Silence and talking

The Silenced dialogue:

As the course proceeding, I always see the word silence in noun or adjective form of silent. This time, it’s a silenced. The dialogue is somehow forced to be silent.

The article starts to talk about “The Black Issue”. It’s very interesting to author got complete different feedbacks and response from different groups of participants in the conversations. The while, or the main stream educator, insisted on pos their opinions about Black education. On the other hand, the Black participants stop disagreeing and seem to agree with their logic. They are very passionate talking about being left out from the conversation. It reminds me of many occasions when I tried to argue with my peers about Chinese history questions. I remember amot each one of us was told to don’ try to start conversation about religions, politics or other sensitive topics. Honestly, you cannot win.

As a foreigner come to a new country, there are some rule I have to follow. At the end, growing up in different education background weakens my voice in some academic discussions. Sometimes, I just don’t understand why the standard has to be that. All my doubts seemly can be explained by the term “culture of power”. People with culture power are usually last aware of –or least to acknowledge its existence. (Delpit, 283) Usually those people in disadvantaged positions are the ones who are aware of the power this power hierarchy. People from that group of culture power too often use their assumption to start the conversation. Therefore, it’s hard to the late arrivers to really participate in the conversations.

Who can decide which kinds of language or culture is better? People usually say that there is only difference but no superiority. However, in order to succeed in the society. There are rules or patterns you have to follow. And usually, these rules or standards are in the hand of whites.

I am glad to see as our courses go on. I see more overlap between Silence and Voice. We also talked about the role of listening. An effective listener, should not only listen to the words the person is speaking but also really tries to listen between line with open heart and eyes. Listening is an active actions rather than the simple recipient. We have to be aware the limitation of people’s different level of expressions.  More importantly, you need to be able to listen without your belief discrimination.

Teachers are important people in students’ growth and re really responsible to initiate a true dialogue.

Speech and Silence: An analysis of the Cultural Practice of Talking

Is talking always an active of exchanging intelligence or just a way of filling the blank? I have to admit that even in college, there were moments in class that I just can’t process my peers’ distributions because the lines just didn’t connect with the topic and even didn’t sense at all despite the usage of big words. At the same time, there were times when I spoke for 10 minutes and really didn’t make a point.

How to initiate meaningful talking among student to reach for best education outcomes has been a topic educators are trying to figure out. There are many perspectives towards the acting of talking. Talking not only shows a person’s opinion towards certain topics because reveals a person hidden profile, including the psychological state, intelligence and culture background.
