please cluster in groups of 5, w/ folks you don't know

Turn from the screen, to look now @ what's around us.
Each group has papers and (non!) stickies,
which we're going to use to conduct a "silent discussion":
please write 3 words you would use to describe this room.

Repeat this exercise: this time, write
3 words describing this campus.

Turn to the other members of the group:
tell each other what you wrote/see.

Turn to the larger group:
what came up that you'd like to share?

III. (Sarah--20 minutes: 2:40)
Having described this space--Bryn Mawr College--to one another,
we want to explore a little more the issue of
how each of us feels in different parts of this space.

You'll see around the room names of different places on campus.

Please get up now and go to the space here where you
* feel most productive. (Tell others in your group why you are there.
Can a few of us share w/ the larger group something that arose in the conversation?).

Gather again into (new) groups of 4.

You were invited to a workshop about class @ Bryn Mawr;
you've probably noticed by now that we haven't used that word:
we're been talking about space, as a way of easing us gently into the conversation.
So now I'm actually going to use word "class."

Give an example of a time when you noticed that social class mattered @ Bryn Mawr
(this could be positive or negative).

Sharing w/ the larger group: can we name the issues here?

Can you imagine this event happening differently?
Could you imagine telling the story differently?
What would it take to make that happen?

To conclude: where might we go from here?
What is the one single thing you would recommend
that would make the campus more inclusive?

This is a real question:
we would like to report back to the Diversity Leadership Group;
the president has also asked to hear what we have learned.

Do this again in the form of a silent discussion.
