Re: Nature through Nature's Eyes

R_Massey's picture

When going out into the beauty of the world that so abundantly surrounds us, we always speak outside of ourselves. When we talk about landscapes, we focus on the trees and flowers. We so often find ourselves as something added onto the backdrop of the environment. In doing this, we subject ourselves to the idea that nature is something outside of ourselves. We get it in our heads that we taint the natural world and, in doing so, ignore our position in the natural world. I assert that the environment is defined by the variation it can exhibit, includes life in a multitude of forms, and is subject to change. Nature is not simply a construct but a vessel by which life can manifest and permeate.

Moving Forward

My project focused on a large corportaion and what they represent with their clothing designs, labor practices, and political supporters. If I wanted to bring this a step further, I could try to organize some awareness group to educate people who may be unaware of Urban's practices, considering a large amount of people shop here regularly. Considering there was a lot of information about the Urban controversies online, I'm wondering if there is more that the company hides.

“The point of intersectional analysis is not to find ‘several identities under one’…This would reinscribe the fragmented, additive model of oppression and essentialize specific social identities. Instead the point is to analyse the differential ways by which social divisions are concretely enmeshed and constructed by each other and how they relate to political and subjective constructions of identities”

10 Week Apple Reflection

Farida and I decided to devote  ten weeks to tracking the process of how MacBooks are made and how they are deposed. Over the years, technology has been groundbreaking and having a laptop is essential for every college student. But, researching on how exactly everything happened was shocking. This project required a lot of research because Apple is such a big business. While dealing with big companies, it makes researching twice as difficult because they aren’t as willing to sharing every secret. The questions that we wanted to ask, weren’t any that they would’ve liked to answer either.

Urban Outfitters

My presentation was about my personal contact zone due to the clothes that I buy. My closet is overwhelmingly Urban Outfitters; So I decided to research the brand and the company. What I discovered was unsettling. I discoverd that a brand that I have supported for many years has been in the midst of numerous controversies revolving around racism, mental illness, inequality, and insensitivity. In addition to their design controversies, they have been discovered by the US Department of Labor to be using sweatshop-like labor in dowton LA. In conclusion, I discovered that we have to be conscientious consumers and research what our favorite brands really stand for, because if we don't stop consuming, they won't stop abusing.
