Sleep Paralysis: Awake But Still Asleep

Hiro Takahashi

A person may wake up and find himself unable to move or speak as if he is frozen. He also may hear footsteps, see a ghost-like creature, or feel someone sitting on his chest. Throughout the history, people considered this phenomenon as work done by evil spirits. However, the modern science can explain the terrifying event as a Sleep Paralysis.

A Sleep Paralysis is possibly a hereditary disorder in which one experiences very frightening seconds or minutes of total body paralysis with little respiration and eye movements (1). A victim in this state feels awake, but he cannot move or speak (2). In addition to the immobility, the common symptoms include feeling choked or suffocated, hearing strange noises like footsteps and voices, seeing beings or dark shadows, and feeling an existance of someone in the room (1). Although these symptoms often direct the victims to believe in ghosts, mistransmission of neural signals in the brain causes Sleep Paralysis. When a person sleeps, his brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contraction (3). If he comes into consciousness before the brain sends signals to activate muscle contraction, he cannot move his body, and consequently, become "paralyzed"(2).

In order to understand how a body becomes paralyzed while the person is awake, it is necessary to understand sleep cycles. In a mammalian sleep, the brain activity undergoes two different states called non-REM (NREM) sleep and REM sleep, which differ very much from wakefulness (3). NREM and REM sleep alternate cyclically through the night; in human, about 80 minutes of NREM sleep starts a night of sleep, about 10 minutes of REM sleep follows, and this 90 minute cycle is repeated about 3 to 6 times during the night (3). During NREM sleep, a body produces few movement, but the body has capability of tossing about in bed and producing some other motor events, such as sleepwalking and sleeptalking (3). The cardiac-muscle contraction and breathing occur at a uniform rate, and the eyes move slowly (2). During REM sleep, on the other hand, heart rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure vary (3). The eyes move rapidly because most dreaming takes place in this period, and the sleeper probably "look" at the moving objects in a dream (2).

The brain's control over muscles during REM sleep points out that in this period, a body is normally in the state of total paralysis, called a "nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis" (3). Probably to prevent a person from "acting out" a dream, the brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contractions (2). Although some peripheral muscles, such as the muscles of the fingers and face, still twitch, the large skeletal muscles become relaxed, or "paralyzed" as a result (3). Some evidence supports that the motor paralysis of REM sleep protect against the acting out of one's dreams. A patient who suffers from rare syndrome called REM Sleep Behavior Disorder lacks the normal nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis, and he acts out violent dreams during REM sleep, often with injurious consequences (4). For example, a 60-year-old surgeon dreamt that he was attacked "by criminals, terrorists, and monsters who always tried to kill [him]" and fighting against them in the nightmare, he was actually punching and kicking his wife who slept in the same bed (4).

A nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis during REM sleep is accomplished actively by postsynaptic inhibition of motorneurons (3). Although the exact process of motor inhibition is not clear, some neurotransmitters and hormones are known to generate the many components of REM sleep. Aministering physostigmine, an inhibitor of the catabolic enzyme, increases the concentration of acetylcholine within the neurons in the pons, making it possible to artificially generate and start REM sleep in the middle of NREM sleep (3). Carbachol, the cholinergic agonist, produces a period of REM sleep in cat when directly injected into the pontine tegmentum (3). The hormone melatonin, a "master hormone" (5) that mainly controls circadian rhythms, also seems to play an important role in enhancing the REM state; the level of melatonin secretion by the pineal gland reaches its lowest during REM sleep (5). Such neurotransmitters and hormones probably activate or inhibit the activity of second messengers, which then activate or inhibit the third messengers, and so on till the last messenger inhibit the synaptic transmission or cause hyperpolarization of the motorneurons. And if, for some reason, the nervous or endocrine system continues to release the neural inhibitors, a person may experience Sleep Paralysis as he enters awakefully into or awakens directly from REM period (2).

While the modern neuroscience can describe the state of Sleep Paralysis as some errors of the neural transmission in the brain during REM sleep, a person who has seen or heard ghost-like figures/voices may easily believe that eveil spirits fully controlled his entire body. However, the images or noises, which the victim believes that he has seen or heard, are most likely hallucinations; and hallucinations, too, can result from the brain activity. In the 1960's, the Canadian neurologist W. Penfield introduced that electrical stimulation of the temporal lobe can cause the auditory hallucinations in the wake state (5). The buzzing or ringing sounds in the ears and other auditory hallucinations are closely associated with the activity of the auditory cortex and involves the temporal lobe (5). During the early period of sleep paralysis, the activity of the temporal lobe increases significantly, sometimes inducing hallucinatory sense (5). Similarly, the visual cortex generates internal visual stimuli, causing the victim to "see" terrifying figures during the paralysis (5).

How an episode of Sleep Paralysis induces visual or auditory hallucinations is still not clear, but it seems to have a significant relationship with anxiety (5). For anxiety is a neurocognitive event closely related to both psychological and physical processes, the extreme anxiety or panic may cause the release of several different signal molecules that trigger all kinds of physical events (5). A person experiencing Sleep Paralysis feels mortal fear or extreme panic, and hence, the brain generates and releases internal visual or auditory stimuli, producing hallucinations.

Also, hallucinations during Sleep Paralysis may happen, for one keeps dreaming even after some parts of his brain wakes up directly from REM sleep. Since the nervous and endocrine systems continue to release the neural inhibitors which sustain the paralysis, it may be possible that those systems keep releasing the neural activators that stimulate dreaming. Thus, a person continues to "see" the images and "hear" the noises produced in the dream that he has just had in REM sleep from which he has awaken.

Understanding more neural concepts of Sleep Paralysis, some researchers now hypothesize that a very rare condition called Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome (SUNDS) may closely relate to Sleep Paralysis (1). Upon the death, a SUNDS victim produces no body movement even though he experiences a myocardial infarction and strong breathing difficulties and should straggle in agony (5). The death may be caused by the extreme muscle atonia during Sleep Paralysis, which is so severe that even the cardiac muscles and the diaghragm paralyze (5).

Until I started researching on this subject, I have believed that the total paralysis of a body is due to an evil taking absolute control over the body. However, the interactions between neurons in the brain can explain this seemingly mysterious phenomenon in a scientific way. Although the explanation is not complete yet, for there are many unclear processes about Sleep Paralysis, the current hypothesis appears to reject the possibility of ghosts on this matter. Of course, it is impossible to completely disprove the existence of "spirits", "minds", or "God" affecting one's behavior. Nevertheless, like Sleep Paralysis and SUNDS, many or the mysterious conditions and behaviors which are only explained in supernatural terms probably result from brain.

I have been trying to figure out what was going on in my sleep untill i read this. Now i am happy to know what my body was expeiencing. It's quite scary your first couple experiences of sleep paralysis but now i'm gonna stay calm when it is happening to me and try to get my own understanding of the experience ... I have had sleep paralyisis at least once per month for the last 8 years. I am 29 as of this writing. I just had the experience about 1 hour ago and thus has caused me to do reasearch about it on the net. I noticed that many Dr.'s contribute this to anxiety, stress and other factors. My question is ... why is there always an evil presence in that concious yet body is still asleep phase? Today I heard a loud static sound, and opened my eyes to a spider crawling all over my arm. When I prayed to God, or said His name (Jehovah) the spider would start to disappear. I finally went thru my mental prayer when I awoke. This leads me to believe that it is more of a spiritual occurence, because I never have positive images while in this paralized state. I know there are many things in which our ancestors thought it was demonic rather than scientific, only to find there was a scientific explanation. However, I think this is different and cannot be simply written off as "scientific". There is not enough proof to show that it is scientific.

About a month ago I had another episode of sleep paralysis and I saw a small presence in the room with me. It was dark, and I could not see it's face (I am getting chills typing about it right now). My question is, why is there always an evil presence not only associated with my episodes, but so many others I have read about? ... Abel, 24 August 2006

i was thinking it is evil who do that during night but now i find out why. I am suffering from sleep paralyze possibly every nigh spicily when i have dinar ... Salah Nasser, 28 January 2007

I used to have this sleeping disorder when I was a child.  It has come back once or twice with adulthood, but otherwise, it is in the past.  I used to, with great effort, move my hand to my face and pull an eye open, which would wake me up, but sometimes the struggle was too much and I would go on into a deeper sleep.

Since the brain can do this to me, can it also cause me to get migraines just as I am about to wake up?

It seems, as I have discovered, if I get less than 4 hours sleep a night, I do not get migraines.  If I get 6 hours or more, it's about a 90% chance I will wake with a migraine.  Later in the day, I get an hour or two nap and that is the routine as it works.  Doctors just sort of treat the migraine and don't get into the sleep thing I have.  I take MaxAult for the migraines when they do get me.

I woke one time, and just as I woke, I felt this white-hot needle going into my head... bingo.  A migraine in 5 seconds.  That is how they can occur.  I wake with them otherwise.  I figure it my brain doing things it shouldn't.  I have a clean bill of health otherwise.

Thanks for your time.  Have a good day ... Jay, 11 February 2007

I have a question, and hope someone out there has an answer, it has been months and I have thus far failed to find one.  Has there ever been a record of anyone receiving the effects of sleep paralysis without having been asleep?  The reason I ask this, is a while ago, having not slept in a few hours, I was sitting at my computer, and it seemed to have happened to me. Within seconds I was too tired to hold up my own head, and my breathing got very difficult. Then I began to feel a sort of dizziness as my limbs lost feeling, and dropped to my side. after this, the dizziness turned to near blindness. I could see, but nothing would focus, and everything I tried to look at seemed to dart around like a mosquito. By this time I had no feeling in my entire body, could move nothing without quite a bit of concentration, and I could barely breath.  My mother heard me try and make out some kind of cry for help, and found me there spilled into my computer chair. She rolled me to my bed, and poured me into it. Within about 10-15 minutes I had regained everything I once had, but my sea legs did not ware off for another ten or so minutes.  I went to the emergency soon after. I had an E.K.G. and a C.A.T. scan, with no results, and I piss less in a week then the amount of blood they took that night. After basically telling me I was lying, the doctor told me that my symptoms did not fit anything at all.  What I do know, is I have been researching the issue ever since, and can only base my problem on Sleep Paralysis. All the symptoms match. And again, my question....Has there ever been a record of someone under the effects of sleep paralysis without ever having gone to sleep?  I hope you can shed some sort of light on this subject, as it,...well, it freaked me the hell out, and no one has been able to answer me!  Thank you for your time ... I used get this "evil paralysed me" feeling when i was paralysed and usually saw a ghost. i tried to shout or move but no sound escaped my mouth and couldn't move at all. it happened again yesterday and was almost convinced that ghosts/evil spirits were getting the better of me. But, me being a practical and logical guy, erjected this theory and started researching on this phenomenon. I came across this research paper on Sleep Paralysis. This greatly helped me in alleviating my fears. And next time i "see" a ghost during sleep paralyses, ill just laugh at it ;-)  Thanks for the research ... Siddarth, 10 December 2007

I have found an effective treatment for sleep paralysis

I have suffered from sleep paralysis all my life. I have found that wearing a heart rate monitor watch set to vibrate has effectively cured me. As my heart rate goes way up during sleep paralysis, it vibrates and wakes me. I hope it works for others too.

first time.

my first time was midday today when i was babysitting my cousin's children. i had fallen asleep on the floor right next to the front door. i'm thinking it was about 2 hours into my sleep when i woke up to what i thought was my cousin walking in the front door. well i panic and thought "omg i wasn't suppose to fall asleep! i'm going to be in big trouble!" i felt the presence of what i thought was my cousin standing right by my head. so i try to get up when i realized that i couldn't. i was laying on my stomach with my hands on either side by my ears. i had a MASSIVE headache! felt like i was being jamed right into the ground, especially my head. and i had my eyes open, but was having a hard time making out what there was, it was really blurry. i tried again and again to get up, but couldn't. so i was panicing even more that my cousin must think i'm wipped out cold, so i try to say something like "brandon say hi to your dad" but it wouldn't come out. so then i started freaking out 'did someone drug me? omg the front door wasn't locked, maybe someone came in and drugged me! or maybe (saying i am a type 1 diabetic and has never seized) it had to do with my blood sugar, maybe i was really low and weak so that i could not get up.' so once again i tried calling out for help, but nothing came out. FINALLY i started to get up, but once i looked towards the front door, no one had been there, this whole time i thought that this presence i was feeling was my cousin, when really it wasn't. no one had been there. once my mom came and picked me up i told her the whole story, and it turned out that she had that alot when she was younger too.

Here's what I know, sorry its long but have a lot to tell....

I have had Sleep Paralysis off and on since I was at least 5, as the earliest episode I remember was when I was 5. It usually happens to me when waking in the middle of the night, commonly between 1 and 3am. But not always, sometimes it is when I am drifting to sleep.

I am going to tell the most memorable instances, and would appreciate any feedback a person wishes to give on similarities.

First was when I was 5 years old, I had been sleeping in my mother's room as she said I was frequently having nightmares. I awoke and I remember thinking there was a man in the room and I had a sense that he was holding me down. For what I remember I really thought I saw a man, I even per my mother told her he had a brown suit on, but every time I think of this it just feels like a dream that I even actually saw someone, I think in my mind I wanted to have at least a face with this. I remember feeling very light and numb, I felt like something was smothering me but I couldn't do anything about it. I wanted to grab my mom but couldn't move. Felt like something was trying to pull me back to sleep, but I had to stay awake because there was a man in our room. I don't remember much of what happened the rest of this episode other then I must have fallen back asleep. I always thought this was just a dream, I had told my mom the next morning that a man was in her room last night and she freaked out and went around to make sure the doors were locked. She asked me more about it and said she thought I was just dreaming as she is a light sleeper and would have woken up.

My mother also told me that as a kid I used to have a lot of nightmares and also sleep walk frequently but I do not recall all this, other then I remember being scared of my bedroom. Well actually I do remember one instance of sleep walking when I was little, not actually doing the deed but just right before and after when I woke. I think I was around 8 or 9 and I had woken in the middle of the night, this is really kind of fuzzy but I know I had the same sensations, I know I was scared and I remember trying to keep awake. I felt I needed to get to my mom but I could not move at all. Had that sinking feeling and I would lose control, my eyes had started to shut but I had to keep them open and get to my mom. I can't remember all I felt and what happened that night, but my mom woke me the next morning as I was l sleep on the floor right by her door, the funny thing was that I even had my pillow with me, I had taken it. My mom took me to the doctor then because of the sleep walking. He had just told her that it is common for some kids and I should grow out of it.

Normally when I have had SP occur throughout my life, I just wake up and I can't move, I always feel like something is trying to pull me into a deep sleep and I'm trying to fight it. I usually feel like there is something there in the room with me, and even standing right next to me, but I can't move my head to look. Its like if I could just turn my head I would finally be able to see it, but I really can't move. Sometimes I know for fact my eyes are open and I can even move them; but then other times, even though it seems they are open, in fact they are shut, yet I can still see things.

On some occasions I can actually glimpse shadows, or silhouettes, but when I focus they are gone, its more a glimpse, like from the corner of the eye.

The scariest hallucinations are when I see spiders coming down from the ceiling, this usually happens when I am waking up, not when I am drifting to sleep, I will open my eyes and I feel like someone is actually sitting on my chest or pushing me down, sometimes I cant even breath, feels like my arms are detached from my body or gravity is holding them down. I look up in the dark and I think I see spiders coming down from the ceiling towards my face, I try and struggle but cant move, I am screaming inside but nothing is coming out, all I can muster out is a kind of moan or gurgle (My fiancé says some times it sounds like I'm choking, he has witnessed a few of my episodes). On the spiders, when I finally get out of it and focus there is nothing there, I will turn on the light and fully examine the ceiling and walls, but nothing is there.

At times I also think I see spider webs on the walls, but again nothing is there.

On all occasions it is when I am sleeping on my back. So I try and avoid it by sleeping on my side, the problem is I move around a lot in my sleep and almost always end up right back on my back. Come to think of it, when ever I have had it happen while I was just drifting off, each time I can recall I think I was on my back, and then the waking up I was always on my back.

2 other instances I want to stress, the first happened about 5 years ago, I was living with my (boyfriend at the time) in a high-rise condo, we had a balcony off our bedroom. I remember waking, felt like something had woke me, I heard kind of a zinging sound, kind of electric, thought for a sec the TV is on, but we didn't have a TV in our bedroom. I got really scared and noticed I couldn't move, it felt like I was being drugged back to sleep. A weird sensation I felt was that I was sinking into the bed. I felt this sense of dread like if I fell asleep I would die. I knew my boyfriend was beside me, but I kept thinking he wasn't there anymore, I wanted to scream for him but couldn't. There was this horrible smell. I kept thinking this isn't right, it's not right. Kept feeling something evil was in the room and if I could just turn my head I would see it, I didn't want it to come up to me, I wanted to catch it first. Was such a feeling of dread and helplessness! I started to imagine shaking my head and kept picturing myself shaking and actually felt the sensation of doing this (maybe I really was), and I got out of it. I sat up and surveyed the room quickly, wanted to catch, see something! My boyfriend was still there, as I looked around and passed my balcony sliding doors I got a glimpse of something that made me scream for real. I thought I saw a silhouette of a person outside on my balcony. My scream woke up my boyfriend and told him I think someone is on our balcony, I was terrified, he got up turned on the light and we found no one there. I even made him open the doors and go out side to look fully. Again it wasn't like I actually saw anyone, it was just a glimpse and just a shadowy silhouette.

Sometimes I can hear voices when this happens but nothing I can really make out, its almost like I'm next door to a group of people and they are all talking in hushed voices, but every time I think about it after, it just feels in my head, just a jumbled mess of voices not really there. A lot of times I will hear this static sound, like electricity, or a zing kind of sounds. Sometimes even a kind of buzzing sound. At times I will feal cold and all I want to do is reach back for the blankets, and that stresses me out the most is because I cant get them.

Ok the final instance I will be specific on happened less then 2 years ago. I had been living in a town house. I remember it was really hot and stuffy in my place, my bedroom was upstairs. I decided to sleep downstairs as it was a bit cooler in the living room, I had all the windows open. I watched TV for a bit, but then turned it off as I was getting tired and I laid on my back on the couch and starred up at the ceiling for a few thinking until I drifted off. I don't think it was long after I drifted when I had an attack of SP. The first thing I noted was I heard this electric sound in my head, kind of like just inside of my ear, it was loud, not pulsating just one sound, a straight zzzzzzzzzzz... I thought I had left the TV on, but I know I didn't. I was having a hard time breathing and I just wanted to wake up. I had again this sense of absolute dread and that I really had to get out of there, I had to move! I felt like something was pulling me through my legs, if that makes sense? Its just how I felt. I remember my arms were pinned at my side and I really wanted to lift them. I am sure I had my eyes open because I could see the ceiling and over towards the light by the front door, which I had left on (I want to note, that I'm 32 years old but if I am alone, I have to either sleep with a light on near by, or yes I'm afraid, a little "Night Light"). Ok what happened next was the scariest experience I have had so far, and this is what convinced me to see a doctor. The door to my basement was near my living room couch, I heard the scariest noises coming from it, I thought I heard footsteps as if someone was coming up my basements steps, and almost running. I think I had heard foot steps before, but almost seems like a distant memory and not really real. But this time it felt real. Then I thought I heard voices like some people whispering together. I was scared shitless at this point, but I felt like something was pulling me to sleep, I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore, but was freaked cause I HAD TO, I had to get up or really wake up! I couldn't allow this to happen. It was weird because I kept drifting at this point. The next point that happened I want to stress here felt more like a dream, but yet also feels like it really did happen, I am still confused on whether it did or not. I know for sure the other sensations happened but not what I am about to say next and you will see why. I basically managed to actually pull myself off of the couch, all I could think was to get out the front door and I would be safe. I was actually dragging my self across the floor to the front door, I could barely do this, I felt like something was still on top of me and pushing me down, gravity trying to suck me through the floor and again the sensation that something was trying to pull "me" through my legs. I got really close to the door when the sleep took over again, I couldn't do it anymore, I was exhausted and could not keep my eyes open. That was the last I remember. I awoke the next morning and I was on the couch, but I was drenched in sweat. The first thing I did was look to the front door, I wanted to remember if I actually had dragged myself across the floor, but I just felt confused and could not remember what happened after that, and I was after all back on the couch.

Later in the afternoon, I finally managed to drag myself down the basement stairs to investigate. I know no one was there, but I still needed the peace of mind, even though it took a bit for the courage to get me moving, and to be honest, I even brought a huge ass kitchen chef knife, just in case people really had broken in. There was after all no indication anyone was there, the basement window was locked, bolted from the inside, Obviously from that point on, it always took me a lot of courage and maybe a few sips of scotch before I could drag myself down there, even to do the laundry and I was usually always practically tripping over my own feet to get back up stairs fast enough.

After this instance I went in for a sleep study. No episode of SP happened during the study (it was 1 overnight study). What was found is that I do have sleep apnea and that apparently I awoke several times throughout my sleep "because of the apnea", but I don't remember any of that. I was also told about the Sleep Paralysis condition and associated Hypnopompic Hallucination and that it seems I am suffering from these. It was a relief to find this out, I always thought I was going crazy and it was a hard thing to talk about before this. My doctor has assured me, I am not nuts (yay!) and it is a very physical real phenomena that happens to almost everyone at least one point in their life. But for some, like myself and many others here, it is a constant hellish occurrence. He said this can come about from stress (I really am not a stressful person though, at least I don't think I am) and also when a person is sleep deprived (well to this I just have to laugh as the only reason I am sleep deprived is because of the SP! So kind of a vicious circle me thinks!). He recommended various medications (drugs) which I will not take (although I have heard that the natural herbal supplement melatonin is good, anyone ever tried it?).

But finally my doctor gave me some suggestions which have actually helped. The main two are, first always remain calm, realize what you may see, feel or hear is just the Hypnopompic Hallucinations. It is not real and the more you worry yourself the worse they can get. The second is, when it does occur just focus on moving a small limb, such as a finger, or a toe. I find that if I move my tongue and sometimes make that tongue slapping the top of the mouth sound or "tounge clicking", I will come out of it. I did also have a brain scan done, and other tests such as blood work, etc. from this it was found that "I am healthy and I am not prone to seizures".

I want to say, I am not religious, but I also don't want to offend really, but this is not god and it is not demons. If praying helped you that's great and here is the reason why, it's because the praying took concentration and therefore brought you out of it. The main point is concentrating.

I will also let you know that my fiancé has actually witnessed me having a few of these attacks. He for sure saw no demons, or shadowing figures around or next to me (Thank God! lol), no Witch was sitting on my chest, and certainly no Aliens had their space ship parked out our window and were trying to take me off to their mother ship for nostral testing (all the things you almsot feel are going to happen when you have SP, ok well wait, I do beleive in other planets and "Aliens", etc. we'd have to be really stupid to think we are the only ones in all the worlds, but I don't think I'm interesting enough for them to want me, haha). What my boyfriend has seen, is for a least two of my SP attacks, my eyes were open and that I was wide eyed in fact. He said my body did look very relaxed though, even though I told him that I was struggling inside and trying to scream. And again mostly all he has heard me do is gurgle or moan very slightly. Now when he wakes to me in one of these states, he puts his arms around me and I come out of it instantly, all you need is contact.

If anyone wishes to talk further on this subject, please feel free to e-mail me echopf@shaw.ca. Would welcome further conversations as I think we should band together, to me it makes the SP less scary.

Wow, I have had so many of

Wow, I have had so many of these experiences and I thought I was the only one. I am 30 years old and have had them for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, I used to 'wake up' to feelings of having someone in the room with me. I used to think my mom or sisters were walking in to wake me up and when I tried to tell them I was already awake I found i could not move or speak. It used to freak me out a little bit not being able to move until I started to realize that I wasn't quite awake or asleep and I just learned to live with it. Back then I was actually able to control it in a way and would make myself feel all kinds of cool things. I used to tell myself I could fly and I would actually feel like I was floating or flying. I remember feeling kinda special I could do it. I went for a long period of not having any or just one or two a year until lately.

It wasn't until lately that they've gotten really scary. I notice that they usually happen now, when I am drifting off to sleep. It is always when I am either falling asleep on the couch or if I am falling asleep in my bed after waking to go to the bathroom or to get water or something like that. Never when I am going to sleep in my own bed at my regular hour. When they happen now I instantly feel panic. I hear these weird voices or sounds in my ears like buzzing or static and sometimes feel a heavy weight on my head or chest. I struggle so hard to move to wake myself up because I know that once I do it will be OK. The weird thing is that I know I'm in that weird state and I know no one is in the room with me but no matter how many times I tell myself that, I am still scared to death and I want to wake up. I can't make myself do anything cool either, these days its just scary. I usually end up waking up by shaking my leg or arm but it is usually after great effort. I don't know how long it takes, sometimes it feels shorter than others.

My husband has never witnessed any of this, but I do know that I make sounds sometimes because I hear myself grunt right as I am coming out of these. I just wanted to let you know I will try your suggestion of just moving a finger or my tongue and see if that helps. Last night I had about 5 of them in a row. I was soooooo tired that even though I kept waking myself out of them, I felt so drugged and tired that I would fall right back into 'sleep' and experience them. I was on my couch and finally after the last one managed to drag my body off the couch and into my bed where I fell right to sleep with no problem. The funny thing is it doesn't happen all the time I fall asleep on the couch, I don't know what causes it for me but it is so good to know that I am not alone. I finally decided to look it up today because I had so many of them last night. Anyway, thank you for your post, I will try it out next time (moving just my pinky) and see if it helps.

not alone

So glad to find that I am not alone... It is a truly scary experience to go through. Last night I had another of these episodes after not having them for a while.
I dreamt I was looking at myself in the mirror at a hospital, but as I was holding onto the sink I felt my legs start to rise and I was lifted vertically still holding onto the sink. Then I "woke up" in my room and saw myself being lowered onto the bed, as if into my own body. I felt as if I was floating. After I was on the bed, I felt very heavy and couldn't move anything but my eyes. There was pounding in my head and whooshing sounds. I also had the feeling that I was not alone in the room and was looking frantically around me to see what it was. After I could barely flip myself onto my back, I started seeing colored circles before my eyes, swirling. And they kept going with my eyes closed and open. Then I saw flashes of bright neon lights. And in a few mintues, I was able to sit up in bed. As I was very tired, I reluctantly fell back asleep.
I know its SP and nothing evil, but when you're going through such an experience you really can't help but pray to God that you don't die...

the same thing happens to me

the same thing happens to me every once in a while the last time it happened i woke up or i thought i was awake. The strange thing is that i was clearly facing the wall of my room when i rose from my bed but i could have sworn i was facing the door. The door to my room was open that night and i could hear my sister cooking, but i couldn't yell nor move. When i was finally free from this my body felt like it was going back to the same state so i jumped out of bed and start to walk around my house. The only question i have is can anyone die from this? Because its getting harder to breath in this state so if anyone can answer this question much thanks

I Experience This As Well

I'm 22 years old and have been experiencing, what I now believe to be sleep paralysis, for the past several years. When I was younger it was definitely frightening and for a long time I convinced myself that it was just part of a dream.

I usually only have this experience when I'm beginning a nap, usually in the middle of the day. If I have been active all day and am moderately tired I will fall to sleep with no incident. The paralysis always comes when I'm lying on my back. As soon as I begin to drift off I will get a spiraling feeling and sometimes I will actually see a colorful spinning pinwheel shape and hear a loud "wah-wah" that will increase in tempo. After a few seconds I can, at least I think, open my eyes and look around the room. I am conscious of my slow beating heart and I can clearly make out any sounds around me such as people talking or the television. I cannot, however, move any of my larger muscles. With great effort I have found it possilbe to wiggle fingers or move my tounge which usually wakes me up.

As I mentioned I'm not really sure if I open my eyes, but I am sure that I can see the room and the objects and other people that may be in it. I find that I often will also feel that my body is extremely light as if I'm almost floating. Just yesterday I had an experience where I was napping on the sofa and I could no longer move my muscles but I could see my sister walk through the room and into the laundry room. I was actually able to follow her into the other room and watch her fold clothes. I'm not sure if this is "out of body" because I never recall being able to see myself asleep. But after waking up yesterday, I did walk into the other room and find my sister still folding laundry just as she was during my nap.

I should also note that I've never experienced a dark or evil feeling that accompanies the paralysis. I pray every night before sleeping and often drink half a glass of water. I would say these experiences occur at least one a week.

For those of you that have fear of these experiences I would suggest trying to see what happens if you do not fight to wake up. I found that when I was young and quit trying to wake my self up the experience was actually exhilirating. I have also found that when I do have an experience and I tell myself that I want to dream about a certain subject and I let myself drift into a deeper sleep I will actually have what I believe is described as a lucid dream. I am aware that I am dreaming and I can actually control my dream. Over the past few months I've gotten to the point that I can relax and actually force myself into an episode and often have some interesting dreams.

I believe there may be some truth to the relationship between stress and sleep paralysis. I just began medical school last month and my episodes have definitely increased in frequency. Additionally, there is probably a genetic link as well. My younger brother has similar experiences but his episodes seem only to occur as he is waking up where as mine occur as I fall asleep.

Thanks to everyone else who has posted their experiences, it is comforting to know that others can understand how frightening and surreal an episode can be.

Sleep paralysis

I had never experienced or heard of this until very recently. My mother in law had died in 2006, 4 months after I was married. In 2007, I had a very vivid dream. In this dream there were no words exchanged. I could see her but my husband was unable to. She kept running at him as if to say," I'm here but you can't see me." She'd look at me as if to help her tell him she was there. She was so upset she couldn't get to him. When I awoke, my mind was fully awake but my body was not. I could speak to myself(in my head) and I kept saying," oh my god, I think I'm dead." I began getting tingling sensations in my feet and hands. Slowly, I began to come back into myself. This occurance happened two more times and only in the house she use to live in. I was so afriad to sleep, I would try to stay awake. I began praying that it would stop and for the last year it hasn't happened again.

I had not associated stress / fatigue with this before

I'm a healthy 24 year old female and have experienced this since I was about nine or ten years old. Contrary to most people's experience, I've never felt that anything spiritual or evil is going on: I was always fairly sure that it was physical / mental and that there was a scientific explanation. I'm not sure what's taken me so long to head to Google for an answer...

This happened to me again this morning after a bad night's sleep (thank you, thunder storm) and was one of the first times I've felt totally lucid. I actually thought, "you must Google this tomorrow." I have been sleeping irregularly and been under a fair bit of stress lately as well.

I heard two things: someone turning the pages in a book (I thought perhaps my husband was reading) and then a pulsing static noise that seemed to be inside my head. I can, with difficulty, move my eyes and hands / arms. Sometimes toes. Breathing can be tough. Oddly, I believe this morning was the first time I heard really distinct things. I've never seen anything during sleep paralysis.

I'm thankful to have read a lot of the experiences people have relayed here. I was fairly sure I was not alone, but it's nice to know.

legs being lifted up in the air

I am writing this after just having the most scary night terror/sleep paralysis. I have had about 12 such experiences. I feel like I am trying to wake up but cannot and I feel my legs being lifted up in the air by some sort of presence I cannot see but just sense. This last time it was worse as I felt i was being strangled and really found it hard to breath. I was trying so hard to wake up and just when I thought I was moving and actually sitting up I would find myself still sleeping. Why do my legs always feel like they are being raised up???? I asked my children if they had heard me scream when I woke up finally-such a relief!! They said no. I am still out of breath typing this and my heart racing a bit. I have had two episodes this week and before this a few weeks ago. But if anyone has had this leg raising feeling please write about it as not many people here have mentioned it. Thankyou and best wishes everyone!

sleep paralysis could this be the answer?

Hi there, just thought i would drop you a line RE: Sleep paralysis, you are not a lone by any means i also have had my arms pushed by a force or energy up in the air i could not control this, i feel surges of very strong energy move up my legs in fact only last night i felt as though an energetic sword was going in and out of my forehead very strange i hear voices and i have heard prople call my name and then i see a soldier getting shot in the war and dying i had this particular dream 3 times i have picked up radio signals, i have felt and heard many things, so just to let you know you are not alone in this, my particular theory is that there is an energy shift in this world we a all picking up singnals they is nothing to fear just ask Lord Jesus or whoever you pray to, to put a blue light of protection around you before you sleep this may help, i also think it could be alot to do with astro travelling, and our innate psychic abilities my thoughts and prayers are with you and all of you, many blessings in LOVE & LIGHT Mary

multiple times every single night for a year!

Hi. I'm 18 years old and have been having sleep paralysis for about a year now. The very first time it happened I was so so scared. I was paralysed and felt like I would stay that way forever unless I somehow wiggled my way out of it, and there was this girl hovering about my body who seemed to be sucking the life out of me while she say "hi" in a calming but freaky echoing tone. From then i went to explain it to most people at my school..all thought that it was just a nightmare but i knew it was something else. then one korean girl said i had a curse that was all about 'spirit hovering over me'. From that day on with probably only a couple of days exception i have had sleep paralysis every night and up to 15 episodes every night. When i first got it i was so frightened that if I didn't get out of it everytime that i would stay paralysed forever so i always managed to wiggle my fingers and toes, but with it happening so many times a night i got so tired of it so one night i just decided to fall deep into it and realised that eventually i came out of it.. so from then on i just go with it, unless it gets really scary then i get out of it. Sleep paralysis is a part of me.. and from what I have read i think i must have it the worst in the world! Strangely though, i would never want to get rid of it. Its weird but sometimes its really fun and i can control it to an extent, but ofcourse most of the time it is a weird and uncomfortable experience but i love that its something so crazy that people dont understand and i have learnt to live with it.
Just last night i had it 4 times and theres no doubt i will have it at least that many times tonight. I'm just a normal teenager.. i dont do anything out of the ordinary, i dont no why i have sleep paralysis so much. please reply if you have it as often as me because Id love to hear what u think.

the reasons for paralysis

well ive read alot of these comments and this is also what exactly happens to me!!..im just 18 but i will try to explain why this happens

its very scary and i think it happens when a person is really scared.. the presence that one feel of an evil spirit around us while sleep paralysis is probabaly our own negative energy...i think our own fears haunt us..its like they control us thats why
for example just last night i felt like something was holding me down i was trying to shout but i couldnt...i couldnt move i was scared like shit...but you knw what maybe its just myself... maybe when we dont allow ourselves to be free ...we are to scared to do things we want to...that is when it happens..maybe thats our own negative energy whhich comes out of us and takes a weird form
sometimes during this you will also feel sexually molested by a spirit....its crazy but in my point of view this happens is when for example a woman is
1. afraid of getting raped
2.her sexual needs are not satisfied

and you knw the explaination of why you feel like a spirit is talking to you or reciting something in another language is probably a sign of you being confused about relegion...this has happened to me once somethin recited arabic in my ear i felt like the waves were going through my body...and at that point i was confused about relegion and stuff

summing it all up i think it happens when you are trying to find answers ...when you are confused when you are in search for love and you feel bad about urself..u doubt yourslf ov being good enough.. the fears inside you take a physical form and disturb you even when you are unconscious
here are some tips
1.when it occurs dont lose you calm..let it happen ...dont try to fight it..
2.tell yourself b4 sleeping even if it happens im not afraid of it..it wont kill me and the fact is it duznt KILL YOU:)
3.try to figure out ways of getting over ur fears..u knw if ur afraid of lizards next time you see it ..keep watching it and tell urself im ok..im brave..anything your scared of just face it boldly
4.just dont think about it much because you knw when you think about something too much then it does happen!!

okie so concentrate on other things...things you like..athings ur afraid of just tell urself im brave and just dont think about it more..and next time you go in a paralysis state just let it happen and smile during it:)

hey i totally agree with

hey i totally agree with what your saying. But mostly on the sex part. The first time one 'sexually molested' me i was really freaked out and got out of the paralysis as quick as i could... but now when it happens, and i know this sounds weird/gross but please tell me if it happens to u to but i go along with it and sometimes i can change the face of the spirit to someone i want it to be....

Anonymous's picture

I totally agree too!

I too can sometimes control it. I try to make it into someone who I want it to be...but only for a little while. Then the evilness of it all comes in deeper and freaks me out. I have to force myself awake by screaming for Jesus or my Grandmother. Scary shit!!! But sometimes its sexually exciting...until it gets scary again.

Oh my god I was finally able to see a glimpse of it,

I used to have SP since I was 17 or 18, nothing major, mild feeling of muscle paralysis, the feeling of being awake, a presence in the room, sometimes trying to pull the sheets and uncover you, and unable to move a finger, but recently I had quite a frightening experience, I was lying on the couch slept for about 4 hours when that thing started, my head felt heavier, I could feel my heart beats started to slow down, for A second I thought I was a goner, so I used my willpower to fight that state of paralysis or at least try to snap out of it, I could only open my right eye, when my right eye was open it started to scan the whole living room incontrolably , then suddenly I could see a shadowy figure flying rapidely past the couch more like black sparkling crow feathers could not see the whole figure as it diseapered inside the wall, that scared me a lot, because now I could not only feel the presence but also caught a glimps of it, If it was a brain trick I could live with that, but I have I feeling that there is more to it than some sicentific explanation.

sleep paralysis

I have been having sleep paralysis almost every night for the past few weeks. I used to have it just every so often, but now I get it very frequently. The first few times were terrible; I have never been so terrified in my own skin. I felt like a demon was hovering over me, and I (thought) I felt a cold gust of wind come over me.

Now, when this happens, I am so used to it, I understand what it is, so I lay there and allow it to happen. My body becomes very tingly ALL OVER, and I can literally feel myself fall asleep. It starts where it feels like something is putting pressure on my body repetitively, then all I have to do is concentrate on falling into deeper sleep, and it happens. I feel my body falling into sleep, but my mind remains awake during this whole process. Then, after my body is completely asleep, my mind usually follows suit about a minute or two later.

I've started to enjoy this process, actually, and look forward to it each night. I always experiment every time it happens... to see what I can and cannot do when this is taking place. I used to be really into "astral projecting," and I don't know whether it is real or not, but I know that the best time to do this is while the body is asleep and the mind is awake. I have been trying to accomplish this, but it hasn't happened.... yet.

Can anyone else tell me if they have had these same experiences?

Erin's picture

What do I do about it?

I also have the samething but when it happens to me I can't move and either my eyes wont open at all or I see blurry. I can make small noises (kind of like moaning) and I can breath but its pretty small breaths. When mine happens though it feels like something is touching me all over, like my arms are spread away from my body so I cant guard myself. I think the first time it happened was when I was 9 or 10 maybe. I turned over on my back and stretched my arms above my head and my arms stayed stuck that way and for the life of me I couldnt move or call for help because it came out in a whisper. I could make out seeing was my nightlight and my door being cracked open, it scared me so much I told my grandmother later on and she said it was demons holding me down. I've been thinking that was the case ever since but now that I've finally looked it up I know thats not the case and it relieves me. I guess since I spend most of my time fighting to move during SP I tire myself out and doze back off to sleep and actually dream that some black creature is holding me against my will and touching me. How do I stop this from happening and what can I do while its happening?

Jason's picture

NOT A PROBLEM

I get sleep paralysis occasionally, and its really frustrating trying to move but you just cant. It's not a problem for me because i dont have any hallucinations, and it usually only lasts a minute or two for me. For anyone who is scared of it, my advice is just to chill when you get it and just relax.

sp

hey, i have had sp's now for about 6 years i remember the first 1 i ever had i was im the bak bed room of my mams house, it was about 2-3 in the morning and i was suddnley woken by this over whelming smell of alcohol and an intence presure on my chest i tryed screaming, but it wouldnt come out, could move, i could just smell alcohol. a few weeks later the same thing happend but there was no presure on my chest and no smell of alcohol, and now every time it happens theres nothing, sometimes i fal straight back to sleep and other time i fight and fight till i can move again i come out of the sp screaming and on the odd time laughing i dont find it scary now just annoying as most of you would agree. thank you for an insite in to your experiances, and happy sleeping lol.

Anonymous's picture

My second time

Strangest thing. The last 2 months I've felt like there is someone looking at me a distance behind me, at the other end of the room, right behind me by the door. You know, that feeling you get, turn around and someones there, your girl/boyfriend, mom or what not. Instinctively I turn around and nobodies there. Anyways, I'm agnostic and just about 8 hours ago I do a little prayer, cause I've been feeling strange for about 6 months now. And what do you know, Im sleeping, wake up, fall a sleep again. Dreaming about playing a videogame or something, and suddenly everything starts to go into slow motion and I feel as do Im being forced, lulled into a deeper heavier state of sleep and I try to lift my head and I barely can and boom. I'm in a dream with a demon in my head (invincible force) I cant talk or move. But I force my self, so I can walk, but stiff as a corpse. I see my grandpa, he's a priest I manage to point to myself (all stiff hands) but as if Im fighting some force to move and I make noises I force my self to make some noise. And he says. You want me to get it out of you just like that? I doesnt work like that. it wont help. you need to do some praying, you cant just all of asudden belive in god to help you hen you only need it. and then it gets worse. So I run around not able to talk or move my arms, and barley being able to see. And like the demon screaming in my head when I and my mom pray for it to go. Then in the dream everything goes black, My eyes are forced shut and I try and try to open them but cant. I wake up face down the pillow. Dizzy and cold shivvers. And Im feeling the pressense by the door as Im typing this. Not good. I always seen religion as superstition, what is going on. God or praying a trigger for this? strange. So if I ha not thoght giving prayer a shot. This happend a while back after praying. I havent prayed after that (cause it scared me shitless) and so far so good, till this night. I guess the lesson is "pray" and be tormented, give up that god stuff and be alright. odd thing. I feel relaxed now. Im trying to be rational about this.

I had it bad last night

hello everybody .. Ive had SP since I was 11 (im 20 now) Ive felt every "symptom" everyone has described everytime I go into SP it even happened to me back in middel school during the day while in class, you feel you cant move, your moving your eyes and you see everything thats happening around you but you cant even scream, i hated it so bad i start praying after i get out of it but it still gets me whenever i try to go back to sleep it would stop if i go to sleep with the light on or the tv on .. why I HAVE NO IDEA? .... after so long of dealing with this yesterday was the freakiest experience of them all, id say 10 min after i went to sleep i wope up to SP everytime it happens i fight (i dunno what im fighting or whom) to get out of it, i usually sleep with one hand over my stomach, while in SP i felt my arm was rising or someone or something was rising it well above my body level, once i got out of it my hand was still on my stomach .... I was so tireddd before this cuz i had been studying all day .. i couldnt go back to sleep for a good hour and a half - i turned on the tv and fell sleep with it on ... i soo hate it when this happens.. ive read every story and im at the very least glad that it does not only happens to me , although its the first time i decide to research on it .... any comments on it , more than welcome!

Sleep Paralysis: How I stopped having it!!!

Sleep Paralysis:
I suffered from Sleep Paralysis, it was horrible. Including thinking that something was in the room with me and seeing things in the dark, especially the red LCD numbers on my bedroom clock which for some reason always seemed to catch my frighten state? I did not go to see a doctor because I didn’t have the money at the time. I heard somewhere that some people can control their dreams. People, who had nightmares that needed to take control of them, were able to learn how to chase their monsters away. I started trying to take control of my dreams, when I went to bed I shut my eyes and tried to stay relax. I started actually dreaming while I was still awake. After trying this for some days I was able to control my dreams, meaning that I could change what was happening in then, sometimes like I was a third person watching a movie, sometimes I could just change my nightmare into a dream; but best of all I could Wake Myself Up. So now I was able to use this ability to control what was happening to me, as a small part of my conscious mind was alert to realize when I was having the sleep paralysis attacks; I was able to say to myself with my inner voice, WAKE UP! WAKE UP! WAKE UP! From that night on I was always able to successfully wake myself up; it really works.

To make matters worse; sometimes this was accompanied by one of my arms falling completely asleep, ‘going numb from lack of proper blood flow’, this is scary, as it seemed that my arm was in one place, but was physically in another; I would have to find my arm, pick it up, ‘not unlike dead weight’ it seemed to weight a ton, and shake it eventually experiencing the 'pins and needles', of my arm awakening. While awakening my arm would sometimes jerk outward, one time hitting me right in the face; that hurts getting punched in the face by your own arm, but my arm did not receive any burses, this has something to do with the nerve endings being asleep and so not sending any impulses of the impact to the brain.

I no longer suffer from sleep paralysis, and my arm no longer falls asleep.
Now I have dreams at night; it is very restful to sleep without fear.

Scary so called sleep paralysis

Hi my name is Robert im 22 yrs yung ....

MY STORY
--------
IV'E HAD MANY OF THESE OCCASIONS AND THEY ARE REALLY SCARY ESPECIALLY FOR PEOPLE LIKE (ME AFRAID OF THE DARK AND GHOST) WHICH IVE REALLY NEVER SEEN. ANYWAYZ ONE INCIDENT I HAD WAS WHEN I WAS LAYING IN MY ROOM ABOUT 17 YRS OF AGE, I DON'T RECALL IF I WAS ASLEEP BUT WHAT DID HAPPEN WAS I HAD MY EYES OPEN AND I KNEW IT WAS MY ROOM IV'E BEEN LAYING DOWN IN, I COULD NOT MOVE. I TRIED TO SCREAM FOR HELP BUT NOTHING WOULD COME OUT. SUDDENLY A NASTY HAND WITH GREEN VIENS ON TOP WAS REACHING OVER MY BODY FROM ABOVE MY HEAD AND I WAS SCARED. A FEW SECONDS LATER I SHOOK THE SCARY IMAGE OF ME AND REALIZE NOTHING HAD BEEN THERE AS I SEARCH AROUND. A FRIEND OF MINE HAD TOLD ME HE HAD THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO HIM AND HE HAD AN ARM WITH VIENS ON HIM, AND THE SCARY PART WAS HE TOLD ME WITHOUT ME TELLING HIM FIRST OR IN FACT ANYBODY.

ANOTHER INCIDENT
----------------
THIS ONE IS MORE SCARIER, I REMEMBER LAYING DOWN ON THE COUCH AND NOT BIENG ABLE TO MOVE MY BODY AND ALSO I WAS SPEECHLESS, IT WAS NIGHT AND I SEEN A SKELTON IMAGE NOT FAR FROM ME. HE WAS LAUGHING AT ME EVIL ( I WAS SCARED).
A FEW SECONDS LATER IN THE TERRIFYING SITUATION, I SEEN AN EVIL DARK IMAGE OUTSIDE, (MY DOOR WAS OPENED BUT THE SCREEN DOOR WAS SHOOT SO COOL AIR CAN COME IN) AND I FELT MY SPIRIT COMING OUT OF MY BODY WITH THE SCARY IMAGE OUTSIDE. I CRIED FOR GOD'S HELP AND SUDDENLY WAS RELEASED FROM THE TERROR. I'F I CONTINUE TO LAY DOWN I WILL FEEL MY BODY STARTING THE GET THAT VIBE FEELING AS I'M GOING BACK TO THE TERROR, SO I TRY TO STAY AWAKE SITTING UP, BUT IT ALWAYS BECOMES HARD FOR I AM COMPLETELY EXHAUSTED.

IV'E BEEN IN MANY OF THE SCARY SO CALLED SLEEP PARALYSIS AND NONE ARE FUN TO BE IN. REMEMBER THIS

GOD DOES EXSIST AND SO DOES THE BETRAYER, IN HEAVEN WITH GOD THERE IS NO SLEEP AND AND WITH DEATH THERE IS. GOD EXSIST AND IF EVER YOU NEED HELP OR JUST WANT TO TALK TO OUR LOYAL GOD, PRAY - HE IS THERE - THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND TAKE CARE - GOD BLESS

feedback

A member of my family described the very same examples listed here and I thought about doing some research on it. I've, too, experienced them when I was little, quite a lot, and just like some of you, never bothered to check it out until now. When I was a child, it was almost a certain fact that if I'll sleep on my back I'll have that 'blocking feeling' while sleeping. I never was courageous enough, like others I've seen here, to explore it further once it started, I immediately jolted my body out of it. I don't recall trying to move my arms or legs, only tried to shout but when I realized that doesn't work, I used to jolt my chest. That was the only way for me to wake up from it. It does feel like the longer I wait, the much, much harder it is (or the bigger the effort) in order to move and eventually wake up.
It happened only once in the last 15 or so years (am 29 years old), a couple of months ago. What was different that day is the fact that I was sleeping on my left side for the first time in years - which I think was the most important factor of all. Was lightly stressed, had few hours of sleep during previous night, slept in an environmentally cold room and most likely not hydrated enough.

I only sleep on my back and seems that even after nights of very little hours of sleep, it doesn't seem to trigger it. At first I thought this to be the reason: the biological clock was 'misfiring'. Since every episode occurred at about the exact same time, I compared it to the way I used to wake up every morning for school, waking up naturally without an alarm clock, at precisely the same time. I initially thought having little hours of sleep, bio-clock was over-stressed or something and started to do its thing without the rest of the brain's approval.

Not certain at all about why or what is causing this, probably a combination of some factors.. I truly hope this input will help someone:

- While sleeping at night, don't alternate between sleeping positions, let your body get used to a single sleep position. Note your 'magnetic' sleeping position as well (head towards East or West and so on). It probably might be useful when noddin' in another room or re-locating?.
- Be well hydrated during the day and especially drink water before going to sleep. Careful not to drink so that you'll wake in the middle of the night. Depending on each persons' needs, in my case half of glass will do without waking up for #2. I'm not very fond of caffeine based drinks or coffee. Also avoiding large meals couple of hours before sleep, though, once or twice a week I break this rule and it doesn't seem to trigger it.
- If previous night' sleep was less than 7 hours of sleep (or how much one requires for a normal rest), I'll try to fight it by not nodding off during the day - I remember that if I slept during the day, the occurance was almost certain to happen during the next night.
- Try to sleep in a temperature friendly room. I've heard people not able to sleep well in warmer rooms and vice versa.
- Being spiritual... depends from person to person. I, for one, do pray before going to sleep.
- Get some light, moderate exercise during the day. Melatonin or Vitamin D3 might help too, but Sun exposure should be moderated and not during peak hours (even during cloudy days, if weather permits, one can be exposed to direct natural light in a t-shirt or shorts, it might be enough).
If I'll recall other changes I've done in the past years due to SP I'll try to add them later on, I've added this link as a bookmark.

I have this sleep paralysis

I have this sleep paralysis since I was 15. I am 31 years old now and have been experiencing this SP for 4 or 5 times every night non-stop. I don't know how can I stop this from happening. I cant take this anymore. I don't know if it's because I'm very stressful lately. But what I do not understand why every time I have SP there is always have all kinds of evil presence around me, demons, scary loud voices, can't breathe, I couldn't speak, there's someone tickling all over my entire body to death, can't move. But then I can see the entire room. I can even see my cousin walk by, my husband beside laying besides me, the TV that was on and I am very aware of everything around me. I know for a fact tonight I will experienced this again. Like what I've said 4 or 5 times every night non stop. And I hate it. I hope somebody will help me:-( HELP ! !! !! ! !

SP Science or Spiritual

I guess it is much easier to explain that these occurrences are caused in the brain rather than some evil spirit. I have had what everyone calls SP since the age of 5 yr. old I am now 32 yr. old. I've managed to control and break the state of this so called "sleep Paralysis", by praying the "our father", I am not a religious fanatic, nor do I go to church, so can someone explain to me how I manage to get out of this state of SP by praying. I think there is much more to this, I do not tell myself that this is scientific and say, "oh well that explains it, it's all better". No, It is in my opinion that this is more spiritual then scientific. I have experienced other phenomenon other than this, out of body due to being in a coma for three days. I was lucky to have come back.

I HAVE IT TOO

Mine started at around age 12. I am now 40. Last year, I had the SP when I would awake from sleep...sometimes in the morning...sometimes in the middle of the night. Prior to that, it would only be at the onset of sleep. It usually happens when I am pretty tired and have stayed up late. Usually a few seconds before it happens, my head feels heavy and I can hear a sound in my head. It's like a pre-cursor to the episode. At times, I can abate it by getting up really quickly. Other times, I just cant.

Here are something to note:

1. Do you notice sleeping in a particular position brings it on? For me, it's lying flat on my back. Some research says lying on one's side lessens the possibility of it happening.

2. When the SP hits, try to relax and tell yourself it'll pass. For me, the more I fight it, the worse it is.

3. I've heard to try to move the small muscles in your body like your toes, fingers, tongue and eyes vs. the larger muscles to get it to stop.

4. Almost all of us have the experience of something "evil" or a "presence" in the room with us. It's a hallucination - it's not real, but it sure does feel as though it's real!

5. This is a physical/neurological condition.

6. Praying certainly helps.

7. Relax.

You're not alone. This thing just sucks.

I am having it too

Like everybody else in this blog, i have been experiencing this similar problem for the past 5 yrs....i was quite surprised to know that almost everybody who had SP, went thru the same kind of experience..like the darkness, someone after u......

But after having it for the past 5 yrs, i have kind of got used to it....i know now when it would start...and once i understand that it would happen immediately i get ready mentally for SP knowing that it wud last for some mins only...

Another thing quite like SP happens to me...it is just when i fall asleep, my body shakes violently and wake me up...that is also quite scary..

Is there any treatment or something?? Can it lead to death??

Its happening again

This feels good to hear that it has been experience by a lot of people, I thought it was only happening to me. I thought I had some kind of a weird disease that only happens when I am asleep. I had been experiencing this SP since when I was a kid and has frequently been back again. But last night was the worst, it happened 5-6 times and I was scared to go back to sleep because it was draining my enery to get out from SP. After SP episodes I would always feel sort of muddiness in the head or foggy thinking. I also suffer from anxiety due to stress and I think it is contributing to this SP. True, I sometimes would see weird black shadows or figures looking at me and sometimes sitting beside me. I would also pray to God to get me out and would try to move a body part just to awake myself, but sometimes its really a struggle especially that it goes from one episode to another eipsode. Sometimes I would feel that I couldn't come from it. But sometimes if I don't fight the SP, I would still come out it without even knowing it. So I guess its like a panic attack, only this time you are asleep. I too suffer panic attacks, it would happen to me in the middle of the night with an unexplained uncontrollable disturing thoughts. I am pretty sure that anxiety disorders and worrying too much really affects my sleep pattern and would cause my SP. But I still would recommend praying every night before you sleep to assure myself that everything will be ok. I am still searching for ways to eliminate this SP, maybe reducing stressful situations or changing your lifestyle too, or don't go to bed after eating a large meal or dinner. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

scared to sleep

Hi, so this has been happening to me for yrs it started after my boyfriend commited suicide.I still remember the first time it happened it was 3 days after his death, there was a women in a dress with a mist around her reading from a book in a different language standing over me , as she was reading I could see my tv playing the same show I was watching before I fell asleep after this took place I was never the same. Recently it's been happening more often maybe once or twice every other month since I moved into this house. When I lived at my fathers I don't think it happened more than twice over 5 yrs. Now I think it's getting worst I'm scared to sleep, lastweek I was asleep next thing I was paralyzed then felt myself sit up where I seen a black figure couldn't make out a face standing at the foot of my bed I screamed " What the F*&k do you want?" or atleast I thought I was screaming then I thought it said something then I was just sitting there it was gone and I was freaked out.Usually when it happens I would just feel paralyzed, can't speak and feel like someone or something is holding me down. Lastnight it happened again and it seems before I go to sleep if I think about it, it happens. I don't understand whats happening to me all these yrs I thought it was a evil spirit.

I am a 39 year old female

I am a 39 year old female and have some VERY frightning experiences during sleep. Well...I'm not asleep. I begin to fall asleep and suddenly feel as though an evil being is taking over me. I am completely awake but cannot move or speak. I try to scream out my boyfriends name who is laying beside me, but nothing comes out. I am able to move part of an arm or just my toes...so the first time it happened I moved my toes up against my boyfriend and tried digging my nails into his leg to wake him. He finnaly woke and shook me until I was able to come completely too. Needless to say I began to cry hysterically because it is the most frightning thing I have ever experienced in my life. I thought evil entities were after me, but after researching this I now know it is possible sleep paralysis. I am still unsure exactly what it is. My first experience was about 1 year ago. This has happened to me about 10 times since. I am a Christian woman and now sleep with a cross under my pillow. Just thought I would share my experience.

pressure in the head

i have head this sleep paralisis thing for about 5 years now actually i have been trying to figure out what was happening to me for five years until i found out about it online , sleep paralisis seems like the likely suspect in my case i have all the symptoms of it to the T , but i also have epilepsy wether the two conditons are related in anyway i dont no , but the thing that gets me about haveing sleep paralisis and a seziure disorder is telling the two apart , i have read all the syptoms of sleep paralisis but i didnt find anyone else that experineced an intense pressure on in there brain , every time i try to break free from the paralisis , if i try to move at all the prssure in my head gets unbearable , now adays the last few episodes i have had , it felt as if i was gonna stroke out , sleep paralisis is some bad ju ju , i have seen stuff my self had the haluciantions , heard the noises , i dont belive in sprits , or the church or god , but when your laying in your bed paralized at 3 am and the only thing you see is the shawdow of something that looks like a demaon in your room , then it disappears outside of my 4 story apartment bedroom window , why couldnt it have been an angel or a playboy bunny , i am not religious i dont have anything agaist church god , or ghost there not important to my everyday life , so its kinda strange for one to just show up in my room one night , it at natural , i can see how a person would take it as a sign , hell i prayed after that epidode got me a 3 foot cross too and put it under my bed

questions

hi. i was just curious. there are times i have been having a hard time waking up, where i know i am concious but i cannot move any part of my body, nor can i speak. it happened a number of times already, this morning was the most recent. i tried to search it on the internet and this is the closest i could find. am i experiencing sleep paralysis?
i went to bed around 2 in the morning. i couldn't sleep right away. i think it was a good 10 minutes where i just lay in my bed trying to fall asleep. when i had already fallen asleep, it wasn't long when i became concious. but i couldn't move and i couldn't speak either. i know i was concious because i was already aware of what was happening, i saw my sister come in of the room. i couldn't move at all. i tried to call out to her but i also had a hard time moving my mouth. i struggled to bite my tongue to get me to move because everytime this happens to me, this is what i do so i can move again. when i am finally able to move, i just go back to sleep. but after a while, it happens all over again. i think it happened four times. i finally stood up after my fourth struggle. i was so scared. there were even times i thought i was talking to my sister but when i asked her, she said we didn't. but i am sure i was concious, it's just that i couldn't move. so after i stood up, i tried to calm myself then went back to sleep again. then i was finally able to sleep well.is this sleep paralysis? what will happen if i give up? i mean, are there any dangers that might happen if i do not struggle to wake up?because there was one time when i almost gave up. and why does it occur repeatedly just like what happened this morning. please do answer my questions. if it is possible, please also email me more about sleep paralysis. i am interested about it. how i can prevent it from happening again. and can it cause death

creepy

i was asleep when i was awakend by unknwon weight on my chest. when i attempted to sit up i was immobiliszed and was told by an unknown male voice which said "your not getting up mother fucker". i felt like i was being choked, i panicked for awhile but then relaxed and was able to breath again, the figure squeezed on my throat harder and stopped my breathing all together, i attempted to shout but to no avail. during this experience which lasted one minute at the most was happening i was facing the wall and was unable too see what had a hold of me. before i was able to breath again i saw something bright from the corner of my eye leaving me and then returning before i was able to fully breath. thats my experience which happened on april 17, 2008 at around 8:30 in the morning iam not sure what it could be but after reading the article on sleep paralisis iam feeling more relaxed about the whole situation.......or ami???? iam 18 yo and single

Prayers During Sleep Paralysis

I am 14 years old and I have had SP (Sleep Paralysis) for over a year now and at a constant occurrence. About three times a week, sometimes more.
I usually experience SP, as stated by someone else on this page, when I fall asleep laying on my back, have had a stressful day, or fell asleep while worrying about something. Sometimes I have a nightmare before it happens, but usually I don't remember a thing. When I 'awake', I have the same symptoms as most others: I can't move, I can hardly breathe, I can't speak, and I have the over-whelming feeling of extreme terror and anxiety. However, I have never had any sort of hallucinations induced by the part of my brain that is still in the 'dream-state'. Nor have I heard any strange sounds or music like many others.
I didn't read every single post on this page, so I don't know if this is normal or not.
However, while I was reading this page and other pages, I noticed that many people said that they roused themselves from SP by praying. I would like to give my opinion on why this happens:
When you pray or engage in other thoughts that involves you using a good amount of mental activity to accomplish (such as remembering the order of the prehistoric time line, which is what I do), you are effectively 'waking up' your brain by using the self-induced mental stimulation caused by the high level of brain function it takes to think of a prayer or remember something complicated, and thus, freeing yourself from SP.
On a side note, there have also been cases where people freed themselves from SP by inducing an orgasm with their mind. But I personally wouldn't suggest putting it first on the list of 'How to Awake from Sleep Paralysis'. There are better (and not to mention easier and much cleaner ways) to induce a high level amount of though-process.

Please excuse me if I didn't use the correct terminology, it's quite difficult to explain this kind of thing and find the right words for it too.

sleep paralysis

My story... I was laying on my bed on my back looking at my celling for at least a few hours, completley bored out of my mind, the light was on and i was fully awake but i was getting pretty tired. I rolled my head over and looked at my wall then i closed my eyes and i think i started because i was suddley driving a car down a street and there was a street light and it was bright out. then it tured to night and i heard cars crashing, then people screaming, every once and a while one would blurt out one of my thoughts i couldnt say, when i would open my eyes i could look around my room. I then realized it was a dream but i couldn't move at all... i couldnt scream or anything. i actually liked it, it was so sureal almost like a bad acid trip... only had it a few times tho

I like Sleep Paralysis! My Story

I don't know why, but just the feeling that you're experiencing something out of the ordinary that not MANY others experience-- its really cool! Not to mention I love being scared, the rush of adrenaline, it was horrifying last year at 15 years old when I first experienced sleep paralysis, and I wanted it to happen again.
I had fallen asleep on my back, arms straight by my sides, legs straight as well.. It felt like someone was holding down my arms and legs when I woke up from the voices I was hearing. It sounded like 15 people having a conversation at once but I couldn't make out ANYTHING anyone was saying... It was horrifying but I felt as if they were talking to me so I tried to listen but they just got louder and louder, it lasted probably a minute and a half and then it was over. I thought I had experienced some phenomenon, some extraterrestrial or spiritual occurrence!
The next night I went to bed around the same time in the same position and it didn't happen, to my disappointment.
Then a few months ago it started happening to me because I felt myself unable to move (and of course I enjoyed this, wanting desperately to know what they were saying or what was going on), and then it suddenly stopped before anything came of it :(
Will it ever happen to me again? Will it be just a once a year occasion? ...or is it like other people are saying, that its surrounded by stress, etc... But I don't believe I was under so much stress when it happened to me :\

Dude, I totally hear you on

Dude, I totally hear you on that one. I had a really similar experience when I was in my teens, but without any voices. The weird thing is, as scientific as I try to be, I am insanely fearful of evil spirits, and I often have nightmares. So for me to not see them in this dream-like state in which most people claim to see them is an interesting note.

I just woke up and I couldn't move. Much like in most everyone else's situations, I was on my back. I felt like a rag doll. It's not that I couldn't move--it's that I couldn't even struggle to move. I figured that somehow, during the night, I had become paralyzed. That depressed me a bit, but after a while, I figured that, well, if I was going to be paralyzed forever, I might as well sleep. At least I could move in my dreams, eh?

Needless to say, I was not paralyzed forever, though it was a bit of an annoyance at the time. It's happened to me only a few times since, but those instances are few and far-between.

I, too, am wondering if there is a way to provoke this interesting phenomenon. It is quite a thrill.

My boyfriend and I have been

My boyfriend and I have been having SP ever since he moved in at my house into his own room my dad built for him. He would have pressure and he would try to move his arms and yell but the only thing he could do is get a squeak out of his mouth. "Help!" I would have to wake him up. Now since I have done that I NOW have these problems where I cannot go anywhere and actually sleep normal. I have woke up to hearing a beautiful piano playing and me saying "Is'nt that beautiful and right when I would say that, the music would stop and it would go to static and then there was a LOUD SCREAMM!! When I finally woke up, I had chill bumps all over my arms. It made me freak out. I couldn't sleep the rest of the night. One time before that I had an episode where I felt it coming and I let it go, just wondering what it would really do, and it started to choke me and I had to say Jesus, Jesus!! And it finally stopped. I'm just scared that It's gonna keep happening. My boyfriend has even spoke to the devil and knows what he looks like and sounds like. I can't move, can't open my eyes, can't feel...I can only HEAR!! SOO scary. I try to move and its like im under water.

Sleep Paralysis or Not

Sleep Paralysis or Not... I am now 21 years of age, and it seems to me that from what I've read it has become clear to me. (It just makes sense). When I was 7 years old I had an encounter with Sleep Paralysis, (I know that now) in this state of Rem Sleep I was indeed completely paralized, trying to scream, trying to move but I could not. It seemed to go on forever. As of to this day I do not now weather my eyes were open or closed at the time. I could see images of shadow spaces of people walking around in our living room. I tried not to turn my head but was unable to, I could hear whispers, but these whispers were not in english it sounded like some kind of indian tribe. I finally got enough strength to scream. My mother turns on the light. She said she tried to wake me, but I was still unable to lift one eyelid... I finaly woke, I looked above me and I saw my mother. To this day I have not idea why it happened. My mother said that on that night, when I finaly woke up, and looked up at her, I said "There comming, There on their way, There almost here!" I had sweat all over me, and was shivering. That was the my first time dealing with Sleep Paralysis. These events of Paralyses kept on happening throughout my life to this day at 21 years of age. Those who know me and have witnessed me in a Rem sleep state of full conchesness, all have said that I was murmuring words as if it were indian talk. There is still one thing aobut this subject that I do not understand, If I am indeed in a Rem like state, I have not yet found in answer to this. My question is , If my eyes are shut tight, Then why could I see my friends who were with me at the time? I asked them if my eyes were shut or open and every single one, at every time this happened all said that my eyelids were tightly shut. I cannot explain this but here it goes, During this state of Rem sleep where as I am fully conchess I could see my friends at the time who were with me when I awoke, and i explained what was happening and how I could see every thing they were doing all while my eyes were shut, and they were impressed but scared at the same time, and so was I.

I hate sleep paralysis :(

Dear Whoever
I hate when this occurs especially just after I got out of one. I am 17 and these are becoming more frequent since I have become older. I find myself fearing to stay up past 2:30am because if I am not sleep by then, I will have some servre sleep paralysis. When I was younger, I would get the audio and visual hallucinations but now they are just even scarier when nothing happens and I having an attack for more than 30s. You darn right it's hereditary considering my brother and sister gets them, not sure if they still do. I find that I will only get them if I have stayed up really late at night and very tired. I'd rather sleep walk and talk then to deal with this crap.

PS: I have had around 2-4 a day back to back since I have been going to bed at time like 2:00am and 4:00am,I need a break.
