Hello everyone,

My name is Tanya Hamid and I am from Broomall, Pennsylvania, about twenty minutes from Bryn Mawr College. I am an only child. You can all imagine what it was like for my parents to drop me off at my dorm last week.

Like many college brochures Bryn Mawr is said to have much diversity on campus. My initial thoughts about this were indifferent because many colleges promoted the idea of diversity. What made Bryn Mawr stand out? When I arrived to campus for Customs Week my question was answered. As I started meeting people I did not only hear various states' names, but also various countries' names. I was amazed with the number of international students at such a small liberal arts school. Even among non-international students there was so much background to each person. I went to the type of high school that when the German exchange students arrived, everyone wanted to be there friends. Diversity may not seem like a big deal to some people, but going to a predominately white high school, I was very impressed.

A few of my views have been sheltered due to my secondary education and I hope this class will allow me to expand my thoughts and give me a new perspective on my thinking.
