Sartain's Recollections of 1830s Philadelphia

In 1897, the 25th Annual Report of the Fairmount Park Art Association (Philadelphia, 1897), pp. 29-36, published some descriptive recollections of the Philadelphia of the 1830s offered by the artist John Sartain (1808-97).  The actual meeting was held in October 1896; Sartain would pass away a year later.  The text of this report has been posted by the Hathi Trust at http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015074665673;view=1up;seq=14.

This was brought to our attention by our colleague Jim Duffin, from the University of Pennsylvania Archives.  We'll kick this off by posting some excerpts from this and inviting annotation, especially with historical documents, both textual and illustrative.  Let's give it a try:

JC: between sixty and seventy years earlier would be 1826 to 1836. 

JC: The map excerpt below, from 1828, suggests that there was already a good deal of dense development west of 4th St., but Sartain suggests that the nascent central business district was mostly confined to its east.

JC: 4th and Chestnut is a full block to the right of Independence Hall, on a single block in green here; it bisects the 12 against the pink tint at center here.
