Phoenix, who brought a knife to school, who wanted to run away from his home, decided to stay with his mother at the end of the book All Over Creation. Being the oldest son of the heroine, Phoenix had a very rebellious character and showed great disrespect to his mother Yumi. The focus of this essay is to examine the impact of social environment on Phoenix’s rebellious character and   the cause of his decisions listed at the beginning.

What I felt in the Norris Square Gardens was a sense of confident. Both the people who built the gardens and the tour guides felt confidence and proud of their culture. They loved the gardens with their hearts. Out of cultural proud the founders built the garden, and her descendents gain proud from these gardens. 

The Twisted Relationship

In Suzan-Lori Parks’ debut novel Getting Mother’s Body, an unusual mother-daughter relationship was portrayed: a mother who did not want to be called  “mother”, and a daughter who stated “I was glad to see her go” (Parks, 9) upon her mother’s death. After several pages into the book, Parks had already laid out this abnormal tension between the mother and the daughter. The cause of this abnormal mother-daughter relationship, however, was never clearly stated in the book. This essay will be examining this twisted mother-daughter relationship between Willa-Mae and Billy, and the cause of it.

Communication, Slippage and Contact Zone

Slippage has happened to you. Slippage has happened to me. In fact, slippage has happened to every single individual in some point of its life. Slippage may be a word, an action, or a single subconscious thought. It may be so trivial a slippage that the person who slips does not even realize it. Whether intended or not, slippage always creates gaps.

            Humor can be used in writing to teach about a certain topic, make fun of a theory, and most importantly, engage the reader to create a more interesting story.  While humor can be a very useful tool in many different ways, it may not always express the ideas in the most effective way.  As The World Burns by Jensen and McMillan is a graphic novel that uses a lot of humor to show the awful effects that we humans are having on the environment.  On the other side of the spectrum, The Collapse of Western Civilization by Oreskes and Conway has absolutely no humor in it, in an effort to describe the severity of the problems that will happen in the environment in the near future.  These two books express an extreme lack of humor and an excessive amount of humor, but both bring the re

 I am afraid of nature. I am afraid of the unpredictability of the woods and forest.  Yes sure, I help plant in a community garden once in awhile and learned about how plants produce oxygen which helps us live.  So why would I be scared of something which I spend time with for recreation and most importantly I (and everyone on Earth) rely on for our being.  Yet I am not alone. In Ursula K. LeGuin’s “Vaster Than Empires and More Slow” the scientist “ I felt the fear. It kept growing. As if they’d finally known I was there, lying on them there, under them, among them, the thing they feared, and yet part of their fear itself,” (LeGuin 120). By using “Porous Bodies and Trans- Corporeality” by Stacy Alaimo and “Human Cells Make Up Only Half Our Bodies.

The novels As the World Burns, ATWB and The Collapse of Western Civilization, CWC, have opposing views when it comes to solving the climate change problem. They both agree that nothing can be accomplished on an individual level but instead by governments. However, ATWB shows that the government must be disconnected from businesses and CWC says that the government must takeover completely and regulate businesses and the people to fight global warming.

Both As the World Burns, a graphic novel by Derrick Jensen and Stephanie McMillan, and The Collapse of Western Civilization by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M Conway focus on the state of the environment and how global warming and climate change have affected the world. Both books also have some fantastical elements, the graphic novel has humans speaking with animals and stars a bunny as a rebellious activist, while The Collapse of Western Civilization is set in the future in the year 2300. Both these book have some extreme situations or ideas that while initially may make them hard to believe, the far-fetched ideas also emphasize the gravity of the situation. The portrayal of the U.S.
