From Boredom to Wonderland

I returned to my new site today,
but got quickly bored.
The vista that excited me last week
(OUT from under all those branches...)
this week seemed empty.
But being in that space took me back in time...

to May Day, when the Cheshire Cat and Tweedledum were @ my site...

Is Wonderland any use to us here-and-now?

Colors

This week at my site sit I thought about the colors that occur in nature and the colors that are used to mirror nature in advertisements and environmental propaganda. 

I took a picture that I took on the way to my site sit:

 

and uploaded it to Photoshop. 

From there I went to the color picker tool and selected three colors: 

Making Connection: Interdisciplinary Learning, Community, and Identity in 360ºs

I think because we all brought very different things and we were all grappling with the same question – and that can happen in a lot of classes – but the fact that we were approaching it from different angles and spending so much time together, […] I feel like I formed really powerful connections with [my peers] past this 360º.[…] I think it’s a really valuable learning model that I definitely miss,”

Sharing Stories

I really liked the Keenan reading on sharing stories.  I remember sitting in homeroom classrooms as part of my placement, and having the teacher go around and ask students to share something.  This could be from and object from home, or what they did over the weekend, or something that they are excited about in the upcoming day, week, or month.  Regardless of what it was, all the students loved it because not only did it give them a chance to talk about something that they were excited about or interested in, it gave them a chance to listen to their peers and find common intrests and discussion topics.

In my classroom, the environment is very student-driven in that the students usually work on assignments or larger projects on their own or with their friends, while the teacher is maily available for questions and making sure the students are doin what they need to do. While I was sitting with one group of students who had already finished their work on the class assignment (it is believed in this school that all students work at their own pace so students will often be doing different things in class), the topic of race came up.

Unlocking the Generosity, Collaboration, and Curiosity

          I am in a kindergarten classroom. The teacher in my classroom, but also all of the adults I have met, use a harsh tone with their students. This has been the most difficult and problematic part of my praxis. I was not yelled at a lot when I was a child, and when I was, I did something severely wrong first and often my parents had tried many other options before they decided to raise their voice. Unfortunately, the children have become accustomed to this severe mode of giving directions and often will not listen or follow instructions until they are delivered in this manner.

This particular web event would have been tricky to post in serendip's format without a lot of extra time. I have instead opted to post it in two documents attached to this post to preserve a bit of the formatting that makes it easier on the eyes to read.

It may seem backwards, but the first file is the final translations and thoughts on this projects and the second file will be the process I went through to reach those final works.
