Since I left my home and met with so many people from so many different places (different domestic states or different provinces of different countries), I am curious about how people make friends with each other.

There are some people who will avoid offending their friends both in behaviors and languages no matter how close they are.

And there are some people don’t think this is a thing because they are really close.

If two people from each group make friends with each other, I want to explore about how the two sides keep the balance of their friendship.

Destructive contact zone

“Slippage in Anne Dalke essay has multiple meanings. When referring to the verbal ‘slippage’, it means the “involuntary” loosing control of words, speaking of something unconsciously.” In my essay named Slippage in contact zone, I revealed the relationship between Slippage and contact zone, which I suggested that slippage engenders the needs of contact zone while also function the contact zone. But In Ravens at Play, authors wrote about their thoughts of play, identity and the whole world as a contact zone. Profound questions are pondered: can people play? What restrained us from playing and what cause the play to be problematic? It casts doubts on my arguments and provides new alternatives.

In this project I will research the topic of Bryn Mawr's history of admitting low income students. Bryn Mawr originally admitted priviledged, wealthy students but now that has obviously changed. I believe that it is important that all students receive an equal oppurtunity to receive an education no matter where they stand financially. Therefore my topic will be about when Bryn Mawr started admitting and blending low income students into its community. This will include when the first student received financial aid to how the amount of aid given to students has increased and whether financial standings still play a role in admissions.

Alternative Economics & Food Justice

After reading "Take Back the Market," I am particularly interested in the alternative business models that incorportate alternative currencies or exchanges such as the time bank or community supported agriculture. In high school I worked with a local farmers' market that incorporated an alternative currency to make their products more accessible and affordable to low-income families. For this project, I would be interested in learning more about these models and how they can promote food justice/security and support local businesses. A couple avenues I could follow to explore this topic include interviewing people who are involved in these systems or thinking about how to create an alternative market system for the Bryn Mawr community.

For the project, I would like to know the history of our school’s mental health care system. According to the school website, “The Counseling Service provides assessment, treatment, education, consultation, and referral services to support the well being and functioning of BMC students. “ But of course there was no such a service when Bryn Mawr first established. How does the school gradually pay more and more attention to students’ mental health? How does the school gradually form a system that consists of advisor center, peer mentor and counseling service in the health center? Maybe I can combine the history of clinical psychology in America and some documents of Bryn Mawr.

I want to use this project as an opportunity to look into the issues surounding Asian-American identity. There is a large difference between growing up in America versus growing up in Asia which also tends to lend the idea that Asian-Americans especially do not belong to one or the other. I would like this project to become an opportunity to branch out specifically to Asian American students who feel as if it is difficult for them to connect to already made clubs that are mainly consisting of Asian students from Asia. I do not intend for this project to divide Asians living in America and Asian-Americans, rather, I hope that this will be an illuminating project for those who feel as if they are stuck in the in-between.

First generation students project

Bdragon's picture

Coming as an first generation study, I want to investigate the contact zone between first generation students and non-first generation. All the Bryn Mawr students live in the same enivornment, but I believe that being a first generation students has its own set of difficulties that other students might not share. I also believe that connecting with other students who are not first generation students is helpful, because both sides can learn a lot from each other. How does being the first person in your family to go to college affect your experience in college, and the other way around. Is it more common in Bryn Mawr to come as not a first generation student?

For my project, I would like to better understand the contact zone between people of different privileges.  Many people have specific privileges, like having a sexual identity, gender identity, race or religion that is welcomed by our current american society. I want to examine the similarities between people who have differing factors for which they are discriminated.  I am taking a health psychology class and we learned that people have different health reactions to stress - studies have even shown that black people are at a higher risk for high blood pressure or heart disease.

Project Idea: Economic contact zones at Bryn Mawr

starfish's picture

For my project I would be interested in looking at Bryn Mawr’s history and current status as an economic contact zone. I could examine current and past financial aid policies as well as data (if available) on the economic makeup of the student body over time. I could also look at student employment policies. I would be interested in knowing what factors were involved in any changes in these policies and could seek out historical information on the school to this end.

For my project I would like to more into Bryn Mawr's history with international students. I hope to discover more about the "type" of international student they would look for.  Were these international students generally wealthy? When and where was the first international student from? Then if I can I would like to find more about their experience here. Possibly speaking with some international students today I can see how they feel about Bryn Mawr today and what they think of Bryn Mawr's history.  How is the Bryn Mawr's contact zone different for various international students who have different cultural backgrounds/experiences?
