Sleep Paralysis: Awake But Still Asleep

Hiro Takahashi

A person may wake up and find himself unable to move or speak as if he is frozen. He also may hear footsteps, see a ghost-like creature, or feel someone sitting on his chest. Throughout the history, people considered this phenomenon as work done by evil spirits. However, the modern science can explain the terrifying event as a Sleep Paralysis.

A Sleep Paralysis is possibly a hereditary disorder in which one experiences very frightening seconds or minutes of total body paralysis with little respiration and eye movements (1). A victim in this state feels awake, but he cannot move or speak (2). In addition to the immobility, the common symptoms include feeling choked or suffocated, hearing strange noises like footsteps and voices, seeing beings or dark shadows, and feeling an existance of someone in the room (1). Although these symptoms often direct the victims to believe in ghosts, mistransmission of neural signals in the brain causes Sleep Paralysis. When a person sleeps, his brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contraction (3). If he comes into consciousness before the brain sends signals to activate muscle contraction, he cannot move his body, and consequently, become "paralyzed"(2).

In order to understand how a body becomes paralyzed while the person is awake, it is necessary to understand sleep cycles. In a mammalian sleep, the brain activity undergoes two different states called non-REM (NREM) sleep and REM sleep, which differ very much from wakefulness (3). NREM and REM sleep alternate cyclically through the night; in human, about 80 minutes of NREM sleep starts a night of sleep, about 10 minutes of REM sleep follows, and this 90 minute cycle is repeated about 3 to 6 times during the night (3). During NREM sleep, a body produces few movement, but the body has capability of tossing about in bed and producing some other motor events, such as sleepwalking and sleeptalking (3). The cardiac-muscle contraction and breathing occur at a uniform rate, and the eyes move slowly (2). During REM sleep, on the other hand, heart rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure vary (3). The eyes move rapidly because most dreaming takes place in this period, and the sleeper probably "look" at the moving objects in a dream (2).

The brain's control over muscles during REM sleep points out that in this period, a body is normally in the state of total paralysis, called a "nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis" (3). Probably to prevent a person from "acting out" a dream, the brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contractions (2). Although some peripheral muscles, such as the muscles of the fingers and face, still twitch, the large skeletal muscles become relaxed, or "paralyzed" as a result (3). Some evidence supports that the motor paralysis of REM sleep protect against the acting out of one's dreams. A patient who suffers from rare syndrome called REM Sleep Behavior Disorder lacks the normal nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis, and he acts out violent dreams during REM sleep, often with injurious consequences (4). For example, a 60-year-old surgeon dreamt that he was attacked "by criminals, terrorists, and monsters who always tried to kill [him]" and fighting against them in the nightmare, he was actually punching and kicking his wife who slept in the same bed (4).

A nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis during REM sleep is accomplished actively by postsynaptic inhibition of motorneurons (3). Although the exact process of motor inhibition is not clear, some neurotransmitters and hormones are known to generate the many components of REM sleep. Aministering physostigmine, an inhibitor of the catabolic enzyme, increases the concentration of acetylcholine within the neurons in the pons, making it possible to artificially generate and start REM sleep in the middle of NREM sleep (3). Carbachol, the cholinergic agonist, produces a period of REM sleep in cat when directly injected into the pontine tegmentum (3). The hormone melatonin, a "master hormone" (5) that mainly controls circadian rhythms, also seems to play an important role in enhancing the REM state; the level of melatonin secretion by the pineal gland reaches its lowest during REM sleep (5). Such neurotransmitters and hormones probably activate or inhibit the activity of second messengers, which then activate or inhibit the third messengers, and so on till the last messenger inhibit the synaptic transmission or cause hyperpolarization of the motorneurons. And if, for some reason, the nervous or endocrine system continues to release the neural inhibitors, a person may experience Sleep Paralysis as he enters awakefully into or awakens directly from REM period (2).

While the modern neuroscience can describe the state of Sleep Paralysis as some errors of the neural transmission in the brain during REM sleep, a person who has seen or heard ghost-like figures/voices may easily believe that eveil spirits fully controlled his entire body. However, the images or noises, which the victim believes that he has seen or heard, are most likely hallucinations; and hallucinations, too, can result from the brain activity. In the 1960's, the Canadian neurologist W. Penfield introduced that electrical stimulation of the temporal lobe can cause the auditory hallucinations in the wake state (5). The buzzing or ringing sounds in the ears and other auditory hallucinations are closely associated with the activity of the auditory cortex and involves the temporal lobe (5). During the early period of sleep paralysis, the activity of the temporal lobe increases significantly, sometimes inducing hallucinatory sense (5). Similarly, the visual cortex generates internal visual stimuli, causing the victim to "see" terrifying figures during the paralysis (5).

How an episode of Sleep Paralysis induces visual or auditory hallucinations is still not clear, but it seems to have a significant relationship with anxiety (5). For anxiety is a neurocognitive event closely related to both psychological and physical processes, the extreme anxiety or panic may cause the release of several different signal molecules that trigger all kinds of physical events (5). A person experiencing Sleep Paralysis feels mortal fear or extreme panic, and hence, the brain generates and releases internal visual or auditory stimuli, producing hallucinations.

Also, hallucinations during Sleep Paralysis may happen, for one keeps dreaming even after some parts of his brain wakes up directly from REM sleep. Since the nervous and endocrine systems continue to release the neural inhibitors which sustain the paralysis, it may be possible that those systems keep releasing the neural activators that stimulate dreaming. Thus, a person continues to "see" the images and "hear" the noises produced in the dream that he has just had in REM sleep from which he has awaken.

Understanding more neural concepts of Sleep Paralysis, some researchers now hypothesize that a very rare condition called Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome (SUNDS) may closely relate to Sleep Paralysis (1). Upon the death, a SUNDS victim produces no body movement even though he experiences a myocardial infarction and strong breathing difficulties and should straggle in agony (5). The death may be caused by the extreme muscle atonia during Sleep Paralysis, which is so severe that even the cardiac muscles and the diaghragm paralyze (5).

Until I started researching on this subject, I have believed that the total paralysis of a body is due to an evil taking absolute control over the body. However, the interactions between neurons in the brain can explain this seemingly mysterious phenomenon in a scientific way. Although the explanation is not complete yet, for there are many unclear processes about Sleep Paralysis, the current hypothesis appears to reject the possibility of ghosts on this matter. Of course, it is impossible to completely disprove the existence of "spirits", "minds", or "God" affecting one's behavior. Nevertheless, like Sleep Paralysis and SUNDS, many or the mysterious conditions and behaviors which are only explained in supernatural terms probably result from brain.

I have been trying to figure out what was going on in my sleep untill i read this. Now i am happy to know what my body was expeiencing. It's quite scary your first couple experiences of sleep paralysis but now i'm gonna stay calm when it is happening to me and try to get my own understanding of the experience ... I have had sleep paralyisis at least once per month for the last 8 years. I am 29 as of this writing. I just had the experience about 1 hour ago and thus has caused me to do reasearch about it on the net. I noticed that many Dr.'s contribute this to anxiety, stress and other factors. My question is ... why is there always an evil presence in that concious yet body is still asleep phase? Today I heard a loud static sound, and opened my eyes to a spider crawling all over my arm. When I prayed to God, or said His name (Jehovah) the spider would start to disappear. I finally went thru my mental prayer when I awoke. This leads me to believe that it is more of a spiritual occurence, because I never have positive images while in this paralized state. I know there are many things in which our ancestors thought it was demonic rather than scientific, only to find there was a scientific explanation. However, I think this is different and cannot be simply written off as "scientific". There is not enough proof to show that it is scientific.

About a month ago I had another episode of sleep paralysis and I saw a small presence in the room with me. It was dark, and I could not see it's face (I am getting chills typing about it right now). My question is, why is there always an evil presence not only associated with my episodes, but so many others I have read about? ... Abel, 24 August 2006

i was thinking it is evil who do that during night but now i find out why. I am suffering from sleep paralyze possibly every nigh spicily when i have dinar ... Salah Nasser, 28 January 2007

I used to have this sleeping disorder when I was a child.  It has come back once or twice with adulthood, but otherwise, it is in the past.  I used to, with great effort, move my hand to my face and pull an eye open, which would wake me up, but sometimes the struggle was too much and I would go on into a deeper sleep.

Since the brain can do this to me, can it also cause me to get migraines just as I am about to wake up?

It seems, as I have discovered, if I get less than 4 hours sleep a night, I do not get migraines.  If I get 6 hours or more, it's about a 90% chance I will wake with a migraine.  Later in the day, I get an hour or two nap and that is the routine as it works.  Doctors just sort of treat the migraine and don't get into the sleep thing I have.  I take MaxAult for the migraines when they do get me.

I woke one time, and just as I woke, I felt this white-hot needle going into my head... bingo.  A migraine in 5 seconds.  That is how they can occur.  I wake with them otherwise.  I figure it my brain doing things it shouldn't.  I have a clean bill of health otherwise.

Thanks for your time.  Have a good day ... Jay, 11 February 2007

I have a question, and hope someone out there has an answer, it has been months and I have thus far failed to find one.  Has there ever been a record of anyone receiving the effects of sleep paralysis without having been asleep?  The reason I ask this, is a while ago, having not slept in a few hours, I was sitting at my computer, and it seemed to have happened to me. Within seconds I was too tired to hold up my own head, and my breathing got very difficult. Then I began to feel a sort of dizziness as my limbs lost feeling, and dropped to my side. after this, the dizziness turned to near blindness. I could see, but nothing would focus, and everything I tried to look at seemed to dart around like a mosquito. By this time I had no feeling in my entire body, could move nothing without quite a bit of concentration, and I could barely breath.  My mother heard me try and make out some kind of cry for help, and found me there spilled into my computer chair. She rolled me to my bed, and poured me into it. Within about 10-15 minutes I had regained everything I once had, but my sea legs did not ware off for another ten or so minutes.  I went to the emergency soon after. I had an E.K.G. and a C.A.T. scan, with no results, and I piss less in a week then the amount of blood they took that night. After basically telling me I was lying, the doctor told me that my symptoms did not fit anything at all.  What I do know, is I have been researching the issue ever since, and can only base my problem on Sleep Paralysis. All the symptoms match. And again, my question....Has there ever been a record of someone under the effects of sleep paralysis without ever having gone to sleep?  I hope you can shed some sort of light on this subject, as it,...well, it freaked me the hell out, and no one has been able to answer me!  Thank you for your time ... I used get this "evil paralysed me" feeling when i was paralysed and usually saw a ghost. i tried to shout or move but no sound escaped my mouth and couldn't move at all. it happened again yesterday and was almost convinced that ghosts/evil spirits were getting the better of me. But, me being a practical and logical guy, erjected this theory and started researching on this phenomenon. I came across this research paper on Sleep Paralysis. This greatly helped me in alleviating my fears. And next time i "see" a ghost during sleep paralyses, ill just laugh at it ;-)  Thanks for the research ... Siddarth, 10 December 2007

Hello.. I am a 23 year old female. I have had SP experiences which terrify me to the point that I am afraid to sleep. Last night was bad for me. I screamed and screamed and struggled with every thing in me to move and I couldn't. My screams were unheard and I woke up with excruiating neck and back pain. It feels as though u have no air and that the spirit of something evil is stripping you naked and taking your soul. Whenever I call upon Jesus.. It tends to disappear. I am too afraid to go to a dr because I do not want to become a psych pt. Do u all really believe this is a spritual thing?

Sleep paralysis is a

Sleep paralysis is a spiritual attack and must be addressed spiritually, not medically.

Ephesians 6:12 (New King James Version)
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[a] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

2 Corinthians 10:4 (New King James Version) For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,

spiritual help for a spiritual condition

I'm confident that I can help you, and yes, you are right about the response you would probably get from a doctor. Forget everything that medical science has to say about sleep paralysis. It is not a merely a physical condition brought about by exhaustion, sleep disorders, chemical imbalances, or any of the like. Sleep paralysis is very real and very terrifying condition. It's also a spiritual condition that must be addressed in a spiritual manner.

I'm an outreach ministry coordinator with my own personal experience with sleep paralysis. I can help you. I know exactly what you're dealing with, and I feel that I can direct you in this matter from a spiritual perspective. Please feel free to contact me through email, facebook, or myspace:

I'm not going to lie to you. This is not a quick fix. You're dealing with demonic spirits, and your level of commitment in regard to addressing this matter will determine the level of success or failure that you achieve.

I believe that God has called me to be a deliverance minister (someone who helps to free people from possession, oppression, and attacks of demonic spirits). My experience is minimal, but I'm very knowlegeable on the subject and have had already had a measure of success with it in the short time that I've been exposed to this type of ministry.

Sleep Paralysis

hmm people seem to suffer worse than i thought in duration of time i mean. I used to suffer this as a young child and stopped to like the age of 14. I thought i only used to get this until i looked more into it.

My experiences were whilst asleep and sometimes awake. I used to see what seemed to be ghostly images but the more common case i used to always experience was like an alien abduction, it was like i could see myself always getting pulled with my leggs along the floor in darkness thinking WTF! is happening. just before they would let go, i would awake and for some reason i could never move it is so wierd, i would want to cry out for help but i couldnt my mouth or body simply wouldnt move, and when this happened i used to hear some wierd noice, so hard to explain like when getting stunned by a stunned grenade that noice it just keeps going. this happended to me with other visions just awaking and paralysised

As i grew up i gt smarter and started to realise what a load of bull shit it was, listening to music helped. but the reason i dont get it anymore 18 now is that i always think of positive things and before i go sleep i try to imagine my life favourite fantasys that make me happy and this i guarantee will help u

If u believe that the evil cannot hurt u, u can hurt them this makes u stronger and u just need to know its all fake and ur brain realises this and it will go away forever

I have not had Sleep Paralysis for at least around 5years or more or so, i am surprised adults get this unless it started at adulthood, but if adults experiece this since child-hood then u must have a problem or bad phoebia or fear u need to overcome...

do not be weak!!!

I get the buzzing continuously .anyway thanks for your comment.

how 2 get rid of it .....here is the ANSWER frm ma experience

I had many sleep paralysis experiences but this one made me gain knowlege about how 2 get rid of it AND How to find what is exactly behind this.....

i m 18 yrs old MALE

24th JUNE 2010 about 3:oo clock in the afternoon

I was very tired and went to sleep .
JUST at the verge of sleeping or i Don't know maybe i was sleeping ...
Suddenly i was frozen -struck ... by a ...... (i don't know)like a black thing was making me unable to move...

it was stuck to my body...

I could see i was lying on my bed .. unmovable
This time i didn't try to call for help as i knew from my past experiences that that would be vain ...

I don't know whether my brain was working or not but it came from somewhere ..... inside or..... whatever that.. come on buddy ... show your strength and try to become movable.

i knew again that this trial would again b in vain from my past experiences

BUT.....still i tried ,,tried and tried a lot and this time i couldn't believe what i was seeing ... was me myself going away from my own body...

it was like a duplicate , replica ..(may be my soul).. of me coming out of my own corpse .....

i realized that the strength which i used to become movable was actually utilized to come out of my own body ...

i could see from the eyes of my replica that i was lying on my bed unmovable just like a dead body ....

when only my legs were remained to come out of my corpse ..

JUST THEN.....

A FORCE higher in strenght than the strenght of the force with which i was trying to come out of my own body .. pushed me back to my unmoveable body ..

At that instant i heard the sound of moving of my bed (i lost my strength and became calm) and i woke up or i should say came to full consciousness ...

U may think that i must have become afraid that i would have thought that i may die if whole of my body come out of my own body and must have given up .....

NO but

the truth is there was surely somebody who pushed me back into my own body....

What i learned from my experience is ....

1. There is definitely somebody who freezes you
2. Scientific description about Sleep Paralysis has no proof
3. If u wanna get rid of SP whenever it come just be calm and make your body very loose

and if u wanna find what is that black thing sitting on your chest or standing in your room ...

fight with your whole strength like i did

...if it comes again to me than that time i 'll try my best to find what is actually behind SP...

...FOR THOSE who wanna try this ....

MAKE yourself very tired watch any movie and go to sleep .. this i am saying from my experiences

I am an INDIAN and in indian language(i.e. HINDI) SLEEP PARALYSIS is known as PARA

i will comment again as soon as my next experience come

HOPE THIS TIME I COME WITH THE IDENTITY OF BLACK THING........

maya's picture

What you described fits what

What you described fits what my past experiences. Although I don't see a black thing.... I feel there is a force of power over me and the fear just grows in me as in something is closing in on me. For me during this time the only way to control the fear is by asking God to protect me and since this happened to me tons of time I tell myself to wake up before it becomes worse. I used to get this a lot during childhood.I purposely wanted to have it at times so I can defeat it...I used to focus on the sound of ac/fan and stare into a small red light in the room and keep my eye open and not think of anything but that scary feeling I get until I sleep...then it occurs. At times it comes in 3cycles..I think I am awake but I am note. I screamed and told myself this is a dream and I have control of it. This helped me overcome it for a long time...but it reoccurred few times as an adult...I just experienced SP right now...There was even a time where I saw grandfather w/red eyes standing beside my bed and my eyes were open and I tried to wake my mom and that image vanished. My parents told me to pray so it wont happen again and I am glad it has not. I had many scary dreams... I just want to put a stop to it.

My mother gets alot of scary dreams too. She sees people trying to hold her down or come close to her etc. She sleeps with a bible and it still happens to her. She screams to be left alone and wakes up. Sometimes she told me that she saw them while she is half asleep or waking up.

I hope this makes sense..Im very sleepy.. GN

Your "Replica" self explained - THIS IS EXCITING

You said, you see yourself "floating" out of your body, well I'm going to sy you wil lbe extremely excited to hear this. NO your mind was NOT playing games on you, it was not a dream, what happened was you had induced an OBE (out-of-body experience). OBE's happened when the body tends to become inactive while the concious mind is active, and thus leaves your body for a period of time, commonly known as "astral projection". Astral projection is extremely POPULAR with many nuero-phsycologists and Occult-practitioners, and many other spiritual people. "BUT.....still i tried ,,tried and tried a lot and this time i couldn't believe what i was seeing ... was me myself going away from my own body...

it was like a duplicate , replica ..(may be my soul).. of me coming out of my own corpse .....

i realized that the strength which i used to become movable was actually utilized to come out of my own body ...

i could see from the eyes of my replica that i was lying on my bed unmovable just like a dead body ....

when only my legs were remained to come out of my corpse .."

you beautifully described it RIGHT THERE.
if one were to look at that, they wouldn't even have to read further to know that astral projection has occured. astral projection can be fun, since your concious mind travels - you can go ANYWHERE without people knowing. OBE's, NDE's and astral projection are NOT FICTITIOUS ideas or superstitions, they ARE scientifically proven.

you see in order for astral projection, you have to be completely aware while your phsycal body is a "asleep". once you begin
to push your conciousness, you can start lifting your astral body and seperate. its very hard to start out with, but youll get the hang of it. SOMEWHAT you fulfilled ALL the steps of successful astral projection without EVEN knowing it. i'm guessing you were probably in the "seperation" process.

NO you dont have to be special to astral project, ANYBODY can do it. astral projection happens to EVERYBODY, they dont even know it and will usually refer to it as a "dream". its very similar to lucid dreaming.

YOUR EXPERIENCE of seeing your "replica" is one of the most COMMON astral projection experiences told out there. when your astral body seperates, you can turn around and see yourself. MANY PEOPLE fear astral projection to the fact theyre going through walls and such stuff, they think theyre dead. YOU COULD GONE FURTHER floated around in your room or in the astral planes
(Occult-practitioners refer to it as the spirit world), YOU WILL RETURN. YOU WILL NEVER GET LOST. ive heard stories of people who NEVER WANT to come back after visiting some georgious place, but they STILL come back.

THERE ARE THOUSANDS AND MILLIONS of books and internet articles on astral projection.
astral/etheric projecion can be achieved through meditation AS WELL.

many spiritual teachers like Jesus Christ, Muhammad, Buddha - practiced meditation and astral projection. you can ALSO meet
Jesus Christ in the astral realm and let him guide you. forget what those
Christians say, just let Jesus Christ the man himself guide you, he is typically known as "Sananda Esu Immanuel" in the astral realm.

with astral projection you can also talk to deceased ones.

keep a positive mind while astral projecting. FORGET WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT IT BEING "SCARY" or "UNSAFE" OBE's and astral projections are completely safe and harmless and you can return ANYTIME.

EVERYBODY ancient peoples,
Budddhists, Hindus, Wiccans, all other
spiritual and Occult-peoples practice it.

i also know many Muslims and Christians who astral project.
Jesus Christ crucified himself to astral project - to infinity.

science does NOT go against OBE's; OBE's are scientifically proven to work. you are "pusing" your conciousness out of your body. yes-you can travel to the Moon which may sound like extreme horse shit right now, but its true. the possibilities are endless.

GOOD LUCK!

Hi. Just wondering. If

Hi. Just wondering. If someone does an OBE... what happens if someone tries to wake you up while your conciousness is out travelling and your body is practically out?

I agree with your tips

You are right about relaxing whenever experiencing SP. There's no use of struggling since it's just some kind of hallucination. Besides I noticed that the more you struggle the more intense thing will happen to you. I figured it out coz I experienced SP many times. And always think positive especially before going to sleep, so you won't attract negative entities. I also noticed that when I am depress I am more prone in SP.

What happened to me

Hi Folks,

I have experienced this phenomena once and it was terrifying. I was asleep whilst house-sitting my mother’s place. It was pitch black in my room and I remember vividly, waking up and not being able to move a muscle in my body, but seeing this large white object in top right-hand corner of my small room. I was spread-eagle on the bed and it seemed so close...me lying their unable to move and staring at this white thing in my pitch black room. I focused on moving my little finger for about 20 seconds and suddenly my whole body just relaxed. This object in the top corner of the room seemed so close that from by bed I was reaching out trying to touch it. After about 5 seconds of trying to touch it, I dashed for the light switch by the door and turned it on. Immediately the object vanished, but I was so scared. This is the single most frightening thing that has occurred to me in 35 years. I hope it never happens again.

NO WAY

hi, i was shocked to see that some of you guys had my same experience.. but if first i was scared to death now i now how to get through it. i mean... i try to...
sorry for my english... i'm italian i'll try my best.
Listen: first nightmares i had were very confusing: couldn't wake up completely, couldn move and feeling a evil presence close to me breathing very hard.
So as soon i started to recognize the situation.. as soon as i felt the paralisis i used to start panicing.. and you know what? i started seeing what i call the devil like i see it in movies: one time i was sleeping next to my bestfriend. nothing wrong until i felt paralized.. i started hearing the breath.. and than i tried to move but couldnt.. so.. i think i went back to the dream (thinking i was awake) because i finally moved and turned to my friends body to check on her.. if everything was right and she opened her eyes and moved up with her back till she ended seated with her legs still straight.. and she started saying some words in a language i coulnd reconize. i got shocked so much that i finally woke up!!!!
so... i was thinking... oh my god i had a evil experience and they're tring to tell me something?? then i started thinking that maybe... sometimes i get into that point of the dream when i'm awake but still sleeping.. and i start conditioning myself of what i want...
what i think is that i see bad things because i panic.. in some way i want to see bad stuff happening and (because i am in a middle of a day dream) i can! so .. after realizing this.. i started having the same paralisis sometimes... but now.. i see other kinds of stuff not scary! like my mom speaking at the phone next to me (so real but then i wake up and she ain't there!!)
so... try to be as calm as you can by thinking its just you!
even the thing of the breath (for those who feel someone breathing close) it's just yourself. i think you hear yourself's breath but because you are kinda detached from your body cuz you are in a daydream.. you don't recon it and you feel like is someone else! also if you feel you are having someone sitting on top of you... same story.. its the weight of your heavy body. it's like your mind is tring to escape for a last minute from your body while you.. actually want to biologically wake up!
and then... i figure out that evil or good is just a way we look at things.. and the evil ghosts arent what we see on tv... so its just our imagination of evil.
church... god...devil.... everything we believe.. is just o-u-r way of believing. so don't misinterprate our mind because our imagination and trust can lead us everywere even were we don't want to go!
so say: the best thing the devil ever made was make believe that he doesn't exist. this thing scares me... but actually... is just a human thought! and i don't trust people!!!!
take care and think positive... we watch too much tv and follow bad examples..your life is what you want it to be!

I just wanna share my "bangungot".

I am 20 year old and I just wanna share.

I usually control my dreams. I know when I'm in my dream state so when a freaking army of bones trying to get me I just have to closed my eyes and think "hey i know i can fly and i can fight back-- I have plasma coming out of my hands-- i can do what martial artist do hahaha." It's a dream - my dream- my brains therefore I have the power to control it.

But after a series of dreams just before i wake up-- I do have SP or what we call "bangungot" in our country. The thing with SP no matter how hard I try to control it my brains doesn't work. Since i had multiple SP in my life I know when it's starting.

In my SP-- I'm in the same room, lying in my bed the same position right before i fell asleep everything is the same . Everything looks real as if I'm awake but I can not move my body and there is an entity on top of me. "It" is holding me flat on my bed. I tried to scream so loud but the best thing i can do was whisper harsh because "It" is choking me. I can not even turn my body to the side.

Every time that happens I closed my eyes and I fight back and wished please wake up! wake up! then i opened my eyes finding myself still in the state of SP. I feel like trapped.

But one time I said to myself I'm gonna face my fear. I was in my SP state when i said to myself "I can control my dreams, why can't I control this one (SP state)?" So I fought back and reached at "It's" head. I couldn't see "it" but i touched "it's head" or that's what I thought it was--- and I was scared and laughing because for that time i did feel this is my body I am in control. This maybe a dream or some unexplainable situation but hey I can fight back.

Another time the same entity was trying to hold me in the bed then something from my right side bite my right hand and pull me over to the right side then i woke up. I thought about it and figure out it must have been a dog. I remember me and my brother buried our deceased loved dogs in the same direction that pull came from. Realizing my dogs are still protecting me.

One time in my SP state . Still the same room, same body position only that there were 3-5 naked babies sleeping beside me. Their head lying on my legs, arms or just beside me. I couldn't move because I am scared of "evil babies" funny right? but yeah I am so freaking scared of evil babies.

When I wake up I feel very exhausted and sometimes still sleepy like it's inviting me to go back to sleep. Every time I fell asleep after an SP is another SP. Freaking ridiculous!

I opened this up with my friend who see spirit creatures. She said to me when we dream our spirit/soul (sorry i kinda forgot) travels that's why we have several dreams. She also said we have 7 (not sure) spirits/soul and when it's time to wake up they return to our body and SP/bangungot is an entity who would not let all our spirit come back so "It" hold us and tries to steal us from waking up.

Also I opened this SP topic with my older brother who is a christian and he said to me. Once they were on a taping inside a haunted house. He have the same experience He was very tired and fell asleep in the sofa. . He can't move and he see's this black entity choking him. He was scared and he just said "In Jesus name I rebuked you" and the entity disappeared.

loss of controlling fear re. SP.

Experiencing sleep paralysis/night terrors for more than 10 yrs, after the initial terror i'd realise wat was happening & 'pull ' myself out of it . But the last 1 i had was different & the terror & disgust i experienced was overwhelming & i had no control at all. A different level of SP? or my subconscience ramping up to a higher level of f***ed-up ness?

listen to music, it will solve....

Thanks for the article and I'm glad to understand better. I had similar experiences but it wasn't that scary as seeing flying creatures. It happens mostly when I'm too tired. I noticed that it doesn't happen when I take earphone and listen to music during sleep. I was wondering if that was the reason but still have no idea. Maybe it does cause some problem to listen to music during sleep but it always prevent this sleep paralysis....I'll be glad if it helps to others who are in very serious situation. but don't forget it may not good idea to always take earphone...

It's NOT SCIENCE! My Testimony,Tips, and Cure

All Scientest like to call this a "Sleeping Disrder" when in fact it's not. Its very much indeed a battle, not of the physical being but of the spirit. In other words evil vs good Read on..

*My Testimony*
I was about 16 or 17 when this first happened to me. I thought it was just a nightmare or that i was extremley tired and couldnt awake, but as time progressed it got worse and worse and worse. It started out with me just being paralyzed and not being able to move anything except my eyes i was fully awake but in reality i was asleep. It was as if i was in some kind of trance or perhaps ..another dimension? soon it got to a point where i could literatly feel an evil prescense breathing on my neck and laying completley on my body making my heart rate slow down and harder to breath. I also began to start hearing them. The chitty chattering and them laughing at my agony and pain. One thing led to another i then began to start "seeing them" It would always be 3 very tall black shadowy figures 2 standing by my window and 1 sitting at the foot of my bed. I would be screaming at the top of my lungs only to never be heard because i never was "physically" screaming to begin with. I would wake up with scratches on my body scratches that I DID NOT PUT THERE. Its similar to an outer body experience. Techniqually when your able to "see with your eyes closed" your actually seeing the spiritual world AKA another dimension. In other words welcome to their territory.

*TIPS*
I tried staying awake for days, i tried sleeping in other rooms, i tried having someone wake me, i tried cutting myself, I cried my eyes out, i tried sleeping with the bible - none of this works. I suggest you try to stay as calm as possible because your very much in danger of taking a heart attack I almost did once. It defenitly would be a good idea to pray before you sleep so that you can have God on your side during your battle to awake. When these things happen i know you cant physically speak to call Jesus' name because if you did it wold stop automatically but i have found that yelling it inside the paralysis gets you out of it quicker than normal. Avoid sleeping laying on your stomach because then you will REALLY feel like your suffocating once the paralysis hits you.
Try not to show fear at all stay as strong as possible as hard as it may be because "it" feeds off of ones distress.

*CURE*
Jesus Christ is the only way
If your not religious Im sorry but ths is the only thing that caused my SP to stop I have been free ever since and i sleep in peace for 2 years so far. I've been through the worse of SP but now Ive been through Victory with Christ and conquered these demons. I suffered and waitied for the first day of the first month of the Atonement and brought my prayer request unto God begging him to deliver me.

*WHAT IS THE ATONEMENT?*
The fifth Holy Feast Day is the Day of Atonement (Lev.23:27-32). It is a Holy Day of humble prayer and fasting to help us draw nearer to God and to help us repel Satan’s influence (Matt.4:1-11, Matt.17:18-21). We enhance our relationship with God as we draw nearer to Him in humble appreciation for His ATONEMENT (James 4:6-10)! Just like the Jerusalem Church of God, we also fast on the Holy Day of Atonement (Acts.27:9). The Day of Atonement pictures the atoning
sacrifice of the life of Christ for the sins of mankind. The Day pictures the atoning sacrifice of the Lamb of God to restore God’s people to Him; and it pictures the banishing of Satan for 1000 years (Lev.16:9-31, Rev.20:3). Whereas the Passover begins God’s plan of merciful salvation, Atonement is its fulfillment, since Atonement pictures real unity with God where (AT-ONEMENT)
with Him is made complete. When one understands God’s Feast of Atonement, one does not wonder why the New Testament Church of God, like the righteous in Israel, kept Atonement as such a sacred day. Truly it is a fitting reflection or shadow of the Body of our Lord being sacrificed for the atonement of all mankind as well as the banishing of the great deceiver, Satan. Once Atonement is fulfilled, world peace and Jubilee (Lev 25:9-10) will begin.

The purifying flame of God's atonement
Cleanse me of all my iniquities and purge me of all my sins, Oh Lord.

Wash me and my soul will be whiter than fresh fallen snow; my heart will sparkle like a pure and flawless precious gemstone, Oh God.

Brethren, when our hearts have been thoroughly purged from all our iniquities, then our eyes will be opened, and we will be inundated and surrounded by visions and revelations of both God and His Heavenly Abode.

Let us than offer up both our heart and our soul to the purifying flame of God's atonement, burning away our old selfish life and be born anew, fresh and holy, of God. Amen!

sorry for replying to you

sorry for replying to you only, you are not the only one i wolud like to write to.. but something really gets out of my nerves when i hear that most of you guys are saying that "the solution is always God". i will try to explain my self:
i completely respect your trust in God, i'm not here to tell you what i think about cristianism or other religion cuz you might feel offended and this is not my wish..i respect who believe in something.. whatever it is.
so i just want to ask you:
why you think that this SP is somehow related to your God? isn't this too much about you?
I mean... if you read my experience (title No Way) you'll understand.
i do believe in good and evil .. but this is so far away from religion!
people who don't believe in God should convert into your cristianity stuff to avoid SP?
please.. be honest...
i believe that if you feel confortable and released by your problems by believing in something or praying to someone... than good for you! wheather if is religion or anything else.
but don't be to squared and don't give useless advice to sceptic people who soffer this case of psychological fear (call it sp). the religion is not the way if you don't believe in it!
the problem has to be solved inside yourself, not by the hand of some God we don't know if exist.
i'm so happy (and kinda gelous) for you that can solve the sp by praying. not my case... i will be hypocrit if i start praying only cuz i need help.
i honestly believe that we make our own fear... so we can also make our own solution to it... yours is God cuz you fear the Devil
someone else fear ghosts.. they have to find theyr own solution... being brave.. i don't know...
i still have to find out what i fear... maybe its the devil too... but i don't believe in cristianity so the devil to me must something else i can determine yet!
i think SP is when you let your emotions and fear come out.. no religion involved.
thanks for listening, take care

Each to their own

Christians have been getting on people's nerves since Jesus came into the world. I am a Christian and I can't help but tell my opinion of what I think or what works for me. I would like to know why God offends so many people? When people say they don't beleive in God it doesn't bother me. As long as you don't mess with my freedom of speech or right to worship God, I don't have any problems. These people on here that are talking about God are talking to us other Christians on here. When Atheist talk about SP I read it and go on. Nothing to get upset over. I am not offened by what you wrote, just thought I would tell how I see it.

My Reply to "sceptic" one

Well, you... sceptic one , that you think this is far from religious beliefs, I think you unknowingly close but far from that, reason that God does exist , and that has nothing to do with religion, however, you contradict yourself way to far by admiting you have knowledge of "good" and "evil" , but you don't think God exists??? , so, what is good? or evil? to your so called knowledge? ... anyways , i aint keep on with this , because is gonna end up offensively, which isn't this about. The main thing is that most or all of the people (including myself) when experience or experienced SP, at the mentioning of God's name Jehova, the black shadow , ghost or whatever it is , simply vanishes away at the recalling of God!! isnt that trivial? maybe to you it is , it takes more than being selfish in your believes and knowledge of your own good and evil(if you really want to understand the difference) to find an answer within yourself and believe more in a more helpful way.

SP

Just last week I had my first episode. It was the afternoon and I had taken a nap, laying on my back, and when I awoke I couldn't move. I've also become a bit of a drinker this last year, mostly because it helped my anxiety which I developed the year before that. Anyways, upon waking up, I felt this tingling sensation like a chill up the spine, but it started at my heart then consumed my body 'till I had goosebumps everywhere. It also felt like my heart was gonna stop or something, like it was being squeezed or someone was sitting on my chest. Basically a very typical SP episode, not accompanied by any hallucinations.

Though last night I had yet another episode, but it was very different from my last one... Throughout the day i was trying to sleep because I had gotten little sleep the night before from being at the bar playing a gig with my band and having to get up early the next morning. Anyways, I couldn't get to sleep because right before I'd go into dreamland, I'd get this overwhelming shooting sensation of anxiety, which to me feels kinda like butterflies in the stomach and my heart being squeezed. It sucked because it feels to me like I'm on the verge of death, so the 7 or 8 times this happened, I'd shoot up from the recliner and start pacing around just to make sure I was fine. Eventually I gave up on the afternoon nap and carried on with my day.

but later that night I tried falling asleep, with a similar sensation of anxiety before sleeping, but it was much weaker and I was able to shake it off. Now this is where it gets pretty weird... Ok, so this may or may not have any relevance, but i could see it being relevant to the events which proceeded from either a psychological or spiritual perspective. So anyways, I was wringing out the ol' bone to some porn before going to sleep, because it helps relax me more before sleeping. Don't you judge me, it's not like you've never done it. Anywho, i fall asleep shortly thereafter and maybe an hour or two goes by then all of a sudden I awake with my right buttock being squeezed really hard and then I feel a body wrap around me squeezing me tightly. Here's something else that's weird, I was sleeping one my left side because I can't sleep on my right as a result of having my shoulder dislocated about 2 weeks ago and I specifically made it a point to sleep on my side and on my back or face cuz I didn't want to experience SP again. Damnit.

Anyways, I wasn't really scared, just sorta "Ahh, God damnit please be a girl and not my stupid brother being a douche bag" and then... I started to be vigorously shook back and forth, as if I was being humped. Pretty soon I came to and realized nobody was there, and I wondered if it was an earthquake cuz the bed was still shaking for a good 30 seconds, or perhaps it was a seizure... i'm not sure, but alas... it wasn't an earthquake as nobody stirred or noticed a thing and there was no reports about one happening. Afterwards I had to have a smoke not because I was deathly terrified or anything like that, no, but because that was perhaps the best demon sex I've ever had. lol... Nah, all kidding aside though, that's gonna scar me for the rest of my life probably.

A slightly different experience....

OK. Interesting posts and like wise the article itself. I really hope that this is an SP issue because I'd hate to think that my own experience was even close to an actual scary a$$ demon being in my presence...

My tale is somewhat different from the majority in some of the finer points which is why I'm still sceptical - To paint the picture, I was living in a house in England a couple years back, (renting a room in a mansion to be specific) the house was around 300 years old....anyway, one night I woke to the sound of a very loud rustling, like plastic bags being shaken with vigour. I was instantly aware that there was something in my room and although I was awake I couldn't actually bring myself to open my eyes because I was petrified as to what was paying me a midnight call. When I say I couldn't bring myself to open my eyes, it wasn't that I could not, it was that I was not willing to for fear of what I might see. Along with the rustling came a deep demonic voice saying "wake up", "wake up".

The hairs on the back of my neck stood up and I then felt the figure directly infront of my face, breathing heavily, it said "you're breath stinks", which I can't really argue about because I do smoke 20 a day and probably had some dog breath going on....

And with that the room was empty and I convinced myslf to return to sleep and not open my eyes. Needless to say, the next day I was FREAKED! I was thinking about it all day at work and couldn't get my head around it. Returning home that night, I was bricking it going back to my room and stood looking around the room prior to entering it fully.

Anyway, totally isolated incident. Never had this happen before and never had it happen again. The rustling I described....I later realised I had stashed a few plastic bags behind my couch when I moved in.

Riddle me that?

(No jesus freak replies please)

SP .... or NOT?

My ex-husband had experiences like those listed here ... he would be scared to death to be alone at night sometimes. He said "something" would sit on his chest and he couldn't breathe or move. He said it had red, beady eyes (kind of glowed), and smelled like sulfur every time it appeared. I thought he was crazy or schizophrenic. But he was completely normal otherwise, so I don't see how that could have been. In the years that followed, he said they (yes, eventually he said more than one would appear) started talking to him, and whenever they did, it was usually blasphemous or accusatory - negative, trying to tell him he was going to die, etc.

Once in awhile he would call me to the room he was in and ask me if I "saw them." I'd always have to reply, "No," of course, because I never did. One time he had me look out the window at the gables on our house, and asked me if I saw them sitting there. And he added that they "always flee the room" when I came in. He told me one night that he was pissed off because they always left when he tried to show them to me, so he asked them why they always ran off and did not show themselves to me and "prove" to me that they existed, and they told him something to this effect: "don't you know what His stupid Word says? You know we can't be in the same room where Light is." Now, that got my curiosity up. He was not drunk or drinking, and was clearly in his right mind. I knew in my heart he was not a crazy person.

However, I WAS a church-goer who regularly said her prayers to God. I did not know anything about the "demonic" world, though. And you better believe I started reading up on it and asking questions about it. Especially after my husband told me that he remembered "strange" incidents happening when he lived with his grandmother in Mexico (he was Mexican, and I say "was" because he is now deceased), incidents like his grandmother throwing "holy water" at the walls of the house, and they (the walls) would scream. I still never found out what that was all about. All I know is his grandmother was "spiritual," but in what way, I do not know (like, they were Catholic, but you know how some South American cultures mix things in with "Christian" religions, like vodoo or black magic?) That could have been the case, but I do not know.

I do know that one book I read stated that "when demons materialize, the smell of sulfur comes with them." Now, there was NO WAY that either my husband or myself would have known such a thing years before, when he first started telling me that "they always smell like sulfur." Prior to some years after we got married, he was not even a church-goer, and knew practically nothing about God or religion, let alone demons and the demonic world. He only lived with his grandmother in Mexico until he was about 5 years old, so I highly doubt he "remembered" any specifics about whatever it was she was involved with (even if it was mere Christianity, and nothing at all to do with strange religions ... we just don't know). Sure, there could be things that were left in his subconscious memories, but nothing that would have caused him to "know" such things now.

We would "separate" on occasion, and he would leave and go back to his family across the country. He would call me, terrified, telling me that "those things" were appearing to him and talking to him again, telling him that if he came back to me, they would kill him, or he would die, etc.... So it does strike me as odd that he did die way before his time ... at age 39.

Was "sleep paralysis" the cause in my ex's case?? I tend to think not. And I read with REAL interest, these other stories that people are writing here, about how they "see" and "hear" and "feel" things while they are "paralyzed" and "sleeping." I wholly believe in another side to the spiritual world, now, and realize the "power" I have in Jesus, and in "being in the Light, as He is in the Light."

explain what the evil spirits are getting out of it

What do the evil spirits get out of messing with us at night? If we are truely Christians and they scare us to death, then we go to Heaven and they lose. What are they doing to us and why? I am on the fence, I don't know if it is demons or not. I believe that there are demons but I don't understand why they are mesing with us in this way. What do they get out of it.... a good laugh? It doesn't weaken my faith in God, it only makes me cling to him more. Maybe they want you to believe you are crazy. They don't only just mess with Christins. Would love to for someone to explain this to me if they can. Just very curious.

Evil spirits try to weaken

Evil spirits try to weaken your faith, make you affraid - tear you away from the God you love. And sometimes they just like to screw around. A friend at church told me they enjoy tormenting others,

just have faith. Even if there ARE scientific explanations, there is the chance that they aren't spot on right?

I remember praying in my first ever SP incident. Nothing happened, but it was comforting - knowing that God loves me and won't allow evil to harm me,

How did your husband die?

How did your husband die?

Serendip Visitor's picture

He died from some type of

He died from some type of cryptococcal pneumonia. He waited too long before seeking medical attention after he got the "flu" or something. By the time he went to the E.R., the had to almost immediately put him on a respirator. He was in the hospital in and out of consciousness for 2-3 weeks, as they tested him for everything (hepatitis, HIV, etc... which all came back negative) ... and stuffed him full of every antibiotic they could think of, but he finally succumbed to his illness.

I do find it strange that all the males of his household, except for one, have died an early death. And all different, too ... one died at age 22 from a gang-related drive-by shooting that riddled him full of holes. Another died at age 28 of AIDS. Two toddler/infants died also ... but that was many years before I met him, and I only know the story of one of them ... he was fed "bad milk" and got sick and died. His stepfather died fairly young from cancer. It's just very weird.

But thank you for asking.

I've noticed a few things about my frequent experiences. Generally, all of the following are present when I have an episode:

1. I was extrememly exhausted when I went to sleep.

2. I have fallen asleep in a semi-immobilizing position or uncomfortable position, such as with one hand stuck under my head, or while lying on my stomach with my arms pinned underneath me.

3. It generally happens when I have woken once and gone back to sleep, or shortly after falling alseep while taking a mid-day nap.

I have noticed that that the only time I feel suffocated is when I truly am--my face is stuffed down into the pilow or something of the sort. This has happened to me regularly for years, so I've developed a variety of techniques to deal with it. I've been able to wake myself up by either focusing very specifically on moving just one hand or arm, which is usually sucessfull after about 1 or 2 minutes. I have also been able to increase my heart-rate, with less consistent success.

Often, I just find elect to use it as a conduit for lucid dreaming, which is cool; unless of course it's one of the time I feel like I can't breath well!

First few experiences were definately frightening, but If you can quickely identify your condition when it's happening and relax, it just becomes an annoying quirk.

Hi pilot

If only it were that easy, for me its the loud buzzing noise , like when your ears ring from loud music
you get the buzz, followed by the presence of someone invading your space on the bed... hugging you, its heavy uninviting
with that buzzing in tow, you can't move , except your eyes, you can blink, but you can't make a sound, hard to shake off , managed it once in 20years last year I was f...ing and blinding at this presence what ever it is to naffing let me go and it did but It came back the following morning and stayed lasted longer.

Anyway I have a bible under my pillow and i have positive thoughts all day (believe me thats hard going) an its been 9weeks with nothing happening.

Wow, this describes exactly

Wow, this describes exactly what happens to me. I'm 21 yrs old and have been experiencing this since quite some time now. At the beginning I didn't think it could be something spiritual since it happened at day while I was around people. I used to sleep in the car while my dad drove and I remember I could hear the radio, hear everything but couldn't move nor talk to him. At the university I used to sleep like for ten minutes before my morning class started but again I would fall into this weird zone where I could listen people around me but couldn't wake up even though I wanted.

Recently I have been experiencing it but in my night sleep. I feel as if the pressure in the room suddenly increases and begins compressing my chest, my heart begins pumping faster and faster; I feel like I could die of a heart attack right there, I cannot speak...To wake from it I look to move a finger or a toe and usually after various attempts I do it. It is really an unpleasant experience.
I don't think is something spiritual or at least I don't want to because if that's the case then it would make it a lot worse.

Hi Victoria

Its really one of the most strangest experiences I've ever had to deal with and I can honestly say I'm not religeous in any shape or form, but every now and then I have a quick read of the bible a few lines before I sleep and I've been ok, I also keep the bible under my pillow.

But let me tell you if it falls of my bed during the night I get SP And the experience will be really bad when it comes, .
For me the bible kind of protects I guess , it's worth giving it a try and it beats that almost heart attack sensation I know so well.
good luck all the best
