Thirteeth June

I took this photo of Boston Harbor the night of my high school graduation. I was with the rest of my class on an overnight cruise, the last time we'd assemble in one place for a long time. I took the photo around 1am, amidst a cloud of celebratory cigar fumes and on the highest level of the ship. I don't spend much time in Boston (I live close to the city, and I feel like I don't take advantage of the fact like I should), but when I do get the chance to visit, I can appreciate the change in setting. I have lived in the suburbs my whole life, but I love the city. I love the urbanity and the cadence of life and the sense of anonymity that comes along with being somewhere as populated as Boston.

I. WELCOME!
  first college class?
"read" the room: make some notes of what you see (hear? touch? smell?): walk around, describe environment:  if short story, what about setting?  what traces of history? architecture?
other details-and-organisms in the room...?  pay attention to what's tactile and emotional, not just visual...

Last year I was on leave during the fall semester.  I'd just moved into the city of Philadelphia, the days were bright and blue, and I was learning to take pictures.  One late afternoon I was wandering with my camera through the narrow streets and alleyways over on the east side of the city.  I was in a little dead-end alley where the sun was coming down in slices, and I liked the way the light looked falling over the cobblestones and cement.  A guy was standing about a block away working his cell phone, but otherwise it was quiet.  Then a tall young man walking his dog crossed at the intersection with a larger street - was it Pine?

I’ve had a Serendip account for eight or nine years. A few years ago, when the “avatar” option emerged on the site, I selected this picture of myself, which suited me quite well for a long while: I liked my smiling, welcoming face, the face that went with my user name (which is my real name). I liked being out, claiming, as myself, what I said on-line.

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had fantastic summers! I am extremely excited for our first session on Thursday Sept. 10 (2nd week of classes). You are going to have a little time in Jody's class to start thinking about that session, so I wanted to provide you with information about the current plan for our literacy group.

Trayvon Martin’s name sounds from the car radio a dozen times each half hour. You pull your love back into the seat because though no one seems to be chasing you, the justice system has other plans.

Yes, and this is how you are a citizen: Come on. Let it go. Move on.
