Interesting article on access and single-sex schooling

Mich's picture

This is an article I came across, (albeit from Buzzfeed, but it's in their news section) recently, discussing a program in Austin, TX that has separated middle school boys and girls into two separate "leadership academies." It's a longform article, and goes in depth to talk to teachers and students at the schools–worth a read, if you're interested!

(Also interesting to note the language of "saving" poor kids)

The Veil

Agency at the time of the Anthropocene

Hgraves's picture

1) We've pushed the Earth to it's breaking point.

2) We once had to worry about the effects we had on the Earth and how to protect it, but now we have to worry about the protection of us.

3) We are close to crossing maximum CO2 level

Question: What exactly will happen when the Earth reaches it's "breaking point"? And I understand that this is something that we don't want, but should we really be that worried as far as the CO2 level if it has already been crossed before, as well as other thresholds, and yet we are still here today?

#1 contribution to the 'zine!

Anne Dalke's picture

Tonight, Kristin, Sara and I discussed your invitation to us to contribute something in the 'zine. Having long ago set the table
for the feast that has been this 360°, we've decided we'd like y'all to dish up the potluck. So we won't be writing anything--
but would be very glad to be featured as a coven presiding over all. Thanks, Rebecca, for taking this lovely photo!

The Veil, Desire, and the Gaze

abby rose's picture

As I read The Veil, Desire, and the Gaze, I realized how little I knew about veiling and veiling fashions. Many of my ideas about veiling were based off of uninformed, inexperienced Western dialogue about what it means to be a woman wearing a veil. After thinking about this more and having a conversation with Nkechi, I am now beginning to think that I have no place making judgements about wearing a veil or not, because I genuinely do not know what it's like and I grew up in a place where I rarely, if ever, encountered women who wore veils. Does it matter how I view these women? In a society that I have absolutely no place or authority in? It feels wrong to theorize and judge something I know so little about, whether positively or negatively.

"The prev- alence of an increasing diversity of styles and colors in veiling fashion in Turkey, she argues, does not mean that they are Islamically acceptable as modest clothing. "

" Yet veiling fashion is far from a perfect concoction of piety and style. Not only do women themselves struggle to reconcile the demands of modesty with the imperatives of fashion, they also find themselves under con- stant public scrutiny from Islamists and secularists alike.  "

Volcano (Agency at the time of Anthropocene

nienna's picture

Main points:

-> People are still in denial because they modified their sense of objectivity. Like Scientific theories that are born from animisms and then are inanimated.

-> The earth is like a inactive Volcano after being bombed. It's now active and ready to blow.

-> Like Avatar, ubuntu, we are all one. We are hosts of Earth instead of living on Earth.

And my question:

How exactly are we supposed to use this information to educate people?

3 main ideas

rokojo's picture

1. It is incorrect to claim that the earth has no agency, it isn't going to take our abuse for much longer

2. As humans, we have already surpassed the earth's limits, in many ways it's already too late

3. anthropomorphizing the natural world isn't just a literary/philosophical device, it is literally the way the world works

question:

How will the agency of the earth effect human life? Is the earth capable of fighting back?

Agency at the Time of the Anthropocene

Leigh Alexander's picture

In Latour's essay, he touched on: (flow chart attempt)

(1)Our connectedness with the our Planet--> (2) The destruction we bring upon our planet--> (3)Our need to realize the truths about nature and humanity

---we have a "common geostory"             --We are releasing dangerous amounts of CO2     --Earth is not nature or a machine

--"We are detroying the earth and making it quake" -- "We ned to free ourselves from the seperate relams of nature and humanity"

--->Humans are inept at articulating and truly addressing the needs of our planet.<---

Agency at the Time of the Anthropocene

smartinez's picture

Main idea:

  • The Earth has begun to change again, but this time the change is one that humans are inducing.
  • Through our actions the Earth has been reshaped and is now an active subject.
  • Like the Achafalaya humans will always want more which deteriorates the mutualistic relationship that once existed.

Question:

  • To what extent are we willing to push the Earth beyond its limits of adaptions?
