Hello! I'm Abby. Sarah is my middle name, and on most social media sites I forgo my last name and keep it to Abby Sarah. It's a left-over relic from junior high school me creating a Facebook account, terrified of putting her last name on the internet. I now know it really won't stop anyone who wants to find my Facebook page from finding it. It just makes them try a little harder. At Bryn Mawr, I am a junior geology major with a minor in English and potentially theater.

I’ve had a Serendip account for about 10 years. A few years ago, when the “avatar” option emerged on the site, I selected this picture of myself, which suited me quite well for a long while: I liked my smiling, welcoming face, the face that went with my user name (which is my real name). I liked being out, claiming, as myself, what I said on-line.

Any display of any object is the result of a vast number of choices made by a wide range of people.  When information about the economics and ethics of the acquisition of those objects is added to this picture, however, these choices take on additional meanings: the money for purchasing some of the objects exhibited here was earned from work done for petroleum companies notorious for decades of exploitative and manipulative labor and environmental policies and practices in Africa.

African-American students preference for graphical or text-based programming languages depended on career goals

Here is a write-up on African-American student preference for types of programming languages.

This suggests that if you have an introductory Physics course serving students who are interested in a career in, say, media design, then they might prefer a "graphical programming language" like Alice. Alice isn't really so much graphical (like Scratch) but more text-block oriented.

The language compared (Jython) is just Python implemented in Java. This may really be a comparison of programming environments.

However, these data covers such a small group of users that I would take it with a grain of salt.
