Mifepristone..."The Abortion Pill": The Facts

Sujatha Sebastian

On September 28, 2000 the Food and Drug Administration after several years of research approved Mifepristone, better known as the "abortion pill", for distribution in the United States. The FDA's decision will have a definite impact on women's health care in the United States. There will be social and medical repercussions. The drug has caused controversy not only in antiabortion groups, but in Pro-Choice groups as well. Critics are worried that an abortion available in pill form will be "too easy". They are worried that use of the pill will be abused. What many people do not realize is that while Mifepristone will be beneficial to women's health care, it is not without side effects. In light of all the recent coverage that the "abortion pill" has been given in the media, and all the misinformation surrounding it, I decided researching that Mifepristone would be interesting and helpful. The purpose of my paper is to discover how Mifepristone works, how it is administered, and to look at its side effects. I want to demonstrate the benefit Mifepristone will be to women's health care, while showing that it is not an "easy" solution to abortion.

"Mifepristone, formerly known as RU-486, is a medical alternative to aspiration abortion."(1) It works by blocking progesterone from being absorbed into the uterus. When this happens the uterus sheds the endometrium (lining in the uterus, therefore inducing menstruation. (2 When Mifepristone is used as a method for abortion is it administered as part of a three step process. The first step is that 200 mg of Mifepristone is given orally in a doctor's office. Then within 24 to 48 hours the patient is given 400 mg a drug called Misoprostol either orally or in a suppository form. Misoprostol, which is a synthetic hormone, is used to get the cervix to soften and dilate as well as getting the uterus to relax. The embryo is then expelled.(2) This is supposed to happen approximately fours hours after the administration of the drug. The final step is an examination by a medical professional to make sure the abortion is complete. (2)

There are restrictions as to who can use this medical method of abortion. It is only intended for women to use up to nine weeks after their last menstruation period. Women who are under 18 or over 35, epileptic, diabetics, or suffering from heart, lung, kidney, liver, stomach or intestinal disorders are ineligible. As are women who have taken steroids within the past 12 months, or deemed overweight or a heavy smoker. Women who have used an IUD or hormonal contraceptive within three months prior to conception are not allowed to take Mifepristone as well.(2)

Like any drug or medical method there are side effects to using Mifepristone and Misoprostol. It is the number of side effects and degree of each that critics argue about. The FDA has determined that taking Mifepristone does cause various degrees of pain. Short term physical effects can be pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding, nausea, diarrhea, and fatigue.(2) There are psychological side effects as well. In some cases products of the conception are visualized. (3)

The use of Mifepristone will have a definite impact on reproductive freedom in this country and the world. (3) It is seen as less invasive procedure which gives the woman more freedom and privacy. In the United States it has been reported by the Alan Guttmacher Institute that eighty-nine percent of the abortions occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Mifepristone will allow women another option to terminate a pregnancy in its early stages. (2) Twenty-four percent of the world's population lives in places where abortion is not legal. (3) As a result a significant population of women perform their own abortions or receive illegal abortions which kills them. The medical method of abortion would allow women in these areas of the world to receive a safe method of abortion.

A major issue that critics of Mifepristone have is that they feel that the drug will allow abortions to become "too easy". But the drug is only administered in a medical office and requires at least three visits. The last visit is an examination to see that the abortion is complete and that the mother is in good health. Before the patient is given Mifeprex tablets (Mifepristone) she must sign an agreement in which she acknowledges that there are side effects, that there is a three step process, and that 5 to 8 women out of every hundred do not have successful medical abortions and need surgical abortions . (5) Critics worry that the drug will cause an increase in the number of women who have abortions. Supporters of the drug cite the fact that in France, where the drug is manufactured and was first administered, there has not been an increase in the abortion rate. (2)

Mifepristone will change the way that abortions are administered. This method gives a woman more autonomy and does not require her to go through surgical procedure. It can also prevent pregnancy by taken as soon as a day after she has had intercourse. This new method will allow more women to have access to safe abortions. Mifepristone opens the door to a new area of medicine in which previously surgical procedures are now approached in a medical manner. Whether in support of or against Mifepristone one has to recognize the new technology the drug represents.

One of the problems I had when researching information was finding unbiased information. Both pro and anti Mifepristone groups used "research" and statistics to their benefit. Distinguishing the difference between opinion and fact was difficult. This is especially true because there is not a lot of accurate information about Mifepristone published by reliable sources. This is due to the fact that Mifepristone has just recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Mifepristone that will be beneficial to women's health care and medicine. But one must realize that it is not without side effects and cannot be seen as an "easy" solution to abortion.

For what it's worth, I though I'd share my personal experience using Mifepristone almost a month ago.. After having made the difficult choice to abort, I learned of this pill as an alternative option to having the traditional surgical procedure. Of course, as anyone would, I opted to try the pill because it seemed -less- painful and was something I could do in the privacy of my own home. After having been given the first pill, Mifepristone, at the doctors office on a Friday afternoon, I finished out my day at work with minimal side-effects at that point. The Mifepristone made me slightly sick to my stomach, but compared to the ongoing morning sickness I'd been going through, it wasn't so bad. (ha ha) Misoprostol was the next step, given to me in the form of 4 tablets, to be inserted vaginally myself at home. I was also given a full bottle of Vicodin, as well as a bottle of 800mg Ibuprophen for the pain the doctor anticipated I would encounter (this worried me a little). Late Satuday afternoon, I'd say around 4:30pm, scared to death not knowing what to expect once everything started, and knowing I couldn't turn back now, I inserted the tablets and took 1 Vicodin as directed. About 30 minutes from the time I did this I began to have cramping comparable to what you would feel during a typical menstrual period.. but not for long. Within an hour I had severe cramping.. I'd been warned the pain could equal that of actual child-birth contractions, and this must have been it. (I've never had a child, so I can only imagine) I was to the point of feeling like I would pass out if the pain didn't let up when I passed the first, and largest, portion of what -was- the pregnancy.. Many people will tell you that all you'll see is blood and clots, and it's unlikely anything will look like actual tissue.. but mine sure did.. Large masses of gray tissue were expelled for the following numerous hours. Somewhere close to midnight that night I felt relief enough to know it was over.. or so I thought. 4 days after this, while I -should- have been feeling more or less back to normal, I began to experience increasing pain in my abdomen. I called and spoke with my doctor about this, but felt as though she didn't seem concerned at all. No more than 2 hours after hanging up the phone I developed a fever that shot through the roof out of nowhere, and my heart began beating unbelieveably TOO fast. The "increasing pain" in my abdomen now had me laying in bed, hardly able to move. I called my mother who left work and rushed to my home to get me. I couldn't even get out of bed to let her in when she arrived I hurt so bad. I ended up in the emergency room that afternoon with a heartbeat of 143 beats/min.. (Check your own and then you'll see just how high 143 is) and a 103 temperature I ended up fighting to keep away for the next 4 days. To make a long story short, that first afternoon I spent over 8 hours in a treatment room in the emergency area before they got my vitals under control and discovered the cause of everything.. The abortion pill I used began attacking my own body in a sense, and began a horrendous infection in my uterus. In the end I spent a week in the hospital on 3 of the most potent anti-biotics available, as well as some heavy-duty narcotic pain killers, while specialists from the surrounding hospitals kept watch over me constantly. It's now been almost a month since then, and I still have to have blood work done, as well as ultrasounds every now and then to keep monitoring my recovery. I have constant sharp pains in my abdomen and have been told the scar tissue left over from the infection may now keep me from becoming pregnant in the future.. It's all so much to deal with, and honestly, I don't think I've come to terms with everything yet. It still feels like a bad dream. Regardless of my experience with the pill and side effects it caused me, I can still step back and look at the broad picture of things.. The majority of women who use this method have no problems, and for them, this is a good way to go. I really do think it's a better choice for most, than to have the surgical abortion.. BUT - be warned.. It's not "easy" using the pill, and there's no way to know how you're body will react to it. I never knew I'd go through the things I did because of it. This is definitely not something to be looked at as the "new contraceptive" either, as some are saying. It's so risky, putting your body through something like this. It could take a toll on you that will effect the rest of your life. Like me.. Will I ever be able to have kids after everything that happened? Every woman out there should begin by being aware of how to avoid an unwanted pregnancy from the start. Such as life happens, and most protection only offers 99.9% effectiveness, we forget that's NOT 100%.. If you still become pregnant and choose to abort, do your homework.. read about all possibilities, and all side effects for each.. then decide what's best for you. I think the pill is a great option.. but be careful, it's certainly not without it's flaws.

Additional comments made prior to 2007
It has been almost 2 months since I had made the painful decision to get an abortion. I am only 18 years old so you could imagine hoe scary it was for me. After they examined me and told me how far I was they put me in this rome with a female doctor so I can take the oral pill that actually determines the pregnancy. When I took that pill, I felt fine until I had to get something in my stomach, I couldn't even eat my stomach was turning so bad. the doctor told me that I could insert the four pills vaginally anytime between then and 48 hours after the visit. I decided to insert them that night to get it over with and about an hour after it was literally hell. I was vomiting, bleeding perfusely, and experiencing pain more severe then I had ever felt before. To make a long story shorter, it has been about 2 months and I still haven't exactl stopped bleeding. I am young and afaid to go get checked because of it, and my life will never be the same. I had no choice my situation at the time wasn't what I wanted and now I will always regret it ... Reader on the web, 12 August 2007

I used the pill around february of '07. I was 6 1/2 weeks and I guess I didnt really know what I was getting myself into. I took the first pill which I had no side effects to. When I took the second one the next day, it was almost immediate cramping. Basically the worst cramps I had ever had. I was puking, had diarrea, and was in so much pain I was balled up on the couch crying. I guess I was a "lucky" one because my horrible cramps only lasted about an hour until I passed the birth tissue and then they subsided. Although I bled for a month after that (most of it not heavy), I completly regret it to this day. All I can ever think about is a perfectly beautiful child is now in a sewer somewhere. It's horrible, but thats how I think of it now. I wish I could go back and change things. I wish I never did it. All I hope is that it didnt hurt my chances of having a child in the future ... Hi all, Reading some of your

Hi all,
Reading some of your experiences is terrifying to be honest. I had the first pill yesterday and with in 15 mins i had vomitted it out, i returned to the clinic and was given another pill. Thankfully, i managed to keep it down this time. I am 6 weeks pregnant and have been suffering morning sickness, like the nurse predicted i ended up puking through out the night.
This morning i woke up feeling weak but went in for the sevond part of the treatment, the nurse inserted 4pills and now i am home, cramping and two hours later the bleeding has started. Having been to the toilet before i did see some clots. I am just hoping this process finishes and that i find it less traumatic compared to what i have read.

I am like 5 weeks pregnant....and i dont want to keep the pregnancy caz am not ready. A Pharmacist told my boyfriend that he got the pills....so i got the pills but it was just Misoprostol 200mcg. So yesterday I took 1 tab orally and two vaginally. after like 2 hours i began to feel pain.....and 3 hours later i began to bleed....later that day at around 4 pm i saw a small clot like the size of a dime...and after that the bleeding stop and nothing else.So today i did a test and it was positive....i dnt know what else to do now.....

Thats a false positive.

Thats a false positive. Doctors advice not to take a pregnancy test until 21 days after you take the pills.

You should probably go to a real doctor.... Pharmacists are not supposed to just hand out medicine. If you don't have insurance there are still a lot of places that will help you, goodluck!

Just found out....

Hello, I just found out I could very well be pregnant. I just took a test and it was positive. I immediately felt like a plan to take action. I love children but in this day and age, with the economy and overpopulation I am considering all facts. I personally feel I am not ready mentally and financially, just turned 22. I would want my child to grow up with a great life and father, I'm a struggling single female. Had a feeling something had changed with my body but also just underwent a lot of life changes with a new job, sleep schedule and stress...was waiting for my period but finally got the funds to take a test. I'm scared and don't know who to talk to. I usually talk to my mother about everything but am afraid she will be ashamed of me...The medical abortion pill is something I'm strongly considering. I want to thank all the women who have posted on this site it has really helped me feel better and know that I'm not alone. I know this will be my only abortion if I do decide to do it. The way I've been feeling it could possibly be around 5 weeks... Any support is greatly appreciated.

My Experience

I took the abortion pill this passed weekend and wanted to share my experience.
I was 8 weeks 2 days pregnant when I went in. I was at planned parenthood for about 5 1/2 hours.
At the clinic is where I took my first pill. The first pill had no side effects I felt some slight cramping and the doctor said I would have spotting but never did. I continued through my day as normal.
The next day I was scheduled to take the 2nd pill at 3pm. At 2:30 pm I took my Motrin 800 for pain and at 3 I sat the four pills in my mouth cheek and gum and let them sit for 30 min. Immediately I started to feel cramping (more like menestrual cramps) after 30 minutes I swallowed what was left over of the pills. After about an hr I started spotting. I then felt like I had to pee and when I pushed some blood clots came out this continued for about 4 hours. This morning I an still bleeding (moderate) and have some small blood clots. The experience was not as painful as I thought it would be...thank goodness. I don't regret my decision for I am already a single mom and I'm only 22.when I found out I was pregnant I had just left my boyfriend our relationship was horrible and I could never go back so I know I kafr the right decision for myself and my son. Although I never want to experience this again this is my first and last abortion. I had just read some of the stories on here and they terrified me and just wanted to share everyone's experience is different.

Took Mifepristone Today

ok so after reading all horror stories, im finally going through my first/only/last abortion, I'll never plan to do this again....... so 2 days ago (saturday) I was 8 weeks and 3days pregnant, Im 24years old and never been pregnant until now. On Saturday at around 1pm i was given one 3 pills by the doctor, the first 2 pills were to stop any feelings of sickness and it worked almost immediately, the 3rd pill was the 1st abortion pill, this is the pill that stops the hormones that make your pregnancy continue. I was fine, I even went to the cinema that evening but by 9pm was beginning to feel really tired. The next day (sunday) everything was fine, slight cramping but nothing to moan about, also slight loss of appetite, but im guessing this was because i was anxious of what was to come.
Monday morning at 11:40am, I was given 2 more anti-sickness pills, 2 painkillers to take there and there in the doctors office, then as she explained the proceedure for the rest of the course of pills (to take home), she gave me 4 pills (Mifepristone) to place inside of my mouth (two on each cheek) and sent me home straight away. within 20 minutes before i even got home i started experiencing cramps that felt like diarrhea, these cramps increased, and i went straight unto the toilet when i got home and passed a poo. 25minutes after taking Mifepristone ...........THE WORST 2 HOURS OF MY LIFE.............unexplainable pain,i stripped naked and ran a hot bath, rolled about on my bed, i just couldnt stand, i even took 2 paracetamols and 2 dihydrocodein which i believe is an overdose, but i was just in too much pain...............by 2pm the pain was in and out, the pain had calmed down enough for me to eat, make a hot water bottle and wrap up with a movie(eating and hot water bottle really helped) , 30mins hard unbearable then 30mins bearable pain until about 5:30pm..... everytime the pain was severe id go toilet and immediately pass a clot, the first clot i passed was the size of a Lemon.......... the clots after were large but normal..... its now 6:50pm and im just feeling normal period cramps but still bleeding very heavily.............. Im happy I had the option and even though im a devoted christian I dont regret this at all, but i know i will not do it again firstly because of the pain.

My experience

I am 28 I have two children 4 & 6 and I have been married for 7 years. I made this decision with my husband and full support of my closest friends. I took the Mifepristone pill this past saturday at planned parenthood. The office was extremely supportive, understanding and did not influence or change my decision at all. They are there to support you no matter what, also you have to tell them 18 million times that you are there on your own free will and no one can force you to do this. That night I was fine, I took my antibiotics & anti nausea pills and went to bed. The next morning I had breakfast, took the antibiotics and anti nausea again however throughout the morning I felt very ill and even threw up once. *I had to work that morning* I left early from work. At about 430 I took the pain meds and the anti nausea pills and then at 5 put the 4 tablets in my cheeks. About 20 minutes in I felt nausea, I ran to the bathroom and threw up. I was extremely worried however my husband assured me that the reason they put the pills in your mouth is because it absorbs the medicine through your gums and soft tissues. I rested, and about 2 hours later began to feel crampy. I continued to take the pain meds as directed and the anti nausea. I began to have heavy bleeding, clothes etc. However it wasn't terrifying by an means. Today is Monday and I am off of work, taking it easy and resting. It was not a terrible experience. I think you need support, understanding, and an ease of mind knowing you made the best decision for yourself. Stress will not help this process. Take care of yourself and the rest will come. Also I was only 5 weeks and like a couple days pregnant, I found out quickly and already knew my decision. Have a heating pad, ginger ale, and soup a hand!

I took the first abortion

I took the first abortion pill 3 days ago and experienced nothing major. I actually felt less nausea than I had been feeling during the early stages of pregnancy. Yesterday morning I took the first two tablets (orally). Within 15 minutes I was cramping, and within 30 minutes I was screaming in agony (It felt like someone was cutting me open with knives). The pain was so intense my entire body couldn't stop shaking. I vomited 7 times. (I've never given birth and so can't compare, but I have had 20 hours of tattooing done and that was by far, less painful!) After about 1 hour I was finally able to hold down an Ibprofin, which eased the pain a little. Following another hour I took the second two pills (orally). Within 30 minutes I went to the toilet and blood came pouring out of me, with force, like a waterfall. (To compare I have a 28 day regular-like-clockwork cycle, with very light bleeding lasting 4-5 days). I was a little concerned to say the least! This was happily the worst of it. Since then I have continued to bleed (heavily by my standards), especially when I go to the toilet (it comes out in a steady stream then). I have light cramping and intermittent sharp, stabbing, knife pain in my abdomen. I am curious to see how long it will take for my body to return to normal.

Dear ladies, If you have come

Dear ladies, If you have come to this site because you are considering having an abortion, please understand that you are stronger than you believe. When I was 16, I faced an unwanted pregnancy. My boyfriend walked out of my life and I was told that I could not keep my child and live at home. I was devastated and scared. However, it dawned on me that I was not making choices just for myself anymore. As hard as it was, emotionally and physically, I decided to give my baby life. And though it was the hardest decision I have ever made in my life, I gave her for adoption, I experienced peace and no regrets. I was able to hold her in my arms and love her and I'll cherish that memory forever. Thankfully, her adoptive parents and I decided for an open adoption. I get to see pi tures of her and know that she is well loved. I am not judging you, I've been in your shoes, but I also know that with abortion there is no turning back and you may very well live with regret.

A Doctor's Perspective

I was very happy to find this site, and to see that women are exchanging their experiences with the Abortion Pill. I have been offering the Abortion Pill since 1998. I was one of the researchers of the pill, before it was approved by the FDA. I have since overseen thousands of women who have taken the Abortion Pill through my practice, Early Options, located in New York City.

After reading the blog, I have a few comments that may be useful to women researching this important method.

There are two main issues with the abortion pill. One, it is unpredictable. It is hard to say how it will go for you. Most women experience several hours of significant cramping, and heavy bleeding. Some women don't experience much cramping at all. Some women (I'd say 10%) have excruciating cramps, even with excellent pain medications. While I wish I could say I could find some common denominator - I haven't. IN GENERAL, the earlier the better. At the same time, I have seen women who are only a few weeks pregnant who get extreme cramping and heavy bleeding.

The second main issue with the Abortion Pill is that it typically involves lengthy bleeding. Most women are worried about going through the "miscarriage" part of the process. However, I have gotten far more complaints about the fact that the bleeding just continues for weeks or even months. It's typically not as heavy as a period. However, it can be more annoying - it stops and starts - and I think this can also be emotionally difficult when you are trying to put this difficult situation behind you.

At Early Options, I have had far more success with ending early pregnancy with a non surgical procedure, called Aspiration. It's a quick method. It only takes a few minutes longer than a pap test to complete. There's no electric suction, and no scraping. At Early Options, we offer it in a private comfortable examination room. Unfortunately it is hard to find doctors who perform the procedure correctly.

All in all, if you're not lucky enough to be near a doctor who offers both options, I would still highly recommend medical abortion. Like many women on the site have mentioned, there is a lot of value in being able to go through the process privately. The experience can feel more natural, like a miscarriage. It can be comforting to go through the process with your partner or a friend.

Thank you Serendip for being bold enough to post this blog, and offering real medical advice to women, rather than being politically motivated. I'm so happy to see women having the opportunity to share their experiences and support each other through what is often such a difficult time.

Abortion Pill

I took the abortion pill 4 weeks ago. I never bleed after the pills but had alot of cramps. I went back to the doctor 2 weeks later they did an ultrasound and said there was no fetus. They also did a vaginal exam to be sure and the doctor said the pills worked. It has been 4 weeks now still no bleeding. I took a pregnancy test today and the results came back positive but i haven't had any sexual relations. Please if anyone has any advice please let me know.

Just to help some people out,

Just to help some people out, I recently took the abortion pill and honestly, I expected it to hurt way worse than it actually did. It's truly not that bad.
I went through Planned Parenthood (Baltimore, MD to be exact). At the clinic they gave me the Mifeprex pill to take. After taking the pill, I didn't feel any different at all, I went on with my day... Driving, walking, hanging out with friends, laughing, and having a good time. No pain, no cramping, no bleeding. The next day, I took the 4 Misoprostol pills and placed them on the insides of my cheeks between my cheek and gums. I waited 30 minutes for them to dissolve and then swallowed what was left (which tastes terrible and has a gooey chalk-like consistency). About 20 minutes after I began to feel cramping like a menstrual cycle. These cramps were short and in spurts. About 3 hours later, I began bleeding like a menstrual period, it was clotty, but not too bad. The cramps then became more intense and lasted longer (more like contractions). I was walking around the grocery store at this time and it became difficult to walk, but after resting for about 5 minutes I was able to continue. By the time I got home (about 2 hours later) I went to the bathroom and the clots were larger and the bleeding was heavy (along with contraction-like cramps). After passing the clots, the cramps faded and felt more like period cramps. I also experienced some trouble with diarrhea and nausea but it also went away shortly after passing the clots. I was given Tylenol #3 (with coedine) for pain along with nausea pills, and some Doxycycline to prevent infection.

Overall, my experience was not bad. I decided to end my pregnancy because I was not ready to become a mother and I was not able to provide for myself much less another human being. I would recommend the abortion pill to other women who have decided to terminate their pregnancies. I believe it is a safe and effective way to end a pregnancy.

Quick and easy

Just wanted to put minds at rest of those people like myself that have probably searched every website and only read the negative effects of the pill. I went through the whole process this week and have to say everything went smoothly and wasn't close to the scary things i had read. I took the first pill 4 days ago, went home, felt nausea and actually vomitted two times. This made me worry thinking of I couldn't take the first I had no chance with the second. The next day I went back to the clinic for the second pill, I struggled eat anything before leaving as I was so worried and even threw up my breakfast. I had my partner with me this time who forced me to eat a chocolate bar if anything, he got me the 'boost' bar which suprisingly enough made me feel ready and good. Before going into the clinic I was advised by the nurse the previous day to take pain killers. She said around 1 hour before is good as it is then in ur blood steam by the time u take the pill. I took 2 anadin extras, along with a bite of my boost bar and in I went! I put the four pills in between my teeth and cheeks and waited for them to dissolve, nothing was really happening but luckily a kind helpful nurse walked by me and said it
Would not dissolve with just water so she ran off and got me
Orange squash mixed in with hot water. She told me the steam would help, which it did so i would ask for that. Everytime u take a sip hold the hot water there and mush the pill slightly. The side effects started instantly for me, within 5 mins of the pill starting to dissolve, hadnt event had the full thing yet! But I had no cramps, no headaches or anything. I had no nausea as the nurse with give u anti nausea tablets with the four tablets. The only thing I got was shivers, crazy amount of shivers! Maybe it was contractions in not sure. So me and my boyf got a cab and headed home. I quickly changed into my pyjamas and lay down. The shivering continued, 1hr later the nausea kicked in and I couldn't hold it in, I had to vomit. I was worried about throwing up the chemicals but couldn't keep it in so I went for it. As I vomitted, I felt everything gush out. I knew I was done. My partner quickly picked me out of bed and we went to the toilet and it was clear I had lost the pregnancy. I stayed on the toilet for another 30 mins as I was still shedding tissue. And that was it. I was done from beg to end in 2 hours. All I can say to
Anyone out there who is worried sick, I know the feeling as I was there myself last week, reading the worst possible posts. I would advise staying away from reading so much as everyone reacts differently. Have someone loving with u a ull be fine. It will be over before u know it. Yesterday I felt weak, my partner fed my loads of salads fruit etc and I stayed in bed. Today I feel back to normal, have slightly swollen breasts and bleeding which for me is like a normal monthly

Goodluck to anyone whos about to go through the process, try to relax and not think about it too much. Definately advise taking 2 pain killers before u go in as that's probably why i didnt feel Anything. The nurse said I shouldn't have take anadin extra though as it apparently thins ur blood too much, she said nurofen or ibuprofen, it's up to u but don't go without it already in ur bloodstream

Good luck x

I wish everyone would read

I wish everyone would read this. I recently took the pills and I felt exactly the same way you described. But everyones comments had me scared to death! I'm proud of my decision and I wouldn't change it. I'm 20 years old, and I truly feel that I made the best decision for everyone involved.

I began the first stage of

I began the first stage of the pill at my doctors office Monday afternoon. I went home feeling a little nauseous that day, couldn't tell if it was morning sickness or the pill. I was 8 weeks pregnant and quite nervous. I had spoken to two trusted friends who had both successfully went through the abortion pill process with no complications. They both had recommended this option to me over the surgery. The next day I took one pill prescribed for me for nausea and waited thirty minutes as instructed before taking the second four pills of the abortion. As instructed I placed two pills on each side of my mouth and let them dissolve for thirty minutes before washing the remains down with water. Then I played the waiting game. Within fifteen minutes I began to feel the familiar feeling of mild cramping, as if I were about to start my period. Several moments later the mild cramping quickly shifted into severe cramps and small contractions in which I could mostly feel on my lower left side of my back. As instructed, I quickly washed down the proscribed Vicodin and a few ibuprofen.

After about what seemed like an hour of the extreme cramping it finally began to dull into tolerable period like cramps. My back pain slowly faded a bit and I was able to get comfortable in my bed and concentrate on a movie. I finally felt well enough to make my way to the bathroom in which light bleeding had started and I passed a large golf ball sized clot. I went back to bed where I finished the movie and began to feel well enough to stomach some dinner. The nausea pill must have worked because I didn't feel sick any longer. I had tolerable cramps for most of the night and passed several large clots. Though I didn't bleed through my pad or hardly soak it, every time I went pee, I felt a gush of blood fall out and a clot.

The next day I stayed in bed, rested and kept on the pain pills. Felt very mild cramps at this point. I had to return to work the next day do I went to bed hoping for the best. Today was my day back to work in which I felt fine. Then around lunch time , I began to feel a little weak. Bleeding had been continuous but again nothing heavy enough to soak my pads. By the time I got home to tonight I had began feeling heavy cramping again so I took another pain pill and tried to relax. Around my ovaries, lower stomach, it started to feel tight and tense. Overwhelmed I am now laying in bed hoping I will feel better tomorrow. Unsure of what to expect, I only hope that my body just needed to relax. The bleeding is still coming out when I pee. Here's hoping all I need is a good nights rest. I'm very nervous to get any type of infection after reading many stories here. Does anyone think my day 3 cramping heavy I'd normal?

not easy but not hard

When I had mine it was one pill and then 24 hours you had to take 4 pills that dissolve in your mouth...planned parenthood only lets you get the abortion pill if your 9 weeks or less. If you didn't take a total of five pills I don't think it worked. Planned parenthood also gives you pain medication, anti nausea pills, and antibiotics so you don't get an infection. If you are in severe pain I suggest going to a doctor even if it is illegal it's not worth losing your life over.

I took my first pill at the doctor and felt fine that day had a bit of nausea but nothing more or less than what I was already experiencing. I went about my day normally after taking the first pill. On day number 2 I inserted the 4 pills orally where I let them dissolve in my cheeks 24 hours after my first pill. 30 mins before this I took two IB profin and 1 anti nausea pill. (I started taking antibiotics the night before I took the four pills, the same day I took the first pill). While waiting for the pills to dissolve I started feeling a little out of it and had cramping like my period was about to start. (I believe the out of it feeling was from the anti nausea meds). Yes the pills tasted gross and chalky and it felt like the longest 30 mins just waiting for them to dissolve. After I rinsed the pills down I was cramping much more but not too intense but I had to wait another 30 mins before taking my first pain pill that was prescribed. I took that pain pill after the 30 mins which quickly made me drowsy. I went upstairs to my bed and soon fell asleep. about 2 hours of falling in and out of sleep I woke up. The cramping was much more severe more severe than I had ever experienced but then again my period cramps were very small and insignificant normally so I am not used to having severe cramping at all. I sat up and went to the toilet to use the restroom it felt a little better sitting there but as I relieved myself I felt several large round clots come out of me and this is when the bleeding started. after I had finished I flushed the toilet and stood up. My cramps had gotten so severe that my lower back was throbbing and it was very painful. I turned around and suddenly felt really hot and started sweating a lot. Then I felt like I was going to throw up ... luckily I was in the bathroom and did indeed throw up twice. After throwing up I felt a lot better and my cramping felt less. I layed back down in my bed my boyfriend got my a thermacare heating menstrual pack to put on my abdomen and it felt really nice and gave a lot of comfort so if you are reading this because you are taking the pills I recommend picking those up. I soon fell back to sleep after this and slept for another hour. I woke back up and drank a bottle of water and took another ib profin to sooth my pain until I could take another one of the stronger pain pills (had to wait at least 4 hours to take it) I layed there for a little while longer and could finally take another anti nausea pill and pain pill... I went back downstairs and sat with my boyfriend and my roommate for awhile ... I even ate a bowl of cinnamon life cereal which made me feel pretty good... cramping became much more manageable the worst of it was right before I threw up and that was the only time I threw up ... every time I peed I felt small clots come out. around 7pm that night my cramps felt bearable and were more like a bad period ... I even went to the store and picked up some food to eat for dinner. The rest of the night I felt fine. Today is day three and everything feels normal ... I have no cramping and have small amounts of bleeding like a normal period.

I recommend the abortion pill ... it is way less invasive compared to other procedures and it's very private and natural feeling
I was almost 6 weeks when I took it. It is NOT easy but it is not as scary as everyone makes it seem. You have a greater chance of dieing from childbirth than you have of dieing from this method.

I was scared when I read all the horror stories on the internet but what you read seems to be either super simple and easy or horrifying ... my experience was right in between. Don't be afraid. Follow your doctors instructions and go to your followup.

how cyto works on my 5 weeks old pregnancy

we both experienced almost the same, severe pain was there, its like u are dying to hunger due to severe cramps of stomach,u wont distinguished if its puson or sikmura,I really cried deciding to do this alone, knowing that when I first told my husband that I might possibly pregnant due to am 5 days delayed from expected date on menstruation. When I heard from him that he is innocent with my pregnancy,I felt like I want to run away, want to packed up my clothes, but I didnt do it,instead i always ignored his presence,RIGHT Now Im on my first day of bleeding after the procedure, and the pain was still there physically and emotionally,
Maybe I had a supportive husband and financially stable,I will never lose this baby, this is a sad experience that I will never forget to the rest of my life, losing one's life due to my life's complication, but I guess this is a better decision than giving this baby a chance to live with miserable life and saw how violent his father was.
Hope God will forgiven me with my sin.

I believe you had the

I believe you had the abortion. Taking a pregnancy test right after abortion will almost always show positive. And no you shouldn't tell a doctor if you inserted it vaginally unless you douche like crazy

Serendip Visitor's picture

reply

where do you live that a state has abortions as illegal?? there is a 2% chance that the medical abortion didnt work. this is why clinics make a follow up ultrasound to make sure the fetus is expelled... if it didnt work the female needs to go in for a surgical abortion because the medication will cause severe birth defects. If your state has abortions illegal then how did you get a perscription for it? and i wouldnt be surprised that if you bought it off the street it was probably not the right drugs..

Currently Going Through Week 1-Abortion Pill

Hello All,

I have read most posts on almost every site imaginable regarding this matter. I wanted to not only know what to expect during the abortion pill procedure, but also what to expect after. I am 28 years old and took my first pill on Friday, 4/27/12. The evening I took the first pill, I felt fine. I did get sick once but I think it was because I took a very strong pain killer, not one they prescribed to me. The next day, exactly 24 hours after taking the first pill I had to insert four pills vaginally. As instructed, I laid on my back with my legs up for one full hour so that the pills would dissolve. I did not notice anything happening until about 4 hours after I had inserted the pills. I have always had bad cramping from periods and very heavy periods. The cramps were painful, but not too much worse than my normal menstrual cramps. For about 3-4 hours I passed several large clots and bleeding really bad. I took pain killers and went to bed. The next day, Sunday, I was really tired and continued to pass clots during the morning. The cramps were still pretty bad and I was still bleeding heavily. The nurse at the clinic asked me if I wanted to start a birth control. I opted for the Nuvaring. She informed me that I needed to insert the Nuvaring the next day even if I was still bleeding. This makes me worried because one of the warnings of the Nuvaring is potential clotting. I was also fearful of putting it in so early because I was instructed that NOTHING was to be inserted for 2 full weeks. I was also afraid that it would block anything trying to come out. But, I did as the nurse instructed me to do and inserted the Nuvaring Sunday morning. Monday morning I woke up and went to the bathroom and blood literally poured out of me. I showered and went to work. The bleeding was still pretty heavy. Monday evening I returned home, layed back down and slept with a heating pad. Tuesday morning, woke up and went to the bathroom, same thing happend with blood pouring out of me. Cleaned up and went to work. During the day the blood started to let up a little bit. Wednesday morning, woke up and went to the bathroom, same thing happend but not as much blood. Still bled during the day. Today is now Thursday, this morning I woke up and went to the bathroom and the blood wasn't pouring as bad as the previous days but there was still quite a bit. During the day the blood let up and is seeming to be the flow of a normal period for me. I will post again with my progress. My follow-up appointment is on the 15th. At the clinic I went to, they said to return after two weeks. I was told the bleeding could last anywhere from 2 weeks to one full month. I was wondering how long it actually lasted for other women so I will continue to post updates. Hope this helps!

update

Things have not gone Well since my last post. I took the pills on 4.27.12 and am still bleeding. At my follow up appointment. They gave me a test and it was negative but didn't give me an ultrasound. I have cramps today but am still afraid of the length of time I have been bleeding....I have been bleeding for two months now. It is more like a light period but I am really worried. Any suggestions or information would be helpful. Thanks.

Bleeding for 60 days and counting

Just had to reply to you, Serendip Visitor, and let you know that you're not alone. I didn't see anything about such prolonged bleeding when I researched my options prior to the abortion. I honestly think if I had known this would/could happen, I would have gone with the surgical procedure. I've now been bleeding for 60 days, with 4 separate "surges" of large (some chicken egg sized, some prune sized) clots and HEAVY sudden flow... generally the flow is low, but constant. I have had only two 10-12 hr periods of not bleeding. It is mentally and physically exhausting, as I never know when the bleeding will increase and I will soak through a pad/pair of pants. I use a divacup for my regular periods, but that has leaked frequently with this process, as it seems my cervical position changes and pushes it around/breaks the seal/or the blood overflows. So I've tried tampons after 2 weeks, but blood overflows that, too, or the flow is light enough that I feel like the tampon is "wasted"...but never know which it will be. So now I am finally using the tampon/divacup AND a pad, 24-7... feels like I've been walking around in a diaper for two months.

My husband and I are not having regular sex because of the bleeding and my never knowing if I'll be gushing or almost dry... so that's really frustrating, too.

I wish it was easier to find information about this prolonged bleeding. It's horrible! My cervix is still somewhat open as well... I don't know when it will close!

(I know there's no tissue remaining, as I saw the whole sac and checked for integrity -- nothing was left inside and I have no signs of infection and was cleared at my follow-up visit... so this is all "normal" and absolutely not concerning to anyone but myself!)

Serendip Visitor's picture

So Sorry...

I'm so sorry to hear that you are going through so much. I had the same amount of bleeding for a while. This month is the first time my period has been "on time" and has had a regular flow for about 5 days. It is insane to me that the recovery period took about 9 months while being advertised as only lasting from 2 weeks to 4 months. Shame on them for misrepresenting the facts...good or bad! I hope you get better soon. What did seem to help was that I did not use tampons for the last 4 months. I ONLY used pads. I did bleed through them quite a bit but it did seem to help me heal. I hope you have some closure with this soon. Take care.

I need advice.

I found out I was pregnant this past Saturday. My mom had me @ 15 & she's always spoken to me about using condoms with my boyfriend.(been with him for a year) . She's always said if I get pregnant shed have me get an abortion. I'm 17 so I'm under her rules till I'm 18 in Sept. Point is, I feel totally pressured into taking the pill. I have my appointment to take it tomarow morning. I'm scared. I'm so scared after reading all these stories. I just don't know what to do. I only have my mother. My boyfriend has NO family but his mother. He is an only child. So were alone in this. All we have is us. I want this child because I'm at blame for brining it life. But I won't have a home if I keep it, I'm afraid about what all these woman said, not getting pregnant, getting hospitalized, etc. I'm just so afraid. I don't know if to leave with my grandmother in Az , or abort. I need a real woman's opinion.

scared but okay

So I am 5 Weeks pregnant going by my last menstrual but going by the last Time I had sex I believe I am only 3 Weeks. I went to a planned parenthood facility that charged me $430. I waited for a while seeing though so many women were having an aspiration abortion. I took a urine test, had blood drawn, and a vaginal ultrasound. All the nurses were very polite and well mannered. I took one pill there. I had no side effects besides the nausea ive been experiencing. Today I took the 4 pills by mouthed. But 15 mins prior I took 2 codeine pills and had a nice warm bath( I wasn't bleeding I could do it. While in the tub I let the pills dissolve in my mouth and washed the residue down with water. About 10 mins later I felt a little nauseous and got out the tub sat on the toilet and vomited. While vomiting I passed a clot and that was all. Felt very mild cramps and called about vomiting after taking the pills. I think taking meds before taking the pills helps a lot with the pain.. I've had induced vaginal labor before.so

Scared to Death

I found out that I am pregnant about four days a go (the day before Easter). We went on vacation mid-March, came back and i took a plan b pill, guess that didn't work. According to all the pregnancy calendars Im about 5 or 6 weeks. I've had an abortion before, about 5 and a half years ago when I was 16 (the only regret i have in life). I had the surgical procedure. It was bad, i was severely depressed and for years thought that I may not be able to have kids. WELL... here i am, pregnant again. Im so sad and feel like Im alone, i honestly don't want to go through with another abortion, but i feel as if i have no choice. My boyfriend has a 6 year old son and he says he's not ready to have another one, I feel as though if you're not ready at 30 when will you be? He said that ultimately it is my decision and he'll be here regardless but I don't believe him. He keeps bringing up the abortion pill & is basically forcing it on me. I'm also scared to tell my family and disappoint my father, they haven't even met my boyfriend yet. So with that I still haven't decided which way to go, I'm leaning towards keeping my baby but at the same time I'm trying to be considerate of my boyfriends feelings. I honestly didn't know that the abortion pill had all these horror stories, i just decided to do a little research and stumbled upon this conversation. If i was scared before I'm petrified now.

:'(

Never mind my stupid email adress I'm too lazy to change it. I'm 7 weeks 5 days I have NO one I can talk to about this. I went to planned parenthood Wednesday planning to take the pill. They were EXTREMELY rude and did not want to answer any of my questions... I have health concerns I have questions!!! Instead I was given a pamphlet on information on the pill and was to sign all these papers and they make you pay up front. You go into a room with a bunch of other girls who are going to take the pill too. U sit and watch a continuous video about the abortion procedure. I felt like cattle being herded into a room, waiting for ur "turn". I was scared to death I didn't wanna go thru this without talking to a REAL doctor. The "doctor" at the clinic said he was not an obstetrician and wasn't certified to answer my health concerns and questions.... Seriously ?!!! He just wanted me to take the pill or leave. Was very rude. I left that day. Now I'm 7 weeks 5 days like I said and I only have up to 9 weeks. I know the longer u wait the harder it is that's why I'm scared to death it will be a horrible experience and won't work all the way. My bf wants the baby and he will leave me if I don't have it. We've been together for years. I'm just bawling my eyes out I have no idea what to do.

Optimism

I know that it's difficult to be optimistic for an abortion but give yourself a few days!!! It's not like it'll happen immediately I was told some people don't even feel pain and passes a clot without knowing! I really do hope it worked for you and everything will be fine, nut if it does I would encourage you to post up your results whether good or bad so that everyone can know. Because when I first did it I read many scary reviews and very little of good ones. Then I thought about "what are the chances that someone will put up something good that happened versus bad?"
So be optimistic about it and give yourself a few days! Plus dont ve afraid to ask your doctor or information they are there to help you!!!

Serendip Visitor's picture

I was afraid. But, it wasn't scary after all.

I took the abortion pill in Febuary 2011 (I was 22, & it's still the only abortion I've had). I was only 3 weeks along when I took it because, amazingly, I found out 2 weekes before my period. (One of my close friends feared she was pregnant & was nervous about taking a pregnancy test. So I offered to take one with her to ease her stress. We split the 2 in 1 First Responce digital test; long story short: hers was negative & mine was positave! I really do feel like it was a miracle how I found out so soon.) I also believe the earlier you are in the pregnancy, the easer & less painful the side effects from the medication are. I took the pills in the nessicary steps/time prescribed to me by my doctor at 11am. About 45min to an hour later I started to feel the intense abdominal cramps that my doctor said I would experience. Once the crampes started they became horribly severe & extraordinarily uncomfortable! However, this intense pain only lasted for about an hour. Slowly, the pain subsided & became much more tolerable throughout the day. I began to bleed very soon after the cramps set in. There were blood clots in the discharge, but not massive or at all painful when expelled. The pain was basically nonexistent by the morning of the next day. I was able to go to work & all of my classes (while wearing a panty liner) with no physical abnormalities. Also, the bleeding completely stopped after a day & 1/2.
It was not a fun experience, to say the least, but with the support of myfamily, friends, & boyfriend, it was over in no time. And it was very nice to be in the comforts of my own home during this process. There is NO doubt in my mind that I made the right decision for myself at the time. And that is all we can do in life; try, with all we have, to make the best choices for ourselves in each moment of everyday. The only person who can make this decision is you (& your partner, if present). My advice is: Gather & research all the information you can & educate yourself on every option available to you... Only then can you choose to do what is best. Don't be afrade to personally speak to professionals (Docters, psychologists, family, friends, even hotlines), ask questions, or reach out for help if you need it! Fear will only waist time and enhance what is already a stressful situation.
Above all else remember, you are NOT alone in this!

Need to see dr. asap!!

Hi I just want to start off with saying that I also chose the pill for my one and only abortion and I developed the same things as you on the next day which was on 3/10/12. I also had the same thought like I'm not gone take the 4tabs if I'm feeling this way I will just get the procedure done. But before I did that I made two phone calls one to my sister which is a nurse and the nurse at planned parenthood. They both asked me if I had took the prescription for nausea that was given along with prescriptions for ibubrophen 600-800mgs and antibiotics for no infection. I didn't take it because I thought the nausea may get worse, but I took the med and was fine. So I went ahead and took the 4pills by mouth which dissolved in 30mis and swallowed whatever was left with water. Then everything else started to run its course. The reason why I explained my situation is because first of all you are 42yr old woman which should no better not to go back to the doctor or at least call somebody. You may not know what else could be going on as a result of you not finishing the product as told. Second and to be bed ridden for that amount of days should also ring a bell that something must be wrong. I hope you will be incouraged instead of discouraged to really go get checked out!!! This is your one and only body....time to wake up
