Meeting in Rhoads Quiet Study Room

awkwardturtle's picture

I wanted to meet somewhere in Rhoads because I like the feeling of closeness between the Rhoads dining hall and the dorm I lived in when we met there. Usually we create a distance between home and class, and it feels different when the two are close together. I had a hard time choosing between Rhoads QSR and the Rhoads common room, since the common room feels a lot more open but the QSR has better lighting and less distractions. I also wanted to meet in the Rhoads outdoor patio since there is a beautiful view that a lot of students don't see just getting from class to class, but the seats were wet from the rain.

All over creation rough-culture, contact zones, asian cultural appropriation

awkwardturtle's picture

In my essay I will talk about how the environment of the farm brings different groups of people together and creates contact zones. There are a lot of cultural identities in All Over Creation, and I will start with a broad look at cultural identities and move specifically toward Asian culture and its appropriation.

Planning for Prison 10/30

1) Introductions

2) Re-emphasize guidelines (how do people feel about trying popcorn style vs no hands, reassert step up step back) - maybe try a check-in re:where they're coming from and how they learn best

3) Writing a scene that they feel was missing from "Burial at Thebes" [could alternatively expand on a scene that exists] --> reflection --> discussion with small group [broken into who would and wouldn't be comfortable performing]--> sharing with group as a whole [either performing it as a group or just describing it]

4) Assess the space- how are people feeling about Antigone? Do the scenes add to your appreciation of the play?

Inspired by Sweeney: Reflections on Reading Practices

jschlosser's picture

[Over the summer I read Megan Sweeney's book to prepare for our 360. The afternoon I finished the book I wrote the following and sent it to one of my best friends from college who's a voracious bibliophile and librarian at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. She and I have been exchanging letters and emails about books for over a decade. I thought y'all might like to read my reflection.]

On Meeting in the London Room

bluish's picture

As I mentioned in my mass-email, I really like the energy we have in the London Room; it has an ease to it, as if we are relaxing into a routine (and I love predictability). The space has an already-established essence, an interest, but it isn't distracting to the group. In contrast to our inital classroom in Taylor, where we were forced to bring everything to the somewhat-barren space, the London Room came with something more, and our presence only complimented that something. I think our conversational tone was relaxed, despite the bit of confusion about hand-raising and such.

INTERNSHIP OPPURTUNITY!

Joie Rose's picture

Hi All,

This came my way and as I already have WAY too many commitments, I am passing it along to you all considering the overlap it has with our 360. I know it's super notice because the deadling is October 30th, but just in case!

Notes on Monday's Discussion

Joie Rose's picture

The notes that I took are rough outlines of what I heard said in our discussion on Monday. If I misunderstood what was said and I misrepresented your comments please let me know and I will change it. I will also add some of my own thoughts at the end.

Tong: Are we not giving ourselves a chance to confront our own complex personhood? It’s okay when our mindset is not appropriate.

Julia: What is PC- being respectful or adjusting what we say so that no one disagrees with us?

We are much more accepting of others, but it is terrifying to put something of ourselves out there-admitting our faults. And admitting our shortcoming seems to be made real once we put it in words.

10/26 Dinner Notes

mnt's picture

Here are some notes from last night's conversation. Most of these bullet points are comments made by different people. I wrote down a phrase or sentence from nearly every time a person spoke. Many of the bullet points are related/in conversation with each other. Instead of trying to seperate or catogorize the notes, I just left them written in the order that they were said. Hope this is a helpful refresher!

rich reading; exciting writing; prison work; class discussions; support from profs; great interpersonal work

What's going less well:

amount of reading; postings; prison work; class discussion could be better; generally overwhelmed, yet we want to spend more time togeter
