Post-Project Reflections

I really enjoyed the presentations! I thought that they were all interesting in that they made me think about things I had never thought about before. I especially enjoyed Ayesha's presentation about Muslims at Bryn Mawr, because even though there is currently so much backlash against the Muslim community worldwide, it doesn't really seem like a pressing issue to the Bryn Mawr community (which it definitely should be). I don't think there are many mediums through which muslims can express their opinions about current events, and her anecdote about the muslim girl who was asked pointed questions was shocking to me. While race seems to be a prominent issue that is continuously addressed at Bryn Mawr, religion seems more taboo.

Post Project Thoughts

These past few weeks have been an interesting experience. As someone who loves working in the dining hall, it is weird to think about the implications of my working there. I knew going in about the pay discrepancy, but I didn't start paying attention to the way that my peers and I at the dining halls were treated until starting my research. Classism is subtle and many people don't know that they say certain things and treat people in a way that is rude. I think the next steps going forward would be to share finding with the student body at Bryn Mawr as a whole so that there will be  a conversation going on about dining hall workers and the pay discrepancy. Not only this but I feel as if my research has helped people be more cognizant when they go to the dining hall.

This course is titled “Changing Our Story” and through different tasks, I have come to recognize the impact students-anyone- can have if effort is put forth. For my project, Hannah and I closely studied what influences can have an affect on a learning environment. Of course, we must consider that every unique classroom setting can produce different results, however personally I have become more educated on what teaching styles suit me more. I took the opportunity to study class structure, class subject, and interpersonal dynamics and have come to identify my personal learning style. Because of this project, I can successfully assess the setting/manner in which I learn best.

The topic of my six week project includes such a long history of Bryn Mawr as well as Haverford. There are multiple perspective to develop it and I found I just touch the surface. What we have done is learning the facts about how does Haverford went to co-ed and how does it affect the bi-co consortium, and the current connection of the two school and the students. However, I found I did not get enough background in this area and finding more about the situation of BMC before co-ed and after co-ed is necessary to finish this project. The history of bi-co consortium gives us the hint to analyze the current situation. We can see in what way do we want to build our relationship according to the past. Do we want to recover the more “intimate” relationship?

Through my project, I discovered the multiple levels of contact that occur in the buyer-seller relationship on the facebook 'For Sale For Free' page. I do not really think there is anything I specifically can continue with on my project, but I think that the things I learned from it are ideas that I will continue to think about in different areas of my life at Bryn Mawr. One of my biggest takeaways is thinking about the idea of the 'spirit of the honor code' and how it implicitly governs the ways in which the Bryn Mawr community communicates with one another. I think this term is applicable to contact in all aspects of the Bryn Mawr College community and is something I can continue to consider in all interactions I have at Bryn Mawr.
