Schools are factories?

We watched this video during a small group activity with other teachers and had some discussion on it. I thought it was interesting and wanted to share:

Teaching in the Cyber World

What was my role?

This year was my first year teaching in the virtual setting
as a math specialist. In this role I remediate seventh graders who are not
where they “need” to be mathematically for their grade level. I see each
student twice a week for about 45 minutes.
I have had several barriers throughout the year due to the students’ own
barriers. It definitely has been very different for me working in this world. I
will give you a glimpse of it.

Ashley's Index

I feel a sense of relief after completing my first year of teaching. After surviving the world wind of this life changing experience I can now catch my breath and further reflect on my experiences. I see an immediate need to involve more creativity and inquiry into my lessons...this is why I am here. I am here to learn, question, and gain ideas that I can apply to my classroom. The interesting twist is that I my classroom will be changing for my second year of teaching. I will be entering the cyber community and trying to incorporate creativity and inquiry into this world. I am not sure what to expect...

This Summer as Inquiry

Often times I feel that inquiry based learning is resisted because it requires more work. You can not sit there and “absorb” the knowledge being thrown at you. In essence I believe that traditional lecture styles do not require you to create an understanding of something, it only requires you to learn and accept what another person discovered. On the other hand, inquiry based learning requires that you construct an understanding for yourself. This is why it requires so much more work. This is something that I learn this summer.
