Body Odor-An Unpleasant Encounter

Melissa Brown

"What is that smell?" you ask.
"It is absolutely disgusting," you reply to yourself as you continue walking along. Then you realize that this smell just keeps on following you, from classroom to lunchroom to dorm room, even in the courtyard. Then it hits you that garbage has not been following you everywhere but you are the cause of that disgusting smell; you have body odor. What is this phenomenon of body odor? According to John Riddle, Body odor is the term used for any unpleasant smell associated with the body(1).

Most of us are concerned about how we look especially, how we smell so body odor which can be a potentially fatal blow to a person's social life is not a welcome addition to one's ingredients for success. It is this human fear of being excluded that led to the invention of the term, body odor. In the 1910s and 1920s, advertisers highlighted people's discontent with the things around them and with themselves in order to encourage them to buy their products. A group of advertising men used the term B.O. to mean body odor in a women's deodorant advertisement for their product, Odo-Ro-No. It played upon women's sentiments that beauty was important to achieving their main goal in life: a husband.

Listerine, which today has mundane advertisements with bottles of Listerine and a voice talking about the results of laboratory research that show Listerine's ability to combat gingivitis, cavities and so on, also used this approach. Listerine had an advertisement that showed "pathetic Edna" who was approaching her "tragic" thirtieth birthday and was always "a bridesmaid and never a bride" apparently because she suffered from Halitosis or bad breath (of course it could not have been personality problems that was hindering Edna's romantic progress!). As a result of this ad, Listerine's sales went from $100,000 a year in 1921 to more than $4 million in 1927. Body odor is a major concern for most people and even those who do not suffer from it are concerned about preventing body odor because of its negative social consequences.(2)

People are very sensitive about how they smell. Humans do not appreciate the power of a bad smell as much as skunks appreciate theirs. The striped skunk which is known in the scientific community as Mephitis mephitis accurately shoots a narrow stream of yellow fluid, butyl mercaptan, up to 10 feet at a threat. If the fluid hits the eyes of the threat it may cause temporary blindness. Even if the skunks misses, which is rare, the musk will cause nausea, gagging and general discomfort. (Perhaps next time you are at a party and you receive some unwelcome attention, you should raise those armpits or let out a breath of air to your unsuspecting predator.) Most people however, try to do quite the opposite and purchase expensive perfumes to mask odors and create a sensual smell that will attract the opposite sex. They spend a lot of money buying perfumes like Object of Desire by Bvlgari and they do not realize that the fluid that skunks emit is commercially used as a base for perfumes because of its clinging nature.(3) This makes me wonder whether if it is only by having a bad smell that we can get a good smell.

So what exactly causes us to have that bad smell? Most of the causes are related to lifestyle choices. If you use drugs, toxins or herbs such as alcohol and cigarette smoking, you body will smell. Also if you eat certain foods such as garlic and raw onions you will have an unpleasant breath. You can also develop body odor by simply sweating excessively or practicing poor hygiene. A couple other causes of body odor include: tooth or oral conditions such as periodontal disease and gingivitis. Also, there can be inborn errors of metabolism for example, aminoaciduria. Most of these problems are a result of a decision that the sufferer had made about how he chooses to lead his life. If he chooses to be a chain smoker he will smell like a cigarette. If he chooses not to shower or wash his clothes then he will have a pungent smell. If he chooses not to practice proper dental hygiene then he will have Halitosis. However, if he sweats excessively because he has a fear of social situations then his cause of body odor cannot be as easily rectified. In addition, people who suffer from aminoaciduria also cannot easily change their lifestyle to rectify their body odor because aminoaciduria results from an enzyme deficiency. We should not judge or marginalize people because of their smell because the cause of it may go beyond poor hygiene.(1)

Almost everyone has received a compliment about the perfume that he or she is wearing. This shows that people react to scents and that a pleasant scent encourages a favorable perception of that person. New research has shown that some individuals are highly sensitive to smelling a component of body odor which is called androstenone. Furthermore, if the person can easily smell androstenone then he will decide whether or not he likes the person based on the smell. What is androstenone? It is a human pheromone which is a chemical attractant that is in body secretions like perspiration. Men release large quantities of androstenone while women omit small amounts. So men are more likely to be judged by their smell than women. According to the study, fifty percent of people cannot smell androstenone at all and one half of them can only catch a whiff and enjoy the scent. Those who can smell androstenone, on the other hand, do not like the smell and compare it to urine or perspiration. The study went on to show that there was a correlation between the ability to smell androstenone and the androstenone-smeller's judgment of the person. In other words, if someone can smell androstenone on someone else and finds the smell unpleasant then he will dislike the person.(4)

Clearly, there is a lot at risk if one has body odor since man is a gregarious animal then body odor can make him unable to maintain or even start relationships. We have realized this so there are number of ways to eliminate body odor. One of the most rudimentary ways to get rid of body odor is to wash with both soap and water especially in the groin area and armpits which are more likely to smell. The best soap to use is a deodorant soap which impedes the return of bacteria. Showering, as well as, washing your clothing regularly will help to prevent body odor. In addition, we should wear natural fabrics like cotton which absorb perspiration better than synthetic materials like polyester. Athletic apparel makers like Nike and Adidas are adopting this idea in their clothing design by creating materials that cause the sweat to evaporate faster.

You should also use commercial deodorants which mask underarm odor or use antiperspirants which reduce the amount of perspiration. If these fail then you should turn to France, the land of fine perfumes and "Le Crystal Nature" which is a chunk of mineral salts that helps to keep bacteria under control without irritating the skin. A more serious approach to fighting body odor is Drionic which is an electronic device that plugs up overactive sweat ducts and keeps them plugged for up to six weeks.(5) There are many ways to avoid having body odor. The easiest way to find out what is available to you is to take a stroll in your local Eckerd, CVS or Riteaid.

Body Odor is a major concern for human beings. It is one concern that affects men and women to almost the same extent. We are concerned about our smell because people judge how we take care of ourselves by our smells and use this information to decide whether we are worthy of friendship because of it. We need to pay attention to how we smell not only because of social interactions but because odors from our body may alert us to a medical problem like a urinary tract infection or periodontal disease. It must be noted however that much of the hype about body odor comes from marketing consultants who need to sell their companies' product and play on our insecurity. Try to avoid being caught up in this web of commercialism while at the same time taking good care of your body.

I have been searching for an answer about this one person I work with. He smells intensely of a vinegar like substance, but honestly I would have to say he smells like pickles. half the people I work with say the same thing. It is so intense that I get a headache and a stomache and he is unbearable to be near. I cannot find anything on the internet that would explain this, and I do not have the guts to ask the poor guy, because honestly I cannot even be near him. Any speculation on this matter????? Thank you

I have the same problem with one of my employees who is from Nepal. I see alot of people with posted requests for body odor issues. Mr. Chan has won the Geneva award for his invention in the medical category for a product that cures body dor. A press release was issued and maybe some of your readers would benefit from it.

Here it is below:

Dr. Mist winner of several awards including the Geneva Award for itsí invention in the medical category is currently marketed as a deodorant is also used as a multi-function hygiene product. As a deodorant, there is absolutely no staining, no aluminum, alcohol, oils or fragrances and it flushes out toxins. Customers are moving away from sticks and gels which stain their clothes and lasts part of the day. Dr. mist will last for days, even if bathing is not possible (ie: patients in hospitals, campers, etc)

Dr. mist is a new invention based on floatation technology that works like an anti-perspirant, but still allows the pores to breathe. As recently featured on the news, it is also very effective athlete's foot, soothes mosquito and insect bites, accelerates healing in wounds, clears up acne and pimples with visible results in 24 hours and soothes skin irritation ... I had bad breath and body odor since I was born. Spent more than 20 years and thousand of dollars trying to find what was missing in my system until I saw Dr. Brenda Watson describing what happens when there is not enough intestinal flora in the body. What happens? Vitamins along with impurities go straight to the blood causing the odor. So that is what was missing in my system.

I started taking probiotics (the higher the number the best) and multi enzymes and that was the beginning of my cure. Now I added Culturelle Lactobacilus Gg and no more body odor and bad breath.

Please, tell other people so they do not go through what I went through ... Mindy, 31 October 2006

Try putting your son on a wheat/gluten free diet for the fecal smell. It cured my children's fecal odor. The fact that your son has autism has nothing to do with the odor.
changing his diet could cure this problem. Some parents' of autistic children have claimed to see benefits with a wheat/gluten and dairy free diets. My children have food intolerances which would cause attention deficit disorders with hyperactivity. Once the offending food was eliminated this condition was no longer a problem.

He might have a bowel

He might have a bowel blockage. I've got a friend that has this problem with her 10 yr. old. She won't use the bathroom for a while, and then when she does her poop is so hard and big as your arm. Her breathe will smell like poop because it backs up so far, that it goes all the way up to her throat. There's some drink that she has to drink so she will keep herself flushed out and won't get impacked. Maybe a couple of teaspoons of olive oil and empsom salt in a glass of water will do the trick. Good-luck!

Vinegar Body Odor

I wonder why nobody knows the answer to the vinegar body odor? I have this problem! I bathe a lot (1-3 times a day). I wash with deodorant soap AND I have started putting deodorant in places I do not care to mention. I drown myself in the soap (both liquid and bar). I smell fine for an hour or two after I bathe but then I start to smell sour.

I have asked my doctor and they don't know. My clothing gets the smell in it too. I wash my clothes every time I wear them. I use tons of Tide and Downey and spray my clothes with perfume too. It still does not mask the scent.

I don't like to leave the house any more. I don't like it when people hug or touch me.......I can see it in their face when they pull away....they could smell it. Sometimes people comment on it.

It is not my diet, I don't eat onions and garlic very often. I don't eat spicy food. I don't eat pickles, vinegar or other foods that could cause this. My clothes are sparkling clean. I am sparking clean. I wish I knew what to do.

Vinegar smell

My daughter, now 18, has smelled of vinegar since birth. As an infant she sweated profusely, distinctly smelling of vinegar. She's seen a couple of dozen doctors, none of them had a clue. Except one, who suggested researching "Inborn Errors of Metabolism".

If you've had any success, I'd love to hear from you.

(My daughter is also a clean/hygiene freak who changes her clothes several times a day.)

VINEGAR SMELL

I have resently had bipass surgury and take a lot of heart medication. I sweat terribely from my head at night and I smell like viniger in the morning. I think some of this is due to the fact that our heads are buried in a pillow at night and has little or no ventalation. I began washing my my hair every morning while showering and sleeping without a pillow at night and this seems to have done the trick. If you are sweating from your head try washing your hair daily keeping it cut short and sleeping without a pillow. Worked for me!!!!

B.O.???????

I too have been going through this unpleasant body odor syndrome. People claim that I smell of feces. I cannot smell it, and my closest friends and family claim that they don't smell it either. However, this is becoming a problem, since I seem to encounter this problem when I am at work. As far as solutions, could it possibly be a yeast imbalance in the system, coming out through the blood as malodorus? Something to look into. Desperately seeking solutions, thank you.

I have been experiencing body odor and bad breathe for over 12 years I guess and all my doctors, dentists are saying I am healthy and the don't detect any such complain. I see the reactions in people everyday when I pass them or talk to them. I am not sure what the smell is like because I can't really smell it myself. I tried omitting things from my diet and taking acidophilus and charcoal but nothing seems to help. I heard amount TMAU which is an inherited deficiency in the body's ability to break down certain food containing choline. Everything I tried never worked and I'm currently out of options. How can I continue to live with this. It has taken my self esteem and my social life is so isolated. I need help.. I'm having suicidal thoughts. Thank you

BODY ODOR

I HAVE A VERY DISTINCTIVE BODY ODOR. I SMELL LIKE FECES. IT SMELLS LIKE I HAVE JUST HAD A BOWEL MOVEMENT IN MY CLOTHES ALL THE TIME. AND MOST OF THE TIME PEOPLE THINK I PASSED GAS OR SOILED MYSELF. IT HAS TAKEN AWAY MY SOCIAL LIFE. I AVOID EVERYONE: FRIENDS,FAMILY, AND PUBLIC PLACES. I HAVE CLEANSED FOR THE LAST SEVEN YEARS AND JUICED VEGETABLES FOR THREE YEARS. I AM PRACTICALY A VEGETARIAN AND NOTHING HELPS. I HAVE DONE ALL THE THINGS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO HELP: TAKING PROBIOTICS,CHLOROPHYLL, ONE TEASPOON OF APPLE CIDER VINEGAR BEFORE EATING A LONG WITH DIGESTIVE ENZYMES, JUICED GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES,VITAMINS B'S, ETC. PLEASE HELP. I AM WILLING TO DO ANYTHING. DESPERATELY SEEKING HELP!

have you tried

Hi-Im very sorry to hear about your problem.I had the same smell also, starting when I was about twelve. I had it for aprox seven years. Like you I was totally clean and washed daily.
It robbed me of the most important years of my life.I lost friends and a real education.I dont know why it started or finished but im ok now.
I really think its down to a candida/gut fermintation problem which I have had for years. That's a systematic candida problem by the way.
It is such an antisocial thing to smell and nobody understands. It's not like you can tell people you did not soil yourself!

My advice is to try a probiotic that is the only thing that has helped my candida. Do some research on google about it.
It is worth trying for sure. It's amazing stuff.
If you want any more help email me.

I have the same problem and I have been tested with TMAU

I have the exact same problem--fecal smell! for over 9 years! A few month ago, I went to see a medical genetist who suggested a urine analysis for me to test for TMAU syndrome. If you do a little research online, you will find that TMAU stands for Trimethylaminuria, the so-called fishy odor syndrome. I'm affected. is a rare metabolic disorder that causes a defect in the normal production of the enzyme Flavin containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3). When FMO3 is not working correctly or if not enough enzyme is produced, the body loses the ability to properly breakdown trimethylamine (TMA) from precursor compounds in food into trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) through a process called N-oxygenation. Trimethylamine then builds up and is released in the person's sweat, urine, and breath, giving off a strong fishy odor.

HOWEVER, only 10-15% of the affected people smell like fish, most of them develop fecal smell or garbage smell.

If you want, you can get yourself tested. But I don't think it's gonna make a difference though since there is no cure for TMAU. I was devastated after I knew there is no cure for this and I'm stuck with the fecal smell for the rest of my life.

We are a small group of unfortunate people who are not understood by the general public. I guess all we can do is to find something we enjoy doing but ALONE.

I have the same problem at first I thought I must be going crazy or maybe it's my diet. My doctor claims their is'nt a medical condition that can cause the feces smell. I didn't notice the smell untill I started a physically demanding job that would cause me to become dehydrated from sweating so much. Co-workers think I'm anti-social because I avoid the lunch rooms, my family think I'm gay because I don't have any relationships and It really affected my work ethic as I tend to not want to sweat because of the way it makes me smell. I see some post here about smelling like an ashtray? I'd rather have that problem would smoking help? or is their a healthier way to beat this problem? A weaker man would have killed himself by now.

Body Odor and feces Smell

there are several things to try until you get to the bottom of your situation. First start taking probotics like acidolphillis bacillus or Primadolpillus, for digestive flora, also an antifungal like grapeseed or frapefruit seed extract for yeast or other fungal infections, digestive enzymes for digestion (that's where the problem starts) also chlorella tablets are good to chew (not chlorophyll (unless it's Chinese) after meals because it helps the BB and works on the BO. You may start to smell worst before better with the chlorella but it cleanses and detoxes the liver, kidneys, and blood. There is also an antioxidant called Megahydrin or Mycrohydrin that is a 1000 times stronger than vitamin C and is taken for pain and other things but people in other BB forums have sworn that it helps with BO and BB. It works but you have to keep taking it and you may have to decrease your intake to maybe 2 tablets a day. Just google it online along with body odor and you will read people's testimonies. Now megahydrin and Mycrohydrin are good temporary supplements to use while taking probotics, antifungals and digestive enzymes, those need to be taken for a long time on a regular basis. And either vitamin B-Complex or a multi vitamin on a regular basis. I hope this helps. But also start eating raw veggies or regular veggies, eliminate dairy and red meats, and foods high in sulphur until you get the situation under control.

Body Odor Complaint from Teenage Son

My teenage son has recently (past couple months) starting saying that he smells like poop, however, his sister, nor myself can detect it. He, like you, was taking probiotics and digestive enzymes, but I have recently taken him off those, thinking they were the cause. They were not...but the odd thing is, we don't detect it. He says kids at school make comments, and he feels like he has gas all the time, but refuses to go to the bathroom at school. He does take a multi-vitamin, along with fish oil, not sure if that would cause a problem...it's upsetting - as he was practically in tears this morning when he left for school because of this. I had taken him to see his dr. thinking he could shed some light, but now I'm wondering if I need to take him to a therapist, if this is a phobia.

The smell from Excess gas

I have been suffering from excess gas for over 20 years. The smell seems to stay in my clothing no matter how many times I wash them. I always feel as if I have gas.

I was able to temporarily stop the problem through Accupuncture. I had a very good accupuncturist who told me there was an imbalance in my liver. He gave me an accupuncture treatment that stopped the excess gas, but only for a few days. It felt as if there was some kind of pressure building up inside me and eventually the effects of the treatment wore off.

The only thing I can do to make things less burdensome for others is to hold it in until I can get to a bathroom.

I have noticed some people are more sensitive to the smell than others. My mother is, but my brother is not. All I can do is try to associate with those people who are not bothered by it as much.

In general, I just feel more comfortable being at home by myself than having to be constantly reminded of my problem by having people around me who are always sniffing at me from behind.

I have had the same issue.

I have had the same issue. I have been fired from every job I ever had and interviews are a nightmare. Recently an interviewer held her nose as I spoke and dismissed me... what could I do??? I have taken chlorophyll for the past several years and it does not help much, but better than not taking it at all. I have had the fecal odor since childhood and it has been a rough life as I approach midlife. I workout a lot and could clear out my space in the gym when I sweat.
In the past 2 weeks I have found something that seems to be working, but as in the past, I'm afraid it will come back and am reluctant to say that I'm cured. I started taking FIBER CHOICE supplement tablets, three at night and 1 in the morning even though the directions say to take two per day... two per day did nothing. I went to the Dr and told him of my problem and he scraped my tongue and tested positive for yeast, candida I believe, and prescribed antibiotics. After 4 days of taking 4 per day my bowel movements smelled like my sweat and breath did. That lasted 2 days or so and since then my breath does not smell of feces nor does my sweat (I hope). People are actually talking to me now and it seems they are dying to ask what I did but don't want to embarrass me (further).
From what I understood from my doctor, the bacteria tries to escape and does so thru breathe, sweat, and urine bringing the fecal odor along with it. Even with strict diets, supplements, and cleansing, the bacteria will remain behind and multiply. Fiber reduces the bowels and antibiotics kill the bacteria. That is MY understanding and I feel better than ever.

What antibiotics did you take, what are the names do you know it would be very helpful. The antibiotics are the ones that could be taking effect instead of the fiber choice.

That's pretty funny because

That's pretty funny because I'm going through the exact same situation. I don't really understand the cause, maybe its social anxiety?

some thought for you

you might want to see if your child is being picked on. I went through a similar situation with my daughter only to find out she was being picked on at school and kids were telling her she stinks!

vinegar smell

Another comment...I too have noticed the smell of vinegar on my body. What is causing this? I am 58 years old and have been going through tremendous stress in my life lately. I have had the fearful thought of cancer going through my head. I live a pretty normal way- eat well, work 40 hours a week, but again, have a lot of stress in my life. I just feel that the smell of vinegar is not a good sign!
Can anyone come up with documentation why this would all of a sudden appear?
Thank you
Sandy.....St Albert Alberta Canada

I have also noticed that I

I have also noticed that I smell of vinegar recently. When I was about 14 I first smelled it under my watch strap but nowhere else. I am now 32 and about a year ago my wife noticed that my feet smelled very sour and vinegar-like. Recently I have noticed that in hot weather my hands and general body odour do too. There's even a vinegar taste in my mouth and i really don't eat vinegar. Noticing others have the same smell and talk of cancer have scared me a little! Has anyone found any information on this at all?
