what about books other than textbooks?
aybala50 says: "I can see how this can be useful for some professors, but when will it stop? What's the next step? Will the next step be the editing of classics? I can't imagine reading a book like Gone With the Wind as an edited version. I know that this is a very long book, but will a reader get a full understanding of the book if he reads an edited version that fits one persons views. There is always bound to be some bias in the editing, whether intentional or not. Also, did an author who wrote any book intend for it to have edited versions for convenience?"
