"As Presenters Cut Back on Streams, Some Disabled Arts Lovers Feel Left Out"

Serendip is an independent site partnering with faculty at multiple colleges and universities around the world. Happy exploring!
In preparation for the unit on autism in my clinical psychology class, we were assigned this URL to read the ASAN’s (Autistic Self Advocacy Network) definition of autism.
I was captivated by the documentary, and I wanted to begin with the most glaring difference between Camp Jened and institutions such as Willowbrook State School: joy. Unlike many depictions of disabled people, who are seen as monsters or recluses, the campers were constantly cracking jokes, playing games and music, forming romantic relationships, and overall unabashedly living fulfilling lives that they couldn't imagine back home.
Looking back at the ten principles of disability justice, I believe that the documentary highlighted each part.
I really enjoyed watching Crip Camp and seeing how current policy such as the passage of the ADA in 1990 was a victory led by disabled activists. I wish this was included in my previous coursework as it is a vital part of American history and shows the power of this group to use collective power to make governmental change. I also found it amazing how Camp Jened provided an initial space for community forming and empowerment.

I just came across this article and I felt like it discussed a lot of similar topics from our class earlier this week!
The Hawai’i state legislature is moving towards passing a bill that would recognize American Sign Language (ASL) as “a distinct language with its own rules, structure,

Deaf Culture
*There is not one way to be deaf.
d vs. D
For this week, I decided to watch the sound of metal. After the first few scence, I was expecting to watch a movie about a person that becomes deaf and resists learning deaf culture at any opportunity. However, as the movie progresses, and Ruben becomes more immersed in the deaf community, I saw Ruben's character development. Despite the fact that Ruben is portrayed as an addict and admits to being a heroin user, one thing I appreciated is that this movie does not center itself around Ruben as an addict, but rather Ruben as a person struggling to fit into his new community. It would have been easy to create a scene where Ruben relapses, goes back to his old life, and never comes to appreciate sitting in silence, as he does in the last scene of the movie.
CRISPR is such an incredibly complex bioethical issue that I believe more people should be discussing. I fear, as stated in the readings, that through methods of CRISPR disabled populations could be copletely eradicated. Society directly overlooks the contributions, thoughts, and value that disabled inviduals offer and have offered for centuries. The loss of disabled communties is incomprehensible and indescrible, as countless things, perspectives, forms of art, and are taken out due to incorrect perceptions on quality of life. I believe CRISPR, with informed consent from adult indivuals, can be acceptable, though how do we deem if an embryo will or will not have good quality of life based on possible disabilities?
Hi all,
Here are the notes from class today!
