Survival of the fittest

Babtunde A Oronti's picture

TOPIC: SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

INTRODUCTION:

“Over time a society or community of living things will gradually gravitate towards a form of organized setup (beneficial or detrimental) without necessarily having any external input. "Babatunde Oronti 2008"

DISCUSSION:

  • WHAT MAKES AN ORGANISM FIT OR UNFIT FOR SURVIVAL?

Sickness

Weakness

Isolation

Limitations (Height, Sight, Body features for example in giraffe, etc)

Population

  • ORIGINATION

    1. ENVIRONMENTAL

    1. GENETIC

A genetic disease or disorder is any disease that is caused by an abnormality in an individual's genome. (All of the genetic information, the entire genetic complement, all of the hereditary material possessed by an organism.)

MAIN FOCUS:

  • WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF POPULATION ON THE CHANCE OF SURVIVAL FOR A SPECIE OF ORGANISMS?

  • HYPOTHESIS:

In a community of two types of populations, the population with the highest number will eventually dominate the environment when all other conditions are equal or stable.

Genetic Drift T

Procedure for using the NetLogo program to demonstrate the effect of population on the chance for survival.

· Click on file.

· Click on Models Library.

· Click on Biology.

· Click on Evolution.

· Click on Genetic drift.

· Click on GenDrift T interact.

· Click on open at the bottom of the screen.

· Set colors to number 2.

· Set number to 1000.

· Slide speed to the left (Slower).

· Click on setup.

· Click on go.

Note:

You can set the walls around a group of colors in such a way that you can monitor the population within a particular area. This will enable you to make one color of your choice the most populous and hopefully it will be the most dominant color at the end of your demonstration in order to prove that your Hypothesis is true.

Set the demarcation (walls) by clicking on “place-wall” button or remove the demarcation by clicking the “remove-wall” or “remove-all-walls” button.
