Hi carrieocean06!

I loved reading your Coffee and Books- A short tale of two college girls talking about their lives. I think it is a really creative project.

I think that naming the characters by their most distinguishable characteristic was really interesting and calls attention to how society judges people based on their appearance. As I read “Girl with Red Hair,” “Girl in Wheelchair,” and “Lady with Piercing Blue Eyes,” I felt like I was an outsider looking in on the scenes. We often make these comments pretty instinctively to refer to people we do not know in public, but reading the script really highlighted how we simplify people and either experiences down to one easily identifiable feature.

I also liked how you incorporated different aspects of what we talked about in class including accessibility of college campuses. Girl with Red Hair seemed surprised by the struggles of Girl in Wheelchair at college, illustrating how non-disabled individuals may not realize how exclusive physical spaces can be, despite an institution (such as Haverford or Bryn Mawr) claiming to be an inclusive place.

You also included a discussion of the lack of disability representation in literature, which we recently talked about in class. The script you wrote adds to the collection of disability representation. At the end of your script when the two friends were seeing how many books they could find that included disability representation reminded me of the list we created in class of all the books, poems, and movies we have read/watched. This exercise highlighted how disability is woven into some stories that I didn't realize had disability representation. It also illustrated that if a character has a disability, it is often the main focus of the plot.

Thanks for sharing your midterm work! When is the play being preformed?

Hi! I really liked your short take Coffee and Books! The intro where you explained the labeling of the charcaters was really imptactful to read. The choice to label them each by phsycial charcacteristics has a big impact as you do it with intentioal meaning and it triggered me to think about how i innitially percieve the people around me. I loved the mix of diaglouge, voiceover, and daydreaming- it felt very engaging and kept me wanting to see more of the girls's interactions.

I liked how you weved in factual and informational aspects in describing the way ADA works on college campuses and offered the perspective of how even someone ablebodied with a close friend in a wheelchair had not considered certain acessibillity aspects because she has not faced the challenges.
