HOW DOES MARIJUANA AFFECT THE BRAIN?

AKUDO EJELONU

Pot, weed, grass, ganja and skunk, are some of the common words used to describe the dried leaves drug known as marijuana. Marijuana is a cannabis plant that is "usually smoked or eaten to entice euphoria." (1). Throughout the years, there has been research on the negative and positive effects of marijuana on the human body and the brain. Marijuana is frequently beneficial to the treatment of AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, and chronic pain. However, researchers such as Jacques-Joseph Moreau have been working to explain how marijuana has harmful affects on the functions of central nervous system and hinders the memory and movement of the user's brain. The focus of my web paper is how the chemicals in marijuana, specifically cannabinoids and THC have an effect on the memory and emotions of a person's central nervous system.

Marijuana impinges on the central nervous system by attaching to brain's neurons and interfering with normal communication between the neurons. These nerves respond by altering their initial behavior. For example, if a nerve is suppose to assist one in retrieving short-term memory, cannabinoids receptors make them do the opposite. So if one has to remember what he did five minutes ago, after smoking a high dose of marijuana, he has trouble. Marijuana plant contains 400 chemicals and 60 of them are cannabinoids, which are psychoactive compounds that are produced inside the body after cannabis is metabolized or is extorted from the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids is an active ingredient of marijuana. The most psychoactive cannabinoids chemical in marijuana that has the biggest impact on the brain is tetrahydrocannibol, or THC. THC is the main active ingredient in marijuana because it affects the brain by binding to and activating specific receptors, known as cannabinoid receptors. "These receptors control memory, thought, concentration, time and depth, and coordinated movement. THC also affects the production, release or re-uptake (a regulating mechanism) of various neurotransmitters."(2) Neurotransmitters are chemical messenger molecules that carry signals between neurons. Some of these affects are personality disturbances, depression and chronic anxiety. Psychiatrists who treat schizophrenic patient advice them to not use this drug because marijuana can trigger severe mental disturbances and cause a relapse.

When one's memory is affected by high dose of marijuana, short-term memory is the first to be triggered. Marijuana's damage to short-term memory occurs because THC alters the way in which information is processed by the hippocampus, a brain area responsible for memory formation. "One region of the brain that contains a lot of THC receptors is the hippocampus, which processes memory."(3) Hippocampus is the part of the brain that is important for memory, learning, and the integration of sensory experiences with emotions and motivation. It also converts information into short-term memory. "Because it is a steroid, THC acts on the hippocampus and inhibits memory retrieval."(4) THC also alters the way in which sensory information is interpreted. "When THC attaches to receptors in the hippocampus, it weakness the short-term memory,"(5) and damages the nerve cells by creating structural changes to the hippocampus region of the brain. When a user has a high dose of marijuana, new information does not register into their brain and this may be lost from memory and they are not able to retrieve new information for more than a few minutes. There is also a decrease in the activity of nerve cells.

There are two types of memory behavior that is affected by marijuana, recognition memory and free cells. Recognition memory is the ability to recognize correct words. Users can usually recognize words that they previous saw before smoking but claim to recognize words that they did not previously see before smoking. This mistake is known as memory intrusions. Memory intrusions are also the consequence of THC affecting the free cell of the brain. "Marijuana disrupts the ability to freely recall words from a list that has been presented to an intoxicated subject."(6) For example, if a list of vocabulary words presented to the intoxicated subject and few minutes later, they have to recall the words that were on the list. The only words that they remember are the last group of words and not the words that are in the beginning of the list. This is an initiation that their memory storage has been affected. "The absence of an effect at short term delay times indicates that cannabinodis did not impair the ability to perform the basic task, but instead produce a selective learning and/or memory deficit."(7) I did a study with two college students (Student A and Student B) who both smoke marijuana every other week. This particular study was done an hour before, while and after they were under the influence of the drug. Student A was watching television before she smoked marijuana, was asked which advertisement was splayed before the show started and she got four out of five of her answers correct. After this first section, she smoked a small dose of marijuana twice within an hour. Fifteen minutes after she smoked her last blunt, she continued her regular activity of watching sitcoms. When a commercial would come on, I would ask her simple questions like what happened before the show went to a commercial break. Her responses would be macro-answers about what was going on but when I asked her what the main character was wearing, she did not remember. This was ironic because the protagonist wore a bright yellow suit that my friend commenting on earlier when the show began ten minutes ago. Her short-term memory is weakening because she was only able to remember big picture information and not small picture. Though the results are interesting, I know that I would have had different response on someone else because it depends on how often the user smokes and if they have good memory prior to smoking weed.

Marijuana also impairs emotions. When smoking marijuana, the user may have uncontrollable laughter one minute and paranoia the next. This instant change in emotions has to do with the way that THC affects the brain's limbic system. The limbic system is another region of the brain that governs one's behavior and emotions. It also "coordinates activities between the visceral base-brain and the rest of the nervous system."(8) I am now going to use Students B to describe how emotions are affected by marijuana. Students B is an articulate and well spoken young woman who has a troublesome relationship with her best friends which gets her upset and tense up. But after she smoked one high dose weed, her body was relaxed however, she had trouble formulating her thoughts clearly and would talk in pieces and was jubilant. It has been researched that a person needs to have high dose of marijuana would be in the state of euphoria. High dose of marijuana is measured as "15mg of THC can cause increased heart rate, gross motor disturbances, and can lead to panic attacks."(9) Thankfully, Student A did not experience any of these extreme examples.

College students usually smoke marijuana because they are stressed over schoolwork and feel that marijuana can help them unwind. I have encountered marijuana smokers who are chilled and have no worries in the world but after the effect of the drug wears off, they're sometimes capable to tacking their problem or at the original state that they were in before the drug. The effects of happiness that marijuana usually cause to the user is not a lasting effect because even though a user smokes weed to get away from the troubles of his/her own life, they still have to face these problems after the effects of the drug wears-off. In a survey with college student, an organization called, parents: the Anti-Drug interviewed college students and found that "compared to the light users, heavy marijuana users made more errors and had more difficulty sustaining attention."(10) This was evident through my second experiment with Student B but not everyone who smoke high doses of marijuana experience the same affect.

The chemicals in marijuana bring cognitive impairment and troubles with learning for the user. "Smoking [marijuana] causes some changes in the brain that are like those caused but cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. Some researchers believe that has changes may put a person more at risk of becoming addicted to other drugs such a cocaine and heroin."(11) To prevent such harm, one must be cautious of their actions. Those who do not do drugs do not risk harm. So please the next day you light up, remember you that you central nervous system and brain will be at risk.

I smoked pot straight now since I was 13 years old Im 25 now I smoke it everyday literally through a Bong. I do not smoke well im at work but as soon as im off and for the remainder of the evening till I end up going to bed I do smoke. Now I read your page about the effects pot has on short term memory and brain function, Since I started smoking pot my asthma has vanished my grades went up in school my mind learns at quicker rates and my short term memory is far from gone There isnt much I forget about, unless it is because of my selective memory. Were the people that you tested on already marijuana smokers and also there are diff things to be taken into consideration when testing a substance for example the way it was grown marijuana has to be grown with nutrients and fertalizers to become potent enough to smoke for a high but when people use these fertilizers and such they sometimes do not leech the foods out from the plants which could lead to all kinds of bad side effects Im wondering if this kind of inforamtion is taken into consideration when giving test subjects marijuana to smoke or ingest.

I have no side effects other than a burnt out feeling after smoking all nite, and in teh morning of course but no brain problems like teh ones your website describes ... Chris, 7 July 2006

Yeah...i disagree on a lot of things that you have to say about this. Like for one some of the things you mentioned only happen while you're high, but after the high goes away those things do as well. Marijuana is not addicting like other hard drugs or alcohol. Also marijuana helps people with ADD, makes them focus better, and sometimes learn better. Sometimes when you smoke your nerves are more dull, but sometimes they can be more alive, so to speak. You need to know that everybody reacts to marijuana differently. So these test that your doing don't go for everybody. You need to let people know that or else thats kind of false information. Something that really got to me is when you were talking about how people do it to relax and get their mind of things and once the highs gone all the problems come back. Well once again everybody reacts differently to marijuana. A lot of people when there high talk a lot about there problems and life in general. What I'm getting at here is that while their high they can figure out there problems because being high brings you into a new type of world and you think about everything more carefully. It's like it opens up your brain and lets you think more into your thoughts and about whats going on. A lot of times they can solve their problems like that, especially when there is someone there with them to talk to. Marijuana also brings people together. I know someone who hated a bunch of people, but then one day ended up smoking with them. Next thing she knew, they were all the best of friends. I know a group of people and within that group you've got your "gangster" type, Punk type, goth type, preppy type, hick type, and the list just keeps going. All of them probably wouldn't even talk if it wasn't for marijuana bringing them together. I have a lot more to say but, I'm not going to because I have pretty much proved my point. Also marijuana brings the creativeness out in people. Some of the greatest authors, poets, music artist, painters, and so on, get their great ideas or create there masterpieces by being high.

P.S I would also like to add that I am a chronic user and I could remember your whole entire report on it. I also have excellent grades in school, in fact better than when I didn't smoke. I also would just like to add one more thing: You will not understand or ever be able to know how or what marijuana does to you unless you do it yourself. Trust me I once was all anti-marijuana and always said that it does all these bad things to you and blah blah blah. Well now I actually know how it really does make people feel because I have experienced it and everything there is in that type of world.

P.S.S I do agree with a few things that you had to say ... Jen, 9 November 2006

Hi, I really found this information very useful because it IS a misconvention among most of the college/university goers that marijuana increases concentration and increases the work capacity of an individual. I personally believe that it DOES increase the work capacity of the abuser to some extent, that's when the drug abuser is not in a "stoned" state of mind, but then too, what is at stake is the brain and central nervous system malfunctioning, which degrades the intellectual, job and social skills. So in my opinion, it's not a good deal ... Ankur Gupta, 25 February 2007

allright tell me something if you say a list of say 20-30 vocabulary words and you were asked to read them over, then you were asked say 5 minutes later to remember as many of those words as you can, do you really think you'll be able to do that? no i bet if you asked 100 people to do that that around 90% of them wouldnt be able to do it.

also riddle me this batman, how many people die each year from drunk driving accidents? now dont im pretty sure you've been drunk, and maybe once smoked pot in your life right? well which had a more sever affect the weed or the alcohol? yeah the alcohol!

im a stoner i will proudly say that. but if i have the choice between alcohol and weed i'd take weed anyday. i've driven high that isnt a problem. when im high i drive a little slower then normal and im lookin for the nearest 7-11.

weed isnt a drug it has no addictive characteristics what so ever!!! ciggaretes kill more people then alchol, guns, and pissed off husbands who come home early.

now weed doesnt lead to other drugs what so ever, i've been smokin the stuff everyday for the past 4 years and i have yet to even think about trying other drugs. if mother nature didnt want us to smoke it she wouldnt have put it here!

its as simple as that!! ... Reader on the web, 21 July 2007

Hello, I was told about this site as a friend of mine was completing a research paper. As I looked over it, there seems to be lots of misinformation involved, and my friend has abandoned this site. I wouldn't mind if you read through all of my message carefully. To start off, the following statement is not backed by any scientific evidence what so ever. "Marijuana impinges on the central nervous system by attaching to brain's neurons and interfering with normal communication between the neurons." This has been proven to be false on multiple occasions since the 1970's. Cannabinoids to not not impinge on the nervous system what so ever, this isn't lysergic acid we're dealing with. "Marijuana plant contains 400 chemicals and 60 of them are cannabinoids" This quote right here is misleading. Every plant is comprised of hundreds of chemicals. In fact, they're not even chemicals, they're just substances that comprise the plants' structure. Also, the majority of cannabinoids that are also found in cannabis are produced by the body naturally. Also regarding cannabinoid receptors. "These receptors control memory, thought, concentration, time and depth, and coordinated movement. THC also affects the production, release or re-uptake (a regulating mechanism) of various neurotransmitters." This is simply false, I do not know where this source came from. Your brain does not use cannabinoid receptors for memory, thought, or concentration. Next, saying that "When one's memory is affected by high dose of marijuana, short-term memory is the first to be triggered." is also blatantly false. Marijuana does not directly impact memory, but short term memory only when high off of THC or CBD is affected because the user may be 'distracted' if you will from the plant it self. Also, referring to a 'high dose' of marijuana is ridiculous. There is no such thing as a high dose of Cannabis because there is no possible way to overdose. It is strictly impossible. The most obnoxious quote that i've read from this site is, "Marijuana also impairs emotions. When smoking marijuana, the user may have uncontrollable laughter one minute and paranoia the next." I cannot believe that this would even be published. MARIJUANA DOES NOT CHANGE A USERS STATE OF MIND. PEOPLE CAN MAKE THE SAME RATIONAL DECISIONS AS THEY WOULD WHEN NOT USING THE PLANT. PERIOD. I am actually appalled by what I've read here, and I'm even more appalled by the sources you've used. Unlike true informational sites, you've only used web sources. That is completely absurd. If you look at any reasonable fact site about Cannabis you will see that the sources that are used are mainly from published books and factual citations. Please realize that much of what is on this web page is completely false and misleading. I wouldn't mind hearing a response soon to defend your case ... Spiros Thomas, 7 November 2007

marijuana is a class c drug.

marijuana is a class c drug. alcohol is a class b, yet you can buy it freely in "watered down form"
i mean, an 18year old can but something 6% off being a pure class b drug over the counter at your local liquor store?
marijuana isn't bad, it's the constitution and mental state of the person using it. yes marijuana is a drug, but you can get prescribed far worse from your local gp.
you've got to be in the right frame of mind, not an emotional wreck.
moderation is key

I have epilepsy and marijuana helps me from going into major grand mal seizures. I do take prescribed meds also but they do not work the same. If I am having major or minor petite seizures I can smoke some weed and those disappear and prevent me from going into the major grand mal seizures. Some states now they do prescribe marijuana and unfortunately not where I live. Freedom!! Genesis Chapter 1 verse 29. Read it if you have not. Thanks

Government Propaganda

@ the comment Weed can ruin your life.

I can promise you that those people were not high on weed. Ever smoked? Try it I can guarantee you won't want to fight. They were most likely acting high or if they were acting stupid. I have never ever meet any pot smoker that wanted to get violent. I am not saying you can't get a high guy mad but it very very difficult as his mind might be on food, sleep, or just thinking about life in general.

I also would like to point out that I have been smoking for many years and I go to college as well. I have 3.8 GPA(Sorry couldn't get the 4 and be perfect lol). How does it affect my memory. I know people who have never smoked weed and my memory can put there's to shame.

I love weed; but it is a war that won't be won. Government has been sponsoring anti- weed propaganda for a long time and because of it people will never know the truth since the majority of people seem never to look outside the box. The reason why weed in my opinion is bad because billions upon billions of our tax payer dollars been spent against it for many years. That means we will have to wait till the generation dies out and we keep trying to educate kids about the truth. I mean let's not abuse it, weed to me is not addicting but doesn't mean everyone needs to be smoking it. If the person who is telling the truth about "Weed can ruin your life" is telling the truth; I can promise you they are not, but then just regulate it.

I guess my point is it's easy to make a group of people believe something has such a horrible effect; especially when our tax's were paying the war against it. When you spit the crap out about it for many generation the majority of the population will believe it. Kinda how we also thought we were the center of the universe or white men brains were bigger than everyone else. Oops turns out it was just haters saying all of that. So instead of believing someone that has been paid to find everything against it(which is what happened); why not make your own conclusion's and smoke some?

Interesting

Well, I would have to say that there are surely some interesting points made here. First of all I have been a "smoker" for well over 10 years now and have always thought of weed as a great thing. I smoke at least once a day and sometimes much more. I have defended it over the years and still continue to defend it to this day. Recently, however I have been trying to sort out a few things in my life and now believe that marijuana may be playing a part in a few of the stumbling blocks I am encountering. I am a married, small business owner with no children who enjoys the outdoors and many different kinds of social activities. Of late I have been trying to stay more focused on things and I am finding it very hard to do so, I will go full blast at something to the point of obsession and the all of the sudden will just completely loose "the drive". At this point in my life it is really starting to have an effect on my professional and personal life. I feel like I am always fighting myself, trying to get a grip on my priorities in life while still following my ambitions and dreams. I clearly understand that marijuana is not the root of all evil, but I am starting to think that it could be playing a part in my emotional and psychological hurdles.

It seems like many of you are young and at the beginning of your mature lives. Think about this:

-You will always have to look over your shoulder and wonder who knows that you are a smoker, whether you admit this to yourself or not.

-Unfortunately, it is not a legal activity so you will have to worry about that aspect and while you may be rebellious at this time, this might not be what you want 10 years down the road.

-It cost money, the longer you smoke and the more money you make, the more expensive it could become.

-If you smoke it, it can and will do damage to your lungs, period. (Just look at the resin on the end of that roach or blunt)

-It is possible to have some form of dependence on it. (My wife can tell when I have not smoked it in a few days) When I find myself running out or getting low there is no higher priority than getting some more.

-The potential ramifications in any kind of professional life and relationship you have can be damaged. I don't care how many professionals you are involved with who "smoke", your credibility as a whole could be harmed.

Think about what you want your life to be like down the road and make the best informed decisions that you can.

I have smoked pot for almost

I have smoked pot for almost two years now. I smoked pot every day for a year straight, and that sucked, for I didn't feel very healthy, I felt blurred, unfocused, and almost too passive about everything. However, once I started cutting down the rate that I smoked it, pot became enjoyable again. I'll only partake in it on weekends, just like alcohol. Also, I stopped for three weeks straight, immediately after that whole year of overconsumption, and did not feel any withdrawl affects. However, I had also been smoking ciggarettes during this time, so when I tried to stop smoking ciggarettes, I would get cranky, unfocused, and extremely stressed out and negative. If ANY of you are arguing For or Against marijuana consider wether you smoke tobacco or not, that might have a large factor on addiction and opinion. My short term memory is only temporarly affected when I'm high, but that just causes me to not focus on little things, like keychains and coffee mugs. I can still remember most of where I was and what I did the whole day, just not the conversations specifically. When I'm sober, I'm back to myself (not saying I don't like who I am when Im high). Also, I'm not pulling the "Im still a genius card", on the contrary, I've been getting progressively worse grades since grade 6, usually going down 5 to 10 percent every year until the end of grade 12. I only started smoking pot at the end of grade 11. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Marijuana is good in regulated ammounts, like almost anything on this planet. It has proven medicinal values(such as stopping glaucoma, relieving pain for cancer patients and those with arthritis, holding off MS, and increased eyesight quality and metabolism) (I dont have cites to this information, except for a documentary called "The Union", and various websites that dictate the actual process of the studies, to reveal any bias), it's a fun recreational drug if you don't create a dependency for it to solve your problems, and creates an alternate state of thinking, and creating opinions, which might be good for those who are hypocritical and closed minded. There's alternate ways to avoid obvious health problems, such as baking it into food, or using a vaporiser, which take the lung problem dangers away. It can connect people and dissolve the clique barrier in high school, and can give some people inspiration or creativity. Yes, there's more of a risk for smoking it due to not knowing the contents of it, but you can always grow your own organically. The key is descretion and the obvious option of choosing wether to ingest it or not. Give people the choice, but control it, set an age, and grow it under proper conditions without any additives. It's basically a vice (not a very harmful one at that) that people should have the choice to use, because if we live in a society that feels we are not responsible enough to make our own decisions and take care of ourselves, we are nothing more than sheep. Stop the senseless and overblown debate that is weed and just legalize it.

i agree with you harry i have

i agree with you harry i have always been a firm believer in free choice and still am but here are a few "observations" on my addiction and it isnt an addiction for everyone but it is for me. keep in mind that i have smoked alot in the last 15 years (alot) also mabey these are personal problems and in no way "the drugs fault" but they seem to get easier the longer i quit . keep in mind most of these problems are when you stop taking the drug
- attention almost zero hard to focus even days after
-multitasking much harder
-0 to 60 in .2sec (easily angered)and become violent
-night sweats cannot sleep 3 days after then again about a week
-controlled by negative thoughts seems like i stress my self out
-want to do more

in conclusion pretty much every thing the gentlemen at the top of the page said is correct now i didnt do any fancy study or test groups or placeboes im just a simple contractor who has learned his own body and 2 all you young machines out there who think "that will never happen to me" good luck

I commend you for realizing

I commend you for realizing what Pot may have potentially done to you,and you are absosolutely right.if i can make a difference in your life i will tell you STOP PLEASE, dont smoke pot any more.I have copied my posting so you can see my experience and how pot has damaged my son....good luck....this is a stranger who is proud of you

I am a middle aged woman and i was pot smoker back in my days when pot was in its natural estate and to grown in labs like it is now full of chemicals that are very harmful for the brain. I have been struggling with my son for the past several years and have seen how pot has been eating away from his gift abilities and has crippled him until he developed Bipolar Disorder which now rules his life and he is not able to accept. You young people think this is funny, but is not!The brain is a very precious thing and if you abuse it it will turn on you eventually, the brain is what makes us human. When you stop pot you will never accomplish your full potential, i dint care how much you try to lie to your self, I have seen it over and over again.Yes given! pot does not make everyone psychotic, but unfortunately it does to some .So if you have a friend that gets annoyed when he or she smokes pot, do them a favor and stop them, talked to them and you will potentially save their life.....The hardest thing for a parent like me, is to see your child and not be able to do anything about it

Cam's picture

Hahaha

That comment is so incredibly full of shit, that it's actually funny. Like, "Ha ha, funny joke" funny.

"weed is addictive u cant say its not cuz none of u can quit"

First of all, I CAN say it's not, thank you.
Secondly, how would you know?
Have you talked to, literally, every marijuana user on the face of the earth? No, you haven't, because you've never talked to me. I have never met a marijuana user who physically cannot quit smoking ganja. Never. Ever. Ever. EVER.

I CAN quit smoking marijuana. I've done it before plenty of times for different reasons ranging from work to family.

"Well if you can quit, why don't you then!? HMM??"

Because I don't fucking want to! Why would I stop doing something that makes me happy just to prove to you that it's not addictive?

That's like saying "Duhr! You're addicted to having sex with your girlfriend!"
Someone rational would be like "Um, no I'm not."
"Well then why don't you stop having sex with her forever!?"
"Um, because I LIKE to have sex with my girlfriend?"

And even if I, or another marijuana smoker, DID quit smoking marijuana for, let's say 6 months, just for you. You STILL wouldn't be convinced that it's not addictive because facts have no bearing on what comes out of your bullshit-propagating mouth.

"the only people that would fight that weed is good for u are pot heads that have no fuckin life"

Oh, is that so?

Try saying that to Joe Rogan: A brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a brown belt in 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, host of Fear Factor, co-host of The Man Show, prominent (and very funny) stand-up comedian, actor, and color commentator for the UFC: Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Yeah, he has no life, whatsoever.
And Joe is just one, out of many, examples.

You're an idiot!

Wow I know this is a really

Wow I know this is a really old blog post making this a necropost but just look at how the one person here in the comments attacking weed uses such perfect grammar and displays such a higher level of intelligence as compared with the "pot heads that have no fuckin life". I used to be all anti-weed and believe the propoganda but now I smoke it "socially" with friends maybe once every 3-4 weeks and if someone offers me some and I'm simply not in the mood all I have to do is say "No thanks" and pass it on.

From all the comments I can

From all the comments I can see a couple of different points. Whether on not marijuana will have a negative impact on your life is determined by two factors; First, are your productive at doing whatever it is you do (school, work, etc...) while your blazed. If the answers yes, than marijuana will probably have a positive impact on your life. If the answers no, the second question you have to ask yourself is can i control my use to the point where it does not adversely effect my life.

In my personal situations (avid pot smoker since 15, now 22) it has adversely impacted me. I can't control use and always want to be stoned, never want to study. Its pretty much up to the person.

I decided to try smoking some marijuana first and since I have there has been no need for the pills. I was once extremely anti-weed, but when I decided to take the time to educate myself properly on the subject, not at all like you have done here, I changed my mind completely. I am proud to say I am a pothead. Now I can smoke and relax instead of having to take nerve pills and worry about becoming addicted to them. All natural cures all the way!!!

In a society where alcohol is

In a society where alcohol is legall, and can destroy families, lead to addictions and is terribly bad for you body... but is okay?
Weed calms people down, is alot better for you than comsuming alcohol , but yet is illegal. I bet that everyone who smokes weed is far more happier than anyone who goes to drink. People who choose to drink, is becuase they feel the erge to do so, weed isnt addictive, it makes everything around more fun and motivates people to do great things. The consumtion of alcohol does not, it doesnt anable you to do anything really.
Weed should be legal, done.

You're all selfish

I for one am disappointed at the message that the majority of the people are sending. Yes, I agree that marijuana is not as severe as heroin, alcohol or meth. I also agree that some of you are enhanced creatively and academically. However, what about the kid who skipped school today to get high? Or the kid who's behavior has changed from a good student/son to a an F student and a backtalker? You're all so selfish and only thinking about yourself. What if your younger brother or sister was getting high all of the time and not doing anything else but? Would you tell him/her that it's okay, keep smoking, you'll get smarter eventually?Or that marijuana is good for you? It is sad to see that many of you depend on marijuana for your good grades or your creativity. So you are telling me that without it you are stupid and dull? And if marijuana is not addicting then stop right now and don't ever smoke it again for the rest of your life. I didn't think so.
Maybe you found a way to incorporate marijuana into your life but don't encourage others to do it as well because you don't know what it can do. I am not worried about the pot smokers who's life is just peachy. I am worried about the teenager who smokes and has no ambition or motivation to do anything in his/her life. Marijuana can kill, not physically perhaps, but psychologically.

Pot

Ok so i think that marijuana can be good but only to a certain extent. Yes, it does make you relaxed and sparks off your imagination and even gives you that sense of euphoria but it can all backfire if your doing too much. From past experience, I found that marijuana makes reality feel so vague and can change the ways you perceive things such as religion and school. You just don't feel the same anymore and you're tired all the time. If you're smoking every once in awhile and you're keeping up with all the priorities in life it may not be so bad but the problem is that very few people can do this and I advise those who can't to quit. You start to blow off school, friends, sports, .. for weed? Now thats bad.

YOU NEED REFER!!

okay i as a student in high school smoke marijuana.
just because i smoke weed dont mean im going to fail in life. i still get good grades and havent done nothing stupid on weed. and for your information it doesnt make you selfish in anyway. i have a wonderful fckin life. and i love encouraging others to try it. it helps out in many ways and relieves the stress. maybe just because yu find your life so "perfect" dont mean you can post some stupid shit like this. you must be the one with out the life or any "motivation" in it. and i smoke weed everyydayy! and im such a great person. nothing is wrong with smoking refer. so without marijuana dont mean we think were stupid or dull its the same shit wheater you do it or not. so why not do it. honestly i think you need some weed in your life. hahaha :)

listen i was one of thos kids you are talking about skiping school to toke up and what not but its funny cause i was right next to kids who also skiped school for no resone at all i was a kid that hated school cause they force things on you i skiped cause i dont like school i got high cause i wanted to just like people drink cause they want to or smoke ciggerets cause they want to and it help with my grades and it helped me cope with life but they have something called pills right that help do the same thing and they have wayy more side effects then pot and there side effects hurt you im not saying i rely on pot to help my grads or copeing with life cause i was a great student i just didnt like teachers or school in genaral people made fun of me all the time and i was depresed all the time so pot you could say was my anti depressent with out killing my liver or body, yes pot help me but no i dont need it i use to smoke it every day all day non stop for about a year i did that befor that i did it every now and then after it i do it every now and then would i go back to smoking every day yes because i like it just like people like to drink and smoke ciggerets and by the way you cant tell me you really like life cause life sucks plane and simpil it dose cause every day we are faced with death killing rapeing and the list goes on for a long time trust me i bet at lest once a day you get mad or sad in some way pot dose not let that happen at all it almost forces you to be happy who dont like to be happy and no stoner is going to stop and just cause we dont, dont make us addicts and if you think it dose then stop driveing now and stop going shoping for nice cloths now and stop drinking your favouret drink now and stop eatting your favoret food now and stop hanging out with your friends now you dont need any of that do you so you should be abel to stop now right? and the teenager who dont have ambition or motivation to do anything in his/her life tey are like that cause of the people around them like friends teachers famaly ect. not cause of pot. pot destroys peoples life because the cops come in to there life take all there money there stuff there home and send them to jail were they spend tones of money each year to keep you alive.( tones of your money(taxes)) (Marijuana can kill, not physically perhaps, but psychologically) this is is a killier to me at least good try but your too stuiped to understand what psychologicall is trust me if makeing you happy and helping you cope with things like death or dieing or pain discomfert things like that is killing you psychologically then you dont deserve to talk about this ive studied this so called "drug" for a long time now a good friend of mine hates other "drugs" and will only stick with pot and it helps him with adhd alot he use to take riddlin "aka poor mans crack" but found that poor mans crack made him really sick and angry so he stoped and started on something helpfull "pot" and he almost seems like he dont have adhd now hes very matuer now and hes only 14 he acts like a 19 year old
you can think what you want but by the time my kids are my age and im 19 it will be legal because the gov. is starting to relize we are not just a bunch of lazy dumb stoners we are every day probly smarter people then they thought so ha

Fascism in America

That teenager who has "no ambition or motivation" isn't like that BECAUSE of marijuana. That teenager most likely would've ended up like that anyway. Just like drinking doesn't make me an alcoholic. I have a few beers here and there, and I hang out, and then I won't drink for weeks. Some people are genetically predisposed to be an alcoholic, some aren't.
Would you rather he had chosen alcohol instead of marijuana? Or perhaps some other hard drug like methamphetamine or heroin? Marijuana IS a safer alternative, and that's a fact.
To say that users, like myself, who know how to apply marijuana consumption to everyday life with moderation and responsibility CAN'T consume marijuana because some kid doesn't know how to deal with it's effects, is ridiculous. THAT is selfish and disingenuous, my friend.
If my little brother was just getting high all the time and not doing his school work or helping out around the house, we would have a problem, and we would fix that problem by removing whatever was making him irresponsible, if it was the marijuana, we'd remove it. But if he was getting high all the time, but also being responsible about his school work, family life, etc. then no, we wouldn't have a problem. His lack of responsibility would be the problem, not his marijuana consumption. And the fact is, marijuana doesn't make you irresponsible. Irresponsible people are going to be irresponsible. To point the finger at some happy little herb and say "it made me do it!" is, you guessed it, IRRESPONSIBLE.
The irony of lecturing about being 'irresponsible' and then blaming some harmless little flower for some kid's irresponsibility is hilarious. Why don't you TEACH that kid to TAKE responsibility for his/her own actions and stop propagating misinformation about this plant and blaming the irresponsibility on it. THAT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE.

In the end, we come to the conclusion that no human being on this planet has the right to tell another human being that there is a certain state of mind that he/she is not allowed to experience. (because remember, marijuana, along with most other drugs, have effects on the mind)
You see, I believe in REAL freedom. I believe in personal and individual freedom and liberty. I know that's an uncomfortable area for you right-wingers out there, but hear me out when I say that there is absolutely NOTHING free about incarcerating people who wish to experience a temporarily different state of mind, not to mention using completely NATURAL herbs and flowers that can be grown in our backyards.
That's called fascism, not freedom, and it's quite prominent in today's America, unfortunately.

There's a great quote from a great hero of mine. It goes:

"What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see, who I fuck, or what I take into my body as long as I do not harm another human being on this planet? And for those of you out there who're having a little moral dilemma in your head about how to answer that question, I'll answer it for you - none of your fucking business. Take that to the bank, cash it, and go fucking on a vacation out of my life."
-Bill Hicks

You nailed it on the head

"That teenager who has "no ambition or motivation" isn't like that BECAUSE of marijuana. That teenager most likely would've ended up like that anyway."

That is absolutely right. I haven't done my school work since the 6th grade. I was basically a straight D/F student. I started smoking the herb in the 9th grade and since then i have actually experienced a general increase in my grades. I'm actually going to graduate high school on time, imagine that. Before I wasn't going to graduate until I was 19/20 or so. Hows that for all you fucking nay-sayers out there. I have better grades because of my good friend Mary Jane. I also have quite a few less anger problems which included chucking a metal chair across a room once before i started smoking. Now I'm happily in a relationship which i never thought would happen. EVER. And last but not least i have less depression problems and I'm generally just a fairly chilled out dude.

P.S. Find something wrong with my grammar that I didn't do on purpose all you haters.... Yea? I didn't think so.

P.P.S. Everyone who says NO. You all remind me of my father, because you won't listen to anyone else. You believe that only you can be right and that is the end of the story. You're all douche bags.

Pot

i have been smoking pot for 2 years now. I haven't seen a single bad side effect since i started. My grades have stayed the same, memory the same, my personalality has not changed, absolutly nothing. I constantly look on the web looking for statistics on pot, and i never find them. ill see "in theory" or "we believe" these things about pot. In no way am I, or any of my stoner friends addicted to pot. Just like everyone we are casual stoners. a few times a week. And none of my friends or i have moved up to worse drugs. When i am at school and see clean people talking about pot, its all bad comments, im sure its the same with these people making these pages, pot is completly overrated. You cant make this BS statistics without trying out the drug it self. and in no way anyone is addicted to pot. The only time i start to use a little more then usual is during a bad time of stress. And people say its bad to turn to drugs under stress, but everyone one turns to something during stress, wheather its food, video games, tv, art, snowboarding. anything. it doesnt mean im addicted or have physological problems to cope with my problems. Its like a stress ball. just makes things a little nicer. Last i dont understand why pot is illegal, no side effects, you dont loss control, you dont act like fucking idiot. The government is just stupid not to leagalize pot, it would massively profit the gov'n a little more. Driving high can be a different story, all my friends drive stoned, and i have no problem with it, but i dont think everyone may feel safe with stoners on the road. With the new technology that the gov'n just came out with(you hack a spit into a container and it says any drugs in your system in the past 24 hours) its doesnt make any sence that the gov doesnt legalize now. It doesnt make sence to me that in the United states they crack down so hard on stoners, like its an actual problem? In canada we have it close it being legalized (not really) but police and teachers, schools and anyone. knowbody cares about pot. why not just legalize it...?

People reading my comment or parents interested in this. Pot is overrated, and just chill out about the problem with pot.

im writing a junior research paperon legalization as well. ive been smoking weed for a good 3 years im a junior in high school. i was in a state of depression to a point where i never wanted to get out of bed yet alone deal with people. weed HELPED me deal with all the small problems i deal with and kept me from doing something stupid like hurting myself. everyone is entitled to there own opinion.

One of the few it does affect badly

Everyone does experience weed a different way. It seems like it doesnt hurt most, but some are at risk & for a new user, would you want to take that risk? I for example had a negative experince. Like the essay said it can affect your heart and thats exactly what it did to me. When i tried it, my heart rate increased and felt like it was pumping out of my chest, short breaths, and nausea. Probably because high blood pressure runs in my family. It was a scary experince and one I rather stay away from, I'm lucky that nothing worse happened, but you never know with someone else. Few just have to be careful like me.

In-accurate essay

The paper is well writen and that's about it. Marijuana, like many drugs, can have many different affects on it's users. THEY WILL NEVER HAVE THE SAME EFFECT ON EVERYONE BECAUSE EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT.

In your 5th paragraph you mention how a high dose is considered 15mg of THC. Do you know how concentrated 15mg of pure THC is? That is very potent. You'd have to smoke an 8th of Granddaddy Purp (high quality, high strain marijuana) by yourself to feel the way she did. But let me tell you this much an 8th of GDP is ALOT. Deffinately ALOT that you don't want to smoke alone, cause you want to enjoy it with your friends. Not everyone has the cash to go around buying GDP left and right it's pricey. Typically the weed bought by average people is low strain and poor quality,no one near containg 15mg of THC...they wont get that high.

That irked me about this paper. You can't PINPOINT marijuana, because it is natural. It is a plant. People cross breed marijuana plants all the time to see the hybrid they will result with. Becasue of this, marijuana is like medicine in the sense that it is ever changing, it is always evolving.

Now i'm a college student but i've been smoking weed (high quality) since i was 15. I've always had a job so i've always had money, so I, at a young age, was willing to spend money for good weed. I can only credit everything i have in my life to show for (i'm 19) to mariuana. I am and always was a good student, i now attend a The University of Texas PA 2 hr's from my home. I am doing things in my life that most people don't even think of doing. At my young age i have bought my own vehicle through HARD WORK, and smoking weed. I say smoking weed because weed motivates me to not be a stereotypical lazy pothead, although i am a pothead. SIDENOTE: Marjuana has no longterm, sluggish effects on people. A person who smokes weed and deemed "lazy";is lazy by nature, bot because he smokes weed. He/she is a lazy person who happens to smoke.

I still enjoy marijuana recreaionally before a party, club, school, interview, whenever But i mainly use it to do my homework and study. Marijuana is my aderall. Would you like to compare which is more harmful on the body out of Marijuana and Aderall? Thought so. Marijuana helps ME focus, maybe not everyone but me. It helps me do my homework when writing english paper, because that thikning outside the box teachers always talk about is where i get my ideas from. I break away from the typical mentatlity and in turn produce grade A papers. I may not have even gone to colelge if it weren't for marijuana that got me trhough high school.

Everything written against marijuana, whether it be on the body, in socity, on the brain anything. Those people are malinformed on what they think they know about this plant called a drug by the government.

Marijuana is given to cancer patients to help them cope with dying and come to turns with death. Let me know of one thing man has ever made and created that can make a person in todays age cope with dying? Let me know of anything that can do that. I would deffinately rather hurt my SHORT-term memoery than not be alive.

Inta Marie Cook Mitterbach's picture

Marijuana, drugs, and reporting yourself for doing drugs.

I smoked pot a few times. I never liked it, but it was around and I didn't pass it up on some of the occasions that I encountered. I was working for the Department of Defense and smoked pot again. There was no drug testing, so I was not overly concerned. But, I had lied on my clearance papers and said that I had never done illegal drugs. Marijuana is illegal in the United States, and I knew that, and I lied. I had also tried a few other illegal drugs a few times. It always bothered me that I had lied about doing drugs, and at a critical point in my life, I confessed to a security officer that I had smoked pot and I never went back to that company to work again. My supervisor said that pot was okay. I said that it wasn't okay. That was 14 years ago. I have been raped, assaulted, robbed, and drugged ever since I reported myself. Sometimes it is so bad that I think that I need to go to drugs because I can't stand the pain that I have been put through since I reported myself. I remember how I despised drugs when I was a kid. I try to hold on to what I know is good about me and I believe that I am a good person. I think when you get involved in drugs, you involve yourself with a lot of people and activity that will hurt you. My aunt and my uncle both died in the midst of drugs. They were from Latvia, immigrants to this country, beautiful people, and the were both killed. My aunt was an artist living in the Mojave desert, she made stained glass windows. She was brutally stabbed to death in her home in 2004. I do not know if she was doing drugs, she had in the past, but I would guess that she made poor choices when she chose her friends. When you do drugs, you open up the wrong doors. One of my problems was that the drugs kept following me everywhere I went and I was afraid of the drugs and the people. I ran away and the bad guys won. They are everywhere. I have found the doctors that do drugs, I have found the dentists that do drugs, I have found many professionals that do drugs, and I have been drowning in drug activity for 14 years. It got so bad that the doctors put me on social security. So, now I live in poverty regretting that I had ever had anything to do with drugs. When I was a kid, drugs were everywhere. I left it behind, but it followed me everywhere I went. They followed me from Ohio to Alabama, and back to Ohio. I did not get any sympathy or help from my family. They added to the punishment and basically think that I deserve what I get. I was a beautiful young woman with everything in the world going for me, but society has shown me what they do with someone that made the mistakes that I have made. Even the dentist that I went to fixed my beautiful smile so that my front tooth looks rotten and deformed. Society will teach you what they accept and do not accept. I was not arrested, instead they dragged me out of my house over and over again and threw me in the psychiatric wards and locked me up against my will. I spent 12 years getting locked up in psych wards since I reported myself. Good luck with you life. I hope you do not make a mistake that you are not forgiven for by society. The United States hates me.

no man can live in freedom
1. religion very easy propaganda source to herd the sheep.
2. media scare the herd to a point which they follow it.
3. false information on marijuana or any political controversy.
4. Cooperation elites bribing gov. to force citizens to buy/pay tax for what they don't need. Cigarette companies/ alcohol.
5. Terrorist:- BEST trick in book, convert a revolutionary image to terrorist and use all force on them.
6. Philosophies are not taught in schools that much, generations are feed-ed with bullshit that just stops intellectual growth we need to reach.
7. Parents brainwash children.
8. Gov. system tells us to work all our life, do that, do this in order to be a good citizen, what do we get, we still get pain, agony, betrayal from it. Human race will forever be stuck in this stupid loop of birthing - dying and not achieving something meaningful.
9. They say we are modern, we have technology, does that really reduce violence,poverty,etc... WE are Still savages at psychological level.
10. All science should be spent on brain and life itself.
11. we still haven't figured out questions such as our beginning, end, cause and meaning.

Ok, so what is all this about. I want to say that weed is what we use when we neet to, some people use it just for the hell of it, well other people use it to help thim with things, like cancer, and pack pain. I how aver use pot to help with my back pain when my back starts to hurt. I had surgy on my back 4 months ago, and I do not like to take pills because of the sideafacks that some of the pills can have on me, I think it is safer to smoke pot then to take pills, so what the hell with other people think I say it is batter to smoke then to have a pill that will eat your LIVER. Yes for those that do not know some pills can and will eat your liver after a few months, like that I want to have my liver I want to live.
Hope that we can put this drug to use for the good and not for the bad, I hope that all of the U.S can come to this make it LEAGLE, for all to use pot at all times that we need to how about that. Pot can help with all things, what about people with eating disorder, it can make thin gain weight for one. And for others can can well you know it can make haveing sex better to,and it can make you last longer to how about that one.

No matter what all you stoners think, Pot can mess up your head and lead to all kinds of bad life experiences. You can get busted and have to deal with that. Pot can affect your judgement and contribute to you breaking the law in ways that will affect you for the rest of your life....think FELONY. I suppose there are lots of people out there that think pot is harmless and good for you - well, all I have to say is I expect your judgement is clouded due to excessive pot use. Anything in taken in excess -- pot, booze other shit -- it's all bad. Don't kid yourselves - pot is not the answer to your mental health issues. In some unfortunate individuals it can actually cause serious side effects. And in case you think this is coming from someone that has never used the stuff, think again.

It sickens me to see such oblivious ignorance.
Apparently you missed some valuable information. If your sources are as credible as you think, why are there so many objections in regards to your post?

forgetting about females.....

If you do research on a female mind vs. a male mind...

It is basic knowledge that females, typically, look at the big picture before narrowing down on the little things.
For Ex.
A woman walks in the room, takes it in as a whole, and finds her spot to sit.
A male walks into the room, finds a good spot to sit, then looks around the room.

And both student examples are of girls... im not saying anything sexist but famales memories are typically really short... have you not noticed this? if not watch your friends and everyone around you.

Absurdity

If the writer used proper English and actually had a point in these writings, I would at least have a small amount of respect for them. Unfortunately, it was biased and completely based upon theoretical knowledge and practices. I enjoy cannabis on a regular basis, yet it doesn't impede my objective opinion whatsoever. Science is science, math is math, but the individual human experience should also qualify as something meaningful, if not more valuable. This just seems like a rant fueled by ignorance and required for a school paper. I give it an F-
