HOW DOES MARIJUANA AFFECT THE BRAIN?

AKUDO EJELONU

Pot, weed, grass, ganja and skunk, are some of the common words used to describe the dried leaves drug known as marijuana. Marijuana is a cannabis plant that is "usually smoked or eaten to entice euphoria." (1). Throughout the years, there has been research on the negative and positive effects of marijuana on the human body and the brain. Marijuana is frequently beneficial to the treatment of AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, and chronic pain. However, researchers such as Jacques-Joseph Moreau have been working to explain how marijuana has harmful affects on the functions of central nervous system and hinders the memory and movement of the user's brain. The focus of my web paper is how the chemicals in marijuana, specifically cannabinoids and THC have an effect on the memory and emotions of a person's central nervous system.

Marijuana impinges on the central nervous system by attaching to brain's neurons and interfering with normal communication between the neurons. These nerves respond by altering their initial behavior. For example, if a nerve is suppose to assist one in retrieving short-term memory, cannabinoids receptors make them do the opposite. So if one has to remember what he did five minutes ago, after smoking a high dose of marijuana, he has trouble. Marijuana plant contains 400 chemicals and 60 of them are cannabinoids, which are psychoactive compounds that are produced inside the body after cannabis is metabolized or is extorted from the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids is an active ingredient of marijuana. The most psychoactive cannabinoids chemical in marijuana that has the biggest impact on the brain is tetrahydrocannibol, or THC. THC is the main active ingredient in marijuana because it affects the brain by binding to and activating specific receptors, known as cannabinoid receptors. "These receptors control memory, thought, concentration, time and depth, and coordinated movement. THC also affects the production, release or re-uptake (a regulating mechanism) of various neurotransmitters."(2) Neurotransmitters are chemical messenger molecules that carry signals between neurons. Some of these affects are personality disturbances, depression and chronic anxiety. Psychiatrists who treat schizophrenic patient advice them to not use this drug because marijuana can trigger severe mental disturbances and cause a relapse.

When one's memory is affected by high dose of marijuana, short-term memory is the first to be triggered. Marijuana's damage to short-term memory occurs because THC alters the way in which information is processed by the hippocampus, a brain area responsible for memory formation. "One region of the brain that contains a lot of THC receptors is the hippocampus, which processes memory."(3) Hippocampus is the part of the brain that is important for memory, learning, and the integration of sensory experiences with emotions and motivation. It also converts information into short-term memory. "Because it is a steroid, THC acts on the hippocampus and inhibits memory retrieval."(4) THC also alters the way in which sensory information is interpreted. "When THC attaches to receptors in the hippocampus, it weakness the short-term memory,"(5) and damages the nerve cells by creating structural changes to the hippocampus region of the brain. When a user has a high dose of marijuana, new information does not register into their brain and this may be lost from memory and they are not able to retrieve new information for more than a few minutes. There is also a decrease in the activity of nerve cells.

There are two types of memory behavior that is affected by marijuana, recognition memory and free cells. Recognition memory is the ability to recognize correct words. Users can usually recognize words that they previous saw before smoking but claim to recognize words that they did not previously see before smoking. This mistake is known as memory intrusions. Memory intrusions are also the consequence of THC affecting the free cell of the brain. "Marijuana disrupts the ability to freely recall words from a list that has been presented to an intoxicated subject."(6) For example, if a list of vocabulary words presented to the intoxicated subject and few minutes later, they have to recall the words that were on the list. The only words that they remember are the last group of words and not the words that are in the beginning of the list. This is an initiation that their memory storage has been affected. "The absence of an effect at short term delay times indicates that cannabinodis did not impair the ability to perform the basic task, but instead produce a selective learning and/or memory deficit."(7) I did a study with two college students (Student A and Student B) who both smoke marijuana every other week. This particular study was done an hour before, while and after they were under the influence of the drug. Student A was watching television before she smoked marijuana, was asked which advertisement was splayed before the show started and she got four out of five of her answers correct. After this first section, she smoked a small dose of marijuana twice within an hour. Fifteen minutes after she smoked her last blunt, she continued her regular activity of watching sitcoms. When a commercial would come on, I would ask her simple questions like what happened before the show went to a commercial break. Her responses would be macro-answers about what was going on but when I asked her what the main character was wearing, she did not remember. This was ironic because the protagonist wore a bright yellow suit that my friend commenting on earlier when the show began ten minutes ago. Her short-term memory is weakening because she was only able to remember big picture information and not small picture. Though the results are interesting, I know that I would have had different response on someone else because it depends on how often the user smokes and if they have good memory prior to smoking weed.

Marijuana also impairs emotions. When smoking marijuana, the user may have uncontrollable laughter one minute and paranoia the next. This instant change in emotions has to do with the way that THC affects the brain's limbic system. The limbic system is another region of the brain that governs one's behavior and emotions. It also "coordinates activities between the visceral base-brain and the rest of the nervous system."(8) I am now going to use Students B to describe how emotions are affected by marijuana. Students B is an articulate and well spoken young woman who has a troublesome relationship with her best friends which gets her upset and tense up. But after she smoked one high dose weed, her body was relaxed however, she had trouble formulating her thoughts clearly and would talk in pieces and was jubilant. It has been researched that a person needs to have high dose of marijuana would be in the state of euphoria. High dose of marijuana is measured as "15mg of THC can cause increased heart rate, gross motor disturbances, and can lead to panic attacks."(9) Thankfully, Student A did not experience any of these extreme examples.

College students usually smoke marijuana because they are stressed over schoolwork and feel that marijuana can help them unwind. I have encountered marijuana smokers who are chilled and have no worries in the world but after the effect of the drug wears off, they're sometimes capable to tacking their problem or at the original state that they were in before the drug. The effects of happiness that marijuana usually cause to the user is not a lasting effect because even though a user smokes weed to get away from the troubles of his/her own life, they still have to face these problems after the effects of the drug wears-off. In a survey with college student, an organization called, parents: the Anti-Drug interviewed college students and found that "compared to the light users, heavy marijuana users made more errors and had more difficulty sustaining attention."(10) This was evident through my second experiment with Student B but not everyone who smoke high doses of marijuana experience the same affect.

The chemicals in marijuana bring cognitive impairment and troubles with learning for the user. "Smoking [marijuana] causes some changes in the brain that are like those caused but cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. Some researchers believe that has changes may put a person more at risk of becoming addicted to other drugs such a cocaine and heroin."(11) To prevent such harm, one must be cautious of their actions. Those who do not do drugs do not risk harm. So please the next day you light up, remember you that you central nervous system and brain will be at risk.

I smoked pot straight now since I was 13 years old Im 25 now I smoke it everyday literally through a Bong. I do not smoke well im at work but as soon as im off and for the remainder of the evening till I end up going to bed I do smoke. Now I read your page about the effects pot has on short term memory and brain function, Since I started smoking pot my asthma has vanished my grades went up in school my mind learns at quicker rates and my short term memory is far from gone There isnt much I forget about, unless it is because of my selective memory. Were the people that you tested on already marijuana smokers and also there are diff things to be taken into consideration when testing a substance for example the way it was grown marijuana has to be grown with nutrients and fertalizers to become potent enough to smoke for a high but when people use these fertilizers and such they sometimes do not leech the foods out from the plants which could lead to all kinds of bad side effects Im wondering if this kind of inforamtion is taken into consideration when giving test subjects marijuana to smoke or ingest.

I have no side effects other than a burnt out feeling after smoking all nite, and in teh morning of course but no brain problems like teh ones your website describes ... Chris, 7 July 2006

Yeah...i disagree on a lot of things that you have to say about this. Like for one some of the things you mentioned only happen while you're high, but after the high goes away those things do as well. Marijuana is not addicting like other hard drugs or alcohol. Also marijuana helps people with ADD, makes them focus better, and sometimes learn better. Sometimes when you smoke your nerves are more dull, but sometimes they can be more alive, so to speak. You need to know that everybody reacts to marijuana differently. So these test that your doing don't go for everybody. You need to let people know that or else thats kind of false information. Something that really got to me is when you were talking about how people do it to relax and get their mind of things and once the highs gone all the problems come back. Well once again everybody reacts differently to marijuana. A lot of people when there high talk a lot about there problems and life in general. What I'm getting at here is that while their high they can figure out there problems because being high brings you into a new type of world and you think about everything more carefully. It's like it opens up your brain and lets you think more into your thoughts and about whats going on. A lot of times they can solve their problems like that, especially when there is someone there with them to talk to. Marijuana also brings people together. I know someone who hated a bunch of people, but then one day ended up smoking with them. Next thing she knew, they were all the best of friends. I know a group of people and within that group you've got your "gangster" type, Punk type, goth type, preppy type, hick type, and the list just keeps going. All of them probably wouldn't even talk if it wasn't for marijuana bringing them together. I have a lot more to say but, I'm not going to because I have pretty much proved my point. Also marijuana brings the creativeness out in people. Some of the greatest authors, poets, music artist, painters, and so on, get their great ideas or create there masterpieces by being high.

P.S I would also like to add that I am a chronic user and I could remember your whole entire report on it. I also have excellent grades in school, in fact better than when I didn't smoke. I also would just like to add one more thing: You will not understand or ever be able to know how or what marijuana does to you unless you do it yourself. Trust me I once was all anti-marijuana and always said that it does all these bad things to you and blah blah blah. Well now I actually know how it really does make people feel because I have experienced it and everything there is in that type of world.

P.S.S I do agree with a few things that you had to say ... Jen, 9 November 2006

Hi, I really found this information very useful because it IS a misconvention among most of the college/university goers that marijuana increases concentration and increases the work capacity of an individual. I personally believe that it DOES increase the work capacity of the abuser to some extent, that's when the drug abuser is not in a "stoned" state of mind, but then too, what is at stake is the brain and central nervous system malfunctioning, which degrades the intellectual, job and social skills. So in my opinion, it's not a good deal ... Ankur Gupta, 25 February 2007

allright tell me something if you say a list of say 20-30 vocabulary words and you were asked to read them over, then you were asked say 5 minutes later to remember as many of those words as you can, do you really think you'll be able to do that? no i bet if you asked 100 people to do that that around 90% of them wouldnt be able to do it.

also riddle me this batman, how many people die each year from drunk driving accidents? now dont im pretty sure you've been drunk, and maybe once smoked pot in your life right? well which had a more sever affect the weed or the alcohol? yeah the alcohol!

im a stoner i will proudly say that. but if i have the choice between alcohol and weed i'd take weed anyday. i've driven high that isnt a problem. when im high i drive a little slower then normal and im lookin for the nearest 7-11.

weed isnt a drug it has no addictive characteristics what so ever!!! ciggaretes kill more people then alchol, guns, and pissed off husbands who come home early.

now weed doesnt lead to other drugs what so ever, i've been smokin the stuff everyday for the past 4 years and i have yet to even think about trying other drugs. if mother nature didnt want us to smoke it she wouldnt have put it here!

its as simple as that!! ... Reader on the web, 21 July 2007

Hello, I was told about this site as a friend of mine was completing a research paper. As I looked over it, there seems to be lots of misinformation involved, and my friend has abandoned this site. I wouldn't mind if you read through all of my message carefully. To start off, the following statement is not backed by any scientific evidence what so ever. "Marijuana impinges on the central nervous system by attaching to brain's neurons and interfering with normal communication between the neurons." This has been proven to be false on multiple occasions since the 1970's. Cannabinoids to not not impinge on the nervous system what so ever, this isn't lysergic acid we're dealing with. "Marijuana plant contains 400 chemicals and 60 of them are cannabinoids" This quote right here is misleading. Every plant is comprised of hundreds of chemicals. In fact, they're not even chemicals, they're just substances that comprise the plants' structure. Also, the majority of cannabinoids that are also found in cannabis are produced by the body naturally. Also regarding cannabinoid receptors. "These receptors control memory, thought, concentration, time and depth, and coordinated movement. THC also affects the production, release or re-uptake (a regulating mechanism) of various neurotransmitters." This is simply false, I do not know where this source came from. Your brain does not use cannabinoid receptors for memory, thought, or concentration. Next, saying that "When one's memory is affected by high dose of marijuana, short-term memory is the first to be triggered." is also blatantly false. Marijuana does not directly impact memory, but short term memory only when high off of THC or CBD is affected because the user may be 'distracted' if you will from the plant it self. Also, referring to a 'high dose' of marijuana is ridiculous. There is no such thing as a high dose of Cannabis because there is no possible way to overdose. It is strictly impossible. The most obnoxious quote that i've read from this site is, "Marijuana also impairs emotions. When smoking marijuana, the user may have uncontrollable laughter one minute and paranoia the next." I cannot believe that this would even be published. MARIJUANA DOES NOT CHANGE A USERS STATE OF MIND. PEOPLE CAN MAKE THE SAME RATIONAL DECISIONS AS THEY WOULD WHEN NOT USING THE PLANT. PERIOD. I am actually appalled by what I've read here, and I'm even more appalled by the sources you've used. Unlike true informational sites, you've only used web sources. That is completely absurd. If you look at any reasonable fact site about Cannabis you will see that the sources that are used are mainly from published books and factual citations. Please realize that much of what is on this web page is completely false and misleading. I wouldn't mind hearing a response soon to defend your case ... Spiros Thomas, 7 November 2007

the reason you sometimes

the reason you sometimes suddenly stop and can't remember the conversation is most likely because you STARTED SMOKING WHEN YOU WERE 10!!! You were smoking in the most critical stage of development, adolescence, and substance abuse of any kind during these stages is going to adversely effect you. Lets lose the 'tude dude. The "stoners" are unknowingly working against the legalization by BEING stoners. The only way to legalize is by getting rid of the stoner, which you are right, will probably never happen, but we can hope.

Supporter's picture

"PS: POT WILL NEVER BE

"PS: POT WILL NEVER BE LEGALIZED , to the extent that you'll be able to walk around and smoke it and or grow it."

How could you possibly know that...you dont. Promoters of legalizing marijuana are haveing a petition signed to legalize the distribution, possession and usage of marijuana(up to an ounce). They already have enough signatures (over 600,000)and there will be a ballot on this issue in november of this year you mislead fucking retard.

Weeeeeeed(:

Okay. So we are 13 years old and kinda just started smoking. We think it is greeeeeeaaaaat. Whenever we get high it just feels so amazing. I can control myself when I'm high, kind of. Like, we laugh sooooo much, but I could walk in front of my mom and stuff when I'm high and make it seem like nothing is going on. We don't get high everyday, but we do when we can. I really haven't noticed anything about my grades. The only kinda bad effect of weed on us is that after the highness wears off, we don't remember what kinda shit we did while we were high. But usually it somewhat starts to come back to you. All I know is that I love being high, I'm all for legalizing:D

Anonymous's picture

WEEEEEEEEEEED

Really kid. I mean if your laughing hardcore and your mom hears you she is definatly gonna know you probably should not smoke weed at home other than that i got nothin else to say

why would anyone in the

why would anyone in the entire world wanna smoke weed im doing a project on how kids even adults shouldnt use weed and how it can damage or even kill u i think everyone who does weed should get some help to try and quit

Tell me how marijuana hurts all the people who need it. Tell me how it hurts those who are in so much pain that they would rather kill them self and the only thing that can relive that is a medical drug called medicamal marijuana.

basically "killing

basically "killing people":your tripping because *fact not one person has ever died from weed usage you have a total byest point of view i obviously have been at a point in my life where i didnt smoke that chronic yet i had bad thoughts against it but when i tried it after researching it, it actually was the most exaggerated thing on the face of the smurf.

i love weed and it doesnt do any harm to me

I've been smoking weed since I was 12 years old and I'm almost 17. It does make you forget a little bit, but its not perminate. I do get paranoid when I go into public places.. I am doing well in school and it's not makeing me stupid so fuck all you haters who don't like people who smoke, and its really none of your buisness and weed should be legal. It makes me a happy person, I ignore all the drama and bullshit I really don't want to hear. And people won't be lazy fat asses if they only eat a little bit when they get the munchies. It does make you tired but you can't let weed take advantage of you..haha imma go smoke a bowl right now..late(:

Anonymous's picture

well maybe 12 to 17 does not

well maybe 12 to 17 does not have an affect on you yet but it will once you go pass 30 and is still smoking that's when you would want to stop and have a hard time doing it some people that go trough this cant eat or go to sleep with out it. and it has so much to do with your body getting use to it and not knowing what to do with no weed in you're system.......then you have to smoke a bowl every day to fulfill all the needs of you're needs.........

Anthony Young's picture

Haha how pathetic

You people are talking about marijuana like its meth..... it's fucking pot. Don't do it if you aren't mature enough to have balance in your life. I smoke daily and I am a very successful business man. Marijuana isn't going to make you become a big bad druggy, at the end of the day you ultimately are choosing what you do with your life. Pot doesn't ruin lives, ignorant people that don't seek balance ruin their own lives.

Chronic pain requires assistance in tolerating it;

Chronic pain requires assistance in tolerating it, because nothing eliminates the pain. Chronic pain is much different than acute pain. When young, I smoked pot with friends for the experience, then to be cool and finally to tolerate my pre-adult life. I quit smoking pot for 23 YRS. I have severe fibromyalgia, sleep apnea, interstitial cystitis,& an inner ear disease that throws off my balance so bad I can't walk sometimes for 3 days at a time. The nausea from being dizzy is overwhelming. I am a Christian woman who has an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. I am a conservative middle aged woman. Marijuana is a single item of my health regime. I also use a therapy pool, a cpap and no stimulants, pelvic floor rehab, physical therapy, massage, prescription meds, over the counter meds and accupuncture. I live in a state that legalized marijuana and got my card. My family and close freinds know. Medical marijuana is legal, much less expensive, pure, potent, and beneficial. I take a few hits off the pipe 2 or 3 times a day. It helps with nausea, pain, appetite, sleep, and relaxes me enough to do my other therapies. When the pain level is extremly high I stay home in a heated recliner, drink lots of water and smoke alot more. Those days I do not answer the phone or the door. I take care of me so 'me' can enjoy family and friends. Sometimes smoking is not allowed (like in hotels, on planes etc.) so I can't smoke for a few days. I'm less comfortable but have no cravings or withdrawls. Someone needs to post intelligent, proven facts on the affects of marijuana on the brain of people who suffer from chronic pain.

I Smoked In High School But Not Now

I have read all the posts here and I have seen all the different opinions And my conclusion is... I did pot in High School mostly bong hits. But I believe that if it is legalized there will be nothing left of this world but fat, lazy, angry, horny but unable to get it up, dumb-smart,people and it will be just like the Caveman Days all over again...Abooga! Booga!

You need to control those

You need to control those things, some people will get fat and lazy if they dont learn to control it.
I smoke weed and Im a 17 year old girl and I only 115 pounds and im 5'5, and I do get lazy, only when I sit down, so my Friends and I either take walks or go to work. I smoke a lot of weed and I don't let it take advantage of me. I only loose my memory for a little bit and it's while I'm high, and it's about stupid shit, my friends kaela and artesia and I went and played a game of pool and I hit a solid purple ball in without hitting the white ball, my friend artesia started laughing and told me what I did, and I was saying no I hit the white ball and it hit the purple ball and I thought I had scratched then i saw the white ball sitting in the same place as it was then I remembered I did hit the purple ball in.. And I do well in school, so I'm not a retard..

what i think

I am currently 16 and i have been smoking marijuana for about a year and a half. I was raised around it all my life, and always said that i would never smoke. Well guess what i did and i love it. It's excellent, marijuana makes everything easier i feel like. I Can concentrate more on my school work and I am more focused in my daily life. Marijuana helps me cope with all the crazy insane people that think marijuana is so bad,and they are always stressed out. Not I, pot is my happy medicine i am not addicted to it however. I can quite wenever i feel like i just feel that there is no reason to.
I am a pot head now and i always will be. I am all for legalizing marijuana.

learn the facts

im not even going to waste my time giving you ALL the TRUE facts about marijuana and the brain etc. But i will say this much. the THC in weed has been PROVEN to alleviate pain and withdrawal of TRUE drug users that are detoxing. THC has been proven to stimulate appetite and take pain away from cancer and MS patients alike. THC has been proven to actually have a coating effect when it comes to cancer cells in the lungs. THC has been proven to bond with and protect some cells IN THE BRAIN, shielding them from damage. But yea, we're gonna be worried about some bullshit study this ex-student performed on 2 friends of his while they smoked blunts for a semester at Univ of Underachieving Liars. What a joke. Typical propoganda, fact fabricating, liberal bullshit. Learn the facts before you spread blatant lies and mistruths. Please, I challenge you to cite ONE of your "studies", JUST ONE!

What a jerk!! I cannot believe you can sit back and tell yourself(and other people)that marijuana does nothing to you! THAT'S SUCH A LIE!!!!! You people make me sick!!! People like you who smoke, just don't want to admit that it's bad for you. You just don't want "the man to bring you down." And don't you dare call what Akudo Ejelonu wrote "blatant lies and mistruths." This is the disgusting and repulsive truth: MARIJUANA KILLS YOU!!!!!! Check any other site about the harms of Marijuana, guarantee you 100% that it will say exactly what Ejelonu said. STOP SPREADING LIES, BEACAUSE IT'S JUST SICK!!!!
Find something better to do with your life than just sit around and get high all day. I know I'm going to have a great life and a great family. Not you, your blinded from the truth, and it's actually quite sad. Chew on that JERK!!!!

Then cite it, show me

Then cite it, show me proof.....Please anyone, show me proof that MJ is as bad you would like to make it out to be. The reason why over 50% of people think something negative about MJ, is cause they have been told negative things about MJ all their life, just like Jesus, god, and any other religion. Since you could probably remember you have herd 3 things all your life, the Jesus died for you, that he was the son of god, and that MJ is a drug that is bad for you......GET over it, allow yourself to think for your self and come to your on conclusion, not cause what some one said or what your parents want you to think, act, or believe. This is nothing more than the affect of societal structure, why we made pot illegal....if was so paper manufacturers could get rid of hemp which would be cheaper to make and cheaper to sell. So they lobbied it and got MJ illegal. oh can anyone tell me when Ciggrets were illegal?Fucking idiot.

weed sucks

ayo here in south africa almost all the people i know smoke weed. thats bad because none of them are actually doing any good for the community and in fact weed makes people get lost in their minds and they end up getting trampled on by the sobers because they are in touch with reality. what im saying here is if you wanna live in another plane or world then bloody well build a space ship, but i can assure you, you will lose focus and original thought, im a stoner myself though and i hate myself for getting caught up. i decided to quit for now until i get my university degree. in all honesty weed sucks i mean why not do something with your life instead of smoking it up?

brittanie's picture

Weed does not suck!

I sertainly do not think weed sucks. Do you see it with a mouth suckin, NO, I didn't think so.
You need to keep your negative opinions to yourself, because i find them rude..

sidrarose69's picture

Maybe you should take a puff

Maybe you should take a puff and chill out. I've smoked here & there throughout the years. I get pretty fucked up from it, I'm a 1-3 hit wonder. Some of the stoners I know smoked their brains out. I can tell when most people have smoked by how dumb they act, they can't keep up with the conversation for instance. Can't you stoners just be honest. This site, that I just happened to come across, may not be correct but you can't tell me you believe there is no risk to smoking!! Admit that, then admit the risk doesn't bother you. Then we can move on to more important things, like it should be legal because people should be able to do whatever they want! The goverment has no right to say!

My experience.

Quite honestly, I don't think Marijuana, weed, ganja, pot, whatever you call it is so bad. I smoked for the first time when I was 15. I was scared at first because I thought that it was such a terrible horrible drug and I was going to die from it. There's honestly nothing wrong with it. You can''t overdose unless you smoke your own weight, but unless you're Snoop Dogg, I don't think anyone has the money to waste. I have grown to like this 'drug' and now smoke on a daily basis and as much as I can. My memory was affected, but once my body adjusted, I started remembering more and more. This is my last ydar of High School and I make sure to smoke daily, and my grades are at the highest I've ever had them. :] Smoke weed, kiddies!

WEED IS A NATURAL HERB.

well first off i will say that i am jamaican and a woman and i have been smoking for the past....5 yrs or so. I believe if u let weed become a problem in your life then it will be. Addiction is only in the mind and if u are strong enough for it then smoke it; now if u are weak minded as most in these comments then dont hit the dutch. I do believe in Rastafari so its part of my religion. Herb is natural an if it was bad God wouldnt have grown it out of his Earth for man to seek. if u abuse it then its a different story. not everyone who smokes weed is dumb, a moron, depressed or whatevr you may call it. Stop judging ppl who smoke weed, you dont judge ppl who drink...Herb is the healing of a nation, alcohol is the destruction ... Excuse me while I light my spliff good God I gotta take a lift...-B.Marley

The reason people decide to

The reason people decide to smoke pot is because THEY are 'weak minded' as you say..They can't handle life without the fake, temporary relief they feel after getting baked. To become sober is to become strong minded. To find your way back to the person God created you to be. Oh and by the way, God created many poison plants and rattlesnakes too..does that mean we should eat them and let a rattlesnake bite us?? Oh the logic of a pothead...it's funny but sad.

one sided

every one seems to be so one sided on their opinion of cannabis i think it should just be legalised but only in weak to medium doses like alcohol. But all the people who can't handle it that well caan get help there could be a marijuaholic anonymous. I think if it works for you good for you and if it doesnt too bad

I've been smoking weed off

I've been smoking weed off and on for 30 yrs. I'd say about 70% on. That is..I have smoked alot! When I first started-as a 13 yr old. It was 35 dollars for a big, 'five finger' ounce. Now it's about 10 times as much. I've smoked every kind if bud there is.. gold bud, hash, tai-stick, red-haired stink bud etc... I've smoked out of bongs as tall as me and I've smoked out of tp rolls, apples, papers etc.. I'm giving you this background to lay the ground for what I'm about to say. I've been reading the posts above and I'm very concerned to get the truth out there. I agree that everyone is affected by pot in different ways because we are all so different and unique. But guess what, being high changes who you are. Sometimes in a seemingly positive way but the key word here is SEEMINGLY. Just because you feel better..or more at peace or more creative for a time does not mean in REALITY you are better or more at peace or more creative. The thing that has been scaring me about my use of pot lately is that my desire to be 'high' takes over almost every other desire I have. To 'catch a buzz' before I go to...whatever.. has become the norm..and I don't like that. I like to be in control of My brain! The dangerous thing about marijuana is it's subtlety. It's like a slow ride to nowhere. A slow, SEEMINGLY peaceful ride to becoming someone you were not born to be. Oh and by the way, I am sober now and hope to be the rest of my life. Why? because life is short and I want to be present during it.

Amen brother, I agree with

Amen brother, I agree with you. I have smoked pot for 37 years every day of my life. Now it is time to grow up and I am 13 days clean. Hope to keep this up for the rest of my life. Good luck to you!

A concerned academic

Many successful and intelligent people smoke marijuana regularly for enhancement purposes, but do not "come out" about their marijuana use because they are subsequently labeled or negatively targeted.

When one reaches a dead end with a particular problem, smoking marijuana provides another creative method of analysis.

Smoking everyday? Of course there will be short-term memory effects. But don't try and suggest to me that occasional recreational or directed PURPOSEFUL use is harmful in adults.

Those having trouble coping with life drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes; those who wish to celebrate it or embrace it smoke marijuana.

I am for decriminalization.

I need opinions.

Okay, So my name is Jena and Im 13 years old. I just started smoking and the first time i did, i FREAKED out. i must have been so paranoid and have really bad anxiety or something. but all my friends smoke and i just feel like i should too. but ever since i started smoking i feel ALL the time. its so weird like ill feel fine and then all of a sudden ill feel high. my high lasted for like 5 hours, im serious. i timed it. at one point everything was blurry, plus i was shitfaced i thought i was going to die. but anyways, is it possible i could be permanetly high? or something happened in my brain and now i just randomly get high? PLEASE HELP ME!

Anonymous's picture

Jena

lol you aren't permanently high, you're just a lightweight. Nothing wrong with that, if i take one puff im high as a kite and pass out. And most people their first time are paranoid about what is going to happen or about getting caught, I always feel paranoid no matter how many times i tried to not. Don't feel pressured by your friends to smoke weed, all of mine smoke daily and they always try to get me too as well but i just say no. I still drink and party with them like normal, I'm just not high with them. If you don't feel comfortable being high, don't smoke weed its that simple. By the way I'm 18 now and have been pressured for 4 years now lol

Weed...

I am trying to figure out everything a bout weed, and no i have NEVER smoked anything in my life... all i know is that if you fall into peer pressure at a young age, it gets you absolutely nowhere in life. I'm 14 years old, and i am trying my best to never do any drugs or drink alcohol due to obsession. Just understand that weed is different for many ppl. The things i've heard from my friends is that you get used to it. But my PERSONAL OPINION is that you never get used to it, you just think you do... so than you feel like you have to. and Smoking doesn't mean that your kewl. I mean you can do the same things that they do, only you sound stupid because you don't anything to blame it on. And ppl. also choose to use the reason "i was on drugs" just so that they don't feel guilty and "can't" be blamed for whatever they did...
All i'm saying is smoke if you want, but don't abuse it and know when to stop, and be able to stop if you wanted to. always make sure that you keep a strong will and don't give into something that you're not ready for. and just to let you know, almost all of my friends smoke, have smoked, or are trying it... and i have never done it... and will stay that way, because i feel that you have/ get more respect for being able to say that you weren't like the rest of the ppl. you did smoke (it makes you different) and i am very well respected for have never smoking!!! :) hope that helps

hi i started smoking trees at the age of 11 it did not really do anything to me until i was about ur age.i used to have the same effects as u i would even black out from just smoking a blunt. i would shake and feel so cold to the bone. people used to think i was crazy but weed effects everyone differently. i would be sitting in school and just feel like damn i am high and i would not even smoke i guess thc just stays in ur body and if effect everyone different wen it is coming out of their body .so i did not smoke for like two years and all my frens would be like r u high all the time i had to even have a piss test taken in school because my teachers thought i was high so i freaked out and though i was stuck high forever.so i started smoking again wen i was 15-16 and i would have anxiety but i didnt know wut anxiety was at that age i was obilivouis to everthing so i just kept smoking and finally at the age of 17 i felt great i smoked all day everyday i loved it i thought i would smoke for life then wen i turned 18 i started having servere anxitey attacks i though i was having a heart attack or a stroke now i do not smoke weed but my boyfren smokes all day every day and i can even smell it with out freaking out i loved weed so much i have dreams about smokin it i havent smoked in almost two years now and wish i could everyday if drinking and smoking affects u like that i would not do them together it can accually cause u to overdose on alcohol making u think u r more messed up than what u r. so becarful and dont fret things will fall in to place eventually

I smoke every weekend. High, high, high, is all I wanna be. I don't give a fuck about school, but I never have. I realized after smoking for about a year now, I have been paranoid and my anxiety has been pretty bad. pretty much though. "I dont know how to cope with reality, and therefore, i get high. ohwell, what can you do? I'd rather be happy then depressed. im fourteen. and i was totally against weed, until i tried it. it doesnt lead to other drugs i will NEVER do any other drugs. drinking and smoking is it for me and thats all it will ever be.

GET HIGH <3 ...........( KIRSTEN SFAK )

you are so naive, and young one day the effects of weed will hit you...and maybe not. but for anybody who knows anything about smoking weed............ITS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE!!!!..................the resaerch done on this site is correct after every statement it says some people are effected differently. some people get relly addicted and rui there and give up everything( success, children jobs, relationships, emotional stability....ect.) and others can smoke for a year, stop and never miss it. some people do get "brian damage" ( for lack of better terms) and others dont, and some have brain improvent while high or after. some get hyper while intoxicated and others are just relaxed, paranoid, happy, and some get violent. " IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE PERSON!!!! " this research was done to say this is how it is, it was done let people know some of the risks, what COULD happen to you if you decide to smoke weed ( or eat it, whichever) i have smoked weed. started when i was 13 and stopped when i was 16. i am one those who have smoked to escape the problems in my life. when i first started i was hyper, than as i continued to smoke i soon just became relaxed. it did damage my short and long term memory slightly. i was failing my classes becasue i couldnt concentrate, because all i WANTED to focus on was my high. i also became addicted and hot locked up, i lost a lot of relationships, and became someone very selfish. a lot of my family members are also addicted to weed, pills , it are alcoholics. so to anybody who decides that they want to smoke weed be wise, qiut if it gets out of hand
