Secondary Science and Math Education Fellowships

HHMI/Bryn Mawr College Math and Science Teaching Fellowship

Deadline for applications: February 28, 2009

To enable accomplished science and mathematics students to become teachers of the next generation of scientists and scientifically literate citizens, Bryn Mawr College has secured funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) for two Science and Math Teaching Fellowships per year for the next four years. This fellowship program represents Bryn Mawr's and HHMI's recognition of the key role of science educators in society and in the creation of knowledge. The Science and Math Teaching Fellowship Program builds on a program already in place in the Bryn Mawr/Haverford Education Program that allows bi-college graduates to pursue secondary teaching certification as fifth-year students at reduced tuition. Successful candidates are awarded up to $5,000 towards tuition, which ranges in cost from $4,020 to $8,040, depending on the number of education courses a candidate must take.

Seniors majoring in biology, chemistry, math, and physics are eligible to apply. Because of the nature of the funding, Bryn Mawr students will be given preference but Haverford students are also encouraged to apply. Consideration may also be given to bi-co graduates.

Applicants must submit a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, a transcript, and a current resume to Ann Brown, Education Program, Bryn Mawr College, by February 28, 2009.
