This came my way and as I already have WAY too many commitments, I am passing it along to you all considering the overlap it has with our 360. I know it's super notice because the deadling is October 30th, but just in case!

 

Policy Internship

 

Councilman Bobby Henon’s office is committed to using data and analysis to bring about positive, cost effective solutions to reduce Philadelphia’s prison population issues. The Councilman’s first priority to answer the following question: how can we close the House of Corrections without building a new prison facility? 

 

Councilman Henon is looking for an intern to work directly with council staff, committee member staffs and a coalition of advocates focusing on prison related issues.  The intern will focus primarily on prison population issues, legal procedures and practices, as well as assist with data management and analysis leading to a report on the specific policy recommendations discovered throughout this process.

 

Internship Duties

 

  • Conduct policy related research working closely with stakeholders and City Council Staff;
  • Assist with policy analysis, writing, and editing reports and other relevant projects;
  • Manage and analyze large state and county‐level data sets;
  • Assist with social media and website;
  • Assist with data requests from stakeholders and media; and
  • Other necessary tasks.

 

Time Commitment: Part‐time (up to 20 hours a week) from November 1st, 2015 to April 30th, 2016.  

 

Location: Philadelphia City Hall

 

  • Possess a keen interest and curiosity in social policy research and analysis affecting the Philadelphia Prison population;
  • Experience working with Excel spreadsheets and/or databases (e.g., Access); 
  • Experience conducting basic statistical analyses (means, percentages, standard deviation, etc.);
  • Experience conducting literature reviews and other background research for specific topics;
  • Organized and detail‐oriented while working on a wide range of tasks; and
  • Strong organizational, social, written, proofreading, and oral communication skills. 
  • The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a collaborative environment, which will demand being able to navigate conflicting arguments, perspectives and agendas.
