Are Vampires "Real?"
Vampire myths date back thousands of years and originate from many different regions, from Asia to Eastern Europe, and reach as far back as ancient Babylonia and Greece (1). They are demons, the undead, living off of the blood and flesh of other beings (most prominently humans). They can take the form of many beasts, most memorably the bat. Vampires are characteristically pale, burned by sunlight and deterred with holy water, with prominent teeth and a penchant for seducing their victims. The only way to become a vampire is to be bitten by one. They sleep in coffins and only come out during the night. But what is the origin of this myth, of vampires? Is their origin rooted in biology? Are vampires “real?”
The rare and unusual disease, porphyria, may have been the beginning of vampires (1). Porphyria is a metabolic disorder that causes a malfunction in the production of heme, an iron-rich pigment essential in transporting oxygen in the blood. Symptoms from this disease include hypersensitivity to light, resulting in burning or blistering, psychiatric symptoms (like hallucinations), and seizures (3). People with more severe forms of porphyria suffer from extreme abdominal pain and acute delirium, and, due to irregularities in heme pigment, can have reddish mouths and teeth (1). Porphyria can also cause tissue damage and could make people’s teeth appear larger and more prominent due to gum tissue recession (5).
Traditional treatments for anemias like porphyria involved the consumption of animal blood. As a hereditary disease, porphyria would appear in families, small Transylvanian villages (where inbreeding probably occurred), and groups including the eastern European aristocracy (where more inbreeding definitely occurred; you’ve got to keep the blood line pure, after all) (4).
It is not difficult to draw connections between sufferers of porphyria and the vampire myth, ranging from hypersensitivity to sunlight, to pointy-looking teeth, to acute delirium and other hallucinations. It probably didn’t help that they were told to drink animal blood, either.
Another disease often attributed to inspiring vampire legends is rabies. Rabies is caused by a virus transmitted through wildlife, through an infected animal’s saliva, most commonly bats, skunks, raccoons, and other medium-sized mammals (2).
Since bats are commonly associated with vampires, (a second form), it could be inferred that people who contracted rabies from bats were thought to have been bitten by a vampire.
Rabies causes excessive saliva and foaming of the mouth and uncontrollable, painful throat spasms. The sufferer suffers from overwhelming thirst but cannot drink; they experience restlessness, agitation, paranoia, insomnia, hallucinations, and seizures. Eventually, if untreated, a person with rabies will enter a coma and die (2). It is also common for a sufferer of rabies to experience a hypersensitivity to, well, almost anything: light, strong smells (like garlic), and noise.
So, after a person was bitten by a bat or another animal behaving unusually, (with no fear of humans), they would present with symptoms not unlike the vampire of legend— unable to quench their thirst, hypersensitive to light and strong smells, and unable to sleep (causing them to roam around at night). Now, throw in the fact that the rabies sufferer would probably be agitated and might act violently toward other people, maybe even trying to bite them. As a Transylvanian villager, what would you believe?
Catalepsy, a physical condition that often presented with epilepsy, schizophrenia, and other disorders that affect the central nervous system, could also be attributed to inspiring vampire legend. During a cataleptic episode, a person “freezes up;” their muscles become rigid, heart rate and respiration slow down… they could very easily be mistaken for a corpse (1).
So imagine yourself a mourning relative, thinking your family member dead… when you find them clawing their way out of their casket, seemingly one of the “living dead.” What would you do?
Break out the garlic and holy water, that’s what.
Unexplained behaviors caused by unexplained diseases and disorders could have easily been the origin of vampire legend. It was their biology, not their damned soul or “uncontrollable thirst for blood” that made them vampires. Porphyria, rabies, and catalepsy, among other neurological and physical disorders, could have led people to believe that they were dealing with something, or someone, unnatural. It’s not that the cases weren’t real –according to this evidence, to these different diseases, they were—it’s that the so-called “vampires” were little more than people with unfortunate metabolic disorders, those who encountered a rabid skunk, or cataleptic schizophrenics.
“There are mysteries which men can only guess at,” wrote Bram Stoker, “which age by age they may solve only in part” (6). We cannot say for certain if these diseases were the cause, but through a summary of observations we can at least hope to decipher some of the mystery the creator of Count Dracula alludes to.

We are real...dont quote the vampires. I know you feel we should trust you, but, as vampires, we are a race that prefer to remain hidden. We do not necessarily like humans to know much about us, even the trusting ones. Where there is one that trusts and believes us there is a hundred that do not. We have learned this for ourselves and even though it may not seem fair, we feel it's for the best to keep our identities secret.

Vampires, real or not...
I really love twilight, true blood, vampires diaries, blue blood... Like for a year or so I have been obsessed with vampires. I don't know why my hand just written on the internet : Real vampires from real world and they're it was, this topic. I found it really interesting. I do believe that they're is some kind of vampires in real life. I'm not really scared. I just found it nice to know if it was real, like they're is probably people that are joking all the way... I don't believe in everything but I sure do think that they're is vampires in real life... not as tv or books but they're must be some. And everyone as they're own opinion and that's okay. Well who know ? It's a question on everyone minds and maybe we don't know it for our own good ? Anyway if somebody would know it, they would probably don't tell it.

I'm glad not all humans are
I'm glad not all humans are set in sadly misled beliefs. Just know that Twilight is completely off, her thoughts of vampires is completely off, just like most human's. Now, what I like to think about in most "mythical" creatures is that they have or still do exist in some form. The thing is the stories of them get passed down and jumbled up as they go, then humans turn them into fairy tales to tell children and don't think they are real in any way. You're right to not be scared, we're not evil bloodsucking demons of the night. I may crave SMALL amounts of blood, but I'm never going to hunt someone down to bite them for it. We don't sparkle or melt in sunlight, but we are sensitive to it. For example I get extremely exhausted after short periods in the sun. I believe I am a vampire. And I am sharing this with the world, though I doubt it'll change their hard set beliefs, so the curious ones who believe can know. If there's anything else you want to know, I'll be watching this page and answering questions.

when you posted about being a vampire on this page or whatever, you said i or we can ask simple questions. ok, i am just wondering, are there like rankings for different tyes of vampires, ok i know i just read your comment about not carving large emounts of blood and being monsters of the night and everything and well, are such things as like "level E vampires" that will die if they dont get large emounts of blood or something? is there such things as pureblooded vampires in your world(not like planet, just your life views and such) i read and watched (yes i was influenced by an animated vampire series called vampire knight by matsuri hino, it is made in japan) a pure blooded vampire has many more powers and abilities than lower ranked vampires simply because they have not let their own blood mix with humans and have in bred withing their families to keep the bloodline pure. many vampires of lower rankings are loyal to them as they have the ability to make the lower rankings obey(remember, i dont seriously believe your kind is like this just want to make sure if the author is correct) and the level E vampires fear. after the pure bloods or level A vampires, there are the aristocrat vampires, or level B, who may have a bloodline interfering with humans, causing you to have less power, even if your parents were both vamps, the bloodline was ruined by us lowlife humans. then there are the nobles, or sometimes called "peasants of the vampires"or level C, which is like having a father as a vampire, human and your mother was a level B vampire, vis-versa. then there is a level D vsmpire, there is no other name for it, but it is the slow transformation of being turned into a vampire by being bitten by a pure blood. only a pure blood can turn humans into vamps( i am not stating this as a fact, this is the authors opinion) and only that same pureblooded vampires blod ingested by the victim can stop the transformation, and will make the level D stays as they are, no matter how close they are to falling to level E. before you email a reply to me, i did not make this up i read and watched it from a hit TVseries(now ended) and i was just wondering if that was the truth. these vampires cn go into sunlight but are slightly sensitive to it and it gives them headaches. these vampires attend an academy that as a day class and night class, the night class is full of vampires, who know about the day class being humans, and the day class knows nothing about the nightclass being vampires.only two guardians know their secret. the school was created as a pacifism to make humans and vampires join instead of fight and drink or kill eachother. and in the school the vampires use tablets that have the taste, and supplements in it as human blood and they put them in water and substitute it for blood. it is kinda crazy to you isnt it, but if this is true, then i will believe you. i need to know.

Vampires ARE real
Ok. VampireS are real. We don't sleep in coffins, we don't just come out at night, and we can eat human food sometimes. We don't always attack someone just because they bleed, we do have self control. Vampires won't sparkle or burst into flames when the sun hits our body's. We are stronger than the average person, and can run amazingly fast when needed to. Vampires, like ourselves, can be best friends with humans and the humans will never suspect a thing unless you tell them. That's alot to say to just some random people but you will never know who I am or any of my kind because we have lived in the shadows for many, many years. Trust me, I would know. I am living the life that everyone makes fun of. And so have my sisters. And if you want to meet one, you probably never will. Humans cannot be trusted.

Many vampires are forced to live with humans, it's very rare or impossible for a vampire to be alone. Some vampires are born, others are made, but not all of us are made, remember that. We are not anti-god as you may believe, being a vampire isn't choice, it happens, many of us don't THINK we're vampires we KNOW we're vampires, we have physical characteristics that make it so. Mythical Truth
How many people in this world dream of becoming a vampire after reading Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga? How many girls fell in love with Edward Cullen’s fictional character which of course made Robert Pattinson’s image an instant vampire hottie? Many of us think its crazy yet the endless question of ‘What if’s’ and sincere wishes that these mythical creatures do exist is far from being wiped out.
So let’s say vampires are real. What is the first thing you’ll say when you come face to face with a vampire? Would you ask him his name or will you be scared to say anything at all? Would you run as fast as you can without looking back or stay and pinch yourself to know if you’re awake? There’s really nothing I can come up with but thousands of question.
And when you become a vampire, what’s the first thing you’re going to do? Would you hunt down and kill your enemies? Would you become a “vegetarian”? Do you want to see the world? Just like Bella, are you willing to give up your family and loved ones or opt to turning them like you instead? What if you’re not strong enough to resist your thirst for human blood? Will you become a monster and justify your nature? Will you be able to find some friends? Will you be ready to face that world if it might not even be close to what you have dreamed of? Have you ever thought that you might not exactly become what you expect like Stephenie Meyer’s description in her books? Would you still want to become one if vampires do live in coffins at night, burns in the sun and does not posses angel-like beauty after all? Not to mention you’d live like that forever, literally. I’m pretty sure you’d think twice, thrice, maybe more? Alright, that’s a little bit of an understatement, I guess. These are just some of the few crucial things to consider though since vampirism spells i-m-m-o-r-t-a--l-i-t-y and immortality means eternal boredom and loneliness if it wasn’t what you wanted. Worst if you have nothing to live for. At least, Bella has Edward. Your mind might be clouded with eagerness for infinite damnation, power and beauty to think clearly. Isn’t this a little bit shallow and self- centered motive to crave for this kind of existence? Obviously, it is. We all know that the quest for eternal life is as old as our history and the main reason is the love for oneself and power. Now tell me, why do you want to become a vampire? That’s right, the three basic reasons; immortality, beauty and power. You may already have decided what to do with all these situations or the attitude of crossing the bridge when you get there was the best option you can come up with.
But then again, I can’t stop people from believing that it is maybe, just maybe possible. Besides, this world we live in is full of mystery. Phenomenon of unexplained events and creatures or beings for that matter still lingers around us; which makes life more amazing. These little wonders give human minds something to work on to, right?

Do most of you even know what your talking about?
If Vampires were really what they are depicted in books and movies don't you think that they would have been caught already? There is possibility, probability even, that Vampires can go out in sunlight, maybe they just want the blood not need it, and also did you ever think that they might have a heart beat just like us? If they were so obvious as movies and books depict you could go out on the street and pick them out from the crowd. That I know I am not a Vampire but you never know, maybe I know some. If I do though I can't tell if they are. Well I hope that cleared up at least some of your questions, and put away some of the totally ridiculous myths that are out there. Also the person who wrote the "Careful what you wish for" comment is right. Vampires don't just go around feeding off of random people, they have donors or blood stored somewhere (hidden though) whether that be a blood bank or a hidden refridgerator. They are NOT as obvious as you think. If they are though, it's only because they want to be.
Careful what you wish for
The vampires who roam this earth are not as you woud expect they hide they hunt but are never caught. Many of them carry guns and never use their teeth. They shy away from sunlight and love to reign the dark nights. the battle that they fight has been going for thousands of years. When they feed or kill someone or something their eyes go a bright blue and their fangs begin to show. They don't kill humans they simply feed off them. The vampires own blood banks and places where blood can be sort out.Other people have said that vampires are savage when they feed but the vampires who roam the earth can pour it into a glass and drunk out of like wine. They have elders and only one can reign at a time since there is three of them. They are the most strongest, most fastest, most lithely things you have ever encounted.There are your guards or the Death Dealers who kill that is there job. There is a secret chamber in which is as old as the vampires itself they never enter it unless they are with an elder and always keep it locked away from prying eyes.

Vampires. There are sooo many legends and myths and so on about them, and many people in the world think its just a ridiculous old time legend or scary story or whatever. But I reaaally do believe that vampires exist today. I absolutely LOVE Twilight, and I would like to believe that all of the qualities of those vampires are real but I know that's not how real vampires are. I don't think they burn in the sun or can't be around garlic, but I do think they exist.
Why is it always about twilight?
Okay maybe I don't get teen fiction or I am just too vamped to see the joke. I am a true vampire lover I have been since I was a child, which in there world wasnt too many moons ago but long enough. Twilight was a good LOVE STORY and that was about it. The joke of sparkle skin and no fangs is a childs soother to the truth. Yes she gives a wonderful love story but as for the vampires they were as scary and dangerous as kittens. Fangs and normality to fitting in would have been a more realistic look into the reality realm of Vampires and more of a justice to their way of life.
