Exhibit Access

ekrasnow's picture

As I mentioned in my previous post, physicla accessibility is a huge problem in the KINSC. There is no way to get to Zubrow without taking stairs or an elevator, even though it is theoretically on the ground floor when entering from Sharpless. Due to the rennovation that will be happening in Sharpless, I think it would be best the stear everyone in through the rotunda and avoid using Sharpless all together. From the rotunda entrance we need clear signage for those looking for an elevator as well as those who will take the stairs. Signs directing individuals to the bathrooms, water fountains, exhibit, and quiet space, should be at the elevator exit as well as the top of the stairs.

Exhibition

One idea that I discussed in class had to do with audience participation. I would love to have a lab notebook out on some kind of pedistal with a sign encouraging people to sign, draw, write, and reflect in it. In doing this, they are becoming a part of the project with us. They are beginning the same journey. I think that this would have so much meaning because, in reality, what good is this class if we can't share what we have done? So, we have an exhibition to show people. But, what good is an exhibition if the people are not a part of it? Everyone in class talked about A Fierce Kind of Love and the power that there was in breaking down the third and fourth walls. Allowing us to interact with out audience is important, but what about allowing them to interact with us?

Week Thirteen: Exhibition-Making and Projects

WEEK THIRTEEN: EXHIBITION-MAKING AND PROJECTS

1) Participate in planning and installing the exhibition. I'd like each of you to contribute both to big-picture planning and to concrete tasks related to the exhibition. Courtney shared a sign-up sheet for installation and she will be in touch about creating planning groups. This week, post to Serendip an idea or ideas for building an engaging and accessible exhibition. This can be an idea you already brought up in class, but posting it will give you a chance to think it through more fully and for the rest of us to reflect on it.

Field Work Notes April 14th

Before getting into the exhibition, I would like to reflect on the time spent at CCW this week. We have, over the past months, gotten into a nice rhythm with our participants and teachers at CCW. We know who we sit with, what topics to talk about, what we are working on, and how to (generally) understand each other. In other words, we have worked to find a happy equilibrium where it seems as though everything is comfortable. Looking back, I didn't think I would be able to reach this level of comfort. I remember walking in on the first day in anticipation of some kind of chaos, but was met with mostly happy faces and what seemed to be a well oiled machine. In other words, I have gotten comfortable and come to expect certain things when I go to CCW.

Field Notes - 4/13/2016

Wednesday was a hectic day in the woodshop, as it was our last time visiting the center before our gallery at Haverford. The goal was to finish our boxes, and Carl and I were in pretty good shape compared to the other pairs, so we went ahead and got started by drilling holes into the legs of the box. After that, we had to glue in the pegs that connected the legs to the box, and then had to attach the sides of the box to the bottom by drilling holes and hammering in small wooden dowels. Because there was only one set of tools available for everyone, we had to take turns with the other pairs, and the process was stretched out over the course of the two hours. When Carl got to the room after snacktime, he greeted me loudly and excitedly, and seemed to be in good spirits.

Hi All,

As we mentioned in class yesterday, Sarah and I will be giving a talk about our experience with the BioArt project as part of Disability Awareness Week on Tuesday April 19th (next week) at 4:30 pm.  We would LOVE it if you all could attend- we are hoping to have an informal discussion after we present our own experiences and your reflections and experiences would be greatly appreciated! See the attached flyer for more info.
