Artist profile

Anabelle Rodríguez was born in Aibonito, Puerto Rico and has been a resident of Philadelphia since 1999. Following an intensive arts education that included dance, music, and studio art, she came to the US to complete undergraduate degrees in the History of Art and Architecture and The Visual Arts at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island (1994). In 1996 she gave birth to a son named Sebastian Michael and returned to Puerto Rico to become the first appointed Director of Education for the Ponce Museum of Art, an institution renowned for its world-class art collection and the largest sample of Pre-Raphaelite paintings outside the UK.

Anabelle came to Philadelphia to run the Lorenzo Homar Gallery and Visual Arts Program for Taller, where she coordinated more than 40 exhibitions of Latin American and Caribbean contemporary art, archaeology, crafts, and ethnographic material. In 2003 she received a Future Faculty Fellowship from Temple University to develop a Ph.D. thesis project in visual anthropology, and she continues to create her arts and crafts out of her home studio in Queen Village while being one of the most interesting independent curators in the city and beyond.
