Serendip is an independent site partnering with faculty at multiple colleges and universities around the world. Happy exploring!
Something I've been thinking about a lot throughout the novel is the use of language. Nussbaum, likely because of her history as a playwrite, writes the characters as if they are coming on and off a stage. She also writes her chapters in the way that these characters would talk. There is typically an emphasis in academia on writing books in "Standard" English, in a more complex and elequent way. We've already talked in class about how this form of writing makes texts less accessible to disabled people, as well as to people to whom English is not their first language, or who have not learned much of English in school. Using "Standard" English in academia, and claiming that it is more complex and sophisticated, takes power away from AAVE and other forms of English.

Rewriting the old disability script
Over spring break, my mother, grandmother, and I visited London. In this major metropolis, many commuters navigate the city via red-double decker buses, underground trains, or by foot. When my mom and I have traveled in the past we rely on these forms of public transportation, or we walk to our destination. On this trip we have navigated the city differently, primarily riding in Ubers or taxis to get around. We switched our mode of travel because most of London’s public transportation is not accessible for people with decreased mobility.

Hi everyone! Below is a link to my midterm project. It's a website that explores how disabled artists are (re)imagining and expanding what dance, access, and embodiment mean. Hope you enjoy, and any feedback you have is welcome!
