Sleep Paralysis: Awake But Still Asleep

Hiro Takahashi

A person may wake up and find himself unable to move or speak as if he is frozen. He also may hear footsteps, see a ghost-like creature, or feel someone sitting on his chest. Throughout the history, people considered this phenomenon as work done by evil spirits. However, the modern science can explain the terrifying event as a Sleep Paralysis.

A Sleep Paralysis is possibly a hereditary disorder in which one experiences very frightening seconds or minutes of total body paralysis with little respiration and eye movements (1). A victim in this state feels awake, but he cannot move or speak (2). In addition to the immobility, the common symptoms include feeling choked or suffocated, hearing strange noises like footsteps and voices, seeing beings or dark shadows, and feeling an existance of someone in the room (1). Although these symptoms often direct the victims to believe in ghosts, mistransmission of neural signals in the brain causes Sleep Paralysis. When a person sleeps, his brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contraction (3). If he comes into consciousness before the brain sends signals to activate muscle contraction, he cannot move his body, and consequently, become "paralyzed"(2).

In order to understand how a body becomes paralyzed while the person is awake, it is necessary to understand sleep cycles. In a mammalian sleep, the brain activity undergoes two different states called non-REM (NREM) sleep and REM sleep, which differ very much from wakefulness (3). NREM and REM sleep alternate cyclically through the night; in human, about 80 minutes of NREM sleep starts a night of sleep, about 10 minutes of REM sleep follows, and this 90 minute cycle is repeated about 3 to 6 times during the night (3). During NREM sleep, a body produces few movement, but the body has capability of tossing about in bed and producing some other motor events, such as sleepwalking and sleeptalking (3). The cardiac-muscle contraction and breathing occur at a uniform rate, and the eyes move slowly (2). During REM sleep, on the other hand, heart rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure vary (3). The eyes move rapidly because most dreaming takes place in this period, and the sleeper probably "look" at the moving objects in a dream (2).

The brain's control over muscles during REM sleep points out that in this period, a body is normally in the state of total paralysis, called a "nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis" (3). Probably to prevent a person from "acting out" a dream, the brain sends signals to inhibit any muscle contractions (2). Although some peripheral muscles, such as the muscles of the fingers and face, still twitch, the large skeletal muscles become relaxed, or "paralyzed" as a result (3). Some evidence supports that the motor paralysis of REM sleep protect against the acting out of one's dreams. A patient who suffers from rare syndrome called REM Sleep Behavior Disorder lacks the normal nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis, and he acts out violent dreams during REM sleep, often with injurious consequences (4). For example, a 60-year-old surgeon dreamt that he was attacked "by criminals, terrorists, and monsters who always tried to kill [him]" and fighting against them in the nightmare, he was actually punching and kicking his wife who slept in the same bed (4).

A nonreciprocal flaccid paralysis during REM sleep is accomplished actively by postsynaptic inhibition of motorneurons (3). Although the exact process of motor inhibition is not clear, some neurotransmitters and hormones are known to generate the many components of REM sleep. Aministering physostigmine, an inhibitor of the catabolic enzyme, increases the concentration of acetylcholine within the neurons in the pons, making it possible to artificially generate and start REM sleep in the middle of NREM sleep (3). Carbachol, the cholinergic agonist, produces a period of REM sleep in cat when directly injected into the pontine tegmentum (3). The hormone melatonin, a "master hormone" (5) that mainly controls circadian rhythms, also seems to play an important role in enhancing the REM state; the level of melatonin secretion by the pineal gland reaches its lowest during REM sleep (5). Such neurotransmitters and hormones probably activate or inhibit the activity of second messengers, which then activate or inhibit the third messengers, and so on till the last messenger inhibit the synaptic transmission or cause hyperpolarization of the motorneurons. And if, for some reason, the nervous or endocrine system continues to release the neural inhibitors, a person may experience Sleep Paralysis as he enters awakefully into or awakens directly from REM period (2).

While the modern neuroscience can describe the state of Sleep Paralysis as some errors of the neural transmission in the brain during REM sleep, a person who has seen or heard ghost-like figures/voices may easily believe that eveil spirits fully controlled his entire body. However, the images or noises, which the victim believes that he has seen or heard, are most likely hallucinations; and hallucinations, too, can result from the brain activity. In the 1960's, the Canadian neurologist W. Penfield introduced that electrical stimulation of the temporal lobe can cause the auditory hallucinations in the wake state (5). The buzzing or ringing sounds in the ears and other auditory hallucinations are closely associated with the activity of the auditory cortex and involves the temporal lobe (5). During the early period of sleep paralysis, the activity of the temporal lobe increases significantly, sometimes inducing hallucinatory sense (5). Similarly, the visual cortex generates internal visual stimuli, causing the victim to "see" terrifying figures during the paralysis (5).

How an episode of Sleep Paralysis induces visual or auditory hallucinations is still not clear, but it seems to have a significant relationship with anxiety (5). For anxiety is a neurocognitive event closely related to both psychological and physical processes, the extreme anxiety or panic may cause the release of several different signal molecules that trigger all kinds of physical events (5). A person experiencing Sleep Paralysis feels mortal fear or extreme panic, and hence, the brain generates and releases internal visual or auditory stimuli, producing hallucinations.

Also, hallucinations during Sleep Paralysis may happen, for one keeps dreaming even after some parts of his brain wakes up directly from REM sleep. Since the nervous and endocrine systems continue to release the neural inhibitors which sustain the paralysis, it may be possible that those systems keep releasing the neural activators that stimulate dreaming. Thus, a person continues to "see" the images and "hear" the noises produced in the dream that he has just had in REM sleep from which he has awaken.

Understanding more neural concepts of Sleep Paralysis, some researchers now hypothesize that a very rare condition called Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome (SUNDS) may closely relate to Sleep Paralysis (1). Upon the death, a SUNDS victim produces no body movement even though he experiences a myocardial infarction and strong breathing difficulties and should straggle in agony (5). The death may be caused by the extreme muscle atonia during Sleep Paralysis, which is so severe that even the cardiac muscles and the diaghragm paralyze (5).

Until I started researching on this subject, I have believed that the total paralysis of a body is due to an evil taking absolute control over the body. However, the interactions between neurons in the brain can explain this seemingly mysterious phenomenon in a scientific way. Although the explanation is not complete yet, for there are many unclear processes about Sleep Paralysis, the current hypothesis appears to reject the possibility of ghosts on this matter. Of course, it is impossible to completely disprove the existence of "spirits", "minds", or "God" affecting one's behavior. Nevertheless, like Sleep Paralysis and SUNDS, many or the mysterious conditions and behaviors which are only explained in supernatural terms probably result from brain.

I have been trying to figure out what was going on in my sleep untill i read this. Now i am happy to know what my body was expeiencing. It's quite scary your first couple experiences of sleep paralysis but now i'm gonna stay calm when it is happening to me and try to get my own understanding of the experience ... I have had sleep paralyisis at least once per month for the last 8 years. I am 29 as of this writing. I just had the experience about 1 hour ago and thus has caused me to do reasearch about it on the net. I noticed that many Dr.'s contribute this to anxiety, stress and other factors. My question is ... why is there always an evil presence in that concious yet body is still asleep phase? Today I heard a loud static sound, and opened my eyes to a spider crawling all over my arm. When I prayed to God, or said His name (Jehovah) the spider would start to disappear. I finally went thru my mental prayer when I awoke. This leads me to believe that it is more of a spiritual occurence, because I never have positive images while in this paralized state. I know there are many things in which our ancestors thought it was demonic rather than scientific, only to find there was a scientific explanation. However, I think this is different and cannot be simply written off as "scientific". There is not enough proof to show that it is scientific.

About a month ago I had another episode of sleep paralysis and I saw a small presence in the room with me. It was dark, and I could not see it's face (I am getting chills typing about it right now). My question is, why is there always an evil presence not only associated with my episodes, but so many others I have read about? ... Abel, 24 August 2006

I used to have this sleeping disorder when I was a child.  It has come back once or twice with adulthood, but otherwise, it is in the past.  I used to, with great effort, move my hand to my face and pull an eye open, which would wake me up, but sometimes the struggle was too much and I would go on into a deeper sleep.

Since the brain can do this to me, can it also cause me to get migraines just as I am about to wake up?

It seems, as I have discovered, if I get less than 4 hours sleep a night, I do not get migraines.  If I get 6 hours or more, it's about a 90% chance I will wake with a migraine.  Later in the day, I get an hour or two nap and that is the routine as it works.  Doctors just sort of treat the migraine and don't get into the sleep thing I have.  I take MaxAult for the migraines when they do get me.

I woke one time, and just as I woke, I felt this white-hot needle going into my head... bingo.  A migraine in 5 seconds.  That is how they can occur.  I wake with them otherwise.  I figure it my brain doing things it shouldn't.  I have a clean bill of health otherwise.

Thanks for your time.  Have a good day ... Jay, 11 February 2007

I have a question, and hope someone out there has an answer, it has been months and I have thus far failed to find one.  Has there ever been a record of anyone receiving the effects of sleep paralysis without having been asleep?  The reason I ask this, is a while ago, having not slept in a few hours, I was sitting at my computer, and it seemed to have happened to me. Within seconds I was too tired to hold up my own head, and my breathing got very difficult. Then I began to feel a sort of dizziness as my limbs lost feeling, and dropped to my side. after this, the dizziness turned to near blindness. I could see, but nothing would focus, and everything I tried to look at seemed to dart around like a mosquito. By this time I had no feeling in my entire body, could move nothing without quite a bit of concentration, and I could barely breath.  My mother heard me try and make out some kind of cry for help, and found me there spilled into my computer chair. She rolled me to my bed, and poured me into it. Within about 10-15 minutes I had regained everything I once had, but my sea legs did not ware off for another ten or so minutes.  I went to the emergency soon after. I had an E.K.G. and a C.A.T. scan, with no results, and I piss less in a week then the amount of blood they took that night. After basically telling me I was lying, the doctor told me that my symptoms did not fit anything at all.  What I do know, is I have been researching the issue ever since, and can only base my problem on Sleep Paralysis. All the symptoms match. And again, my question....Has there ever been a record of someone under the effects of sleep paralysis without ever having gone to sleep?  I hope you can shed some sort of light on this subject, as it,...well, it freaked me the hell out, and no one has been able to answer me!  Thank you for your time ... I used get this "evil paralysed me" feeling when i was paralysed and usually saw a ghost. i tried to shout or move but no sound escaped my mouth and couldn't move at all. it happened again yesterday and was almost convinced that ghosts/evil spirits were getting the better of me. But, me being a practical and logical guy, erjected this theory and started researching on this phenomenon. I came across this research paper on Sleep Paralysis. This greatly helped me in alleviating my fears. And next time i "see" a ghost during sleep paralyses, ill just laugh at it ;-)  Thanks for the research ... Siddarth, 10 December 2007

Hi Kimberly, I have a medical

Hi Kimberly,

I have a medical background and from what I understand about sleep paralysis is that it can have many parts to it.
It can be simple, as in the body just not waking up and still in sleep mode but the brain is awake.

To more complicated, as with sleep apnoea. The body can actually be hypoxic (lacking oxygen) because of extreme difficulty in breathing due to an airway obstruction (like snoring).

I am pretty sure there is a medical reason behind your mums problem, this is not to say that I am not a spiritual person as I am. I do believe its just there is also a very simple medical explanation the makes sense to me. Go get you mum checked out, this is the wisest decision.

As an aside, my partner experiences these and they are very bizarre. He quite often wakes up and sees his father (dead) at the end of the bed and cannot move. But somehow he manages to still speak and asks me to wake him up! :)

We are very curious creatures aren't we?

Your mom

Hello, My name is Zachary Hicks and I noticed that your mother is having major trouble. Some people say it is real while other discount it as a sleep disorder of some sort. I want you to know ahead of time to not go to a medium for help at all. I cannot nor do I want to force you at any point to take my advice. But regardless of that, I feel that whatever this experience was you should never go any type of spiritualist for help. I am Christian and I don't know about anything exta spiritual myself. What I do know is that the spiritual forces around us are not to be tampered with at any time because we can never know whats on the other side or in the room with us. A medium uses a connection with spiritual things to get answers for their customers (some are absolute bogus while others may actually use powers that we otherwise don't want to know about). I know that the only safe connection to the spirit world is through God whom I know. I suggest that you two pray about this problem fervently as well as your mom especially if it happens again. I have heard that speaking the name of Jesus during these experiences stops the experience all together. I know God's power to be true and real, again you don't have to believe me but I want for you to be safe and fearless as well as I do want your mother to be the same. I also suggest to read the bible every night before you and her go to bed and pray for safety and the presence of God rather than something else. Maybe all of this sounds strange to you I don't know, but what I do know is that your mother will be delivered from this horror as long as she continues to stick close to God and ask for him to stay close to her rather than the presence of evil. I want for you guys to be at ease and at peace with confidence and no fear to sleep at any time. I will pray for you guys as well. My e-mail is if you ever need to e-mail me for whatever reason.

sleeping paralysis

Hi. I am 13 years old and I suffer of this. It feels like a hallucination you can remember I try really hard to get my hand to my face and open an eye but they shut again as if they're meant to be that way. I can't move or yell or cry I can only get a tiny sound out of my mouth. But my lips feel glued shut. I can't move my legs or arms or anything. I feel vibrations everywhere and something sitting on my chest holding my neck.

Me too

I have had experiences like this for 8-9 years. My sister told me of these "demonic presences" she would often feel at night and wouldn't be able to move. As soon as she moved out of the house I started to experience them. I had recently become a Christian and had a dream. Long story short I was in a circle in a crowd I knew I shouldn't be with and felt a had on my leg, I tried to remove the hand and couldn't, I looked over and a very angry man said to me "what..I can't touch you anymore" I yelled "no, you can't!" I woke up and wasn't able to move and felt a sharp horrific pain in my groin. It lasted for less than a minute but it was terrifying experience. Since then I have the experience of not being able to move, feeling as though something or someone is holding me down. Sometimes I hear or see things. It will often happen several times in a night. The other night a demonic voice called my name. I have been convinced that these are evil spirits tormenting me. My husband says they are simply nightmares, but when they happen I feel 100% aware! I did some research on the internet and felt somewhat relieved that there was a "scientific" explanation for my experiences. However, now that I read so many similar experiences from you all I have to wonder about the similarities of our experiences and a common "evil presence". It doesn't make sense that having trouble shifting in and out of REM correctly would create a common demonic/evil experience.

Annette's picture

This is a demonic spirit(s).

This is a demonic spirit(s). Are you born again? Even if you are, you must examine your past for any occultic practice, such as fortune telling, horoscope, Harry Potter, hypnosis, etc. This opens the door for demons to enter. When you turn to the Lord Jesus and believe and follow Him you must confess all things that you had to do with the occult. Name them, repent, ask for forgiveness, then command that the demons leave in Jesus Name, and then praise the Lord Jesus in thanks. If you do not do this the demons have the right to stay in you. Also confess generational sins and ask for forgiveness. You do not need to know what they are, the Lord knows what they are. After this you need to go to each and every corner of your rooms/house and with oil command all demons to leave in the Name of Jesus, then sprinkel the oil and bless your home in the Name of Jesus. You will be set free. If ever a demon attacks you while asleep, call on the name of JESUS.

Jesus is not the answer. If the devil is calling for you just go with it. Its not that bad. The terrors stop once you get a little satan in your life.

I have been experiencing

I have been experiencing these episodes for the majority of my child hood. Mines was just as extreme as others, But in most cases worst. In my old house in new york 2 people past away in my room. A father and son, I didn't find out about this until after i starting dealing with these episodes. Once I woken to silence but my girlfriend was laying right next to me. At the end of my room i saw a body walking towards me, It stop right above me. as i tried to yell, nothing came out. I starting to moon louder and my girlfriend woke up and starting to shake me until my symptoms disappeared. Another time i was in the bed by myself falling to sleep and then it happened, I was paralyzed with a heavy weight on my back. I tried to fight and resist the feeling, then it felt like some one picked me up out of the bed and started swinging me around the room for about 30 sec. I literially heard the sheets moving forcefully, One of the most tramatizing experiences i've ever come across. one of my last episodes happened when I was an adult, i lived in these nice apartment that just so happen to be not so far away from a graveyard. when i went to sleep that night i awoke suddenly to find my self paralyzed. I felt like there was someone forcefully putting their arms into my back. As the fear in me reached its climax I heard the sound of breathing in and out in my ear. keep in mind i am a grown man from the bronx, and i have never experienced anything as horrific as those episodes in my life.

Horrifying Ordeal

My self and majority of all my moms family members, of all ages and genders, have experienced a situation similar to what others have wrote about. Where you can't wake up and it feels like something is holding you down. You cant move or scream. My grandmother told us to put a bible under our pillows (oh and we should read it to time to time). I dont know if this will work for any body else but it has worked for all of us. But if we for get to put a bible or cross under our pillows. We know we will go through a horrible knight and we always do! If I'm some where else and I for got to bring my bible I don't go to sleep. When I use to have them situations I pray someone would wake me up or the house or my cell phone would ring.lol. I had that situation the other day ,that's why I decided to look it up know. Like I assumed I looked under my pillow and someone had moved my bible. My little nephew had stayed over so I knew he must have forgotten his.lol. When he was 4 he came to me describing his problem. I knew exactly what to tell him.

horrifying ordeal

I've been experiencing these episodes off and all throughout my life but recently they have become more n more dramatic .First i would wake up because the energies n the room were thick , i couldnt speak or i couldnt remember prayers ive been saying for since i was a child, i would scream but no sound would come out my mouth, there has been so many time and episodes since moving to my apartment that i am n now , in the last two week , ive encountered it twice, once i saw it and i grabbed my bible i was holding on to it tightly and telling it to go away i saw fingers trying to pry my fingers from the book that one of the pages tore, when it came back night before last i grabbed my bible again and it went away, i'm sorry but i'm not convinced that this is some kind of sleep disorder, because there is a conscious reaction to the energy! there has to be some other answer we havent explored!

Night Terrors Attacks

Dear Being the Love, My heart goes out to you.No, you are not crazy and this is not just a nightmare. Many of us are attacked by demonic beings when we are most vulnerable, sleepy and tired. Usually we are attacked when we are either actively doing the Will of God and are therefore a threat to the kingdom of darkness works or right before or after we become truly redeemed and don't yet have much knowledge of The Word. You grab your Bible because you instinctively know it contains the Word. It is the Word these fallen spirits fear along with our use of the Word or especially living by it. Now days these fallen spirits are all over as more people call out and invite them into our world as if they are needed.Pray that your spirit will call out for Jesus even when you are asleep. Pray out loud in praises. Believe you are protected after you ask for this. Bless your house. Ask God to reveal anything that might be opening a door of invitation (permission) to them...such as our own sins, addictions, people around us,lack of seeking His voice...It's not true that if you ignore the devil he won't be interested in you. It's not enough to just believe that Jesus is the only Messiah, even the devils believe this and tremble as they evoke their cruelties. And, this sounds weird, but plead the blood of Jesus all over you, yours, home to establish all belongs to Jesus. Remove evil things out of your home...yu-gi-o cards, pornography, think about it and you'll know what the evil spirits like to work through to get our minds and hearts off what is for life and in to what is destructive or anti-life.I better close, not sure how much I'm allowed to write.I pray for you, you must be very special and precious to the Lord!

Why I haven't conducted this

Why I haven't conducted this search sooner is beyond me, considering I'll google just about any mundane thing that comes to mind, or in conversation...i'm freaked out that so many people are experiencing this thing and the descriptions are almost identical...i haven't read all the posts, and have only spent about an hour here, but one thing i've experienced is extreme full body itching...something similar to pins and needles, but more of an itching or buzzing sensation from head to toe, last for about a minute.. interested to read others experiences

First time it happened to me was in the morning i was waking up when i felt an arm go round me thinking it was my boyfriend i thought nothing of it until i opened my eyes and realised he would have already gone to work i couldnt even move a finger let alone scream! That has happened twice.

The therd time it happened i woke up and it felt as if someone was pinning me to the bed trying to rape me. i couldn't move or scream then then i managed to turn over and i didnt move for ages for fear of finding someone there as soon as i could move i got dressed and left the house as soon as possible and couldnt sleep for ages.

NOT SP

I was 18 when it happened. My friend his Father and I left to Austin for the weekend. The very 1st night we stayed at the Hotel. It had two beds in there. Him and I slept on one and His Father slept on the other. As I was laying there already dreaming I suppose... Something just grabbed me and choked me. I saw the dark figure above me and I felt as if I was awake. I couldn't move or even function. Not even speak! It was so hard to even move a finger. But when I did I reached out for my friend and kept saying his name.. "travis....travis...." But he just layed there asleep. Finally It just let me go. Then I got up and went into the restroom and got in the shower to come back to reality. Soon I saw a black figure coming towards the door. I walked towards it and it went back as if it was waiting for me to lay back down. I walked back to bed all wet and seeing his dad and him. I lay down and .. THere it Was AGaIn!! Choking me. I called out to God and it let go. Something I should of done way before. But it worked. I stayed awake after that. Maybe all these things happen for a reason. There is a Pastor that once said, "if the devil keeps messing with you, it probably means God's trying to use you and he won't stop messing with you because there's something Greater in you that God wants to use!" Just put it to work. Try God. It's hard to believe but look around. It did happen.

Kym is back hi everyone : Bad News I had SP last night

I was two months of freedom from any SP episodes. If you've read my previous posts you will see I've been updating basically telling you all my progress. Well, last night (9-5-10) around 4am I experienced SP .. It was a minor encounter - no auditory noises. I felt something behind me.. And I immediately shook it off. It happened again shortly (10 mins later).. And I shook again..
Something touched me..
I've been stress free, working out regularly, and eating okay.
I feel like we all share the same experiences and that's odd.
I've seen dark figures - swirly dark figures ..
I've heard raspy voices calling my name, laughing, speaking in odd languages ..
I even heard growling that went "Char! char! Char!"
And my SP episodes have been going on since I was 11. I'm 28 & soon will be 29.. & it worries me.
I can't fight this forever. The intensity is stifling!
What can we do?
My family thinks I'm crazy.
Sighs. If I didn't have this board I would lose it. They better keep this up / it's like therapy ..

SO scary...

OK, well this has only happened to me twice. The 1st time was about a year ago and I was sleeping with my boyfriend I started to feel this intense tingling sensation running from the bottom of my spine up to my neck/shoulders/head area. Then I got this feeling that my mom (who is still alive) was standing right in front of me but I couldn't move to see her. Well, I just brushed this off as a weird dream b/c it's never happened before. But last night I started getting that same chilly/tingling sensation again going all up my spine to my neck, and I started to hear a weird buzzing noise in my ears, then all of a sudden I could hear this VERY distinct whispering noise in my ears and I could feel there was another being in the room w/ me and my bf. It scared the S#!& out of me and I couldn't move!! When I finally woke up I asked my boyfriend if he heard the whispering too, but he just looked at me like I was crazy!! And I thought I was until I found this website, and I see I'm not the only person who is going through this stuff!! Why does this happen?? And is there a way to prevent it???!

Solution

Whatever you do DO NOT IGNORE IT!This causes whatever was bothering you angry and will start hurting you it happened to my uncle once he was getting ready to fall asleep then he felt something behind him he wondered for a second then he just said "screw it im going to bed" In his head this made whatever that thing was angry and it hit him on the back of the head he was paralyzed he couldnt talk or move.So Why not before going to bed dont be stressed,Be relaxed that the day is over time to take a rest,Relax Just please,Dont let any ideas of that thing pop in your head because once you do,you cant make it go away,Heres my suggestions,Either Your Place Is Haunted Or Your Just Having CRAZY CRAZY Night Terrors

This happens to me quite often, its so so scary, i feel that someones is there but can not see them, but usually i see the people i live with, up out of bed, getting changed..ect.. i can't move at all, but my eyes can, it starts with me, like a blood pressure check machine, but an all over body one, starts at legs+zooms up to my brain, with no time to do anything, apart from blink very very quickly, i know it sounds daft, but honestley, ive been tackling this for yrs+scared to go to sleep at times, but when im awake it can kick in to,i get the tightness like blood pressure machine, then its like a fit+im not in control of my body+a feeling of blacking out, but ive learnt to focus on something+blink+blink+blink as fast as i can while holding on to something+i beat it+it fades away... another weird thing about it, was when my son was younger+slept in with me, when i was having the paralysis , i new, that if he rolled over my way+his skin touched mine, it would bring me straight out of it, really mental scary experiance mind, doctor thought i was making it up, told me to blow in a paper bag, I said u bloody try, when u cant even move... numpty..x hope this can help .. claire swansea..x

sleep paralysis

hey, i still believe it is evil spirits. in a spiritual realm, people also can inherit demons from ancestors. It is part of being born in sin. sin is inherited, diseases are, and spirits are until Jesus set us free.

I agree im an artist myself

Yeah dude I don't know what is causing all this, I don't feel stressed but still everyday when I try to sleep. It slowly creeps out, I'd hear strange noise at first then comes these really horrible entity sometimes in a figure of a lady I can't really see the face and it would try to choke me. Whenever I start to pray the Our Father, it prays with me like mocking me. This is not normal. Sometimes, I'd feel like I would die, If anybody can help me, please reply.

auditory

I've had the auditory bit following a wakeful state too, but my situation is a bit different. The very same experiences I'd have soon after waking the entire household (room mate and all) would hear during the day (i.e. the entire house heard a sharp double knock on a bedroom door followed by a familiar voice from different locations in the house (me, being inside the door with headphones on responding because I thought it was them).

You can scientifically

You can scientifically explain what happens when a criminal hits someone over the head with a baseball bat too, it doesn't make it any more of a comfort.

I've touched one before...

Ive had "sp episodes" for ten years off and on... & ive seen short thick fuzzy beastly shadows, tall infinitely deep dark swirling figures, women, laughing you name it. I swear one time i felt a womans laugh so sharp behind me it felt as if her scream vibrated my head and neck violently.
After a while i took on a offensive approach, even though the more you fight, the more intense. I'd shake it off through prayer and close my eyes right afterwards like bring it on b*tch. I believe fighting this event over and over mentally strengthened my (subconscious spirit)to the point where I can totally detect and control normal dreams no problem.
"Sps" on the other hand takes practice and an understanding of (what's yours is yours) and yet sometimes still remain difficult but if you really want to move you can move. Just understand outside of the body. Calm down and realize nothing's within the physical form. Yea its terrifying and somewhat painful... just try and take control of whats rightfully yours. Remember your real flesh and bone, stronger than something u can only see during "limbo" Demand it back and pray to be left alone, scream it with force and power. Gives me the chills just thinking about the battle.

Sometimes I can roll off my bed and forcefully stumble around my room. I asked my gf to watch me because I wanted to know if I do walk around. I swear she feel asleep and I seen her laying there, I felt like I had to protect her. I struggled back towards her before calling out her name. She held her arms out and caught me as I collapsed. I woke up and asked her what happened and she said my groaning woke her. I asked if I got up and she said no. I thought about it and I was in the same position.
Now this last time was real different. It felt in charge and didn't go away with prayers. It was hugging me from behind and it was speaking to me in some weird Spanish ive never heard before. Super scary with a crazy rumbled distortion. Even though I couldn't understand what it was telling me, I felt the mood intensely. It was a feeling of beening to scared to disagree. Almost like you better just let me.

After ignoring my prayers it placed its right hand on right shoulder (reminding you its freaking behind me) the whole time rambling. The mood changed to a (you see I told u), but ina scary fear me way. the hand was real large but I couldn't feel the physical weight. Think of replacing the weight with an equal amount of fuzzy hollow tingles, different from that pulling feeling when coming back. with all my might and every damn thing I had, I raised my left hand (which I was laying on) and managed to place my hand ontop of his. I felt something I can't explain. almost like two opposite magnets shocking eachother. What I heard next ill never forget. As I felt it back away it laughed/whined like a heavyset dog yelping. CREEPY. I honestly I'm not churchy but I feel this is sooooooooo not medical. Lets be real, praying helps fora reason. And why the same figures are being seen? Short stubby ones tall dark ones. I mean come on.

Subconsciously were all different as grains of sand. It would be impossible to say stress... stress causes things to vanish through my roof, & your roof & your roof & your roof etc etc. I don't know if one day ill die in my dreams but if I do.... I know it wont be peaceful as they say. More studies need to be done on this. Like electronic sensory esp type stuff. With multiple subjects under heavy supervision.

P.s. my gf said my eyes don't open during the struggle.... therefore I'm not walking around my room seeing this thing physically. Yet I can see and hear tv as if I am. How if my eyes remain closed..... any feed back is greatly appreciated

I FEEL YOU

Mind Bending

Hey everyone my name is Edgar I am 21. I have read most of the posts on this website and I noticed that each story has something similar to one another, one thing that I noticed that keeps being mentioned is the dark figure that most of you keep seeing. Well my story is that this has happened to me quite a few times, the first time this happened to me I was in my bed laying on my stomach with my head tilted to my left, all I remember is that I woke up in the middle of the night and everything seemed normal until I noticed that I can't move a muscle and I tried to scream for help but I couldn't it was as if my mouth was glued shut, the only thing that I had control over was my eyes. I moved my eyes around looking in my room but I didn't see anything out of the ordinary, after a few seconds I fell back into sleep without any control over it. Later when I woke up I had remembered the hole incident and told my mom about it and she told me that this had happened to her also, she told me that it has something to do with evil spirits and whatnot, but I hadn't seen, felt, or even sensed anything evil throughout the hole experience. The 3rd time this happened to me I was in my room again at night, but this time it was different, this time I woke up and again I was paralyzed but I wasn't on my bed I was actually hovering over my bed as if I was floating, I was scared shitless and amazed at the same time, I didn't know what to do if I should welcome this feeling of weightlessness and total emptiness or if I should deny it because it is out of the ordinary and is something that I had never experienced, so eventually within a couple of seconds, I would say about 15 or 20 seconds of being afloat I started to pray because something didn't feel right, once I started to pray to God I felt as if my soul immediately plunged back into my body. After this hole incident had taken place, once I was awake I remembered everything that happened to me and I was in a total shocked and dazed mode because I could believe the fact that I was actually floating. The fourth time this had happened to me was the last time it happened and again I was in my room at night sleeping, and I remember waking up again to be in this state, but this time I didn't feel scared or amazed, I woke up floating and said to myself, "let me see if I can control it" and surely I was controlling where I was floating in my room, so as Im floating in my room I am directing myself to go where ever I want in my room, this feeling felt so amazing to be able to float and control it as if I was in space. So as Im floating I end up hitting my head on the sealing of my room and once I hit my head I immediately fall back into sleep. The one thing that I am confused about is when I was floating I was in such a amazed mode that I didn't look down to see if my body was still on my bed, I don't know if it was my soul that got out of my body and started floating or if it was my actually body. Keep in mind people that throughout all of my experiences I didn't once see, hear, or sense any type of demonic or evil spirits. Oh yes and one time I had a totally different experience, I was sleeping and I felt as if I was half asleep and half awake and my eyes where twitching very rapidly and I remember my heart beating very very rapidly, and the feeling I had was indescribable, the only way I can put it into words it's is if I was about to instantly disintegrate without any pain being felt.

My Experiences

I've had this happen to me alot over the past 10 years. For some reason it usually happens when I have a couple of beers or whan I am really tired. As a kid I remember this would also happen to my dad So I'm thinking this may be hereditary. My dad would have it happen to him more than once a night. One of his friends had the same problem and told him to drink a cup of water with a little salt when it happend. He tried drinking the salt-water and it worked for him. Then I started drinking the salt-water myself when I am really tired and its worked for me too.I dont know what it does or how it works but it does for me. Its been over a year since my last Sleep Paralysis experience. You should try it and see if it works for you.

Hey every one, I too have

Hey every one, I too have expirience sp scence i was young although there was a particular year where by i had them consistanly, due to being chirstian my grandmother adviced to aways have a cross are holy picture above my head which never really help much. I experience everything that most of you do it even happend once in a car during daylight which was a chock to me. Then i realised thad there higher chances of SP when am sleeping at a new place there fore i try not to sleep during sleepovers.

Makayla's picture

.

I also forgot to mention that when i sleep, i breath very quitely, and out of the blue, i hear a few deep manly breaths. i remember when i was younger, i heard a women laughing, and even people saying my name, except this time it was a women. because i was so young, at first i thought it was just the scary adult programmes my mum watched in the next room, but i realised that it wasn't. each experiance is a little different, sometimes the same. when i was younger, it happened alot, except it felt like i was falling down a really deep whole. sometimes, during this feeling, i would dream that i was falling off my bunk, because i wasn't aware of SP at this time, but i realised moments later. a couple of times when i was climbing down my bunk i was actually "awake" but i got the feeling again and i actually fell off my bunk. this is all i can rememeber at this moment from when i was younger. my mum did tell me that i would say that i saw something white in the corner of rooms, or were ever, because "aparently" babys can see ghosts alot better then the normal naked eye of older people. when mum was younger, she would hear foot steps going to the end of her bed and she wouldn't hear it for another 5 or so seconds and it would walk out again. but when i talk to mum about my experiances, sometimes she just rolls her eyes, not believing me. i just wish my mum would believe me. when the next spiritual festival comes , im going to talk to one of the sicics or spiritual people. i want to find out soo badly why i felt that sharp pain, almost like i was being pulled. pleease i beg sombody to reply to me, because no one but my half sister believes me, even my half sisters mum dosn't believe her. this scares me SP. that's why i like company of other people when im sleeping this is the time when it dosn't really happen to me, all though it's happened to me when i'v slept in my mum's bed. but the time when the lady was calling my name was unexplainable. why would she do that to a young girl? i was just a little child.. but any way please reply to me.

Ghost?

I was just 6 years old when it started with me. I know the feeling. 3 or more times a year I would go through what I call an encounter with ghost. Because they often seem bad, but I have not always experienced a bad encounter. I have walked into a room, while avoiding dirty clothes and stuff on my brothers floor, I kept an eye on who seemed to be my brother in his room touching his bed. Taking a few more steps in I looked right at him, he had no face and he stepped right through the closet door. That while I was awake.

While I was 18, I was sleeping in the attack and awoke 3:01 am. I didn't move because I chose not too. While slightly scratching my hand with the other I looked at the foot end of my bed. 2 men appeared standing there. Dark shadowy men who looked to be talking, but no sound, but still interacting with hand gesters to each other. One on the right turned his head to me. Almost in surprized and or aware I was watching. I didn't take my eyes off them till I saw more movement to the further right side of my room. I looked and saw more people walking through my walls like a busy mall. I watched dark type spirits walk through my room for only a minute. Then I moved my eyes back to the center of my foot end. The two dark men where looking back at each other again and that was when I looked at the time and it was only 3:02 am. I looked back. Quiet room. 2006.

I watched one night as a dark man came from the corner of my room, as I lied in bed. This one was sudden. I had no control of my neck, it felt like someone else was turning it for me. I looked and a dark man came from the dark and he walked up to my bed. I watched. He stood still. I raised my hand up towards him. I felt a pressure of more fingers closing my hand from where he stood. I looked at my hand as it closed and I moved it back towards me. He walked off into the dark. It was 3 am. I thought. Can't shake a hand with a closed fist.

When I was 6, I was looking at the light side of the room at night. One window, in the basement. Older brother only 1 year older then me, 7. He was already asleep in his bed across the way. I looked towards the dark side of the room. Dark enough with eyes opened or closed I couldn't tell a difference. I closed my eyes for the last time that night to sleep. Was only a minute later I heard a sound from behind my head coming from between the post of what sounded to me skin against the grains of the post. As I heard it I felt fingers slide up the back my head and stop at my bangs. A grip of hair was grabbed and then polled, then let go, and slipped back between the post. No sound was heard before this or after other then my older brother still sleeping in the bed across from me. Took me about 10 minutes before I slipped the blankets off my face. Since that night I have felt invited to the dark. Never been afraid since. Ironic. (1990, Jan. 10th)

Hey i'm Makayla, and i'm only

Hey i'm Makayla, and i'm only 12 years old. I have had recent experiances, ever since i was around the age of 3 or 4. I would wake up, and i can't move or speak. i can only breath, and blink. When this happens to me, i instantly think of ghosts. I sometimes panik, or i will just feel sick of it happening to me. This has happened to me Heaps of times, especially if i sleep in a house that's not quite right.. i usually see a black figure, and i don't know why i can never move.. it's almost like this thing never lets me control myself when it approaches. I don't know if it's the same black figure that i see when this happens, or if it's different every time. The time that it freaked me out the most was when i was staying at my mums friends place, and i was sleeping on their pull out bed that was in the middle of the room, and i woke up, again, frozen, unable to move, and i could just move my head and the black figure was right above my head, i woke up again later that night and i saw it in the hall way because the bedroom door was open. At my auntys place, this happened to me AGAIN. i woke up, and i saw a black figure move from the door to the end of my bed. sometimes im scared, sometimes i just feel fed up of this happening, but usually im terrified. my most recent experiance that i have no idea what was happening to me was a couple of days ago. i was dreaming and sudenly i woke up and i felt like my something was being pulled out of my body, almost like a sharp pain, but thats all i can remember because i was half asleep, but i managed to fight the frozen feeling and i woke up, and ran into my mums room. it was around 1:20am when i looked at the time. i don't really tell my mum these things, or anybody, because no one really believes me, but i know that i can always pray to god, which is what i usually do. if i feel a ghost approaching me, i just pray that it won't happen. and sometimes it works. but i would really like somebody to tell me what the sharp pain i experianced a couple of nights ago was, and it felt like something was being pulled out of me. i would reallyyyy like some suggestions on what it could of been. please. thank you and god bless you all.
makayla xx.

I've read most of the responses on here and the experiences are all very similar to my own (parylisis, lack of breath, background noices) except, most have described a dark, evil male pressence while mine was blinding white female.
Im 23 and have never experienced any death in my life and I am not under any particular stress?

i'v had dark and white figures appear...

I just experienced an episode last night...i was awake and seen a black figure walk across my room,i had the feeling it was a woman, then i layed my head down and i couldn't move my body, i was breathing heavy, then it was like i was dreaming and there was this guy next to my bed, and i called him minister and asked for his help. then i was trying to yell my husbands name but i could only whisper. when all this is happening i can move my head and look around the room, but can't move anything else.

another experience i had a month or so ago, i have a fan on in my room and i woke up and sounded like someone moved past the fan, then felt like someone was holding me down and i couldn't speak.

another time i woke up in the morning turned over and there was this white figure standing next to my bed, smiling at me, i think it was my grandpa.

Another time i had just turned over to go to sleep and something said my name. it felt like it was right in my ear, but sounded like it was from a distance. i had instant chills up my spine.

it's scary and i want to know if it's spirits or this sleep paralysis. but why would ppl experience figures and voices etc. if it was just us dreaming why dont we see happy things, or like a bike, or cat, or our kids, or somehting that we would dream about other then spirits?

18 & Scarred ;-(

I just had a "SP" about 3 hours ago..I been having them since I were younger so I'm kinda use to them..KINDA?..and I am now 18...the one I just had I can tell I was half awake & sleep..I could see but couldnt move for the life of me..and I saw a black figure..I sleep with my covers over my head and I could see the blackness through it.It was saying something I couldnt understand..with a deep demon voice..but the wierd thing is I started to pray without telling myself to..I kept saying.."In Gods Name I Trust"(repeatly)then I started shaking very badly but still not able to move..felt like a seziure..then I woke up,my heart beat was fast and I felt like I been through alot in that 2-3mins of SP..I got up felt unease so I turned the lights & my laptop on and looked it up..Im glad I found this site. After all the stories I've read no1 has had the Seziure Shakes like me..but if you have had them or have info email me plz. I will try and tell my mom hope she doesnt think I'm crazy_

P.S I dont think its Scientific but I hope it is!

Hi i'm Gloria and I am 18

Hi i'm Gloria and I am 18 like you. I have always had sp since i was a child, but most of the time i forgot that I woke up and couldn't move since I never had any clear hallucination or heard any noises, i sometimes have feelings like someone is lying next to me but that's all. Until a few days ago, I was lying on my sofa and it was afternoon, i fell asleep in broad day light and strangely I woke up and couldn't move and my eyes were open (i usually keep them shut tightly!) so I was like "here it goes again!" and began hyperventilating couse I always fell like i can't breathe i fell asleep again and after what to me seemed two minutes woke un again and couldnt move, this happened several times it was really unpleasant but i couldn't get up cos i was so tired! Until something very disturbing happened, i felt like i was seizuring, like an electric discharge was passing through my whole body. I finally got up cos i couldn't take it anymore, it was the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me!

Sleep Paralysis

Do you think that it could be people in your life somehow using powers against you, and not a medical condition. Cuase i had similar expieriance, mine was a bit diffrent, seems like somebody tries to keep me awake on purpase.

Snapped out of SP

Hi everyone,

Well I'm sure glad I found this page. I am a 29 year old war veteran and I've had SP happened to me a couple of times after the war. And like many, I've found myself breathless laying there without movement or voice. However, yesterday I experienced something a bit weird. I was taking a nap when I realized SP had kicked in again. As my eyes wondered around as I laid there waiting for SP to go away and go back to sleep like always, I saw a dark shadow cutting around the corner of my bed and in a hurry making it's way towards my body. I clearly remember my eyes keeping up with the shadow as I saw it go over my head. I was in deep shock and somehow managed to snap out of SP. I remember not closing my eyes at all and then sat up indian style and immediately took a deep breath and collected myself. I never went back to sleep, i washed my face and left my place. This was not a dream, It was real and I can't stop thinking about it. I'm a bit freaked out and need some direction and possibly an explanation. I've probably had SP about seven times and not once had I been able to snap out of it. Is this part of the normal SP or should i worry about the Evil's of SP? This is the first time I come across this page and the first time I actually learn about SP. My entire body is in chills right now. Very weird!!!!

Hey man, I can totally

Hey man,

I can totally understand your reason af being afraid, i've had sleep paralysis since about 12-13 years old and i'm also 29 right now, i have very often, at least 5-6 times a month if not more...
your sleep paralysis seems very similar like mine, your not even sure if you closed your eye( feel asleep) and you notice those shadows /hallucinations) so your starting to think is this real or not.... ive been to a sleep specialist at a hospital trying to find out whtas going on and so far no luck...because liek i said i have had it for some many years and i never told anyone before (cos ity all sounds so crazy) until ahile ago, my " sp attacks" got so bad, your actually afraid (even as a grown man) to go to sleep...
(and im not the kinda guy who's afraid of anything) man really hope you'll see this reply... because liek i said you SP seems very similar like mine...

Slapped

I've only had sleep paralysis about 4 times over the past year, but everytime I do its not gradual that I get movement back, I generally feel like i've been slapped, more so in the face than on my body, and then I get full movement back. I've noticed that I also only get them when as i'm falling asleep I feel like i'm passing out, any ideas?

Zoloft helps!

A low dose 50mg of Zoloft daily will keep this from happening. If it is as bad you people are saying, which I know it is, then you need to see a Dr. today and get a perscription for it. Within two weeks SP will totally stop.
