I agree that text messaging has the potential to ruin the little bit of ability some of our students have with respect to writing. There is a viewpoint, tho, that anything that gets them writing is a good thing. While I see the validity of that, I believe that the kids can be taught the difference between formal writing (and when it's appropriate) and informal writing. There is no reason that they can't do their rough or initial versions in any form they like . . . so long as they realize that the final version must be done in proper English.
