Are we all that different?

- Rank the five locations in order of where you felt happiest.

1. Morris Woods

2. A laboratory in Park

3. Glass staircase in Dalton

4. English House

5. Campus center parking lot

- What influenced your comfort level? Why did you rank the locations the way you did?

It seems that other than Morris woods, all the spaces that made me happiest were the most familiar to me because I visit them most often.

- What influences the comfort level of plants? Why did you rank the locations the way you did?

I feel that plants need to be as close to other plants and to fresh air and water as possible. I probably ranked them based on how “natural” each space felt to me which is why an older, stone building such as English house ranked higher than an open space like the campus center parking lot.

- What similarities are there between what plants and humans find most comfortable?

It’s hard to generalize about all humans, since some are more comfortable sheltered indoors and some (like me) would rather be outside where things are more natural. In general though, my choices show that both plants and myself love purely natural areas the most as well as areas that are most familiar to them. After that, it seems that I ranked indoor spaces a bit higher and plants would probably pick more outdoor spaces seeing as this is where we would be spending the most time.

- What differences are there between what plants and humans find most comfortable?

Plants definitely find outdoors more comfortable simply because it’s closest to their natural resources such as sun and water and other plants to partner with. On the opposite end, however, the resources that I need are more often indoors (such as food in my room or water from a fountain or a heated space that will keep me out of the rain.)

Your responses are very different from mine, but I agree that familiarity is very comforting.
