons (3). Although the exact process of motor inhibition is not clear, some neurotransmitters and hormones are known to generate the many components of REM sleep. Aministering physostigmine, an inhibitor of the catabolic enzyme, increases the concentration of acetylcholine within the neurons in the pons, making it possible to artificially generate and start REM sleep in the middle of NREM sleep (3). Carbachol, the cholinergic agonist, produces a period of REM sleep in cat when directly injected into the pontine tegmentum (3). The hormone melatonin, a "master hormone" (5) that mainly controls circadian rhythms, also seems to play an important role in enhancing the REM state; the level of melatonin secretion by the pineal gland reaches its lowest during REM sleep (5). Such neurotransmitters and hormones probably activate or inhibit the activity of second messengers, which then activate or inhibit the third messengers, and so on till the last messenger inhibit the synaptic transmission or cause hyperpolarization of the motorneurons. And if, for some reason, the nervous or endocrine system continues to release the neural inhibitors, a person may experience Sleep Paralysis as he enters awakefully into or awakens directly from REM period (2).

While the modern neuroscience can describe the state of Sleep Paralysis as some errors of the neural transmission in the brain during REM sleep, a person who has seen or heard ghost-like figures/voices may easily believe that eveil spirits fully controlled his entire body. However, the images or noises, which the victim believes that he has seen or heard, are most likely hallucinations; and hallucinations, too, can result from the brain activity. In the 1960's, the Canadian neurologist W. Penfield introduced that electrical stimulation of the temporal lobe can cause the auditory hallucinations in the wake state (5). The buzzing or ringing sounds in the ears and other auditory hallucinations are closely associated with the activity of the auditory cortex and involves the temporal lobe (5). During the early period of sleep paralysis, the activity of the temporal lobe increases significantly, sometimes inducing hallucinatory sense (5). Similarly, the visual cortex generates internal visual stimuli, causing the victim to "see" terrifying figures during the paralysis (5).

How an episode of Sleep Paralysis induces visual or auditory hallucinations is still not clear, but it seems to have a significant relationship with anxiety (5). For anxiety is a neurocognitive event closely related to both psychological and physical processes, the extreme anxiety or panic may cause the release of several different signal molecules that trigger all kinds of physical events (5). A person experiencing Sleep Paralysis feels mortal fear or extreme panic, and hence, the brain generates and releases internal visual or auditory stimuli, producing hallucinations.

Also, hallucinations during Sleep Paralysis may happen, for one keeps dreaming even after some parts of his brain wakes up directly from REM sleep. Since the nervous and endocrine systems continue to release the neural inhibitors which sustain the paralysis, it may be possible that those systems keep releasing the neural activators that stimulate dreaming. Thus, a person continues to "see" the images and "hear" the noises produced in the dream that he has just had in REM sleep from which he has awaken.

Understanding more neural concepts of Sleep Paralysis, some researchers now hypothesize that a very rare condition called Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome (SUNDS) may closely relate to Sleep Paralysis (1). Upon the death, a SUNDS victim produces no body movement even though he experiences a myocardial infarction and strong breathing difficulties and should straggle in agony (5). The death may be caused by the extreme muscle atonia during Sleep Paralysis, which is so severe that even the cardiac muscles and the diaghragm paralyze (5).

Until I started researching on this subject, I have believed that the total paralysis of a body is due to an evil taking absolute control over the body. However, the interactions between neurons in the brain can explain this seemingly mysterious phenomenon in a scientific way. Although the explanation is not complete yet, for there are many unclear processes about Sleep Paralysis, the current hypothesis appears to reject the possibility of ghosts on this matter. Of course, it is impossible to completely disprove the existence of "spirits", "minds", or "God" affecting one's behavior. Nevertheless, like Sleep Paralysis and SUNDS, many or the mysterious conditions and behaviors which are only explained in supernatural terms probably result from brain.

I have been trying to figure out what was going on in my sleep untill i read this. Now i am happy to know what my body was expeiencing. It's quite scary your first couple experiences of sleep paralysis but now i'm gonna stay calm when it is happening to me and try to get my own understanding of the experience ... I have had sleep paralyisis at least once per month for the last 8 years. I am 29 as of this writing. I just had the experience about 1 hour ago and thus has caused me to do reasearch about it on the net. I noticed that many Dr.'s contribute this to anxiety, stress and other factors. My question is ... why is there always an evil presence in that concious yet body is still asleep phase? Today I heard a loud static sound, and opened my eyes to a spider crawling all over my arm. When I prayed to God, or said His name (Jehovah) the spider would start to disappear. I finally went thru my mental prayer when I awoke. This leads me to believe that it is more of a spiritual occurence, because I never have positive images while in this paralized state. I know there are many things in which our ancestors thought it was demonic rather than scientific, only to find there was a scientific explanation. However, I think this is different and cannot be simply written off as "scientific". There is not enough proof to show that it is scientific.

About a month ago I had another episode of sleep paralysis and I saw a small presence in the room with me. It was dark, and I could not see it's face (I am getting chills typing about it right now). My question is, why is there always an evil presence not only associated with my episodes, but so many others I have read about? ... Abel, 24 August 2006

i was thinking it is evil who do that during night but now i find out why. I am suffering from sleep paralyze possibly every nigh spicily when i have dinar ... Salah Nasser, 28 January 2007

I used to have this sleeping disorder when I was a child.  It has come back once or twice with adulthood, but otherwise, it is in the past.  I used to, with great effort, move my hand to my face and pull an eye open, which would wake me up, but sometimes the struggle was too much and I would go on into a deeper sleep.

Since the brain can do this to me, can it also cause me to get migraines just as I am about to wake up?

It seems, as I have discovered, if I get less than 4 hours sleep a night, I do not get migraines.  If I get 6 hours or more, it's about a 90% chance I will wake with a migraine.  Later in the day, I get an hour or two nap and that is the routine as it works.  Doctors just sort of treat the migraine and don't get into the sleep thing I have.  I take MaxAult for the migraines when they do get me.

I woke one time, and just as I woke, I felt this white-hot needle going into my head... bingo.  A migraine in 5 seconds.  That is how they can occur.  I wake with them otherwise.  I figure it my brain doing things it shouldn't.  I have a clean bill of health otherwise.

Thanks for your time.  Have a good day ... Jay, 11 February 2007

I have a question, and hope someone out there has an answer, it has been months and I have thus far failed to find one.  Has there ever been a record of anyone receiving the effects of sleep paralysis without having been asleep?  The reason I ask this, is a while ago, having not slept in a few hours, I was sitting at my computer, and it seemed to have happened to me. Within seconds I was too tired to hold up my own head, and my breathing got very difficult. Then I began to feel a sort of dizziness as my limbs lost feeling, and dropped to my side. after this, the dizziness turned to near blindness. I could see, but nothing would focus, and everything I tried to look at seemed to dart around like a mosquito. By this time I had no feeling in my entire body, could move nothing without quite a bit of concentration, and I could barely breath.  My mother heard me try and make out some kind of cry for help, and found me there spilled into my computer chair. She rolled me to my bed, and poured me into it. Within about 10-15 minutes I had regained everything I once had, but my sea legs did not ware off for another ten or so minutes.  I went to the emergency soon after. I had an E.K.G. and a C.A.T. scan, with no results, and I piss less in a week then the amount of blood they took that night. After basically telling me I was lying, the doctor told me that my symptoms did not fit anything at all.  What I do know, is I have been researching the issue ever since, and can only base my problem on Sleep Paralysis. All the symptoms match. And again, my question....Has there ever been a record of someone under the effects of sleep paralysis without ever having gone to sleep?  I hope you can shed some sort of light on this subject, as it,...well, it freaked me the hell out, and no one has been able to answer me!  Thank you for your time ... I used get this "evil paralysed me" feeling when i was paralysed and usually saw a ghost. i tried to shout or move but no sound escaped my mouth and couldn't move at all. it happened again yesterday and was almost convinced that ghosts/evil spirits were getting the better of me. But, me being a practical and logical guy, erjected this theory and started researching on this phenomenon. I came across this research paper on Sleep Paralysis. This greatly helped me in alleviating my fears. And next time i "see" a ghost during sleep paralyses, ill just laugh at it ;-)  Thanks for the research ... Siddarth, 10 December 2007

Scariest episode ever.......

I have been going thru A LOT in the past month from losing my older brother suddenly to miscarrying my baby and many other things in between. So with that being said I have been losing a lot of faith in God, Jesus etc not sleeping properly. With that being said I have had times were I have been asleep and felt a paralized feeling, cant move my arms legs cant talk NOTHING. But last night was absolutly TERRIFYING.

Again my faith in anything superior is wearing VERY thin and my first "dream" last night I was awoke my a woman and a man laying on top of me, holding me down. I couldnt talk move or anything and I swear the female was saying things like GOOD BYE. I awoke at about 4am and called my fiance bc i was scared out of my mind.
He told me maybe it was an angel and demon fighting over me or something like that. Thats kind of what it felt like a little.

The next time I awoke it was to someone spooning me, poking me in the back of my back calling MY NAME, i kept asking this person who are you what do you want. No answer just poking me calling my name saying I know you hear me, I was trying to ignore it, I was UP my eyes were open I just could NOT move. That happened at about 6am. I was afraid to go back to sleep.

I appreciate hearing others stories it makes me feel like I am not alone out there BUT how do we STOP this from happening? Im so scared I feel like im losing my mind.

Re:Scariest episode ever.....

I am sorry to hear about your problems. Many times, going through such loses will cause you a lack of sleep. As a christian,I know that sometimes the pain will cause your faith to get weary.Even though this is kind of off topic,I would encourage you to keep the faith and pray.God will make a way for you.I know that you are depressed. There are medicines on the market that will help you sleep better. Also, you are not loosing your mind.:-)This is a common problem faced by a countless number of people. Some Sp experiences are spiritually based so I wont say that all sp experiences are scientific. But the most important thing is not to fear it.Just pray and relax and let God handle the problem.May God bless you and keep you.Take care

I'm sorry that I did not have the information that you are looking for you.:-(

I really do appreciate your

I really do appreciate your reply, to be honest ever since that happened I have truly been getting my faith back in God. Talking to people BEFORE this episode even happened people would tell me please dont lose your faith, get it back, please stop talking like that etc. And then THIS happened, it kind of opened my eyes A LOT that God is trying to tell me something. I have been getting back into praying but this time I am doing it together with my fiance out loud and it feels GREAT!!! I truly have been feeling better daily sooooooo HOPEFULLY i dont encounter these episodes any more BUT should I be so lucky I know I have God on my side there to help and protect me. :)

Yes he IS trying to tell you something!

I kept getting terrible, horrible, just the ugliest scenes placed in front of me time and time again, each "dream" becoming more brutal and horrific than the last. I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT-- the "spirits" were telling me "Jeez, you don't GET IT YET?" they kept on and on. At first I thought the beings were malignant, as they gave that impression with their visions given to me. It was a warning of things to come, to the earth, very plainly. Now, the nightmares stopped, because I took heed of hte message. Now I miss my "friends" and wish they would come back. But I always have that fear, because angels are supposed to instill fear at first

First of all praise the Lord.

First of all praise the Lord. I had a sp experience just tonight. I believe, that while there may be physical causes, we are spirituaul beings as well. Hearing that your faith in the Father had been reignited had truly been a blessing to me. Thank you for sharing your story. May God bless you, myself and all others who came here seeking answers.

First Time..

I am 14 years old and this mornig at 4. O Clock. I thought I was Asleep when my eyes suddenly opend and my body was shaking terribly. I was scared out of my mind and tried to yell for my grandparents but I couldnt. I also had a really bad time trying to breath. after about 10 seconds I saw my arms go up and then very slowly my body sat up. but I had no idea how I was doing it. But this mornig my grandfather told me he did the same thing when he was young, And the way he would controle it is by sleeping on your LEFT SIDE. He also told me it was probly caused by a nightmare I was having.

Sleep P.

I am 19 and I agree with anyone that says to pray to God. I awhile ago I was sleeping and I woke up but couldn't move my body but I knew what was going on. It was around 8 a.m. so it was light in the room, I thought my mom was in the house, because I kept hearing footsteps coming up the stairs and other noises I can't explain. Then it seemed like someone was putting their hands in my face and laughing. So I prayed and prayed and asked God to give me my strength and release me from whatever that was trying to restrain me. While I was praying it seemed as though everything was shaking and then I regained everything and I got up. I walk down stairs and found out that I was home alone again. It seems to happen a lot when I am alone and decide to go to sleep, but I am not scared because I know that God will help me and deliver me from all evil.

sleep paralysis is very

sleep paralysis is very terrifying for me. especially when i was 9 years old. i honestly believe that its not your mind playing tricks on you, and that this is actually happening. it is to vivid and reall to just say that your hallucinating. no one really know how sleep paralysis feel untill they experience the horror for themselves.

Weird and not wonderful....

Record of my episode of "Sleep Paralysis" that occurred 30 min ago..if i dont write it down, ill forget the small details as my memory tends to dissipate fast - found this thread so here goes.

Ive suffered from panic attacks (night terrors) for many years im 42 now...Ive also had many small episodes where ive woken up before my brain has and lay there not knowing where i am or who i am..total confusion as this can last a minute. This used to worry me before i researched and had a learned friend tell me its caused by disruption to REM sleep and one part sometimes wakes before the other can catch up.

This was different to those..this was terrifying..ive been overtired last few days/week(had blood tests taken today because of the severity) ..and today just couldnt function with an overwhelming tiredness so at 1pm took a nap. I woke up 20 min or so later feeling worst and so closed my eyes again and went back to sleep...I woke a short time later..i was fully concious but it took all my strength to open my eyes ...id open them enough to see my room and then theyd close again i felt drugged and unable to move..i just kept battling to open my eyes..which again and again they "would " but only had enough strength for 3 seconds at a time. This scared me as i KNEW i was awake..the more scared i got the more i tried to BE awake...the most terrifying thing was i tried several times to sit up , the furthest i got was perhaps 10cm BUT i could see my shoulder back on the pillow..i tried to turn my head to see my face - i knew it would be on the pillow. Couldnt do it... i also was aware of someone standing in the room to the right but coudlnt focus on it before i was pulled back under and also VERY disinctly kept hearing a woman behind me talking...i even made out the words.."when she wakes up"....i wish i could recall what else she said...she was talking to the other figure who i knew i would see if i could keep my eyes open....this felt like a half hour of this..i knew i had to wake myself up but all i could do was manage a voice in my head to start shouting repetatively..wake UP wake UP..just kept chanting that and then woke up "normal" ....

Omg....I can't believe this

Omg....I can't believe this happens to alot of people.I thought. I was crazy. I just had an "episode" my self....I have been experiencing these episodes since I was a child. I'm 23 now. They don't come often. Maybe every few months or so but I'm telling you when I do have them THEY ARE TERRIFYING! I don't know if something or someone is trying to get me or tell me something or wat but....I don't like it. I feel crazy and I want it to stop. When I am having an episode it seems like I can't move or speak. Its hard to breath. I can only see wats in front of me. I can hear wats going on in the room but I also hear whispering or laughing. Every time it happens it seems like a lady is doing it to me. Tonight it felt like someone grabbed me and sat on top of me. And I could not move. I couldn't speak. I felt weak. Then I finally got a little strength to let out a small cry. I kept doing it and kept doing it until whatever was sitting on me seemed to go away. Then I heard my fiance trying to calm me. He said I was screaming in my sleep. But my eyes were open the whole time. It doesn't seem like I woke up because my eyes never closed. Is there someone we can see for this?

sleep paralysis

WOW the same exact thing happened to me at 13 and contiues to occur to me now for 10 yrs. I'm not completely sleep yet and all of a sudden I can't move, speak, or even breath like something is taking complete control over my entire body. The only thing that stops it is if I try and force a leg or arm to move. When it stops it usually will occur like 4 or 5 times right after that. Its crazy because most of the time someone is right next to me and I am trying to scream help but nothing comes out. It seems like you are having the same effects as me cause my eyes are open the whole time. I am not sure what to say but I do strongly believe it is still a case of sleep paralysis. Stay strong with me :)

I had the same exact stuff

I had the same exact stuff happen to me. But can you please explain this. I woke up and i went to the middle of all the bedrooms . Then the bathroom door was open so I looked and right there their was a dark figure and I could feel a cold breeze at my feet. Plz explain this I have yet to figure it out

Omg! I thought I was alone

Omg! I thought I was alone having these dreams or should I say out of body experiences. I recently just had an experience, but this time it wasn't usual that I normally have. This time it felt like something entering me, and I saw something. Past experience I would just feel myself falling into a really strong deepness trying to wake myself up. I would to me be screaming and shouting!...but to the eye I would be sleep and nobody has no idea what is going on. It has happened to me a lot! Usual when I try explaining it to people they wouldn't understand or would look at me as if I'm crazy, so it defiantly feels good to see that I'm not alone! ...as I was saying usually it would just be me trying to wake up or stop myself from falling into the deepness. This time it was fear of something negative!...I mean everytime it happens there is always this fear, but this particular time I could see where the fear was coming from...it was this dark shadow watching over me & my body got cold. I felt like it was no escaping this one!... I almost felt like my body or my inner man was about to go elsewhere......but my bf finally!!!!! Touched me and ended this awful feeling!
Thought I should share, Ryan.

thank you so's picture

sleep paralysis

I'm 15 years old and since 2 years ago I began having this too. But I don't see strange things. When this happens to me, the last sound I heard from when i woke up starts repeating itsef backwards an forward iin a very fast pace.
I once woke up and i heard a cat and a motorcycle, so those two sounds kind of mixed and began replaying themselves faster and faster, and louder and louder. It became a terrifying sound. I thought I was becoming crazy. Usually when this happens to me after 1-2 minutes I can move again, but if i don't take that chance like within 10 seconds I'm paralyzed again. So the moment I CAN move i HAVE to move. When I'm paralyzed I always try to fight against it because it's really scary not to be able to move your own body. I can move a bit of my body, like my arm about 1-2 inches from its place, but it takes alot of concentration. I can move my eyes but that's all. When it happens to me I'm always scared to sleep because it might happen again when I wake up. I'm glad i decided to look it up, and to see that i'm not the only one. I really thought some evil spirit was mad at me or something. I haven't told my mother about this because i don't know what she will think of me.

My Knowledge

Hello Im 19 and ive had sleep paralysis since i can't remember....every eppisodes i have i experience a seperation of body and [?]...when i have the chance i tend to analize what is happening, when it happenes, it always starts by a wierd sensation of the body, then i experience this preassure and sounds...then i am spiritually awake in my bed..sometimes when i can control myself i find myself walking in my room....ive wondered...if i could conduct an experiment involving two persons asleep in one room...sharing the same experience at the same time...ive wondered if interaction is possible.....My email is ...just in case there has been studies like this...or etc...peace and love..

I don't know half the terms here, but I now have general idea of what's going on with me. I recently had a dream where I was laying on the ground back at my house petting my cat, and I could feel his fur, then it shifted to me get hit in the face with a pillow by one of my friends, which I could feel the softness of the pillow, which woke me up, mentally.

Before I couldn't even open my eyes, but this time I opened them and it felt like my dream world and reality were colliding. My eyes wouldn't stop shaking, things appeared in and out of the room (mind you this was during the afternoon, like most must sleep paralysis and lucid dreams) so i ended up closing my eyes again. There was more but those stood out th most.

I understood what was happening, I've looked it into before when I had it the first couple times and didn't understand it then(I was like 12, now I'm 21) I've had the same expriences like these other folk (I thought it was aliens, made me paranoid) but neve had a dream or paralysis that lucid or odd. I wonder if it's getting worse.

Hello all. I just want to

Hello all. I just want to tell you all that it is normal to feel crazy. I am 30 years old, a professional in the world, a realist and by no means a nut case. But I have been dealing with what is called “hagging” or “psychic attacks” for the past 15 years. All I have to say is that the scientific explanation for this is bull, but if it makes you sleep better at night, then im all for that. I have seen numerous doctors from neurologist to sleep apnea specialist to psychotherapist, and none of them work. I have undergone many treatments for this. Highschool was especially difficult since I would only get 3 hours of sleep a night.

My attacks used to be severe, I used to wake up with scratch and bite marks all over me. I am a spiritual person. I believe in a higher power, but at no means am I person who believes in hauntings, fairies, werewolves or vampires.

What I noticed is that there is no explanation why or when these attacks happen, but they do increase when there is stress or sadness in my life.

Take this as you want, but I have learned to fight them off. I say “them” since I do not know what it is. During an attack I have seen many things or beings, what you want to call them, for which at first, they scared the living daylights out of me, but now, they do not. These things feed of fear and bad energy.

When you are having an attack, do not panic, do not kick and scream and do not fear them. They cannot hurt you. They only drain your energy, life source (again, its whatever you want to call it, its up for your own interpretation).

You are not crazy and science does not explain it all. These things are real and they occur to normal people. If you wish to have a further discussion, please feel free to email me, personally, I’ve don’t extensive research on this, I have even consulted many “alternative” doctors who have given me many tools on how to maneuver these attacks. I write this today, after being attacked last night, for about 2 hours. I do not know why last night was so violent, but it was. Could be because of Hallows Eve, or whatever it was. But last night was particularly disturbing because it was various attacks, various entities and my boyfriend ended up getting scratched. Since they do not have the power over me, they ended up attacking my loved one. This is just a new chapter in my attacks.

Again, if you need to talk or need some more information, I am here for you. My email address is: . And sorry, if my comment is all over the place, its just alot of information and im trying to get it out quickly. But i have 15 years of experience with these things.

Thank you for reading.

Need sleep :(

I would love to believe that my attacks are explained by sleep paralysis, but it is hard to believe. I have been suffering from these strange attacks since after the birth of my daughter, who is nearly five. My first one was an outer body experience, where i watched myself walk into my babies bedroom to check on her, but never actually did....After this, I had several more outer body experiences. Now for the last 3 years I have had the paralyzed feeling, cant move for the life of me, hear weird noises, usually a loud noise or a hummingbird noise. I had a male roomate a few yrs ago, had one that scared me so bad I went and slept in his bed, mind you I was 25 at the time.... I am now 28 and it is 430 in the morning and im scared to go back to sleep, I just want this to go away, and at this point I believe Im going to have to learn to deal with it :(

and I cant yell out or do anything but I know I'm awake
the other times it happened I felt like the room was spinning
really fast and I was falling but paralyzed
I'm so scared when it happens
it happened tonight, that's how I found this page, I need an answer
and this seems to be what I might have :( I'm terrified to go to sleep again cuz
sometimes it happens over and over again

My grandfather said it is

My grandfather said it is caused by nightmares (sometimes) and the more you have them the more you can tell when your going to have them and then you can prepare youself. by sleeping on your LEFT side. I dont know but he said that would help it. or have someone with you to wake you up. orr you have to learn to throw yourself off your bed. that how I do it. by throwing yourself iff it wakes your brain up and tells it to stop.

Don't worry!

Don't worry!I know exactly what you are going through. There are many kinds of sp expieriences. The ones that seem to scare people most are the ones that includes evil presenses.I have expierienced evil presenses when I was younger and I know how it feels to be helpless. There are several ways to overcome this problem. For me I am a christian and I know that Jesus will protect me from any evil presence that comes my way.I would first suggest you pray God and let Him take care of the problem. Also, try to have you're parents take you to the doctor. The doctor may be able to prescribe a medication that will help you sleep better. Also try to do something relaxing before you go to sleep, like listening to music or reading a book. Also try sleeping in some light.Try not to be frightened of the situation.Try to pray mentally the next time you go through this and I gurantee that you will be free of you're sleep paralysis.God bless and take care!

Last night between two and

Last night between two and three a.m. I experienced this what they call sleep paralysis. It by far was the worst feeling I have ever felt. It has happen to me before and many others which whom I have talked to. I always believed it to be evil spirits and still am not ready to rule it out completely. I have an open mind and believe that science could be what is initianally causing me to enter this state. I know this may sound crazy but i also still believe that these hallucinations may in fact be evil spirits. Just as others have questioned why are these hallucinations always evil or negative, I as well wonder. I almost feel as though these spirits are aware that our bodies have entered this imobile state and that is when we are most vunerable. I feel this way because this particular experience last night was so real. I know it initianally was a dream because it happened in a on my living room couch but I was sleeping in my bed when i woke up. Unlike the times before when this happened I saw a little girl my chest felt heavy and I couldn't move or speak. I too tryed to pray because it seemed to allow me to wake up last time this happened but this time it didn't. Eventually I was able to move my hands and fight with this little girl to get off of me and I physically felt her crabbing my hands and fighting me back. It was so real I can still remember exactly how her hand felt. During the struggle I then entered a state of mind where a flood of my child hood memories raced through my head I felt as if they were being drawn out of me. The spirit was taking a part of my soul it seems. Then i came back to the state of struggleing with her and I thought to myself you can do this you can fight this don't let her take these away from you and then finally I was able to open one eye and I still saw this girl clear as day as she retracted from me. I sat up and didn't know where I was. I walked down stairs and my home was no longer my home. I was lost. I went to the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror and I didn't even know who I was. I then lost it and immediately entered into a panic attack. I lost strength in my whole body and I was awake! I weakly walked into the hall and stared at my roomates door trying to figure out what was behind it still not knowing where i was and all of a sudden as I struggled to remember I called out my roomates name still going through one of the worst panic attacks I have ever had. I was covered in sweat and could barely breath. After I calmed down I couldn't go back to sleep I was still so terrified I went downstairs and watched t.v. I sat in the exact place where the struggle in my dream had happen and after a few hours I felt my eyes getting heavier than normal almost as if I couldn't control them from closing and I felt her presence again. I felt like I was being drawn back to this weak state all the while I was awake. Finally I fought again said No I won't let you do this and sat up. Today I feel weaker than normal and my chest still feels as if there are a ton of bricks on it. The worst part is I still feel out of place. I really do feel like a part of me was taken away this time, like Im lost. Everytime I think about it I cry because I truely believe this spirit took something away from me last night.

Feeling like you lost some of yourself..

I am here reading, because this happens to me. Used to happen a lot, but haven't had one in a long while.

Anyway, this "thick as a brick" feeling you have is not usual for these experiences and you are so young. I have had this feeling but not due to this event, I went to the doctor and told him about it, and i used the exact words "thick as a brick" and I'm an engineer, so the mind is usually very sharp. He sent me for an EKG and said he saw a little something but had no base to compare it to, so if it happens again I should tell him. It didn't.

The latent feeling of pressure on your chest is not good either.

I think you should get a check-up at your doctor.

I know how you feel.I'm about 2 years older than you and I use to experience this.I am a christian and personally I would first and farmost suggest praying to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For me, I use to experience evil presenses.I was about years old when I first had my experience.A lot of people offer very good advice on how to deal with it.Some of the things I do is:
Pray
Read the bible/book
Sleep with the light on
Don't drink anything with caffeine
listen to music
I would also suggest asking your mom to take you to the doctor. There are Some medicines that can help you sleep better. If you suffer from evil presenses,I would strongly suggest you to pray.God will protect you from any evil presense.I hope this help you my friend:-)

I may not Know what you feel

I don't mean to insult your faith or anything because I am a Christian. I don't believe that any of the religions out there today are correct. I believe in science and I also believe in the "supernatural" or "paranormal" that science does not explain. This I feel is something that science explains, but I also believe in demons (which I believe is actually explained by dark energy and matter that is out their in the universe. Dark energy would be hell and demons because dark energy tries to pull the universe back together or in other words to collapse it. Dark matter pushes the universe apart as if God is trying to promote growth throughout his kingdom so the dark matter would be heaven so it's entirely plausible that God is that darkness known as Dark matter [even in the bible God is known as the darkness, but Hell is described as a different darkness])

Dark matter and Dark energy does not clump like the matter that we can physically touch and feel, it is instead spread out evenly throughout the universe.

I've driven myself a little off topic but I think what is above gives a little context to my theories on sleep paralysis.

I believe that demons are in play when concerning sleep paralysis. I realize that the brain is incredibly complex and could probably easily confuse signals to create the effect of demonic presence but I believe that demons cause the brain to have this lapse.

Do not be afraid when this happens, demons feed off of fear. Stay strong, but also remove yourself from its presence. You should stay safe, as long as you believe that the creator of our universe has not intended for demons to take control of you. Harm will no come to you as long as you take proper measures, if the problem persists then I would suggest bringing a psychic medium into your house to sense what is their but also going to a psychiatrist to see if mentally something has happened which would invite demons into your home. Do not fear the unknown, fear those who have absolute power.

I see where you are coming from

I see where you are coming from and I respect it.As a teenager,I also use to believe in some forms of science, but as I got older and became a christian,I did not look at science the same.Sure, science use to be my favorite subject in school(although I still like to learn about weather, animals and insects),but when I got to middle school,I saw science through a whole new set of eyes.Evolution questions me the most.To me,the whole "man from ape"thing is really going out proportions.I'm not insulting your belief in science or anything, but I really try to avoid Evolution and the "the big bang theory"as possible.I really think that we can learn a lot from each other.Thank you for your suggestions.Do you like learning about weather? How about Insects? This is the form of science I like learning about.By the way,my name is Antwan.

Hope to hear from you.

Anxiety and SP

I'm a 34 year old female with a history of anxiety and panic attacks although through therapy and self discovery, I have learned how to control my anxiety and haven't had many problems with it in years. Panic attacks and anxiety for me come at a time of mental and emotional and even physical change. I'm going through work related stressors and relationship changes. For a couple of weeks, I have been dealing with feeling like there is a physical being or ghost in my presence at night. I've never had trouble sleeping before. I'd eventually fall asleep and forget about it. Ive also been struggling with a major feeling of suffocation when I lay down, scared that I might not wake. Last night was the first time I had ever experieced being woken up by a force that felt so real, not like a dream.... i'm a pretty logical realist, so the explanation of just a chemical problem stimulating from stress makes total sense to me, but when this happens to you and you are woken by something sitting on your shoulder and pulling the covers tight... it doesn't feel like a dream. Its a horrific feeling, and it does feel dark. I'm an extremely spiritual person. It feels evil. I do have a lot going on and I totally recognize this. So, I'm praying that this is just a chemical imbalance. I pray what I had happen to me last night, doesn't happen again. I'm sorry for you guys who have this occur often.

RE: Anxiety and SP

im 17 years old and ive had this sleep paralysis for years and i never knew what it was until my friends were talking about this person that they thought was crazy cause that person was having all these symptoms and claimed it was ghosts and so forth and I was so shocked cause i always thought it was just me and i thought it was normal or just me but actually, everyone thinks your crazy if you have it. Ive tried numerous amount of things to bypass the situation when it occurs. I try to humm really as loud as i can , even tho its not tht loud. and i try to pray but tht doesnt work as well,..i try saying to my self, alright here it comes again just fck it and lets get it over with,...and most of the time thts how i feel,..just get it over with. but the horrific feeling never changes. there will never ever be a more scare to me than these episodes i get at night. there is nothing more scary. and the loud ringing and spinning,...ugh,...its like a demon is torturing you and suffocating you with something and rapidly breathing like nothing youve ever seen,... but i have seen shadows and ghost like figures lurking around me but i close my eyes shut and im glad to kno for the most part that their just hallucinations and stuff. i get these episodes very often,, about 2-5 times a week. average of 3. so im always experiencing it and it never changes,..i hope there can be some solution to this cause ive been having these for a really long time and i dont wanna keep having them as i grow up

bella's picture

its the worse feeling ever

At least now you know you're not alone. You're not going crazy. I can make a suggestion. Find some that comforts you when you are awake, a pet, photo etc. and sleep with it next to you. Also it rarely happens if you leave a light on. If you can sleep with a lamp or tv on then it will help. Mine started when I was 8, but never understood and rarely talked about it. 23 years later it's still happening. There's only 4 people as of today that know about it. 2 ex's my mother and now my current significant other. Hope this helps good luck

nightly attacks

I feel for you. I have had many sleep studies and chemical testing to check my "nightly terrors" and they never pan out. I am a 30 year old professional, who, like you, is a reaslist and doesn't believe in witches or vampires, but i am spiritual. I have found that these things are real, and that science cannot explain it. I have fought them back when i have these episodes, and have had mixed results. I used to get scrached and bruised alot, when i was younger, by these beings, but now, i dont give them the strenght to do it.

Like anything, they are only as strong and you let them be. Have faith, when you feel these spirits taunting you, pray, relax, say "our father: prayer, and fight them, try to wake up. Keep your faith strong. Dont get scared, once you start fighting back, it will get scary, but remember, if those things exist, then God and angels exist as well.

I have been dealing with these things for 15 years now, and now i can say i do NOT give them power over me. The attacks do seem to come more when something is not going right in life. They feed of bad energy.

Keep strong.

It happened again

Hi, I experience this paralysis rarely but it happened again today. I wake up and can't move, but I don't feel an entity around me that wishes me harm. I do however feel the urge to stop at nothing to move as if my life depends on it for some reason. The experience without the evil ghost is still scary nonetheless. I notice that people say you shouldn't sleep on your back, but one of my earliest episodes I remember being face first into my pillow blocking my way to breath and it terrified me greatly. I always sleep on my back now and only experience these episodes around 15 times in the past 4 years. This has been the first time I have looked up what has been happening to me, and now I fear that I just made myself aware that there will be an evil entity next time and I might experience more now. After reading this I am thankful that I haven't had experiences like what most people do with the noises and the evil ghost.

Sleep Paralysis

Hi! My name is Nabeel Qureshi and I'm 27 years old.
Wow. so many people are facing the same thing I thought I was the only one.
It started with me 1st time when I was 13 in 1998 when I was in 8th Grade. My father beat me at that night because I got B Grade instead of an A. Anyway I went to sleep and it happens it scared the shit out of me. I saw light in the sky like angels are coming to take me away. I was not afraid of death but I was scared. I prayed to Allah that forgive me if I've done anything wrong and then they disappeared.
2nd time it was in 2008 before Xmas. I saw an evil dark and ugly shadow trying to get inside me then I started reciting Holy Quran then it disappeared. then again after a month and I felt presence of someone outside my door doing some voodoo stuff on me. I went to Hospital and there was a lady doctor and she did every test she could like e.c.g, x-ray, blood sugar, B.p and whole lot of alphabets and then said are you on crack? I said excuse me?
Now I forgot the counting it used to happen once in a month now its happening everyday. I'm writing this because I just experienced one one hour ago and it made me do research on net. I saw that my spirit is going away from my body like transparent plasma. i wasn't breathing and I had a heavy stone on my heart. it was so intense this time the static sound was more loud and I thought this is it my time has come and I was just letting it takeover me because I had no strength left in me to fight it then I realized that after my dad past away I'm the only one to take care of my mom and little sis. so I tried and just my leg moved so rapidly like I kicked a football and it hit the bed with a loud noise in 4 in the morning. my mum waked up because of the noise and came in my room and she found me very very cold. one thing I forgot to mention that I did not prayed this time or recite holy Quran and it was not going away as soon as I said God help me then my leg moved. I don't know this phenomena its killing me.
I went to seven or may be 10 highly qualified and experienced doctors from U.S and London and In Pakistan but no one knows what my problem is. my blood tests result was perfect my e.c.g came perfect, little high b.p some times and cholesterol was 25 which was not good it should be under 200. its understandable as I wasn't doing any exercise due to work.
Only one Doctor in Pakistan understood my case. He was Neuro Specialist. he said it was due to unconscious stress you are taking after your father's death and you were always a worrier. and that unknown stress I'm taking its effecting my digestion, Heart beat, Blood Pressure and sleep. He gave me Alprazonam 0.5mg and prescribed me some other acidity and gastric Ulcer med. after that it did not happen for 2 months. it means it worked but due to that 0.5mg tablet I was becoming dull in my daily life as I'm always a bright and intellectual person and it stoped working after I completed a month's course. then I started taking 1mg without asking the doctor it helped for few days but in vein again I was felling lazy and sleepy all the time. my friend told me its a drug it will destroy your healthy life and you will become an addict and start raising its potency by time and one day even 10 or may be 25mg wont work which is given to mental patients it scared me so I left taking any medicines and start improving my diet. but its comeback again after few days of peace. now my head is heavy all the time and I'm scared what if it might happen while I'm driving a car or riding my sports bike? it would be a disaster and I might hurt someone. so I don't drive alone now. always take my friend or cousin with me in case if something happens.
One mystery is why it disappears when I pray otherwise it don't go? I do strongly believe in God that we just did not come from no where or our ancestors were bacteria its childish for me. I believe that after God we Humans are the Super Power and the Crown of Creation as God said him self in many place in Quran that" I put my spirit in Humans and asked angels to bow down before Adam. and I gave humans a wonderful mind to do good deeds and research this universe as I made this for Humans so search for the truth and get education. and there is no disease on earth he made that have no cure. we just had too look for it in the right place. and he wont let us discover knowledge any knowledge until he wants to". (its a summary not the actual translation word by word as I only remember the moral)
can anyone tell me the solution please? its making me to wake up every night with chest pain heavy head and look for answers in Google

Sleep Paralysis

I have been having this sleep disorder for years. During the episode of the attack, we believe we are dying and that's where the evil presence comes in. Our minds conjure up the spirit of death because we truly believe that we are dying.

Solution - Call on Jesus! Start reading the Holy bible and invite jesus to live in you heart. I'm happy to hear that you pray to God. Now you need to accept His Son Jesus.
The conditon becomes bearable when during the episode, you call Jesus's name. Your whole life will change. This condition is scientific and is related to stress and exhaustion. Jesus can give you the joy and peace that you need to get you through the attack and through life in general. Once His Holy Spirit dwells in you, and you began to trust in Him, you can achieve victory over all things! If you need help with getting started with the bible feel free to contact me.

Sleep paralysis

Hi , I have had some scary moments waking up suddenly and frightened as my eyes open and I cannot move or speak. And it does feel like something evil is in the room . At times I felt as though someone was ripping the blankets of me couldnt see the person but felt it. The good news is this paralyzed state doesnt last for long and it has hapened to me so many times I know to simply wait 30 seconds and it will go away. However when these paralytic states hapen as soon as I fall asleep again I wake up frantic in a paralized state again and again all in one night , this has also hapened to me in the day while trying to take a nap. The good news is I have noticed it a trend so I can anticipate or try to eliminate the precipitating factor. It always happens when I am overlwhelmed with stress from school/life or extreme emotional sadness.

Glad to know i'm not the only one

A similar event happened to me recently. I remember being really really tired when I first fell asleep, I was in mid dream when I all of sudden woke up I didn't open my eyes though, I felt a figure lying next me and could hear them breathing. I thought it was my boyfriend at first, then shortly after remembered that he didn't stay that night. I reached out to see, but I couldn't move at all. I then felt like the pressure feeling on my chest like a few people did, but it almost felt like something was getting sucked out of my chest, such a strong feeling that I couldn't control. Once that was over I could move again. My chest was so hot but everything else was cold. I turned my lights on and my vision was very bury. This experience has left frightened to ever go back to sleep in my room.

I don't really believen all the spiritual things or demons, evils etc. but now i'm starting to think maybe it was, or is it just sleep paralysis? I would really like to know.

I have these episodes about

I have these episodes about twice a week and they always involve demonic laughters. I have gotten so used to it that I either try cursing during the state or just laugh with them.. I know its SP but your mind can come up with some crazy shit.. It always happens when I am laying flat on my back but laying on my sides it never happens. So turn sideways and see if that helps.

Hey :) I'm 16, and I'm sorry

Hey :) I'm 16, and I'm sorry to hear your frightening experience. I've been experiencing it on and off for about a year now. It has often been reported when people stay round other houses (as you did). I know how you must be feeling right now, if it happens again, just remind yourself you're pretty much dreaming and you will wake up soon, try to make it fun. Hopefully it won't happen again... Sleep paralysis often includes frightening hallucinations (which you saw) so again, don't worry, its just your brain creating its own visual stimulus. Research it a bit more on the internet- you could find some useful information :)

sleep paralysis or lucid dream?'s picture

my alarm went off this

my alarm went off this morning then i fell back asleep, and woke up again- at least i thought i did
my whole body was paralysed. i tried to get up numerous times but couldn't
i started hearing this strange rhythm, like the beat of a drum or something, then it sounded like music was coming from my window- i could remember the song when i snapped out of it but i've completely forgotten it now
i tried going back to sleep, but the rhythm got louder
so i started to reach for my phone, i could see it in my peripheral vision but when i tried to pick it up and bring it into my central vision, it disappeared.
i tried to yell, but i think strange moans came out
then i received a text message and immediately woke up completely, in the exact same position i was in when all of this was happening
i remembered learning about sleep paralysis in psychology so i decided to look it up, and am really curious as to whether this would have been sleep paralysis or just a lucid dream, which i used to have quite frequently, but nothing like this! it was a really frightening experience.

eyes wide open

this was a bad time in my life-divorce, deaths in family, old dogs put to sleep, etc. i'm sure i was anxious and depressed, but there was a glimmer of joy from a 5-month old weim/lab puppy i'd had for a couple of weeks. he was a big boy, about 65 pounds.

i'm a huge insomniac and went to bed around 3 am to rest my eyes before i had to get up at 6 for work. i've been afraid of the dark and monsters all my life and always sleep with a lot of light-the bathroom door half open or the hall light on-and i can see the room clearly.

i was laying there, AWAKE, and i felt the side of the bed depress, as if someone sat down on the edge. i thought, "must be the dog jumping up" and looked in that direction, but he was sound asleep at the foot of the bed. i settled back in, thinking "must be your imagina..."!!!

POW!! just then, something pounced on my chest and held my shoulders and arms down, like in a wrestling pin. this thing was SO strong, SO powerful..it could have torn me in half! this was not a friendly visit. it held me like a vise! but i didn't see anything, couldn't move or scream. i leave the sheet loose at the bottom of the bed and was finally able to kick like all hell!

i shot out of the room! the dog looked at me like i was a crazy person. i was terrified, but not as scared as i thought i would be, finally meeting a real monster!

i don't believe it was a dream or a hallucination. why can't there be species that exist that we humans can't see with our limited vision? maybe there ARE parellel or overlapping universes. mom, maybe those monsters having a tea party in my closet 50 years ago WERE real!

in conclusion, it's been 10 years since my only "sp" experience and i still sleep on the couch!

good luck all!

im 16 years old and i just

im 16 years old and i just had one of these nightmares. it was so scary! i was lying in bed and then suddenly i heard this extremely loud and high pitched noise - so loud and high that my ears felt like they were burning! I thought it was an earthquake... (because a few nights ago we had a small earthquake), so i tried to jump off my bed, but i was paralyzed. it was so scary! i felt like my mouth was stuck wide open, and all my muscles were extremely tense, and i was trying to move my foot and hands to get up but i couldnt, no matter how hard i tried. and i was trying to yell for help but couldnt... after around 20 seconds i woke up and i felt extremely puffed out. This happened at around 12:00am, and its around 4:00am now...but ive been too scared to go back to sleep. I wonder if there is anything i can do to prehaps make the experience less scary (maybe some things to think about) or any techniques used to minimize the likelyhood of SP happening again tonight...

Does anyone sleep under a

Does anyone sleep under a beam - ie. is their bed positioned under a beam or a slanting roof... reading about feng shui lately and it talks about how the energy of houses/environment actually interacts with our very being - both of these things apparently create a pushing/supressing pressure on us... could be BS but I do, so wondered if it may correlate?
