Oprah to produce 'Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks' Movie for HBO

tgarber's picture

According to the Huffington Post as of May of this year, Oprah will produce a movie about the 'Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks'. What do you think? How will a movie be different from a book? Should she make the movie? Why or why not? These are some of the questions I have been asking myself. As of now, I have no idea.

Henrietta Lacks

This story needs to recorded not only in literary but in film. It amazes me how many people are unaware of the contributions and sufferings still today that many families just like this suffer. Henrietta Lacks although totally unaware of her contributions to science...Mankind, should regard Mrs. Lacks as a major contributing factor in curing many many people, some whom would not be here today. Her family absolutely should be compensated, not by Oprah Winfrey, I believe that the scientific community as a whole should contribute some set amount, then pour the total into a larger amount and then distribute to her offsprings/grandchildren only. It's a sad very sad story. But oh the joys which were derrived from her suffering and the suffering of her then young family. Those joys I mentioned am referring to Life. Ms. Winfrey I pray that you do this film, as only you can.

I honestly think that the

I honestly think that the book was written in a way that puts the blame on the scientists and expects some kind of compensation for the Lacks Family. I don't think that the movie therefore will be any different than the book. I think that The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is quasi-ethnographic, seeing as how she decided to incorporate family interviews and such, and in being such, it presents itself in a light that has more sympathy for the family while putting some blame and fault on the people and social conditions that allowed for this to happen. Therefore, I ultimately think that the movie will do the same.
