Lesson Critique

The lesson I chose is from The School District of Philadelphia's Curriculum & Instruction's website. http://www.phila.k12.pa.us/offices/curriculum/

Click on science, click grades 7&8, go to the right & click on MSP Companions. You will see a list of 7th &8th grade topics per report card period. I chose 8th grade-2nd report card -Inside the Restless Earth. Click this & look for Learning Resources/ Extension Activities. The activity is called Sequencing Time & the goal of this lesson is for the students to understand the necessity and the processes of placing events in sequence.

Humanities and Science

It was a pleasure to be a student of Anne's once again and listen to the discussions from the humanities department and the science department!

As I stated before I am scheduled to teach RELA next year with the possibility of teaching science. Therefore, I enjoyed today's activities and do plan to use this in my classroom. Today's discussion of having the students drawing first, then writing isn't anything new, BUT..... it was a gentle to remind me to get back in the habit of having the kids utilize their artistic abilities. The students are responsible for 5 writing assignments per report card period, AND writing can be like pulling teeth! (similie) Hopefully, by having them draw, etc will assist them in their writing assignments.

introduction

My name is Diane O'Fee-Powers and I teach in Philadelphia. Last year I taught 7th & 8th RELA. In the past I have taught science at this grade level. Next year I am scheduled to teach RELA until at least October. October is when the classes are leveled. If   more 7th graders are admitted to our school, we will need another teacher. That teacher will teach the 3 RELA classes and I will go back to teaching science & 1 of the RELA classes.

I am interested in inquiry based education  & how to implement it with the core curriculum. Most of us think of   inquiry in science class, but   don’t think of inquiry in the other subjects. I am interested in applying inquiry practices in both the science & the RELA class.

Science and a Sense of Place

My goal is to incorporate the Brain and Behavior Institute and Science and a Sense of Place into one project. The project will be on Bullying and Violence and I want to create it as a Service Learning Project, I guess I better warn my colleagues! I hope to work with the SS, math, computer and health teachers. I want the students to include stories about bullying and I hope thier stories about bullying change after this program.

Meditation for Middle School

These are the sites that I found on meditation, I hope you find them helpful.

Here is a website that I found to teach mediative breathing. I want to teach myself over the summer and then start teaching my students in September. I think the meditation will assist us in our academic and emotional journey. Meditation has been shown to improve concentration to help us academically. It has also been shown to assist in dealing with conflict. Click on to read more.

Storytelling

STORYTELLING

Here are some websites on storytelling. I think these sites will make reading and writing stories a little bit more fun and interesting!!!

Another way I want to teach storytelling is with the use of Ambiguous Figures. I would like to start with the pictures Paul showed us in class.
