What do we mean by Deficit to Desired Based Approaches?

Clarifying the Spectrum from Deficit to Desire Based Approaches:

Deficit-Based Approach: A linear model, application-based, values efficiency, deals with single variables, sets controls for variables. Patches up a problem externally; streamlines and compartmentalizes. Approaches problems from what's lacking rather than what's possible.

Still thinking about or environment and education

rppatel's picture

I saw this article today that showed a "what if" tweet by education secretary Arne Duncan and the first response said what if students spent 90 minutes in the woods instead of 90 minutes reading. It reminded me of our discussion about being immersed in the environment verse being chained off. But our discussion was more about higher education. But being home I noticed the middle schools and elementary schools are just big brick blocks on the road and there is almost no opportunity to be with the environment except for field trips. It'd be interesting to see if there are primary schools in arboretums and what that affect is. The rest of the responses are pretty interesting too and bring up a lot of valued concerns.

A student in my 360° on Identity Matters just shared a video with me, which I think
profoundly extends our 10-week projects on expanding our contact zones; it's by Ananya Roy:
Can We Shop to End Poverty? Mar 11, 2013. Watch it!

If this intrigues, see also Who Profits from Poverty? also by Ananya Roy, May 6, 2013 --
and of course feel warmly welcome to continue posting your thoughts,
or further connections, on this site, which remains always open....
