Yijing Lu

  While the train was approaching Philadelphia, the old song The Start of Something New was playing in my earphone, and the view of skyscrapers was coming into my eyes. It was my first trip in America for me since I arrived here, which made me extremely excited and curious. And I consider that this trip, as a new beginning, is the key that opens my colorful new life abroad.

  After looking around in a part of the city, I noticed that, unlike my hometown, Philadelphia has its own style which can not be described clearly with single words or phrase. Here comes something new to me I found out when I exploring the city:

The Appearance of the Center City

  In my mind, the center of the city should be a business district, which is full of shopping malls and markets of various sorts and is noisy and crowded. However, in the center of Philadelphia, there are libraries, galleries, museums and the Swann Memorial Fountain donated to honor the society’s founder in 1924, which makes the city seems solemn and peaceful and covered with the atmosphere of history and culture.

In my mind, playing is a very important thing, although most of the Chinese parents usually think that playing wastes times and is never as neccessary as studying hard, because all my family members are so enlightened to consider playing is a good way to make children become more creative and imaginative. Sometimes, I just think about the reason of playing. What are we playing for? Just for fun? Undoubtedly not. As far as I concerned, when we play, we can explore new things or even achieve "windfall". We play, not for reasons or goals, but to enjoy the process of continuously meeting the surprise. Moreover, "playing" should not be defined narrowly. If you like, working can be a kind of playing, because you may get a sense of achievement; studing can be a kind of playing, because you may enrich your knowledge; reading can be a kind of playing, because you may widen your horizon; and, even sleeping can be a kind of playing, because you may have an amzing dream! Therefore, playing is everywhere in our lives, and that is why our lives colorful and cheerful.

Nanjing is a wonderland where my hometown located. I am, actually, extremely proud to introduce this city as my birthplace, because this beautiful city absorbs me deeply due to the fact that Nanjing is not only covered with atmosphere of long history and flourishing culture, but also full of scenic spots and historical sites where I visited for several times with my parents and friends when I was young. To be honest, I am a girl who loves to research Chinese culture and traditions. Thus, in this paper, I am willing to introduce this city from the perspective of history and culture, and, of course, the relationship to me.

Under the Edification of History

Nanjing is a historic city which was chosen as the capital of China in ten more dynasties during the whole Chinese history. (details are showed in the following form)

Due to the fact that Nanjing is carrying massive history, several main streets and roads in Nanjing are named after the Used Name of the City as a kind of commemoration of the long history, such as Jian Ye Road, Jian Kang Road, and so on. Every time when I walk on those roads, I think about the stories and the heroes of those dynasties, and feel that all the sceneries of the roads around me are covered with historical mystery.

I choose this picture because the Winnie in the picture is not only a toy of my favourite cartoon character，but also my birthday gift sent here by my best friend this year.

My birthday is on September 6th, which is alway at the beginning of school semesters. Thus, when I was a child, different with other children who hated the end of holidays, I was always looking foreward to the new semester. 

My birthday this year is the first time for me to celebrate alone without any family members or old friends. However, I never feel upset for the simple reason that I meet so many new friends here. Although I am far away from my hometown, I can still feel warm and happy.

Moreover, I notice that there is a parade night on my birthday on campus, which makes me feel excited, and I hope to make friends with more girls that night!
