an alternative to fight or flight?

Some productive wrestling going on here, whether religious, spiritual, or otherwise, from "Metaphors Matter" on down. Along which lines, see also Sophie F and "illness as metaphor revisited." Yes, pain/discomfort is not simply to be accepted, but maybe we "would do really well to start by first feeling it and then learning from it"?
