Artist profile

Katharine Mangels is a graduate of Temple University and a soon to be MFA student in Graphic and Interactive design at Temple University's Tyler School of Art. In her work with Mughal and Rajput miniature traditions, Katharine has merged an eye for finely crafted compositions, with restorative technological ability. Her work with the Mughal, and Rajput miniature traditions began in Gujarat, the western most province of India, in the summer of 2005 for usage within the ethno-historical documentary film "Singing Stones and Speaking Stones," Katharine was permitted by the Jhala clan of Rajputs, to digitally archive items within the kingdom's collection at Ajit Niwas Palace, Dhrangadhra. Furthermore, elements of other existing items were archived from previously published works, to aid in the accuracy, and detail of the digital prints. Utilizing elements from the traditional paintings and personal photography, the digital illustrations were crafted using Adobe Photoshop. The prints hold testimony to both a fascinating noble history, and artistic tradition. Adjacent to kindled western interest in South Asian religions, music, cuisine, and cinema, exists a vast history of kings, queens, mythical creatures, warriors, and deities. Katharine introduces us to this legacy through her unique images.
