The link below is for an organization that I feel has really contributed a significant understanding of what comprehension really is for me.  Lindamood Bell is a wonderful organization determined and committed to the achievement of all learners to reach their potential.  The people who are associated with the organization demonstrate a professionalism without sacrificing the understanding that they are providing a service for individuals as people, not commodities.  If you have an interest in teaching reading and phonemic awareness in an alternative way, I strongly recommend reading thier two programs "Seeing Stars" (phonemic awareness) and "Visualizing and Verbalizing" (reading comprehension).  They even have a site in Bryn Mawr on Lancaster Pike if you are interested.
