3 main ideas that I saw were:

1. Humans cannot handle rapid change

2. Humans are reggressive

3. WE must still look to the past to find answers to our current predicament

Why do we deny problems that seem so obvious?

Latour Response

I believe Latour's main point in "Agency at the time of Anthropocene," is that we as humans are the most connected to the Earth, but we are also the one that is harming the Earth the most. We need to recgonize that the Earth is in fact very alive and we need to recognize and see that. We cannot ignore and refuse this fact that the Earth is alive just like we are. We need to recognize that we need to act now and we need to put in effort to help the Earth. We are in a stage and a tipping point where the Earth needs us to put in this effort.

My question is that, what can we do effectively to move forward and improve?

Understanding the Agency

Professor Anne, was correct in saying that this reading was quite complex. The three points that I gathered from this text was that the earth is alive and feels all the Damage that is inflicted upon it. Another point I gathered is that there are people who chose to live in denial and lastly the concept of a world without humans is becoming a natural thought. The question that I have is about the concept of a first new earth, the second new earth and so forth. What does this mean?

Bruno Labour's Agency in the Time of the Anthropocene

Here are three main points I have discerned from Bruno Latour's Agency in the Time of the Anthropocene:

"Even though we have to continue fighting those who are in denial, I propose that we let them alone for a moment and sieze this opportunity to advance our common cosmopolitics" (4).

Objective accounts and conventional scientific writing/language are outdated. Anthropomorphism or animation, which were previously frowned upon, are not necessarly negative. It is actually how we give agency to things that we previously thought "should have none "(12).

These points struck me while reading his essay.

- "...in modernism, people are not equipped with the mental and emotional repertoire to deal with such a vast scale of events; that have difficulty submitting to such a rapid acceleration for which, in addition, they are supposed to feel responsible while, in the meantime, this call for action has none of the traits of their older revolutionary dreams" (1).

- "Even though we have to continue fighting those who are in denial, I propose that we let them alone for a moment and seize this opportunity to advance our common cosmopolitics" (4).

Munchkins

As we were discussing famous movies that involve or depict disabled characters in class yesterday it dawned on me that the movie "The Wizard of Oz" has numerous people with dwarfism that play the Munchkin characters. Just wanted to share that as it is yet another example of handicapped people being shown in a not-so-favorable light.

Question to Latour

  • "Even though we have to continue fighting those who are in denial, I propose that we let them alone for a moment and seize this opportunity to advance our common cosmopolitics." (4) This says that instead of wasting our time trying to persuade people to fight for a cause, we need to focus on building strategies to move forward since that's not working?
  • "The concatenation of causes and consequences—and that’s what the real material world is made up of—does not trigger any dramatic effect, because, precisely—and that’s the beauty of it—the consequences are already there in the cause: no suspense to expect, no sudden transformation, no metamorphosis, no ambiguity."(10)
  • "The first reason is that it will allow us to put aside the strange idea that those who speak of Eart

Latour Reading

Main Points:

1. Humans share a bond with the Earth that is so strong. One of the most striking examples of this was when he pointed out that Newton's law of gravitation could illustrate the bond we have in the best way. Serres described this very well: "... the Earth comprehends, in a way, the point of view of the other bodies since it must reverberate with the events of teh whole system." (pg. 6) This took me back to the Le Guin reading that we did for last time, and how the planet the crew was on reflected the emotions they were feeling back at them. In the same way, the Earth takes our actions and emotions and reflects them back onto us. There is no way we can escape this bond.
