No Animals Allowed

I suppose I can’t help but keep The Lives of Animals in mind as I write this post…

Honestly, my trip to the rugby pitch this week was the first time I actually acknowledged that there is a NO ANIMALS ALLOWED sign. When I saw it, I immediately thought that it must be new, but really I couldn’t be sure. I then thought back to all the times I could recall when there definitely were animals, dogs to be specific, on the pitch. It isn’t unheard of for spectators to take their domesticated dogs on leashes to rugby or football games.

As I walked onto the pitch, I came across animal paw prints in the snow. Immediately, I thought they were made by dogs, but also, I thought about how it doesn’t really matter what kind of creature took a stroll across this field that no human is actually utilizing during the winter season. It’s evident that the sign is meant to remind people not to take their pets onto the field; but even still, why do we have the authority to say that an animal can’t be in an outdoors place that isn’t even occupied by humans?
