Draft Class-Authored Community Guidelines

Strive for conversation, not confrontation

Practice attentive listening

Practice confidentiality -- keep stories and facts from individuals and placements within our group

Regard disagreement as valuable, not personal

Speak from your own experience and validate other experiences -- at the same time, be open to re-seeing experiences from new perspectives and discourses

Don't make assumptions

Don't be afraid to ask questions

Consider your own well-being as part of taking care of our community

Speak with love and respect and assume other people are doing the same; assume good intent and follow up with questions if clarification is needed

Be direct with statements, positive or negative

Challenge ideas instead of people

Always do your best -- be content with what you are able to do, don't push yourself too far

Respect what others say

Consider intent vs. impact in speaking and listening

Address Idea, not Person:  Try to talk it out. Don't disregard people forever. Try to understand where people come from. Be aware of your words- going back to intent vs. impact. Use "I" statements and express how you feel instead of attacking. Express why you disagree or feel uncomfortable. Distance person from idea.

Be concise

Participate if comfortable, and make it easier for people not to make assumptions about your participation by communicating if you are having an off day

Embrace diversity and diverse opinions

Reflect on what you learn

Think before you speak but don't be afraid to share your ideas

Be aware of the space you take up in the classroom

1. Be honest, supportive;

Don't repond to the person --

just to the comment.

2. Listen, but don't judge

Accept others' differences

Think objectively

3. Always do your best

Don't compare yourself at all

Accept yourself now.
