The Brain Of Music

Verolga Nix-Allen's picture

I am  Dr. Verolga Nix-Allen. I am a composer, arranger and have a choir of 30 adult voices called INTERMEZZO CHOIR MINISTRY singing my original music and Octavo music in Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. I founded the INSTITUTE FOR THE PRESERVATION OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSIC, the rationale being "Nothing but an echo of the past, yet I am the echo of the future, how will I ever know where to go, if I don'y know where I've been".  I am one of the two editors of SONGS OF ZION. a Supplementary Hymnal under writted by the United Methodist Church. I am interested in finding more information about: -

Parts of the brain for artistry, namely music, ie, singing

**RESEARCH SHOWS THAT MORE OF THE BRAIN IS USED WHEN MAKING MUSIC THAN WAS THOUGHT BEFORE.

OBSERVATIONS

  • are the part of the brain for artistic behavior in general, the same part used for singing, dancing, composing in particular?
  • the left half=language; right half =instrumental (equal size) but when together (singing) the frontal lobe becomes involved and the 3 parts together become very active, therefore, many parts of the brain including the motor etc. are used for music
  •
  • are there different parts or stimuli of the brain used for individuals singing vs a choir singing?
  • not fouind info distinguishing differences
  •
  • do brain parts enlarge or change having been trained in a Conservatory of Music as opposed to natural vocal or musical skills?
  • according to Dr. Lawrence Parsons of the University of Texas-San Antonio, referencing researchers at the University of Munster in Germany, music lessons at an early age actually enlarges/expand the brain.

THE BRAIN,  THE BRAIN,  IT'S DRIVING ME INSANE, ,

Under the neocortex, there's an avalanche going on,

Interconnected neurons, cells,

Right brain, left brain made of gels

Cognitive unconsciousness that  swells,

Cerebellum, sensors, boxes that  tells,

                       WHEW!

Story telling gives it all a kick,

Because we're making MU...............................SIC!          YEAH!

INQUIRY

The brain, the brain, it's driving me insane,

Now let's inquire about Inquiry, it's a mystery and imagery

So now I'm a Metacognition, something like a roaming musician,

There's awareness, analysis, thinkinh, learning, assessment, empowerment, emotions burning,

Transparency, experiments and reflection, student views take another direction,

Patterns, comparisons are all in the score, "Why this?  Why that"? we shout  "encore"

Strengths and weaknesses never disdain, remember I'm a Metacognition and it's all...in the BRAIN. YEAH!

Singing while studying

My daugther loves to sing. She also loves to sing while she is studying or doing homework.

I feel that singing takes focus away when you are studying or doing homework.
I am wrong about this? Should I let her sing while she studies, reads, is doing biology problems.

I appreciate your advise.

Thanks,

Concerned Mom
